As baby Lylianna sleeps, mom Kaitlyn Beghtol curls up on the couch with her dog and her computer. It is quiet and dark in the small apartment, the perfect setting for good dreams. But Kaitlyn is not sleeping. She is making her dream of college a reality. First she must complete her high school equivalency, a process now easier thanks to an online program called Fast Forward. As the name implies, Fast Forward is designed to help learners earn their credential at their pace. Fast Forward covers all the subjects, critical thinking skills, and online tools needed to do well on any of the high school equivalency exams. Learners have the added benefit of practicing using the technology they will use on the test. “I like Fast Forward a lot,” Kaitlyn says. “It explains things to me that I didn’t understand before, like multiplying and dividing fractions, I never got that in school. The way the teachers taught it on the video just clicked in my head.”

6

KETCollegeandCareer.org 800.354.9067

Fast Forward also solves perennial issues such as transportation and childcare since learners can use it anywhere and any time. Kaitlyn enrolled through a local learning center but studied mostly on her own. “I hadn’t had anyone pass the math test without coming into the center and going through our program,” says adult educator Pat McKinley. “Kaitlyn told me she thought she had it after doing the Fast Forward math section. She passed the math test on the first try. She passed all the subjects on the first try, even earning an honors score on social studies. I was amazed.” “When she gets older, I will tell Lylianna about this,” Kaitlyn says. “If your mom can do this, you can do whatever it is, too. I will tell her she should find a way to just keep on going.”

Jane Austen “I do not want people to be agreeable, as it saves me the trouble of liking them.” Nineteenth century English novelist Jane Austen, best known for works like Pride and Prejudice, Emma, and Sense and Sensibility, is one of the most widely read authors of all time. She often wrote about the romantic lives of wealthy English socialites. Austen was not educated formally past the age of 11 or 12. The rest of her education came from books she read at home or at the libraries of family and friends.

Mark Twain “Don’t go around saying the world owes you a living. The world owes you nothing. It was here first.” Samuel Clemens, better known by his pen name, Mark Twain, was an American author who wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, among other works. His books include vibrant depictions of life along the Mississippi River and social and political commentary. Twain’s official schooling ended after the fifth grade. He then worked as a printer’s apprentice for a local newspaper.

Louis L’Amour “Victory is won not in miles but in inches. Win a little now, hold your ground, and later, win a little more.” Louis L’Amour was an American author of more than 100 works of popular fiction. His novels and short stories primarily fall in the Western genre. At the age of 15, L’Amour was removed from school by his parents and spent the next several years working various manual labor jobs across the American West. He published his first novel at the age of 43.

David (“Dav”) Pilkey “Most kids are smarter than most grown-ups. Kids see the world in black and white... They look through all the garbage and see a world run by fools and dullards and lazy people. And there’s nothing they can do about it because they have no power.” Dav Pilkey is the American author and illustrator best known for the Photo credit: Karyn Carpenter Captain Underpants series of children’s books. Pilkey was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia in elementary school. He struggled to learn in school, and his teachers often sent him to sit in the hallway by himself as punishment for bad behavior. Now, he writes books in easy-to-read cartoon formats and encourages kids who have difficulty in school not to give up hope.

Octavia Butler

“I think climbing mountains or buildings or whatever has been a really good metaphor for finishing my work. Because no matter how tired you get, no matter how you feel like you can’t possibly do this, somehow you do.” American science fiction writer Octavia Butler was a very successful African-American woman author in a genre dominated by white men. She grew up as a shy child in a difficult neighborhood and was later diagnosed with dyslexia. She became a fan of writing and reading science fiction during her pre-teen years. Butler was the first science fiction writer to receive the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship.

Physics KET’s Honors Physics prepares students for careers in science, medicine, engineering, and related fields through a mixture of video lessons, lab activities, and homework. Most phenomena are illustrated by animation or video, and problem solving is integrated into instruction and lab activities for a contextualized learning experience. The teacher provides help with labs and homework via email and Skype—usually one-on-one. The KET Virtual Physics Lab for high school and college faculty includes 21 pieces of virtual apparatus plus an integrated graphing program. This approach is great for introductory exploration, concept development, and application activities. Because the labs are always available, teachers can do authentic “that’s a great question; let’s go into the lab” investigations. And teachers can use them as pre-lab introductions, assign them for independent study outside class, or embed them within homework.

Latin 1, Latin 2, Latin 3, Latin Literature, and AP Latin Caesar Latin students learn one of the world’s foundational languages, which supports a better understanding of English and other world languages, plus improves performance on standardized tests. This multimedia approach to learning includes extensive online activities, virtual visits to ancient sites, video lessons, readings and translations, culture and history lessons, and direct interaction with KET’s teachers and tutors via phone, email, and Skype.

German 1, German 2, and German 3 Learn the language of commerce, classical music, and rich German culture. Students choose their paths of study as they learn to listen, speak, read, and write German. KET’s German program allows students to collaborate with fellow learners and speak with tutors one-on-one to practice the language via phone and Skype.
