NOVEMBER 25 – DECEMBER 4

Every day in Kentucky, people experience transformation in their lives because of KET. They achieve their goals, step into new worlds of art and science, and participate in society as informed citizens. These Kentuckians are making a difference in their families and communities, empowered by KET. “When we do our unit of DNA, chromosomes, and alleles, I am able to pull up a lesson on PBS Learning Media. They do a good job of mixing content with the questions and inquiry. It’s not overwhelming, it’s not an hour of video — it’s quick and it starts the fire for learning.” — James Wampler, Shelby County science teacher and 2016 PBS Digital Innovator

James Wampler

““We really feel PBS Kids and KET are worth our time and investment into Blake’s education.” — Karen Kelly, whose son Blake is inspired by PBS Kids programs on KET

“I really enjoy being on television and producing stories, telling stories. I have a great interest in finding new talent. There are so many talented people in the world and I just love being able to tell their stories.” — Jailen Leavell, Louisville high school student who participated in the KET PBS Student Reporting Labs program

“I studied with the FastForward program at home every night, just about. I don’t think I could have done it without it.”

“The work KET has done has helped us raise our percentages of children who are kindergarten-ready. Right now, its at about 80 percent, and the state average is 55 percent.”

— Amanda Isner-Cheek, who passed all four parts of the GED ® test on the first try with the help of KET’s adult learning system, Fast Forward (Fast Forward learners who take all four sections of the GED ® test have a pass rate of 90 percent)

— Dr. Henry Webb, Floyd County Schools superintendent, who has led his county to become one of the top districts in the state. KET’s resources have helped Floyd County make enormous strides in early childhood

“KET is created by Kentuckians, for Kentuckians — but also for the rest of the world. It is important to support KET because it’s showing what we are, our history, and who we are.” — Jon Carloftis, Summer Celebration host and garden designer

TIME OF YEAR

T

emperatures are dropping but things are heating up at KET for WinterPledge, our annual on-air fundraiser. During this time, you have the opportunity to renew your membership with KET and directly assist with fulfilling KET’s mission. Our programs are free for everyone, and we ask you to help ensure KET remains strong. This year, our newest member benefit, KET Passport, can enhance your viewing by providing more programs available anytime through on-demand viewing online, on Roku, and AppleTV. Over 1,000 episodes, delivered on your schedule, are available only to members of KET who make an annual donation of $60 or more. Headlining this year’s WinterPledge is the new program California Dreamin’: The Songs of the Mamas and the Papas, where you can celebrate 50 years of the harmonious pop-folk-rock group that defined an era. And speaking of icons — in the 1990s, four of the biggest names in country music joined forces: Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson as the Highwaymen. You can see “the Mount Rushmore of country music” in their 1990 concert at the Nassau Colosseum. 4

8 Agatha Christie’s Partners in Crime KET Begins Thursday, Dec. 8 • 10/9 pm KET2 Begins Saturday, Dec. 10 • 11/10 pm Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple weren’t Dame Agatha Christie’s only creations. She also invented Tommy and Tuppence Beresford, an ordinary married couple who stumble into spy craft and end up being rather good at it. In these new adaptations of two classic mysteries, set in 1950s Britain at the start of the Cold War, the pair returns to the small screen, bickering, sweet on each other, and soon knee-deep in danger. In the first episode, they meet an agitated young woman who mysteriously disappears. Soon the pair is searching for the woman, a secret recording, and a Soviet hit man named Brown.

But what did he really do that night in the Arles? What was his state of mind? No one has been clear on the details. Now, a researcher has spent five years piecing together a meticulous picture of his life, uncovering definitive evidence to create a detailed timeline leading up to the night of the event, explaining the driving force behind the story that dominates art history.

