New documentary gives voice to Kentucky Women
Marie Caldwell Humphries
Dr. Grace James
Diane Sawyer
When thousands of schoolchildren visit Frankfort each year, they marvel at the magnificent statues and busts that permeate Kentucky’s state capitol building. All of the images are of men. The Kentucky Commission on Women began an exhibit project 37 years ago designed to call attention to women who have made significant contributions to Kentucky’s literary, scientific, religious, military, political, and entertainment landscape. This exhibit was the impetus for Dreamers & Doers: VOICES of Kentucky Women, a new documentary that tells the compelling stories of 47 influential women in Kentucky’s history. The program is framed by remarks by former Gov. Martha Layne Collins. Some of the women profiled and their achievements are familiar, but many are of women whose 4

accomplishments long deserved wider recognition but have remained largely unknown. This unprecedented collection of stories is told against the backdrops of the quest for women’s rights, gripping accounts of social justice activism, and groundbreaking firsts in Kentucky and American history. Kentucky actors and actresses bring to life quotes from the women. With historical film footage, narration, and expert commentary by contemporaries who are voices in their own right, Dreamers & Doers: VOICES of Kentucky Women can serve as a valuable tool for educators and to inspire Kentuckians to dig deeper into the contributions of women to our rich heritage. Pictured on Visions cover: aviator Willa Beatrice Brown, the first black woman issued a license to fly in the United States

EXPLORE KENTUCKY Sleep in a wigwam and more in Commonwealth Curiosities With the advent of the age of the automobile and the family car vacation, came the rise of the roadside attraction. Discover the vestiges of a bygone era in Commonwealth Curiosities: An Ode to Kentucky’s Unique Attractions, airing Sunday, June 7 at 1 pm/ noon and 7/6 pm on the Kentucky Channel. In this Commonwealth road trip, roadside attractions, unknown gems, and places known only by those who have stumbled upon them are featured. With the rise of interstate highways, many of these now are experienced only by those willing to venture on the roads less traveled — these once-treasured places are becoming nearly extinct. But you can still take a trip, stopping at such places as the Wigwam Village in Cave City, one of several “Sleep in a Wigwam” motels that once populated the American South and Southwest; the Kentucky Reptile Zoo in Slade; the Bible Mini Golf in Lexington; Akemon Barber and Music in Paris, which mixes harmony and haircuts; and the Woodridge Monuments in Mayfield, the “strange procession that never moves.” Commonwealth Curiosities also airs Sunday, June 28 at 10/9 pm on KET2. Learn about Kentucky industry in new program Do you know how many major manufacturers have operations in Kentucky? Toyota, Corvette, Ford, Corning, North American Stainless, and Century Aluminum, to name just a few. Find out more about the state’s manufacturing base in Made in Kentucky, airing Sunday, June 14 at 1 pm/noon and 7/6 pm on the Kentucky Channel. Because of its industrial base, Kentucky has one of the most energyintensive economies in the United States — an economy that has largely been sustained by the use of coal-fired electricity generation. As concerns about climate change increase and the demand for coal is replaced by a demand for natural
Louisville Life
gas, Kentucky faces new difficulties. The program explores some of the solutions that may lead to a stronger economy, while still protecting the environment. The program features interviews with representatives of companies, industry groups, and government organizations, including the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, the Kentucky Coal Association, the Tennessee Valley Authority, the Kentucky Resources Council, the National Center for Manufacturing Sciences, LG&E, KU, and more. Made in Kentucky also airs Wednesday, June 17 at 8/7 pm and other times throughout the month on the Kentucky Channel.

Omaha Beach: Honor and Sacrifice KET Monday, June 1 • 10/9 pm
On D-Day, a roughly 7,000-yard stretch of beach in Normandy, France, given the code name “Omaha”, proved to be the Allies’ biggest obstacle to the success of World War II’s Operation Overlord. Taking Omaha was given to two American divisions: the already battlehardened 1st Infantry Division, “The Big Red One,” and the untested 29th Infantry Division, who had yet to see any combat.
The Ghost Army KET Wednesday, June 3 • 10/9 pm KET2 Sunday, June 7 • 6/5 pm War, deception, and art come together in this astonishing true story of American G.I.s who tricked the enemy with rubber tanks, sound effects, and carefully crafted illusions during WWII. The tale of this remarkably effective tactic is told through the stories of the veterans, many of whom — like Bill Blass and Ellsworth Kelly — would go on to have illustrious careers in art, design, and fashion.
Tales from the Royal Wardrobe KET Sunday, June 21 • 8/7 pm KET2 Tuesday, June 23 • 8/7 pm Examine the significance of the royal wardrobes of English monarchs over the last 400 years, learning why most kings and queens have carefully choreographed every aspect of their apparel and why, for those who haven’t, the consequences have sometimes been calamitous.

Mount Rushmore: American Experience KET2 Sunday, June 21 • 8/7 pm KET Tuesday, June 23 • 9/8 pm High on a granite cliff in South Dakota’s Black Hills tower the huge carved faces of four American presidents. Together they constitute the world’s largest sculpture. The massive tableau inspires awe and bemusement. How was it carved? Who possessed the audacity to create such a gargantuan work? Turns out, the story of Mount Rushmore’s creation is as bizarre and wonderful as the monument itself.
1913: Seeds of Conflict KET Monday, June 29 • 10/9 pm Breaking new ground and laying bare old myths, this program explores the little-known history of Palestine during the latter part of the Ottoman Empire, a time of relative harmony between Arabs and Jews. Living side by side in the multi-lingual, cosmopolitan city of Jerusalem, Jews, Christians, and Muslims intermingled with a cultural fluidity enjoyed by all. How did this land of milk and honey, so diverse and rich in culture, become the site of today’s bitter and seemingly intractable struggle?

SHORT TAKES Today’s KET: A partner in the modern classroom We’re so proud that four of the 100 national PBS Digital Innovators recently named are Kentucky educators — including James Allen, Jennifer Montgomery, Kate Wintuska, and Susan Cintra, featured in this month’s Visions. These dedicated teachers epitomize what it means to direct a modern classroom, where technology does not simply replace pencil and paper but rather enhances and advances the learning experience in new and exciting ways. It is this promise of digital learning that drives KET to be a leader in developing innovative instructional resources that go far beyond the television screen. PBS LearningMedia — an online educational repository offered as part of KET EnycloMedia — features nearly 2,000 KET-produced content items that are all easily available with just the click of a button. Many of these resources were developed as part of KET’s ongoing national partnership with WGBH/Boston. KET has also been part of the solution for the Kentucky Department of Education’s need to provide professional development mandated for all school personnel in the state, which KET created and made efficiently available online. Our online physics classes feature an award-winning virtual lab, allowing experiments to be conducted that students would never have the opportunity to do otherwise. And Fast Forward, our newest GED test-prep system is completely computer-based, which provides students the ability to customize their studies based on skill level and learning style. We’re excited by the possibilities such innovations hold for student learning, and we thank all the educators who embrace these tools and make them a part of the modern classroom experience. Sincerely, Shae Hopkins KET Executive Director and CEO 22
