A SPECIAL TWO-WEEK EVENT

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

SUCCESS AT LAST! KET’S FAST FORWARD HELPS WOMAN STUDY AND EARN HER GED® CREDENTIAL

August 2016

W

hen Amanda IsnerCheek was just 14, her life began to change, and not for the better. A native of Knoxville, she moved with her mom to a small Tennessee town where, she says, there wasn’t much to do but cruise around and bemoan the lack of fun. Changing schools didn’t help either, especially since her new school lacked special programs to help her with her ADD and dyslexia. “I just didn’t want to be there, so I just kind of gave up,” she recently recalled from the Lyon County Adult Learning Center, where she studied

trouble, got incarcerated, lost my son, everything just spiraled from there. I didn’t know how to deal with it, so I made some really bad choices,” she added, choked with emotion at the memory. Released from jail but still without custody of her son, Amanda says she got back into bad habits. Fortunately, her sister-in-law stepped in and offered to help. “She came and got me and sobered me up,” she remembered. “I started helping her with her kids and once I was sober I was talking to my son and getting a clear mind, and made me realize that that wasn’t who

“I STUDIED WITH THE FAST FORWARD PROGRAM AT HOME EVERY NIGHT, JUST ABOUT. I DON’T THINK I COULD HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT IT.” for and earned her GED® credential — with the help of KET’s Fast Forward. She passed all four parts of the test on the first try. Back in Tennessee, when graduation time neared, Amanda didn’t have enough credits to graduate. So rather than return for another year, she dropped out and got a factory job. She soon met her future husband, and while she rose through the ranks at work, she decided to quit when her son turned 4 to spend time with him before he started school. It turned out to be a bad decision, she said, coming at a bad time in her life. “My mom passed away, and that was really hard for me, and I didn’t know how to deal with it — she was my best friend. It’s still hard to deal with it now,” Amanda said. “So I turned to drugs and spiraled out of control, got divorced, got in

I was — that that was never who I was. I had turned into that person, but that’s not who I am. “I needed to get back to the person that I was before,” she said. She quickly started seeking work, but with her history and without a high-school diploma, finding a job was nearly impossible. “I needed to step up and I thought, you know, with at least having a GED, that would be one step closer — maybe they’d look at that and be like, OK, she’s trying,” she said. At the learning center, Amanda was terrified after being out of the classroom for so long. “They pushed me telling me that I could do it, that I was smart, [and] what a good job I was doing. And once I passed my first test on the first try, I was like, ‘wow, I did that!’ And that gave me more confidence.”

Fast Forward, Amanda said, was crucial to her success. “I studied with the Fast Forward program at home every night, just about. I don’t think I could have done it without it,” she said. “For me, personally, someone explaining something to me, it doesn’t always get through. But if I can sit down and read it myself and just kind of have my own thought process on what I’m looking at and what I’m reading, that helps me a whole lot — a whole lot more.” Now, Amanda has begun taking classes at Western Kentucky Community and Technical College. She wants to become a substance abuse counselor. And like many GED graduates, Amanda is proud of her success for the example it provides for her son. “Gabriel is very proud that I have finally graduated,” she said. “He’s always known that I didn’t graduate high school and he is so proud. He’ll say, ‘Oh Mommy, you did so good.’ That’s what I want him to have: a mom that he’s proud of and not ashamed of.”

GET COLLEGE AND CAREER READY! Nine out of 10 learners who study with KET Fast Forward and take all four parts of the GED test pass — according to recent independent research. The Fast Forward Learning System prepares students for the GED® test through self-paced online courses. In them, students learn math, language arts, science, and social studies. To learn more, ask about Fast Forward at your local adult learning center or go online at KETFastForward.org. KET.org

Pilot program goes from farm to table What could be better than farm-fresh ingredients and delicious recipes made with local ingredients? A new cooking series, The Farmer and the Foodie, embodies the farm-to-table spirit that truly takes cooking back to its roots. The pilot program airs Tuesday, Aug. 23 at 10:30/9:30 pm on KET. Produced by Kentuckian Kiley Lane Parker, the series features farmer Maggie Keith, who shares how the food used on the show is grown, while the foodie, Lindsey McClave, creates simple recipes that combine the spirit of Kentucky with her flare for global cuisine. The two have a knack for creating delicious recipes using fresh, local ingredients. Their love of food and farming and interest in entertaining are a winning combination, producing such tempting dishes as Brussels sprout slaw and beef sliders and beet hummus. You can also catch the first episode Friday, Aug. 26 at 10:30/9:30 pm on KET2 and Thursday Aug. 25 at 9:30/8:30 pm on the Kentucky Channel.

SHORT TAKES Today’s KET: Providing Second Chances

Kentucky adult education center and student of the year lauded

Stories like that of Amanda Isner-Cheek, this month’s Making a Difference feature, are both heartbreaking and inspiring. Whether through a series of unfortunate circumstances or a single event that suddenly upends one’s life, anyone can find themselves in difficult situations that, at least at times, seem inescapable. When this happens to young people, it can be particularly sad as they turn away from education and the potential for a better future that it affords. But as Amanda shows us, perseverance and determination can win out. It’s a story we hear often from those we help through our Fast Forward test-prep service. Dropping out of high school does not mean dropping out of life and success. On the contrary, earning a GED credential can be the first step toward getting one’s life back on track – leading to better jobs or advanced educational opportunities. KET’s Fast Forward, which was recently shown through independent research to be an extremely effective test-prep system, is available through Kentucky’s adult learning centers and to independent learners both here and across the nation. Additionally, a growing number of businesses, recognizing the need for a more advanced workforce, have seen the value in offering Fast Forward to their employees. There are 39 million people in the U.S. without a high school diploma. We hope that, like Amanda, earning a GED credential is the foundation on which much greater success will be built.

Elliott County Adult Education has been selected as KET’s Kentucky Learning Center of the Year for its outstanding use of Fast Forward, KET’s GED® online test-preparation curriculum. During the KET visit, state Rep. Rocky Adkins presented a special citation from the House of Representatives to the center. Elliott County’s only full-time instructor, Desiree Danyelle Simmons, uses KET Fast Forward to enable students who can’t come into the center to study for their test at home. Several of these learners earned their GED® credentials this year by incorporating Fast Forward into their studies. KET staff also visited the Lyon County Adult Education Center to honor Amanda Isner-Cheek, a recent GED® graduate, as KET Fast Forward Student of the Year. (See story, page 2-3) Isner-Cheek used KET Fast Forward to prepare for her tests and passed all four — math, language arts, science, and social studies — on her first try. She also received a citation from the Kentucky House of Representatives, which was sent to her by Sen. Stan Humphries.

Sincerely, Shae Hopkins KET Executive Director and CEO 26
