SEVEN GRUMPY

SEASONS Celebrate WinterPledge with a ‘Doc Martin’ special and more!

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

“I liked Fast Forward a lot. It explained things to me that I didn’t understand before. Like with multiplying and dividing fractions, I never got that in school. The way the teachers taught it on the video just clicked in my head.” — Kaitlyn Beghtol, who earned a GED®credential with KET’s Fast Forward online test preparation learning system

“If a major corporation is looking to relocate to Kentucky, one of the things they’re looking for is the availability of a skilled workforce — KET’s Fast Forward really addresses the problem.” — Ted Bassett, Businessman and horseman

“We want other families to have the same educational opportunities for their kids, the same programming options for their children, that we have been fortunate enough to have both for ourselves and our children.” — Dr. Kaveh Sajadi (KET Member) on the quality of PBS Kids programs delivered by KET

December 2015

KET IS KENTUCKY’S LARGEST CLASSROOM. More than 1 million people use KET each week. For teachers, students, and preschoolers, we provide educational resources for the classroom — as well as enlightening, inspiring, and enriching lifelong-learning programs all day, every day for every Kentuckian.

“There’s a wide diversity in the programs, and they provide a lot of information that I find very useful… To be a well-informed Kentuckian, KET is a valuable resource.” — Maria Bush, Frankfort viewer who values KET’s Legislative Coverage and public affairs programming

“Physics was amazing — I got an A in the class and I passed the AP test. When I took the ACT… in the Vocabulary section, even if I didn’t know exactly what the word meant, if I could relate it to a Latin root I had a much better chance of getting it right. — Millie Ronkainen, WKU student who earned college credit as a homeschooled high schooler with KET’s Distance Learning Latin and physics courses

“KET provides such a significant, meaningful role in the state as being the only statewide media resource. It’s the only media entity charged with serving the people, not selling them something.” — Bill Jones, community division manager for US Bank and Commonwealth Fund for KET board member

EXPLORE KENTUCKY New Health Three60 examines the out-of-control child Families of children who have extreme behavior problems are sadly similar. Many live in fear of what could happen: aggressive and menacing outbursts, hyperactivity and sleeplessness, inability to reason or follow rules, running away, and even involvement with the court system. In Health Three60 “The Out of Control Child: Help for Families,” Renee Shaw and guests discuss children with extreme behavior problems, examine causes and the role of family dynamics, and offer hope and solutions. It airs Monday, Dec. 7 at 9/8 pm on KET. This program tackles many of the problems Foster and Nikki McCarl share their family’s painful journey to get help for their daughter associated with this issue, including what is at the root of this behavior, what is the most effective help for these children and families, and where it can be found in Kentucky. Also addressed is the issue of who pays for such care. Health Three60 “The Out of Control Child: Help for Families” is funded in part by a grant from the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky.

SAMPLE THE BOURBON INDUSTRY IN KENTUCKY Bourbon is booming in Kentucky and around the world. Just in the last few years, the number of distilleries has tripled, the number of people employed in the industry has nearly doubled, and there are more barrels of bourbon aging in Kentucky than there are citizens of the Commonwealth. Kentucky Bourbon Tales: Distilling the Family Business introduces viewers to the colorful characters who craft America’s native spirit, explains how bourbon is made, and details how the beverage became a global phenomena. It airs Sunday, Dec. 20 at 2/1 pm on KET and Sunday, Dec. 13 at 7/6 pm and multiple times throughout the month on the Kentucky Channel.

Your Support Helps Make KET Possible

CAT or CARD? Explore both in ‘The Rivalry’ In some places in the South, they ask you where you’re from. Others, where you go to church. In Kentucky, you’re apt to be asked who do you cheer for: the University of Kentucky or the University of Louisville? The history, depth, and passion of the rivalry between the in-state universities is explored by filmmakers Rory Delaney (U of L fan) and Wade Smith (UK) in The Rivalry: Red v. Blue airing Monday, Dec. 21 at 9/8 pm on KET2 and Sunday, Dec. 27 at 2:30/1:30 pm on KET. The program covers the birth of the rivalry in 1983, when the schools first faced one another, and why the rivalry is so intense — and what makes it different from others.

SHORT TAKES Today’s KET: Education is our gift to you Education is the gift that keeps on giving. Every day, KET is pleased to share a rich harvest of homegrown productions that not only serve to educate but also celebrate the rich culture and character of Kentucky. Our public affairs programs are uniquely focused on the issues that affect our communities and our commonwealth, while series like Kentucky Life, Kentucky Collectibles, and more showcase Kentucky’s exceptional beauty, history, and heritage. KET also creates hundreds of instructional resources for Kentuckians of all ages. From childcare provider training to middle school math, and from professional development for educators to our nationally acclaimed GED® and workplace readiness resources, KET’s programs and services are used in every public school and by more than one million Kentuckians each week. KET is here to support lifelong learning and to help Kentuckians of all ages achieve their dreams. During this holiday season, we thank you for your support to make it all possible and wish you and your family all the best.

Bill Goodman named to KBA Hall of Fame Bill Goodman, longtime host and managing editor of KET’s weekly series Kentucky Tonight and One to One as well as co-host of KET’s election coverage, was inducted into the Kentucky Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame recently. “On behalf of everyone at KET, I congratulate Bill on this tremendous honor,” said KET executive director and CEO Shae Hopkins. “Bill’s talents as a balanced, well-informed interviewer and moderator allow us to bring our viewers indepth, thoughtful discussions each week on the issues that matter most to them.”

KET Chinese resource honored nationally The National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA) presented KET with its 2015 Award for Instructional Media for the online resource Chinese Folktale: The Little Rabbits. Combining colorful illustrations with narration and singing, this dynamic video story was produced by KET to meet the growing needs of Kentucky educators who are teaching Chinese to elementary school audiences using an immersion approach. “We’re proud to have The Little Rabbits recognized nationally as being one of the best digital instructional media resources available for educators,” said Teresa Day, the project’s executive producer. KET has produced more than 2,700 instructional resources since 2010 for the national PBS Learning Media service.