21 Nature: Snow Chick KET Wednesday, Dec. 21 • 8/7 pm KET2 Saturday, Dec. 24 • 6/5 pm For two months of blizzards and temperatures diving to 80 degrees below zero, each Emperor penguin dad must nurture and protect his single egg offspring. KET’s Hopkins re-appointed to PBS board KET Executive Director Shae Hopkins has been appointed to a second term on the PBS Board of Directors. “Thanks to the outstanding commitment of the talented executives on the PBS Board, our enterprise has the leadership it needs to navigate these exciting and complicated times,” said PBS President Paula Kerger. “I am tremendously grateful to the members just joining our board and those who already work so hard on behalf of our mission and the American public.” “I’m very honored to have been re-elected to the PBS Board of Directors. KET is among the leading public broadcasting services in the nation, and this re-election to the PBS board is testament to the respect that public broadcasting leaders across the country have for KET,” said Hopkins. The 27-person PBS Board includes both professional directors, who are station leaders, and general directors, who serve as lay members of the board, as well as the PBS president. The PBS Board of Directors is responsible for governing and setting policy for PBS.

KET receives community award from The Links KET was recently honored with a 2016 Community Award from the Louisville Chapter of The Links Inc., an international, not-for-profit corporation whose members include nearly 14,000 women of color across 283 chapters in 41 states. The award includes a $1,000 grant to support KET’s programs and services. In selecting KET, Carolyn Tandy, president of the Louisville Chapter of The Links, noted KET’s central role in “providing Kentuckians with the information needed to participate in political engagement” and in “educating, inspiring, informing, and connecting citizens through the power of public media.”

Receiving the Links Community Service Award were KET’s Renee Shaw and Julie Schmidt, left, from Links members Laura Douglas and President Carolyn Tandy.

In Eastern Kentucky, KET invited families with children ages 5 through 8 to participate in a series of Family Creative Learning workshops featuring the PBS KIDS ScratchJr app throughout November at Pine Mountain Settlement School. The families created their own interactive stories and games starring PBS KIDS characters. A similar series was held in Louisville in October. With funding from US Bank, KET offers free Technology for the Preschool Classroom workshops to preschool teachers in Western Kentucky. There, teachers learn how to use technology effectively in the classroom while gaining proficiency in KET and PBS KIDS resources. They also are able to borrow mobile devices to implement what they’ve learned into their own classrooms.

Goodman named executive director of Kentucky Humanities Council Longtime KET journalist Bill Goodman has been named the new executive director of the Kentucky Humanities Council. The host of multiple KET productions will remain at KET through the end of the year. Goodman began his tenure at KET serving as host and managing editor of Kentucky Tonight. Since 1996, he has been at the center of thoughtful, in-depth discussions on issues of concern to the people of Kentucky. “For more than 20 years, KET has given me the opportunity to communicate with the wonderful people who call Kentucky home,” said Goodman. “I have been blessed with the good fortune to represent KET on the air and in many communities around the state. I am grateful to our founder, O. Leonard Press; our executive director and CEO, Shae Hopkins; and many colleagues who have assisted me along the way.” Goodman has also hosted bookclub@ket featuring discussions on books by Kentucky authors. Another great year, thanks to you

T

his past year saw the most popular drama ever on public television, Masterpiece’s “Downton Abbey,” come to its exhilarating and satisfying conclusion. Saying goodbye to these memorable characters was bittersweet, as is the recent news that we’ll be bidding farewell this month to our own Bill Goodman as he takes on his new role at the Kentucky Humanities Council. But these are the moments that allow us to take a step back and appreciate where we’ve been and look ahead with confidence and enthusiasm to where we’re going. From delivering unmatched public affairs coverage to tackling the growing opioid epidemic — From bringing the world to Kentucky to telling Kentucky’s stories — And from helping ensure our youngest citizens are prepared to succeed in school to bringing learning to life for people of all ages, KET has had a tremendous year. All of this was made possible through you, our generous supporters. We thank you and ask you to consider a year-end, tax-deductible gift to continue supporting the great programs and services you enjoy, trust, and value. Call us at 800-866-0366 or donate online at KET.org. As always, we wish you and your family a very happy holidays and wonderful new year. Sincerely,
