MUSICIAN JAY FLIPPIN SAYS GIVING TO KET STRIKES JUST THE RIGHT NOTE

March 2014

aking music, says Jay Flippin of Morehead, is as natural as breathing. As a child in rural Virginia, Flippin took piano lessons for as long as they were available, but when his teacher moved away, he continued learning on his own, playing piano for three churches, several bands, and more. Now, though “retired,” he notes with a smile, he’s still teaching courses at two universities, playing in several groups, and accompanying choirs from the local high school and his church to the Lexington Singers. “I’m generally playing somewhere,” said the versatile performer, who plays rock ’n’ roll as readily as Rhapsody in Blue. And though the life of this four-decade member of the Lexington Philharmonic is literally filled with the sound of music, he seeks out even more through KET. “What I get out of KET is access to the arts,” said the Emmy Award-winning composer, whose music has been featured on soap operas and documentaries nationally. “Can you imagine how much “WHEN YOU LIVE IN A RURAL AREA, LIKE you’d spend if you bought tickets to all the jazz events and symphonies, WE DO, YOU CAN’T AFFORD TO GO TO NEW operas and ballets, chamber music and YORK CITY TO SEE A BROADWAY SHOW. bluegrass festivals?” he asked. “You’d be out several thousand dollars a year. BUT I CAN TURN ON KET AND I CAN SEE A So making a monetary contribution to KET is a no-brainer.” SYMPHONY, OR A STRING QUARTET. OR I And with KET, Flippin says, these CAN WATCH A BALLET, OR WATCH A PLAY.” performances are as close as his own living room. “When you live in a rural area, like we do, you can’t afford to go to New York City to see a Broadway show, or even to Cincinnati or Louisville, but once or maybe twice a year. “But I can turn on KET and I can see it. I can see a symphony or a string quartet or I can watch a ballet or watch a play,” he said. Though Flippin says he’s fortunate to have been able to make his living in music, he quickly acknowledges the arts are often seen as “extra” and not as important as practical careers. “The reason we live is because of art. Passion, romance and all those things you can’t put in a test tube — that’s what makes life worth living,” notes Flippin, who is the 2006 recipient of the Artists Award from the Kentucky Arts Council. “Art gives us a way of expressing the emotional side of us that you don’t get with engineering and law and medicine and those kinds of things. It’s part of the human dimension. It’s part of all of us. People keep making art. They can’t help it.” And it’s not just performance programs on KET that Flippin values. “Series like Downton Abbey are really well-written and well-acted — and even the music’s pretty good,” he said. “It’s high-quality stuff that you couldn’t get if you had to travel to it. Very few people have the time or the money or the access. But what KET and public broadcasting do is give me access to things I wouldn’t have otherwise.” “And for that, any amount that I contribute is absolutely a bargain.”

EXPLORE KENTUCKY Kentucky filmmakers spotlighted on KET’s ‘Reel Visions’ Check out the work of some creative young Kentuckians as KET presents two new episodes in the series Reel Visions: Spotlight on Kentucky Filmmakers. The first program, premiering Monday, March 24 at 5/4 pm on the Kentucky Channel, features awardwinning animator Nathaniel Winckler’s Charged, which follows a distressed bee trying to save a friend. Next, Max Moore’s short Red Box illustrates that love may be more than just watching movies. Music videos by Moore, of Louisville, have been featured by NPR, SPIN, Pitchfork, MTV, and VH1. Bongo by Evan Sennett presents a silent love story between two unlikely people. Work by Sennett, a student at the Youth Performing Arts School, has been screened around the state and region. The episode concludes with Candace, by Lexington high-school student Candace Wade, about a girl lost in thoughts of silent film star Wallace Reid. You can also catch this program Thursday, March 27 at midnight/11 pm on KET and Friday, March 28 at

Max Moore

The second program, premiering Monday, March 31 at 10/9 pm on the Kentucky Channel, features Moore’s Check Out Line, a story of procrastination and infatuation, and Writing the Big One by Sennett, a classic detective story in modern times. It also airs Thursday, April 3 at midnight/11 pm on KET.

