MAKING A DIFFERENCE THE ART OF UNDERSTANDING
Art therapist Chenoweth Allen gives students a window to themselves
American Graduate Champions commit their time, skills, and resources to ensure young people succeed, playing active roles in improving educational outcomes for students — and creating positive environments daily for youth in their communities. As part of the American Graduate initiative, KET is recognizing Kentuckians who are champions of education in our communities. This month we salute Chenoweth Allen, who works to ensure the educational success of individuals in a variety of important settings.

COVER STORY
wild WORLD IT’S A
Learn the story of our interactions with Earth’s wild creatures
F
rom the Great Barrier Reef, to the wilds of Minnesota and all across the world, our lives are more and more intertwined with the creatures who share our planet. A trio of programs this month examines these interactions from a variety of perspectives and from a variety of places.
Operation Wild KET Begins Wednesday, July 1 • 8/7 pm KET2 Begins Saturday, July 4 • 6/5 pm In an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at how pioneering human medicine can also transform ways to treat ailing wildlife, this new series follows teams to China, South Africa, and Laos. Stories include a gorilla called Shufai, still trying to recover from being shot in the arm by poachers when he was just a baby. You’ll also see how scientists are using high-tech medicine to try and save the giant panda species, and a groundbreaking skin-graft operation on a rhino after poachers stole her horns. And at Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago, see how human heart technology is being used to help chimpanzees prevent heart disease. And much, much more!

DISCOVER more Turn to pages 20 and 21 for even more science programming this month, including The Bomb, a look at how America developed the most destructive invention in human history: the nuclear bomb, and First Peoples, a look at our ancestry around the globe.
Life on the Reef KET Begins Wednesday, July 22 • 8/7 pm KET2 Begins Saturday, July 25 • 6/5 pm The Great Barrier Reef is one of the richest and most complex natural ecosystems on earth — home to a stunning array of animals, from microscopic plankton to 100-ton whales. From the coral cays of the outer reef to the Islands of the Torres Strait, the reef’s human residents work to find that critical balance between our needs and those of an ever-diminishing natural world. The three-part Life on the Reef presents a unique and fresh angle on Australia’s greatest natural icon, seen through the eyes of those who live, work, and play in this natural wonderland. Set against a backdrop of extraordinary marine habitats, each episode takes you above and beneath the waters to see how nature adapts to the changing seasons throughout the year.
Lily: A Bear’s Life KET2 Sunday, July 5 • 8/7 pm KET Tuesday, July 7 • 9/8 pm Lily has been followed from birth by researchers in Minnesota, her life captured on film and shared online around the world. But her fame has come at a price. She has become the focus of a passionate debate, and while she has many thousands of fans, some people want her dead. Why? Lily was born to a research bear and she in turn, gave birth to her own cub. A camera was placed in her den and live pictures are shown online. But a year later, the cub was shot by a hunter—and Lily’s fans vented their fury online. The hunting community responded by creating a rival web page defending their right to hunt bears. A war has begun.

EXPLORE KENTUCKY KET contributes to improvements in student performance KET’s extensive contributions to PBS LearningMedia over a wide spectrum of subject matter are helping to improve student performance in schools across the nation. A new study reveals the potential impact on student performance when the resources available through PBS LearningMedia were integrated into existing curriculum. It showed that student performance on content assessments increased by 8 percentage points; that, on average, students outperformed national assessment norms by 10 percentage points; that students also outperformed state assessment norms, by an average of 11 percentage points; and that more than half (56 percent) of students also showed an increase in the frequency with which they engaged in critical thinking practices. KET has produced thousands of classroom resources for PBS LearningMedia, including early childhood videos and interactive games; math, science, arts, social studies, and world language resources for grades K-12; and resources created especially for adult learners preparing for the GED® test. For example, as part of the Math at the Core: Middle School collection, KET recently produced 50 animations, games, and self-paced lessons designed to deepen students’ conceptual understanding of mathematics

while improving their precision and accuracy. “Education is at the heart of KET’s mission,” said Shae Hopkins, KET’s executive director. “KET resources and videos in PBS Learning Media are free and easily accessible. We’re committed to providing innovative classroom tools and knowledge that help educators and students succeed.” More than 80,000 teachers, parents, and students in Kentucky have PBS Learning Media accounts and have accessed 850,000 digital learning resources since 2013. To help educators use the resources effectively, most are accompanied by support materials such as background essays, discussion questions, lesson plans, and handouts.

New program examines colon cancer Look at late-stage diagnosis and other issues in the new program Catching a Killer: Colon Cancer in the Bluegrass, premiering Tuesday, July 7 at 9/8 pm on the Kentucky Channel. A follow-up to 2011’s Colon Cancer Among Us, this new program expands the focus of the first, examining the incidence of late colon cancer diagnosis, particularly in the areas of Eastern Kentucky and Western Louisville. It also examines the cultural
reasons why early screenings are not prevalent and how the situation can be remedied. Through candid interviews and on location footage, it sheds an unflinching light on the Commonwealth’s preventable cancer problem. Catching a Killer: Colon Cancer in the Bluegrass also airs Thursday, July 9 at 7:30/6:30 pm and at other times throughout the month on the Kentucky Channel.

SHORT TAKES Today’s KET: Making an Impact This month we celebrate two important education stories. First there is the exciting news of the PBS LearningMedia Impact Study (see page 18). As a leader in digital learning, KET is a major contributing station to this innovative online educational resource, producing a wide range of engaging instructional content for it. We are proud and pleased to see the positive impact this content is having on learning and classroom achievement. We’re also pleased to recognize Kentuckians who are working hard every day to improve the lives of our youngest citizens and help ensure their future success in the classroom and beyond. We call these dedicated individuals American Graduate Champions. This month, we’re recognizing our first American Graduate Champion, Chenoweth Allen of Louisville. Her work to use art as both a refuge for at-risk youth and a catalyst for instilling pride and healthy self-esteem epitomizes what it means to be a champion. If you know someone who is a good candidate to be an American Graduate Champion, we encourage you to make a nomination today. Simply go online at amgrad.KET.org/champions. Sincerely, Shae Hopkins KET Executive Director and CEO
