ou only have to speak to Joe Steier, CEO of Signature Healthcare, for a few moments to realize that what he calls the three pillars of his company are more than just a mission statement tucked away as a wistful idea. Steier’s faith is in the power of education, spirituality, and something he calls inter-preneurship, or fostering innovation among its employees.

own pace for the GED test online. Signature provides access to these materials to employees, gives them a place to study and use the computer, and covers the costs for the test. Steier has the education himself to know of what he speaks. He’s earned multiple degrees in accounting, business, and education (a doctorate) — not to mention a Certified Nursing Assistant certification, the first level

and for their family members. In this way, he says, the company can be a positive influence in the community as well. “What we have tried to do is be more of a social movement than a corporation,” Steier said. With a vice president of spirituality also on board, Steier has marshaled the chaplains Signature has in every facility to help along those who wish to get a GED certificate but might be reluctant to step forward and admit their lack of education. Human resources representative are also trained as liaisons.

To achieve this goal, KET’s GED test preparation materials have provided Steier the tools he needs to build learning among his employees since 2011. “I didn’t realize the GED was going to be as big a thing as it was,” said Steier, a Louisville native who moved his company from Florida to Louisville in 2009. It operates 143 long-term, home health, and acutecare facilities in 12 states. “But I started hearing, behind closed doors, people who would say, ‘you know, I never finished highschool because I got pregnant or my dad was laid off and I went to work,’’ he said. “People had the emotional intelligence, the empathy, to be a caregiver but not having a high-school education was blocking their way.” Signature helps remove that blockade by offering instruction through KET’s Fast Forward online GED test preparation system. Fast Forward is designed to prepare learners though its educational content and to familiarize them with the computer skills necessary to take the GED test. Students study at their

many of his employees must pass in order to move along what he calls the “GED to Ph. D.” path. “We had people we were trying to help that we told, ‘let’s put a résumé together.’ But they had no idea how. And things like finance classes — we wanted to give employees access to all these things that might be holding them back from being good, productive citizens,” he said. Signature has estimated that approximately 800 of its 11,000 employees could benefit from GED instruction. About 100 employees have enrolled per year since it began the partnership with KET. Signature, which among its upper management has a vice-president for learning, has prepared a convenient place on its website for employee learners to access KET materials. Since its launch for employees, Steier says residents in its facilities have also expressed interest in the courses —

“KET has helped us accelerate our Learning Pillar,” Steier said. “We saw KET as the perfect partner — and it wasn’t just because I had Kentucky roots. There is a great respect for KET because it’s a blended learning model. KET has a lot of ways to deliver learning to people.”

IN WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT DEVELOP YOUR WORKFORCE Companies in Kentucky and the nation know the benefits an educated workforce have on the bottom line, to the state economy, and to the betterment of individual employees. A cost-effective partner in workforce development, KET provides proven, effective learning materials that help companies and individuals achieve their goals. Business leaders interested in offering Fast Forward to their employees can contact Tonya Crum, KET Director of Adult Education and Workforce Development, at tcrum@ket.org or (859) 258-7009.

Where will fate, passion, ambition, and duty lead television’s most beloved characters? Millions of devoted viewers soon will find out in the sixth season of Masterpiece Classic “Downton Abbey,” airing in nine episodes beginning Jan. 3. “Downton Abbey” opened with a crisis sparked by the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. Since then, the family has weathered the demise of a string of heirs, the horrors of World War I, the Spanish flu, false convictions, and romantic betrayals — not to mention the compromising death of a Turkish diplomat in the throes of passion. Now, it’s primed for new surprises in Season 6. It opens in 1925 with a series of crises reflecting the momentous changes that are transforming society. Women’s rights have given Lady Mary and Lady Edith new positions of responsibility: Mary runs the estate and Edith manages the magazine she inherited from Michael Gregson. Meanwhile, Tom Branson has left for Boston, and newlyweds Lady Rose and Atticus Aldridge are trying their luck in Jazz Age New York. Anna Bates faces a murder charge, though many still suspect her husband. And for the rest of the servants, big doubts hang over their jobs. Will great houses and the fortunes that support them soon be gone?

Abbey SEASON 6

A new series to love NEW SERIES ‘MERCY STREET’ SET IN CIVIL WAR-ERA AMERICA An exciting new series from executive producers Ridley Scott and David W. Zucker — based on real events — premieres in January. Mercy Street, produced in and around Richmond, Va., takes you beyond the battlefield and into the lives of Americans on the Civil War homefront. It follows volunteer nurses on opposite sides of the conflict: Mary Phinney, a staunch New England abolitionist, and Emma Green, a naïve young Confederate belle. The intersection of North and South within the confines of a small occupied town creates a rich world that is chaotic, conflicted, corrupt, dynamic, and even hopeful. This series is not about battles and glory, but the drama and unexpected humor of everyday life behind the front lines. It’s a fresh twist on an iconic story, one that resonates with larger themes we still struggle with today.

