ore than 70 years ago and half a world away, the unthinkable happened: because of their faith, an entire people were slated for extermination in Hitler’s Germany. Six million Jews, along with others Hitler deemed undesirable, lost their lives in what we now know as the Holocaust. Remembering these atrocities — and ensuring they will never happen again — is the aim of one of the classes offered during a three-week camp for verbally and mathematically precocious youth (known as VAMPY) held each summer on the campus of Western Kentucky University. Taught by educator Ron Skillern, the middle- and high-school students study Nazi Germany and the Holocaust, culminating in the creation of a mural that communicates an aspect of the tragedy the students found important. “It’s really just magic,” said Skillern, who was named Kentucky’s Teacher of the Year in 2017. “Any student that is going to sign up for a three-week class likes to learn. I refer to it as a utopia for teachers. There’s nothing that’s off limits in our classes. There’s a lot of reading on their own, a lot of research and the classes.” That environment, Skillern said, allows discussions to move unimpeded — no bells, no pep rallies or
other distractions found in regular high-school classrooms. But the intensity of the subject matter, he found, needed a hands-on outlet for the students to process what they were discovering, so the idea of the murals was born. “The murals are a great opportunity to show how you can utilize art to send a powerful message,” Skillern said. Students spend more than a week studying and formulating just what that message is. Often, it incorporates messages of social justice relevant today, such as the civil rights movement and Black Lives Matter. Last year, KET visited Skillern’s class at WKU and documented those students’ experiences, which included a trip to the Holocaust Museum in Washington and the creation of their mural. The resulting program, Murals of the Holocaust, features student reflections on what they’ve learned, the mural creation process and talks by Holocaust survivors and family members. “The kids wanted a [program] that would tell the story of not only their class but the classes that came before them.” The KET documentary revisits the art created in years past, now mounted and displayed in custom cases. The exhibit has traveled to Louisville’s Jewish
Community Center, the Corvette Museum and the Kentucky Center for the Arts, and, Skillern says, the attention Murals of the Holocaust has drawn to the project has ensured bookings of the mural displays at schools and other locations all across the state. Utilizing the documentary footage, KET is preparing materials for Kentucky teachers to use in lessons on the Holocaust and Nazi Germany. With these resources, which are available to all teachers via PBS LearningMedia, students can hear the firsthand experiences of Fred Gross of Louisville, who survived World War II by fleeing Belgium for France, as well as Jeffrey Jamner, the child of Holocaust survivors. The materials provide teachers guidance on how to navigate the sensitive topic and how to approach it. “As a teacher, I was aware of the good work that KET does, but in working with KET on this project, that respect has been multiplied several times over,” Skillern said. “The creation of the project was such a pleasurable experience between crew and students. Their being there elevated what the kids wanted to do in terms of their performance in the class and the mural that they produced. They wanted to do a mural that would be outstanding for future viewers.”
“As a teacher, I was aware of the good work that KET does, but in working with KET on this project, that respect has been multiplied several times over.”
Murals of the Holocaust airs this month on Monday, June 18 at 8/7 pm on KET.
One thing that makes me particularly proud of KET is our ability to capture important stories like that of Mr. Skillern and his students and to share those stories with all of the Commonwealth. As Kentucky’s only statewide broadcast network, KET is uniquely positioned to bring you and your family stories that showcase the beauty of the state, that preserve our history and heritage, and that make us all proud to call this place home. From the shorter stories we share every week on Kentucky Life to longer documentaries – such as Murals of the Holocaust, Kentucky’s Secret Gardens, The Hilltoppers, military veterans’ recollections and more – the subject matter is as diverse as the people and places of Kentucky. As we look ahead to our next 50 years, we can count on the fact there will never be a shortage of fascinating people to document and compelling stories to share with our viewers.
Sincerely,
Shae Hopkins
KET Executive Director and CEO

