Technology. Learning. Customer Care. 50 years of educational innovation at KET It is the early 1960s. The race to the moon is on, and technology is making the impossible suddenly possible. Education is more important than ever as a generation of baby boomers grows up in an increasingly sophisticated, global world. In Kentucky, O. Leonard Press has an idea. He wants to use some of that new technology to bring educational programs directly into school classrooms. On September 23, 1968, Kentucky Educational Television signs on the air, broadcasting during school hours on the second largest, landbased network in the world via a statewide, 15-transmitter network. It is an unprecedented blend of technology and learning, directly benefitting students and teachers alike. Now, five decades and countless innovations later, KET is celebrating its 50th birthday, a milestone, a natural time to look back yet think forward. At KET, the adage is true that the more things change, the more they remain the same. Technology keeps changing and changing (and changing), but our mission remains the same— provide

TOP ADULT EDUCATOR TRUSTS KET’S TLC 2018 marks KET’s 50th year of broadcasting. That’s 50 years of being committed to the mission of leveling the educational playing field by providing access to quality programming for audiences of all ages. For decades, KET has taken its role in improving lives through education very seriously.

Ron Griffin, Enterprise Director for KET, congratulates COABE Teacher of the Year, Holly Heintz—a longtime supporter of KET educational products.

14

KET.org/AdultEd 800.354.9067

“Fifty years ago, KET signed on the air with the goal of improving lives through education by using new technology,” said Tonya Crum, Senior Director of Education. “Reaching adults who need a high school credential has long been one of our objectives. With the advancement of new technologies, KET has adapted its delivery of educational resources from broadcast and printed workbooks to today’s online, mobile delivery systems. We have changed the way we do things but remain committed to our founder’s idea of using technology to bring educational opportunities to those who need them.” Along the way, KET has gained loyal followers among students and teachers who utilize its products and services to prepare for high school equivalency credentials, workplace education or life skills improvement. One such loyal follower was recently named the COABE (Coalition of Adult Basic Education) Teacher of the Year. Holly Heintz, an adult education instructor at Tomlinson

Adult Learning Center in Pinellas County, Florida, has been an adult educator for nearly 14 years. “I started out in Lakewood Community Center and was later promoted to another Pinellas County adult school, Dixie Hollins, where I worked at one of their satellite centers at the Pinellas County Jail for ten and a half years,” Heintz said as she detailed her adult ed career. “While I was at the jail, I found a book that was typewritten, copied and comb-bound. It was a math book and I thought it was to-the-point and a good resource. When I researched where it came from, it was produced by KET.” Heintz was working nights part-time at another center, Tomlinson Adult Learning Center, where she met Ronnie Neisen who had purchased VHS tapes from KET in 1996 for one of her satellite programs, Career Options. When Career Options restructured, Neisen brought the tapes to Tomlinson, but Tomlinson did not have a VCR, so the tapes were in boxes not being used. “I asked her about them.

She said they were good but she couldn’t use them so I could have them. I split the boxes of tapes with Jennifer Harrington and I started using my share at my day job at the jail. I loved them but they were old when I got them. Sometimes, I would get concerned the tapes and VHS were getting hot and there might be a risk of the tape getting snarled in the player so I’d turn it off and let things cool off so as to preserve them as long as possible,” Holly shared. She and the other teacher laugh now as they were both giving their tapes breaks so they would not get destroyed from overuse! When Heintz’s program allowed her grant money in the budget, she ordered DVDs and workbooks to replace the old VHS tapes. “I couldn’t believe it when they came. All the content I needed was in one box as opposed to several boxes of the big VHS tapes!” In 2014, the GED test changed significantly. As a result, KET released FastForward, a mobile friendly, online learning system that helps learners prepare for high school credentialing exams. Holly, by now a full-time instructor at the Tomlinson Career Center, was curious about the new content and platform. “I wrote a small

grant through one of Achieva Credit Union’s educational grants, and I was able to purchase 10 reusable seats in FastForward to see how it worked with my students. I thought it was a good program and my students did very well with it. There are lots of features that enable students to stay focused,” she said. Heintz introduced other teachers and personnel in the Pinellas County school system to FastForward and now many Pinellas County adult ed students join thousands of other adult learners who are accomplishing their goals of gaining high school equivalency credentials through the FastForward study system. As KET celebrates 50 years, it pauses to say “thank you” to all adult educators who partner with KET to make a difference in the lives of adults who want to gain knowledge or credentials to improve or reach a personal goal. “We especially appreciate those adult educators who have utilized our resources through decades of work. We are glad to know we make a difference for educators and students alike,” concluded Crum. For more information about FastForward and other KET Adult Education products, visit KET.org/AdultEd.

Fifty years ago, KET signed on the air with the goal of improving lives through education. With the advancement of new technologies, we have adapted our delivery of educational resources from broadcast and printed workbooks to today’s online, mobile delivery systems. We have changed the way we do things but remain committed to our founder’s idea of using technology to bring educational opportunities to those who need them. — TONYA CRUM, SENIOR DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION
