KET’s Fast Forward GED ® prep course helps young mom achieve her goals

wo people wearing black ski masks and white jump suits robbed a convenience store on the outskirts of town just hours ago. Police are now on the scene…. Kaitlyn Beghtol wants to be on that scene. The 23-year-old specifically wants to be a crime scene investigator or a police detective. Kaitlyn is now enrolled at Bryant and Stratton, an online college, to make her dream a reality. In fact, she has already successfully completed one semester of college. Just a few months ago, however, her future didn’t look so bright. “I left high school right before winter break of 2009,” Kaitlyn recalls. “I was 17 and decided I was going to get married. It was a stupid mistake.” After a divorce, Kaitlyn made a spur-of-the-moment decision to travel. She soon found herself in Colorado, a new boyfriend at her side. Two miscarriages later, she was pregnant. The boyfriend didn’t even show up at the hospital to see their newborn daughter. Kaitlyn was on her own to raise Lylianna. “Having Lylianna made me more responsible,” says Kaitlyn. “I now not only have to look out for myself, I have to look out for her. I’ve grown up a lot. She is the main reason I wanted to get my GED.” Earning her high school credential was also the first step toward her goal of working in criminal justice. But Kaitlyn not only had to care for her child, she also had no transportation and little money. However, she did have desire and determination in abundance.
Last year, that strength led her into the classroom of Pat McKinley, director of the Todd County Adult Education Program in Elkton, a small community near Hopkinsville in Western Kentucky. It was the end of June. Kaitlyn wanted to start college in the fall, less than two months away. Was it possible?
“SHE PASSED ALL THE SUBJECTS ON THE FIRST TRY, EVEN EARNING AN HONORS SCORE ON SOCIAL STUDIES. I WAS AMAZED.” Fortunately for Kaitlyn, KET had recently launched a brand-new way to prepare for high school equivalency tests. The Fast Forward online learning system also solved another problem: Kaitlyn didn’t need to leave home to use it. Best of all for Kaitlyn, it was designed to get learners to their goal — as the name says — fast. The computer-based Fast Forward covers all subjects and critical thinking skills, and features online tools and a format conducive to doing well on the GED exam. Learners have the added benefit of practicing with the kind of technology they will use on the test. Kaitlyn chose to work on one subject at a time. Her pre-test showed she should be able to pass language arts and science with a little
review. Her social studies score was borderline. Her math scores were most concerning. Kaitlyn recalls: “I would work before Lylianna woke up. I would do as much as I could until she took a nap and then work again after she went to bed. “I liked Fast Forward a lot. It explained things to me that I didn’t understand before. Like with multiplying and dividing fractions, I never got that in school. The way the teachers taught it on the Fast Forward video just clicked in my head.” Pat checked in with Kaitlyn by phone every week or two. “She was humming away,” Pat says. “Transportation was a huge issue for her, so Fast Forward allowed us to break that barrier.” Math was the academic barrier that most concerned both teacher and student. “I hadn’t had anyone pass the math test without coming into the center and going through our program,” Pat says. “Kaitlyn told me she thought she had it after doing the Fast Forward math section. She passed the math test on the first try. She passed all the subjects on the first try, even earning an honors score on social studies. I was amazed.” Kaitlyn herself is naturally proud of her achievement, particularly as a role model for her daughter. “Someday when she gets older, I will tell her about this,” Kaitlyn says. “If your mom can do this, you can do whatever it is, too. I will tell her she should find a way to just keep on going.”

Wild World New series combines spectacular natural history with compelling human stories
T
his month, experience nature as we almost never see it on television in the new series EARTH A New Wild. This five-part documentary takes a fresh look at humankind’s relationship to the planet’s wildest places and most fascinating species. It premieres Wednesday, Feb. 4 with back-toback episodes “Home,” followed by “Plains,” beginning at 9/8 pm on KET.

The series is hosted by Dr. M. Sanjayan, a leading conservation scientist, who takes viewers on a stunning visual journey to explore how humans are inextricably woven into every aspect of the planet’s natural systems. With 45 shoots in 29 different countries, the series features spectacular natural history footage from the most striking places on Earth, recording encounters between wild animals and the people who live and work with them. With up-close looks at a range of species, from giant pandas to humpback whales and African lions to Arctic reindeer, Sanjayan reveals that co-habitations with animals can work — and be mutually beneficial. “Earth has entered a new epoch and we are now living on a planet where our impact is felt everywhere,” says Sanjayan, an expert in conservation and wildlife ecology who has worked with the Nature Conservancy on
significant conservation efforts across the globe. “This series is a first for nature films; it turns the camera around and acknowledges that spectacular nature doesn’t exist in isolation, that humans are part of the picture,” he said. “In this way, we show viewers not only stunning, never-before-seen natural history, but also discover extraordinary stories that challenge the very notion that humans are separate from nature, and how, in the new wild, humans and wildlife can — and must — thrive together.”

Starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, the 1942 release was based on an unproduced play entitled Everybody Comes to Rick’s. It was shaped by six writers from day to day as the filming progressed — and no one knew how the film would end and who would use the two exit visas to flee Casablanca.

some places in the South, they ask you where you’re from. Others, where you go to church. In Kentucky, you’re apt to be asked who do you cheer for: the University of Kentucky or the University of Louisville? The history, depth, and passion of the rivalry between the in-state universities is explored by filmmakers Rory Delaney (die-hard U of L fan) and Wade Smith (who cheers for Big Blue) in The Rivalry: Red v. Blue premiering Monday, Feb. 9 at 9/8 pm on KET. The documentary features interviews with crucial figures in the college basketball scene in Kentucky, including Denny Crum, Joe B. Hall, Derek Anderson, Luke Whitehead, Jim Host, Gov. John Y. Brown, Billy Reed, Oscar Combs, Peyton Siva, Mike Rutherford, Matt Jones, Gorgui Dieng, and many others. But beyond coaches, players, and commentators are the die-hard fans, and the program includes interviews with plenty, including rival barbers in downtown Louisville, the lone

Go ‘Inside the Common Core’ with Education Matters In 2010, Kentucky became the first state to adopt the national Common Core State Standards in mathematics and English/language arts. Four years later, the February edition of Education Matters takes a look at how the Common Core has been adapted and transformed into Kentucky Core Academic Standards — and how the standards are being implemented statewide. “Inside the Common Core” airs Monday, Feb. 23 at 9/8 pm on KET. The episode includes a panel discussion of these topics, led by Education Matters host Bill Goodman. It also includes visits to two schools — Second Street Elementary in Frankfort and Lafayette High School in Lexington — to explore the integration of the standards into Kentucky classrooms. At Second Street, a second-grade language-arts lesson requires students to participate in group activities, and read independently. At Lafayette High School, see an Algebra II classroom where students regularly engage in mathematical discussions as part of their learning and assessment.

The Big Burn: American Experience KET Tuesday, Feb. 3 • 9/8 pm KET2 Sunday, Feb. 8 • 9/8 pm In the summer of 1910, an unimaginable wildfire devoured more than 3 million acres across the Northern Rockies, confronting the fledgling U.S. Forest Service with a catastrophe that would define the agency and the nation’s fire policy for the rest of the 20th century and beyond. A cautionary tale of heroism and sacrifice, arrogance and greed, hubris and, ultimately, humility in the face of nature’s frightening power, “The Big Burn” was inspired by the best-selling book by Timothy Egan.
The Forgotten Plague: American Experience KET Tuesday, Feb. 10 • 9/8 pm KET2 Sunday, Feb. 15 • 9/8 pm By the early 19th century, the most deadly killer in human history, tuberculosis, had killed one in seven of all the people who had ever lived. Throughout the 1800s, it struck the U.S., with a vengeance, and the battle against TB had a profound and lasting impact on America, shaping medicine and science, social habits, economic development, western expansion, and government policy.

Medieval Lives: Birth, Marriage, Death KET Begins Sunday, Feb. 8 • 3/2 pm KET2 Begins Sunday, Feb. 8 • 8/7 pm Historian and author Helen Castor explores how the people of the Middle Ages handled the most fundamental moments of transition in life. For them, the teachings of the Catholic Church shaped views across Western Europe, but at the end of that era, the Church would find itself in the grip of momentous change and the ways of birth, marriage, and death would never be quite the same again.
Out of Print KET Monday, Feb. 2 • 9/8 pm Follow the turbulent, exciting, and somewhat controversial evolutionary journey of the written word in the digital age. Is the book as we know it dead? Is this question relevant in our always-on, digital world? This program sets out on a quest to find out what the written word, physical books, and the privilege of instant access to information at any time mean to us both as individuals and as a society.
Nova: Building Wonders: Hagia Sophia – Istanbul’s Ancient Mystery KET Wednesday, Feb. 25 • 9/8 pm The soaring dome of Hagia Sophia dominates Istanbul’s skyline. Whether serving as Christian church, Islamic mosque, or secular museum, this magnificent building has inspired reverence and awe. For 800 years, it was the largest enclosed building in the world; the Statue of Liberty can fit beneath its dome with room to spare. How has it survived its location on one of the world’s most active seismic faults, which has inflicted a dozen devastating earthquakes since it was built in 537 AD?

For the 40 million Americans — almost one in five — without a high school diploma, those possibilities may very well include a better education and a better job. As with Kaitlyn Beghtol, profiled in our “Making A Difference” this month, our sincere hope is that KET can be a part of making such dreams come true. KET’s Fast Forward, a flexible online test-prep system that launched last year with the all-new GED test, has received positive feedback from students and adult educators alike. From the individual studying at home to businesses, adult education centers, public television stations, and others dedicated to helping dropouts earn a degree, Fast Forward is at work in Kentucky and the nation to help and support adult learners. And, as part of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s American Graduate initiative, the inspiring KET-produced series Dropping Back In has been seen on PBS stations across the nation. Through both of these initiatives, we’re working to inspire change and provide hope to millions. Whether helping dropouts earn their degree or ensuring that our youngest citizens have the tools they need to succeed the moment they enter kindergarten, we will continue our efforts across the educational spectrum. Because when education is not a barrier, the possibilities are endless.
It must be Masterpiece!
“Downton Abbey” fans from near and far gathered for two events in December previewing the first episode of the fifth season of the wildly popular Masterpiece Classic series. Above, fans posed in front of a Highclere Castle backdrop, the real-life English home that stands in for Downton Abbey, at the event at the Kentucky Center in Louisville. A second event drew hundreds more fans to the Kentucky Theatre in Lexington.
