LOUISVILLE’S WILLIAM SUMMERS SAYS KET PROMOTES UNITY
OMMUNITY C W INDED M
illiam Summers grew up surrounded by a sense of service. His father, William Summers IV, devoted his life to governing, serving as vice mayor of Louisville for 21 years alongside Mayor Jerry Abramson and later, Mayor Greg Fischer. And a generation earlier, his grandfather was the first AfricanAmerican Kentuckian to own a radio station, frequently broadcasting editorials and offering public commentary and information. “Service has just been engrained in my family, from a cultural standpoint,” said Summers, a vice president at Republic Bank and a member of the Louisville Board of the Commonwealth Fund for KET. “And being with a community bank, you have to be a part of the community,” he said. “Any community effort, any civic effort that you want to pursue, in the banking industry you have the opportunity to do that.” And so it was natural for Summers to be drawn to KET for its ability to foster community statewide. “One thing that KET does is it creates an atmosphere to build relationships across many boundaries,” he said. “And that’s whether it be across the rural/urban divide, across race — across all boundaries.” How KET does that, he feels, is through its mission of serving all Kentuckians. “KET’s mission — as far as community, education and diversity — KET does it all. That’s why it’s so aligned with my values and it’s been

a good fit for me to serve on the Louisville Fund Board.” In that capacity, Summers, like many community volunteers who help KET expand its mission, helps spread the word of the educational resources and other services that KET provides. But it’s KET’s programming, Summers emphasizes, that is the uniting force that brings people from across the state together in a way unique to anything else in Kentucky. “Kentucky Tonight, in my opinion, is an educational program about Kentucky, and what’s going on here in our Commonwealth.
what you may agree with. It’s education, and it’s not spun in any way. “That is important to me,” he concluded, “and I think it’s important to anyone who really wants to do what’s best.” Summers also believes programs produced by KET such as Kentucky Life and Louisville Life have a role to play in unifying the state. “Portraying our history, culture and heritage is just huge with KET,” he said. “It makes you appreciate the different parts and the different arts — just what Kentucky has to offer. A lot of people just stay where they are and don’t realize the
Public affairs and the political coverage KET has is balanced, it’s fair. You hear both sides. Regardless of where you are, you hear pros, cons, what you disagree with, what you may agree with. It’s education, and it’s not spun in any way. People need to know our history, need to know where we are today, and they need to know a vision for tomorrow,” he said. “And through the different guests and topics that are featured, that is what it does.” Also important, he said, is that KET’s public affairs programming presents balanced points of view. “Public affairs and the political coverage KET has is balanced, it’s fair. You hear both sides. Regardless of where you are, you hear pros, cons, what you disagree with,
different resources offered by different parts of the state.” Making sure KET’s mission is sustained is important to Summers, he said, and for that reason he contributes as a KET Member. “I think that if public affairs and education and your values are aligned, I think that it is your responsibility to support in the manner in which you can,” he said. “Whatever you can give it still helps make sure the mission and those values of KET continue.”
With the 50th anniversary of KET’s first broadcast just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the many ways in which KET strives to serve — and connect — communities across the Commonwealth. When KET went on the air September 23, 1968, we had only one channel, broadcasting weekdays during schools hours with the purpose of delivering quality instructional programming to every classroom in the state. For the first time, educators across Kentucky were connected through equal access to the same quality classroom content. Today, we continue to connect educators by delivering engaging and innovative online resources, used in every Kentucky public school. Similarly, as Kentucky’s only statewide broadcaster, we are uniquely positioned to connect communities from Paducah to Pikeville through the programming we produce and air every day. As William Summers observes, KET is a uniting force. Whether providing a forum for different voices to discuss the important issues that affect all Kentuckians, or showcasing the history and culture of the many different people who call Kentucky home, KET has been connecting Kentuckians throughout our 50 years. We look forward to serving this role for many generations to come — and thank you for your support. Sincerely,
Shae Hopkins

his summer, the adventure continues as we present a lineup of programs that take you to some of the most remarkable destinations in the world. Explore the vast rugged remote wilderness of Australia’s Kimberly region, as large as California but with a population of only about 40,000 people, in the new three-part series The Outback. This northwest corner contains a startling landscape, one so ancient that, in parts, it predates life on the planet. It can appear arid and empty, but is filled with animals that have adapted to its harsh climate. Many are nocturnal, well-camouflaged or prone to secrecy, from creatures reminiscent of the ancient landscape, like the saltwater crocodile, owner of the world’s most powerful jaws, to the most delicate of marsupial mice. See these animals over the course of the dramatic wet and dry seasons that dictate their cycles of life. Along the way, you’ll meet the people who live in this area, from the indigenous people who ascribe meaning to many of the animals and landscapes; archaeologists and 4

The is a forest rich in wildlife, including monkeys, jaguars and vibrant tropical birds — and contains a secret underworld that holds the key to life. The mountainous central region dominates Mexico, shaping life and culture in this diverse land. Here, discover black bears, fiery volcanoes, exquisite birds and millions of monarch butterflies. Finally, the burning north reveals a desert rich in life. From prairie dogs fighting snakes, bats hunting scorpions and tiny owls living in giant cacti, its animals have found clever ways to survive against the odds.

Educators learn about KET resources at early childhood institute Early childhood professionals from around the state came together in June for three days of professional development at the Early Childhood Institute in Louisville where KET was a sponsoring partner. KET’s Early Childhood Education team, through the Ready to Learn Initiative, brings educational television and digital media resources to children ages 2-8. Their goal is to promote early learning and school readiness, with an emphasis on supporting children from low-income, underserved communities. Educators at the institute had the opportunity to learn more about KET’s Early Childhood resources and services by visiting the KET booth — where Curious George made a special guest appearance — as well as attending two KET-led sessions where the team piloted a new Ready To Learn series. To learn more about KET’s work with Ready to Learn, visit KET.org/education/resources/rtl.
Kentucky student chosen for PBS NewsHour reporting position Edward Smith of Pleasure Ridge Park High School in Louisville is among 25 students chosen to participate in the fourth annual Student Reporting Labs Academy in Washington. The youth storytellers from 17 states will work alongside public media mentors to produce original digital content and sharpen their journalism and production skills. “I feel like everyone has a story to tell and I want to be a part of helping people share them,” said Smith, who adds that hard-news stories are his favorite. “The changes you can make and the amazing people you can meet through storytelling really do a good thing for the community.”

Majority Leader Mitch McConnell discusses career, U.S. politics Sen. Mitch McConnell, Kentucky’s Republican senior senator and the majority leader in the United States Senate, sits down with KET’s Renee Shaw for a wide-ranging interview featuring reflections on his achievements, the current state of politics and government in the nation, and many other topics. The program, which airs following KET’s highlights of Fancy Farm (see story below), also touches on state politics including public employee pensions and legislation passed in this year’s session of the Kentucky General Assembly. McConnell, who recently made Senate history as the longest serving Republican leader, also talks about his achievements in the senate as well as about statesman Henry Clay, Vice President Alben Barkley and Sen. John Sherman Cooper, important Kentucky figures on the national stage. Nationally, Shaw and McConnell talk about the vacancy on the Supreme Court, immigration issues and the wall President Trump promises to build on the U.S. southern border. Regarding the midterm election, McConnell said his party is likely to lose seats, which is common historically. McConnell, who will run again for his senate seat in 2020, also talks about foreign affairs, including North Korea and the Iran deal, as well as the Mueller investigation of Trump.
