Dropping Back In is a series of powerful half-hour documentaries showcasing people who have rebuilt their lives by earning a high school equivalency. Check with your PBS station for schedules or watch programs and interviews at droppingbackin.org. • Second Chances explores the reasons so many leave school; interviews individuals who have dropped out and experts working tirelessly to solve the problem; and examines the consequences for individuals and society. • More Than a Statistic looks at dropout prevention and recovery programs that target younger dropouts and have a track record of success. • Complicated Lives examines some of the many stumbling blocks dropouts face in their attempts to pursue an education and looks at programs seeking to close achievement gaps. • Working for the Future looks at some of the education and training opportunities that provide skills needed to compete in the workplace of the future. • Building a Better Life looks at successful apprentice and training-based programs that are preparing undereducated and underemployed people for available jobs by teaching marketable skills. The program also explores the difference a constant and caring adult can make.

Coloring Book Downloads A coloring book telling the story of Kellie Blair Hardt, a former dropout and now an award-winning special education teacher featured in the Dropping Back In program “Second Chances,” is available to download and print at droppingbackin.org. The coloring book is aimed at a dual audience—young children, providing them with an inspiring story that encourages them to stay in school and value their education, and their parents, especially those who have dropped out and need the encouragement to obtain their high school credential. The back of the coloring book has space for localized information, or you can use the space to promote KETFastForward.org.

FastForward is part of American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen, a public media initiative supported by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to help local communities across America address the dropout crisis. Learn more at americangraduate.org. americangraduate.org

FIRST TIME WAS A CHARM (WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM FAST FORWARD) When Amanda Isner-Cheek was just 14, her life began to change, and not for the better.

son turned four to spend time with him before he started school.

A native of Knoxville, she moved with her mom to a small Tennessee town where, she says, there wasn’t much to do but cruise around and bemoan the lack of fun.

It turned out to be a bad decision, she said, coming at a bad time in her life.

Changing schools didn’t help either, especially since her new school lacked special programs to help her with her ADD and dyslexia. “I just didn’t want to be there, so I just kind of gave up,” she recently recalled from the Lyon County Adult Learning Center, where she studied for and earned her GED® credential—with the help of KET’s Fast Forward study system. She passed all four parts of the test on the first try.

“My mom passed away, and that was really hard for me, and I didn’t know how to deal with it; she was my best friend. It’s still hard to deal with it now,” Amanda said. “So I turned to drugs and spiraled out of control, got divorced, got in trouble, got incarcerated, lost my son, everything just spiraled from there. I didn’t continued on page 7

UNLOCK ADVANCED SUBJECTS

NOT EVERY HIGH SCHOOL CAN PROVIDE CLASSES IN HIGHER-LEVEL SUBJECTS SUCH AS LATIN, GERMAN, SPANISH, MANDARIN CHINESE, OR THE ARTS. THAT DOESN’T MEAN EVERY STUDENT CAN’T TAKE CLASSES IN THESE ADVANCED SUBJECTS AND MORE. KET’S ONLINE CAMPUS PROVIDES INTERACTIVE LEARNING WITH EXPERIENCED TEACHERS.

ONLINE CAMPUS

ONLINE CAMPUS

ONLINE CAMPUS

Level 9-12

College preparation means a well-rounded curriculum, including arts and humanities, world languages, and higher-level science. With KET’s Online Campus courses, students enjoy the independence of online classes with help from teachers and tutors— great for high school students enrolled in public, private, or homeschool programs. KET’s world language courses are also available for motivated middle school students. Learn more at ket.org/onlinecampus.

LATIN I, II, III, LATIN LITERATURE, AP LATIN All world language courses are based on the ACTFL Standards for Foreign Language Learning.

Latin students learn one of the world’s foundational languages, which supports a better understanding of English and other world languages, plus improves performance on standardized tests. This multimedia approach to learning includes extensive online activities, virtual visits to ancient sites, video lessons, readings and translations, culture and history lessons, and direct interaction with KET’s teachers and tutors via phone, email, and live online classrooms.

GERMAN I, II, III Learn the language of commerce, classical music, and rich German culture. Students choose their paths of study as they learn to listen, speak, read, and write German. KET’s German program allows students to collaborate with fellow learners and speak with tutors one-on-one to practice the language via phone and live online classrooms.

MANDARIN CHINESE 1, II Students listen, speak, read, and write Mandarin Chinese through diverse activities. They practice simple grammatical structures in engaging ways with a variety of learning styles in mind and engage in weekly practice sessions with a conversation coach via live online classrooms. Lessons in culture help students understand the context of the language.

SPANISH I, II Students learn Spanish through common expressions, vocabulary, and grammar rules. They practice speaking, reading, listening, and writing in Spanish and have opportunities for authentic conversation in Spanish. Students also learn cultural traditions, practices, and perspectives of the Spanish-speaking world and practice spoken communication via live online classrooms.