ooking for new mysteries to lose yourself in this summer? One of Agatha Christies most famous works, And Then There Were None, gets new life from a star-studded cast, while Morse and Thursday return for a fifth season on Endeavour on Masterpiece Mystery! Set in 1968, the new season of Endeavour begins with Morse having finally passed his Sergeant’s exams just as Oxford City Police merges into Thames Valley Constabulary, creating uncertainty for everyone. And despite Joan Thursday’s return to Oxford, there are still many unanswered questions about her previous year’s disappearance and Endeavour’s unexpected proposal of marriage. Also returning are Anton Lesser as Chief Superintendent Reginald Bright, Dakota Blue Richards as WPC Shirley Trewlove, Sean Rigby as Sergeant Jim
Strange and James Bradshaw as Dr. Max DeBryn. The series sees the arrival of new recruit Detective Constable George Fancy, whom Morse is reluctantly tasked with mentoring. And with Agatha Christie’s masterwork, go further back in time to enjoy a dramatization of one of the greatest crime novels ever written. It’s been called a “pitch-black, brilliantly told meditation on guilt” by Christie biographer Laura Thompson. This thrilling, three-part series features the talents of Poldark’s handsome hero, Aidan Turner; the versatile Sam Neill, who starred in Jurassic Park, Peaky Blinders and much more; Charles Dance, who was thrilling as Game of Thrones’ Tywin Lannister; and Miranda Richardson, who starred in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, The Hours and Enchanted April. Set in 1939 as Europe teeters on the brink of war, the story follows 10 strangers with dubious pasts who are lured to Soldier Island, an isolated rock near the Devon coast in southern England. Cut off from the mainland, with their hosts mysteriously absent, they are each accused of a terrible crime. As each member of the party starts to die one by one, the survivors realize that one of them is a killer and start to turn on each other.

When Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton met on the set of Cleopatra, the attraction was immediate. Beyond the alcohol, pills and the trappings of fame, was love the ultimate crutch that allowed them to escape the realities of their extraordinary lives?

Great Performances at the Met: Tosca KET Friday, June 15 9/8 pm KET2 Saturday, June 16 • 1:30 am/12:30 am •
Puccini’s melodrama about a volatile diva, a sadistic police chief, and an idealistic artist has offended and thrilled audiences for more than a century. Critics, for their part, have often had problems with Tosca’s rather grungy subject matter, the directness and intensity of its score, and the crowd-pleasing dramatic opportunities it provides for its lead roles. But these same aspects have also made Tosca one of a handful of iconic works that seem to represent opera in the public imagination. Sir David McVicar’s new production stars Sonya Yoncheva, Vittorio Grigolo and Željko Lučić.

Voice of the Epilepsies KET Monday, June 25 • 9/8 pm Savannah’s parents were told that she wouldn’t live through her 20s. Learn the heartwarming story about a stay-at-home mom who becomes an epilepsy researcher, determined to save her daughter’s life. Join Jim Abrahams, Susan Axelrod and health experts Eric Kossoff and Jerome Engel for this intimate portrayal of braving through one of the more catastrophic forms of the epilepsies. As a person living with epilepsy, filmmaker Tiffany Webb focuses on the condition that takes almost 50,000 lives every year in the U.S. and affects 65 million people worldwide.

‘Inside Opioid Addiction’ lauded by Mental Health America KET’s Inside Opioid Addiction has been recognized among an impressive group of individuals, communications professionals and innovative programs by Mental Health America. The documentary was the recipient of one of MHA’s Media Awards, which noted that the ongoing, multi-faceted program works to eliminate stigma and “strengthen understanding, and facilitate a recovery-focused revolution in opioid addiction.” Slated to be presented June 15 in Washington, MHA’s Media Awards recognize journalists, authors, digital platforms, media outlets, television shows and filmmakers that have not shied away from the issues of mental illness and addiction — and in doing so, have educated, informed and helped break down stigma and shame around these issues.
