DE CE M B ER 2017
AT THE BEGINNING OF EACH WEEK, I LOOK AT MY CURRICULUM AND I IMMEDIATELY GO TO KET AND PBS RESOURCES TO LOOK FOR DIGITAL MEDIA THAT SUPPORTS THE LESSONS I’M GOING TO BE BRINGING THAT WEEK. ULTIMATELY, I’M PREPARING THESE KIDS TO GO OUT INTO THE WORLD AND BECOME SUCCESSFUL ADULTS. AND IN ORDER TO DO THAT, THEY HAVE TO BE ABLE TO USE TECHNOLOGY. MANY OF MY STUDENTS HAVE TECHNOLOGY AT HOME, BUT THERE ARE A LOT WHO DO NOT. IF WE CAN EXPOSE THEM TO TECHNOLOGY, WE CAN BE ‘CHAIN BREAKERS.’ THEY DON’T HAVE TO LIVE IN POVERTY.” ASHLEY JUDD
JACKSON COUNTY FIRST-GRADE TEACHER AND 2017 PBS DIGITAL INNOVATOR

DE CE M B ER 2017
acked with shocks and surprises, the heartwarming drama Last Tango in Halifax returns to KET with an all-new holiday special. In a two-part program, Last Tango in Halifax Holiday Special continues the compelling story of childhood sweethearts reunited after nearly 60 years. First, Caroline moves the family to a farmhouse, while Alan has a difficult conversation with Gillian. And then in part two, Gillian makes a life-changing decision and Alan is forced to confront his fears. And there’s more of your British favorites! Join the midwives as they battle snow, ice, power cuts, and frozen pipes to provide patient care during the coldest winter in 300 years in the Call the Midwife Holiday Special. Valerie helps a young couple who experience a traumatic birth and Sister Julienne tries to reunite a family. What would Christmas be without baked treats? In this Christmas master class, The Great British Baking Show judges, Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood, detail how to make perfect mince pies, Christmas pudding, Christmas cake, and more. Along with holiday programs airing all month long, two Kentucky collegiate choirs will help make your season bright with song. Join Murray State University’s concert choir, brass choir, and jazz band for a diverse concert. Featured are traditional carols like “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day,” fun seasonal favorites like “Santa Baby” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” and reverent hymns such as “Silent Night” and “O Holy Night,” and more. Pay a visit to Berea for a diverse mix of Christmas and holiday music performed by the students and music faculty of Berea College. The program includes performances by the Berea College Folk Roots Ensemble, Women’s Chorus, Chamber Singers, Concert Choir, Black Music Ensemble, and Bluegrass Ensemble. The program also features a Nativity reading from Berea’s newly acquired copy of the St. John’s Bible, the first handwritten and illuminated Bible published since the end of the 15th century and the invention of the modern printing press. There are even more holiday specials airing throughout the month. Check the listing pages throughout this issue of Visions for details, or go online at KET.org/tv-schedules.

Young Hyacinth
Handel’s Messiah and the Foundling Hospital
KET2 Saturday, Nov. 25 • 9/8 pm KET Sunday, Nov. 26 • 6/5 pm
KET Sunday, Dec. 10 • 9/8 pm KET2 Wednesday, Dec. 13 • 10/9 pm
Live from the Artists Den: Lady Antebellum
In this Keeping Up Appearances prequel, it’s the late 1950s, and young Hyacinth dreams of her own home, matching china, and a bedroom painted in pastel shades. Sadly, Hyacinth’s sisters Daisy, Rose, and Violet don’t live up to her high standards. They all live together in a crowded cottage, along with Hyacinth’s darling daddy. When Hyacinth begins work as a maid in the Cooper-Smith household, she has a glimpse of how the elegant upper classes lives — and there can be no looking back.
Handel’s Messiah is one of the most recognizable pieces in Western music, but the fascinating story of how this beloved piece came to public attention and helped to save thousands of children is largely unknown. Return with historian Amada Vickery to 1750 London in this drama/ documentary that offers rich insight into 18th-century charity, Handel’s music, and their unexpected intersections — and how this new era of philanthropic giving turned Messiah into an icon.
The multi-platinum country trio performs at the historic United Palace in Washington Heights. Surrounded by the rococo detail of the vaudeville theater-turned-church and cultural center, Charles Kelley, Hillary Scott, and Dave Haywood keep fans on their feet for their 12-song set that covers both their catalog of smash singles like “Need You Now” and “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore,” and songs from their upcoming album, Heart Break.

Join us for a preview of new season of ‘Victoria’
Kids problem-solve at KET’s Odd Squad Camp
Jenna Coleman returns for a new season as the young queen who wants it all — romance, power, an heir, and personal freedom — on Masterpiece: Victoria, Season 2, premiering Jan. 14. Get a sneak preview of the first episode in two special screenings. In Lexington, join us Saturday, Jan. 6 at the Kentucky Theater. Doors open at 9 am and the show begins at 10 am. In Louisville, come to the Bomhard Theater at the Kentucky Center Thursday, Jan. 11. Doors open at 6 pm and the show begins at 7 pm. Both events are free, but registration is required. Go online at KET.org/events to reserve your seat.
Young “agents” at KET’s Odd Squad: Be the Agent Camp were on the case at the Eastern Kentucky Science Center in Floyd County. Over the course of two days, kids ages 4-6 explored STEM concepts through solving a case and then reporting on it. Follow @KETEarlyChildhood on Instagram or @KETEarlyEd on Twitter to learn more about KET’s efforts to foster school readiness by encouraging families and communities to work together.

MORE TO EXPLORE
I
t’s been more than 50 years since the U.S. Surgeon General outlined the health risks of cigarette smoking, yet smoking kills nearly 480,000 people each year. Kentucky has the highest smoking rates in the nation. In some counties, nearly 40 percent of adults use tobacco. Programs in the KET Health Initiative examine the health and financial effects of smoking, research-based strategies to reduce smoking rates, youth smoking prevention, and tobacco cessation treatments. They are funded, in part, by the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky. More information is available at KET.org/health/smoking. African American Museum “Calling It Quits” highlights effective treatment of smoking
Only 5 percent of smokers who quit cold turkey without professional help are successful. KET’s Calling It Quits: Real Help to Stop Smoking examines evidence-based strategies that dramatically improve a person’s chances of quitting — and never starting again. In this new program, learn about seven FDA-approved medications as well as supportive counseling approaches designed to boost motivation and confidence. Narrated by Kentucky native and author Silas House.

OPIOID RECOVERY IS FOCUS OF UNIQUE KET PROGRAM As the opioid crisis continues to devastate families and our communities, people need to see that recovery is possible. Never Met a Stranger brings two people in longterm recovery from substance-use disorder to the KET studios to meet for the first time. Without a host or moderator, they answer a set of powerful questions that enable them to share their inspirational stories of struggle, strength, and hope. Learn more at KET.org/ health/opioids.