HISTORY

1964: The Fight for a Right KET Monday, Jan. 18 • 10/9 pm In 1964 in Mississippi, people died in an effort to force the state to allow African Americans to exercise their constitutional right to vote. Although the 50th anniversary of Freedom Summer has passed, the struggle for voting rights still goes on. With historical footage and interviews with Freedom Summer architects and volunteers, as well as present day activists, this documentary uses Mississippi to explain American voting issues in the last 150 years.

The Genius of Marie Curie KET Monday, Jan. 25 • 10/9 pm The first woman to be awarded a Nobel prize, Curie was an extraordinary woman whose story is as remarkable in the modern day as it was last century. In her lifetime, she became a rare thing: a celebrity scientist. But how did she achieve such great things in a time when a woman’s place was in the home, not the laboratory, and raise a family at the same time?

The Mine Wars: American Experience KET Tuesday, Jan. 26 • 9/8 pm KET2 Sunday Jan. 31 • 9/8 pm At the dawn of the 20th century, coal was the fuel that powered the nation. Yet few Americans thought much about the men who blasted the black rock from underground and hauled it to the surface. Learn the overlooked story of the miners in the mountains of southern West Virginia — native mountaineers, African-American migrants, and European immigrants — who came together in a protracted struggle for their rights.

River Voices: A Portrait of an American River KET Monday, Jan. 4 • 10/9 pm KET KY Wednesday, Jan. 6 • 9/8 pm In 1937, the Ohio River flood struck communities all along the river. At Portsmouth, Ohio, it reached an astounding 74.23 feet, and more than 32,000 people were displaced from their homes. The flood left behind unimaginable devastation but the community summoned its strength and responded with a massive cleanup effort that still resonates with people today.

Civil War: The Untold Story KET2 Begins Thursday, Jan. 21 • 9/8 pm At the outset of the South’s secession from the United States, the Union realized that ending the rebellion rested on controlling the area between the Appalachians and the Mississippi River. Examine the Civil War through the lens of the Western Campaign, which dramatically shaped its final outcome. Learn new insights into the causes of the war, the homefront, slavery, and the relatively unheralded role African Americans played in the conflict.

Bonnie & Clyde: American Experience KET Tuesday, Jan. 19 • 9/8 pm KET2 Sunday, Jan. 24 • 9/8 pm Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow had been on a year-long crime spree, leaving a trail of dead bodies in their wake, yet were little more than a local curiosity until photos of the couple were discovered at a hastily abandoned hideout in 1933. Overnight, the country became transfixed by scandalous images and press accounts of their improbable escapes and illicit romance. Learn their true story through interviews with cultural historians and descendants of the outlaws and those who captured them.

SHORT TAKES Today’s KET: A trusted partner in lifelong learning The possibilities that each New Year brings align with one our most steadfast beliefs: that learning never ends. For those who never earned a high school diploma, our innovative Fast Forward online GED test-preparation system can be utilized by independent learners or in connection with Kentucky Adult Education’s network of learning centers. Plus, as we see in our Making A Difference story on page 2 this month, Fast Forward is also an efficient, effective, and engaging workforce development tool for businesses, their employees, and our economy. Kentucky’s educators know well the importance of continuing education, and that’s why so many rely on KET. From early childcare providers to K-12 classroom teachers to adult-education instructors, all of these educators have access to high-quality professional development produced by KET. Provided through video and online instruction, these resources are one of the most efficient means for educators throughout the state for training and professional development. And of course the programs we air every day allow anyone – regardless of age, educational level, location, or background – to expand their horizons in any number of ways. Whether it’s a how-to program or an educational PBS KIDS series, a thought-provoking documentary or historical drama, the programs from KET and PBS deliver endless opportunities to learn more, understand more, and be more. Here’s to wishing you a year full of limitless possibilities.

‘Fast Forward’ chosen as curriculum partner by GED Testing Service KET’s Fast Forward online instructional system for GED test preparation has been chosen for inclusion in the new GEDWorks™ program, launched recently by GED Testing Service®. The program brings together some of the nation’s largest employers and recognizable brands — including KFC, Taco Bell, Southeastern Grocers, and Walmart — to provide no-cost comprehensive GED® test-preparation services to employees who wish to earn their GED credential. “Having a strong curriculum provider like KET is vital to driving student success in the GEDWorks program,” said Randy Trask, GED Testing Service president. “Our students like the ease of use of KET’s Fast Forward system, and it provides our GED Advisors with the tools they need to effectively serve each student.”

KET School Video Project asks students to look to the future In keeping with KET’s American Graduate Initiative, this year’s School Video Project challenge is “Shaping My Future: College and Career.” KET is asking students to produce videos about career or education planning, on topics such as staying in school, strategies for success, achieving goals, and more. Each year, KET asks students throughout the state to create videos related to a single topic. These student videos are submitted to KET, vetted, and then posted on the School Video Project website. Among the videos submitted so far are “Close the Deal: Wayne County College and Career Day,” produced by students at Wayne County High School, and “Shaping My Future as a Lifelong Learner,” produced by Florence Elementary students in Boone County. You can view these and other student videos at svp.KET.org.