PHYSICS LABS The KET Virtual Physics Labs for high school and college faculty include 21 sets of virtual apparatus plus an integrated graphing program. This approach is great for introductory exploration, concept development, and application activities. Because the labs are always available, teachers can do authentic “that’s a great question; let’s go into the lab” investigations. Teachers can use them as pre-lab introductions, assign them for independent study outside class, or embed them within homework.

ARTS IN CULTURE This multimedia course teaches history and appreciation of visual and performing arts. Assignments and assessments are tied to critical thinking skills, and students blog about their responses to art, music, dance, and drama. This course is available for students in grades 9-12 only, with a variety of credit options, including dual college credit.

Arts and Humanities teacher resources • Humanities through the Arts: a complete curriculum teachers can use to enhance their instruction • Humanities Themes: curriculum resources for teachers of grades 7-10 • Humanities Connections: cross-curricular resources for language arts, social studies, art, and history teachers

UNLOCKING LIVES

THERE ARE MYRIAD TRAPS IN LIFE— POVERTY, DRUGS, ALCOHOL, ABUSE, FEW EMPLOYABLE SKILLS. AMAZINGLY, ONE KEY—EDUCATION— CAN UNLOCK THEM ALL.

14

KETCollegeandCareer.org 800.354.9067

MISTY WAS ENSNARED REPEATEDLY IN HER YOUNG LIFE, BUT HER STORY DOES NOT END THERE. Misty stood at the podium, pride and confidence rising within her. The 23-year-old felt good about herself. After all, she was valedictorian of her GED® class. It wasn’t obvious that these positive emotions were new and unfamiliar to Misty. However, Misty’s lack of self-esteem was a persistent weed that sprang up repeatedly in her life. When asked to take on a new challenge, she always said she was “dumb and couldn’t do it.” “My dad was an alcoholic, and my mom worked a lot,” Misty recalled. “They screamed at each other all the time, and my dad beat my mom. There was always angry tension in the house.” Misty’s education ended when she was 13. Simultaneously, she tired of living in a “broken home.” She escaped into the arms of Herbie, a man of 20. The escape, however, quickly morphed into a trap, a repeat of her childhood—a broken home filled with anger and tension and abuse.

Drugs complicated the situation. “I’ve been an addict for almost 13 years,” Misty said. She moved from marijuana to cocaine to heroin, ultimately injecting heroin into her veins. She abused opioids as well. To support her drug habit, Misty began shoplifting and selling drugs. “I have been in and out of jail since I was 18,” she said. “I’ve served out a 2-year sentence, and I am currently serving out a 5-year sentence.” Ironically, it was at the Fayette County Detention Center where she finally found some stability. With the help of a dedicated teacher, Misty studied for the GED® test, and one by one passed the four subject matter tests. She also completed programs that gave her the skills to get a job, as well as a class in moral reconation, a strategy to increase moral reasoning.

Even so, Misty found herself pregnant. Her son, Dusty, was born with Down’s syndrome. When Dusty was just 11 months old, Misty gave birth to Zoey Leigh-ann.

Her next step is college. Misty wants to become a pathologist or work in forensic science.

With two children (one with special needs) in diapers, Herbie fled. Misty moved between her mother, husband, and boyfriends. She had two more sons— Riley and then Jayden. Ultimately, each of her four children was placed with other families. Some she saw for mere days.

“Remember that everything changes,” Misty said. “Nothing stays the same, including the bad times that we have in life. “We can all change and become something better and make a difference. We have to start with ourselves and love ourselves. We have to work and never give up. Stay strong. Keep on keeping on.”

UNLOCK TRUE CHANGE ADULT EDUCATORS HELP TRANSFORM INDIVIDUAL LIVES; BUT DID YOU KNOW THAT EDUCATORS ALSO CHANGE SOCIETY? • Every learner who earns a high school equivalency saves society an estimated $750,000 over his or her lifetime. • It only costs $11,011 annually to educate a child, but the average annual cost to house a federal prison inmate is $31,978. Right now, 3 in 10 prison inmates did not graduate from high school. What if just 4 in 10 had a high school equivalency credential? Many challenges still await… • 19 million adult Americans do not have a high school diploma. • 2.6 million 16- to 24-year-olds are dropouts. …But there are glimmers of hope • In 2015, 5 in 6 students graduated from high school. • 92% of 18-to 24-year-olds have a high school credential (or equivalent). ADULT EDUCATORS ARE THE KEY TO UNLOCKING TRUE CHANGE. THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO—FOR YOUR LEARNERS, YOUR COMMUNITY, AND SOCIETY. CALL US AT KET IF WE CAN HELP YOU.
