HOPEANDHEALING PERSONAL STORIES IN ‘JOURNEY TO RECOVERY’ HELP IN BATTLE AGAINST ADDICTION “There’s no greater agony,” the late memoirist and poet Maya Angelou once observed, “than bearing an untold story inside you.” Throughout human history, stories have always been important, and those who have faced addiction in particular can benefit from telling them. Sharing facilitates healing, but it also offers hope to those facing a similar path. Now, KET’s documentary Journey to Recovery — which recounts the personal anguish, confusion, heartbreak, and the ultimate success of people whose lives have been touched by substance abuse — has become an important outreach tool for Operation UNITE. “Every time Journey to Recovery is viewed, it gives people such hope,” said Nancy Hale, CEO of UNITE, one of several agencies featured in the cornerstone program of KET’s ongoing Opioid Initiative. “It helps people understand some basic truths about recovery: it’s a way of life, it’s about healing, it’s a process — and there are many people in recovery,” she said. “It means you’re not alone — millions have gone down this road before you and they are now happy, productive, and sober.” Hale’s own story began as she and her husband, John, both Rockcastle County educators, were confronted with the addiction problems of their son, Joshua, and nephew Eddie Hale. In every one of those roles, I have known the pain and tragedy of addiction and substance abuse.” Produced by KET in 2017, Journey to Recovery brings its message to audiences at UNITE county coalition meetings, at its summer camps for

In time, the brain can be molded around recovery and heal.” With its emphasis on the importance of connections and community, it is not surprising that Journey to Recovery has become an instrument to facilitate community among people providing addiction and recovery ser-

A non-profit, Operation UNITE was formed in the 1990s at the direction of U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers when it became apparent that Eastern Kentucky in particular was facing a monumental battle against drugs. Now, after initially focusing on law enforcement, it has turned toward helping people find the tools they need to overcome addiction, including understanding the physical changes that occur within the body — also a main theme of Journey to Recovery. “Scientists have discovered that repeated use of drugs and alcohol can actually change the structure of your

She also points to KET’s reputation as a quality provider of informative and educational programming as a key to Journey to Recovery’s success in community outreach. “I think it’s good KET has taken a step in promoting not only awareness of the problem but promoting solutions to the problem: providing hope, and facilitating recovery,” she said. “There are all kinds of documentaries out there on the opioid epidemic and how many lives are being lost. But this one is different. This one gives you hope. “And that is so important today.”
50 years serving Kentucky
T
his year marks the 50th anniversary of KET’s first broadcast to homes and classrooms across the Commonwealth. Thanks to the vision of Len Press, KET’s founder, and the support of lawmakers, donors, educators, volunteers, and so many others, KET has become a trusted service used by more than one million Kentuckians each week and recognized as a national leader in public media. Throughout this year, we’ll be sharing a few of KET’s significant milestones and accomplishments that you’ve helped make possible. As we celebrate five decades of service, we embrace the future, standing firmly on our founding ideals of public service and education, and will continue to seek new ways to better serve you, your family, and our Commonwealth.

COVER STORY
THRONE
A WOMAN’S PLACE IS ON THE Victoria returns — now a young queen, wife, and mother
J
enna Coleman returns for a new season as the young queen who wants it all — romance, power, an heir, and personal freedom — on Masterpiece: Victoria, Season 2, airing in seven breathtaking episodes. Joining the cast is legendary actress Dame Diana Rigg (lately of Game of Thrones), who plays the Duchess of Buccleuch, the court’s new Mistress of the Robes — a fount of old-fashioned good sense for the queen, who is now in the throes of motherhood. Tom Hughes stars as the queen’s smoldering consort, Prince Albert; also returning from last season are Rufus Sewell as Lord Melbourne, Victoria’s first prime minister and intimate friend. Victoria’s first season focused on the teenage queen’s audacious upstaging of her handlers to chart her own path. This season also features the return of Sir Robert Peel, the reforming British prime minister, at odds with his sovereign over policy; the Duchess of Kent, Victoria’s manipulative mother, still battling her headstrong daughter; and the Duke of Wellington, the hero of the Battle of Waterloo, now a retired prime minister and sage mentor to the queen. Now, the young queen adapts to motherhood after the birth of her first child, a daughter (to the disappointment of many). Meanwhile, the disaster of the Anglo-Afghan War unfolds abroad, and the catastrophic Irish potato famine begins to wreak havoc. In other foreign affairs, a royal state visit to France is in the offing. Most intriguing to Prince Albert is the budding Industrial Revolution, which is now sweeping England. There is Charles Babbage’s mechanical calculator, a collaborative project with the bewitching Ada Lovelace, daughter of the scandalous Lord Byron. Then there is William Fothergill Cooke’s miraculous electrical telegraph, not to mention Marc Isambard Brunel’s daring — and dangerous — Thames Tunnel. What an extraordinary time to be queen!

Trace impact of opioid crisis nationally in new documentary
As the Kentucky General Assembly begins its 2018 regular session, turn to KET on-air and online to follow the legislative process, policy discussions, committee meetings, and chamber sessions. Watch live coverage statewide on broadcast and cable with KET’s Kentucky Channel. Live and archived coverage is online at KET.org/legislature and on the KET Legislative Coverage App for Apple and Android devices (download at KET.org/apps). Watch Legislative Update, airing Mondays through Thursdays at 11/10 pm and Fridays at 8:30/7:30 pm on KET, for reports on each day’s activities during the regular session. Join host Renee Shaw for Kentucky Tonight, airing Monday nights at 8/7 pm on KET, for discussions with lawmakers, stakeholders, and policy leaders about the issues being debated in Frankfort. Hear from reporters covering the General Assembly on Comment on Kentucky, Friday nights at 8/7 pm on KET.
One of the most troubling and lethal health issues in the United States is the opioid epidemic. Learn the history of the crisis and explore possible solutions in Understanding the Opioid Epidemic, airing Wednesday, Jan. 17 at 10/9 pm on KET. As part of KET’s Inside Opioid Addiction initiative, the national documentary combines stories of people and communities impacted by the epidemic, along with information from experts and those at the frontlines of the crisis.
50 YEARS OF BRINGING LEARNING TO LIFE This year, we’re celebrating! Fifty years ago this September, KET signed on the air for the first time, broadcasting weekdays during school hours. Join us throughout the year in remembering the many milestones we’ve passed as our service to Kentucky has expanded over a half century. In 1978, when only a small handful of television stations were providing broad coverage of state legislatures and one year before C-SPAN first provided coverage of the U.S. Congress, KET launched its regular coverage of the Kentucky General Assembly. A half-hour and hour-long program each weeknight provided what O. Leonard Press, KET’s founder, described as an “unvarnished view” of the legislative process.