SHORT TAKES Today’s KET: Asking the Big Questions

KET provides essential resources to teachers, students, communities

For children, the world is filled with big questions. Why aren’t dinosaurs alive anymore? Why is the moon out in the daytime? Do I have to take a nap? With five grandchildren under the age of four, I’m hearing questions more and more these days. Some funny, some serious. It’s wonderful to experience the world anew through their eyes! I’m also seeing firsthand how a new generation interacts with media. A recent study from Common Sense Media says that over the past two years, children’s use of mobile media has tripled, and ownership of tablets has increased five-fold. Today, KET’s youngest viewers are exploring with Curious George and The Cat in the Hat on iPads, Kindles, smartphones and computers, in addition to watching on television. Our PBS KIDS apps, online video, and shows are educational and nonviolent – it’s media we can trust that protects and nurtures young minds. Your donation directly helps make these educational resources available for every child in Kentucky. You can donate easily by calling 800-866-0366 or at KET.org/donate. We invite you to consider a monthly sustaining donation and you’ll never have to worry about whether your KET membership is up-to-date. It’s simple and convenient. You’ll enjoy Visions magazine month after month, and always know about the programs coming up on KET. When I watch my grandchildren learning to count, learning to read, learning respect for others, and so much more, it’s beyond gratifying to me. I know how much KET’s programs mean to my family, and I hear every day how important KET is to families all across Kentucky. With your donation, you’re helping to open the wonders of the world to young minds, answering their big questions, and gently guiding children on amazing journeys of discovery.

March 2014 is a busy month for KET as we strive to assist Kentucky educators, students, and more through conferences, workshops, and new resources. Right now, we are developing new mathematics resources. As part of a national grant funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, KET is producing 50 engaging, standards-based online videos and interactives for math students in grades 5-8 on topics ranging from proportional reasoning to fraction division and multiplication to Cartesian graphs. Many of these resources are available on PBS LearningMedia as part of the Math at the Core: Middle School collection. Eventually, this collection will contain more than 400 resources, including the 50 developed by KET. Visit PBS LearningMedia via KET EncycloMedia at KET.org/encyclomedia to check out this growing collection. This month, educators attending the Kentucky Society for Technology in Education (KySTE) conference in Louisville in early March will get hands-on demonstrations of KET’s many digital learning services and resources for schools — and guidance from our Education staff on how they can be best used in individual schools. In addition, KET’s latest Operation Preparation course, designed to train people in local communities as advisors for eighth- and 10th-grade students, debuts this month on PBS TeacherLine. Advisors can include business men and women, parents, college students, retirees — anyone who is interested in helping young people set goals for success in school and beyond. Operation Preparation is a joint effort of the Kentucky Department of Education and the Department of Workforce Development. You’ll find a link to KET’s Operation Preparation course on KET.org/education.

Federal grant permits transmitter upgrade KET has received a nearly $358,000 federal grant to upgrade four transmitters in southeastern and eastern Kentucky with digital microwave communication systems. The funding will replace 20 analog microwave communication systems with digital systems to connect the KET Network Center to WKSO in Somerset, WKMR in Morehead, WKHA in Hazard, and WKPI in Pikeville. The digital equipment will help KET serve viewers in these rural areas of the state with more reliable access to programs and services. The federal funding is part of the Public Television Digital Transition Grant program through USDA Rural Development. The USDA awarded grants totaling more than $2.5 million to Kentucky and five other states. “We continue to receive funding and support for education and economic development tools that will help us transform this region of our state,” said Gov. Steve Beshear. “These digital upgrades allow the four stations to strengthen communications within their communities and to increase access to critical educational programming.” “Upgrading our digital infrastructure is a vital part of our future, and this investment in Eastern Kentucky stations will help in ‘Shaping Our Appalachian Region,’” said Congressman Hal Rogers. “Together with the upcoming expansion of high-speed, high-capacity broadband in our region, we can launch into the world market where digital access provides new opportunities for families, business, healthcare and education.” “Every Kentuckian deserves the best educational media, delivered on an all-digital transmission system,” said Shae Hopkins, KET executive director and CEO. “We appreciate this important investment from the USDA and are proud to join Congressman Hal Rogers and Governor Steve Beshear in advancing educational opportunity in Eastern Kentucky.”
