MOM ON A MISSION KET helps Kelsey Starks raise good citizens

W

HEN KELSEY STARKS’ daughters, Riess and Avery, hit the door each afternoon after school, it’s the usual routine of shedding backpacks and shoes, then snacks in the kitchen, and kisses for their baby brother, John. But after those formalities are dispensed with, the two girls, ages 9 and 5, are eager to find their iPad or head to the computer, where their favorite PBS KIDS educational games are waiting for them to continue the learning. “Both girls love to learn. I hope that’s something I’ve helped instill in them,” said the Owensboro native who, for nearly a decade, hosted WHAS-TV’s “Good Morning, Kentuckiana.” “When they come home from school in the afternoon they always ask, ‘Can I have screen time and get on PBS KIDS?’” After a career that took her to New York, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Charleston, SC, Kelsey and her husband, Chris, began to feel the tug of home, and found Louisville to their liking. “We fell in love with Louisville and Kentucky in general,” she said. Then, in 2016, with a growing family, she took on a new career: a stayat-home mom. 2

Kelsey Starks with John, Riess, and Avery

“My job now is to raise good citizens,” said Kelsey, who says her career as a journalist fosters the spirit of community service she received from her parents: her dad, also a broadcaster, and her mother, who presided over the Chamber of Commerce. Through her role as the host of KET’s News Quiz, an in-school current events program, Kelsey is able to keep a toe in broadcasting. “I think that everybody who grows up watching KET knows

homepage,” she said. “Riess will get on there and find some kind of animal, and I’ll [discover] that she has not only learned about the blue whale, but she has written down facts about it, printed and cut out pictures of the whale. And she’s super-excited to learn about it. “And as a parent,” she continued, “I know that they’re in that computer room and I don’t have to worry about what they’re finding, because I know they’re on PBS KIDS — and the same goes for

“I think that everybody who grows up watching KET knows the importance it has in a community.” the importance it has in a community. And that’s why I got into journalism in the first place,” she said. And now, she adds, her association with KET blends nicely with her immersion in her children’s education, including instilling in them a drive toward community service. Back home, the girls turn to their favorite programs; at 2, John loves Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood and Sesame Street; Avery can’t get enough of Word Girl; and for Riess, it’s Wild Kratts. “PBS KIDS is saved on our

TV. As long as I know they’re on KET, I know I don’t have to worry about what they’re seeing.” Combining the learning they receive at PBS KIDS with the TV counterparts provides the Starks with a comprehensive way to blend their children’s entertainment and education, she said. “It’s a really difficult job to keep kids engaged and interested in something that’s educational. They have shiny objects all over the place: iPads, television, computers, and phones. KET’s ability to help them to learn and be kept interested is just exceptional.”

A

s we continue commemorating KET’s 50 years of service to the Commonwealth, we can proudly say that educational children’s programming has been an important part of this entire journey. It is with your generous support that KET purchases award-winning children’s programs – as well as viewer favorites including Nature, Nova, Masterpiece, Antiques Roadshow, Doc Martin, Ken Burns documentaries, classic movies, and so much more. With an annual cost to KET of $3 million, acquiring this programming is possible because of you. Since 1975, our on-air pledge drives have been an opportunity to showcase the many ways viewer support of KET benefits all the people of Kentucky. My first role at KET was working pledge drives. Much has changed since then – including now having four channels broadcasting 24/7 as well as a vast library of online programs that are just a click away. However, one thing that has remained the same is the incredible generosity and good will of so many across our entire viewing area. During this year’s TeleFund, we invite you to enjoy a fun selection of specials, including an endearing look at the life and legacy of Fred Rogers, and extend our sincerest appreciation for your support. Thank you! Sincerely,

Shae Hopkins

Workforce programs and services from KET receive national grant The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) recently announced a grant to KET for the American Graduate: Getting to Work initiative to help advance education and career readiness locally. KET will work with partners in Kentucky to assess workforce challenges and opportunities, and produce content focused on the essential skills needed for students and workers to succeed in the job markets of today and tomorrow. “Workforce development has always been an important focus for KET,” said Tonya Crum, KET senior director for education. “We are currently planning an update to our series Workplace Essential Skills, which has helped many workers advance in both knowledge and earning power.” KET also produces STEM-related resources for middle and high school students, critical for training the next generation of workers. For those who did not graduate from high school, the FastForward learning system provides a clear path for getting a GED® credential. The new grants represent the next phase of public media’s successful American Graduate initiative, which was launched in 2011 to address the nation’s dropout rate. During the past six years, public media stations across the country forged community connections and innovative partnerships to help improve student outcomes — substantially contributing to an increase in the national high school graduation rate to an all-time high of 84 percent. KET is one of 19 stations receiving these American Graduate grants as part of the national effort.

Children in Louisville benefit from KET-led science instruction Youngsters learned concepts such as mixtures, materials, friction, and structures at the South Central Regional Library in Louisville thanks to KET’s science camp, a weeklong opportunity for science inquiry and engineering design processes. In January, KET Early Childhood Education staff transformed the library into a science learning center for almost 30 kids and their families through a partnership with the library. KET to live-stream STLP state championship Building on a longtime partnership with the Kentucky Department of Education’s Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP), KET will live-stream events during the 2018 STLP State Championship on March 29 at Rupp Arena in Lexington. Tune in to KET’s live streaming site at KET.org/live to see creative Kentucky students and celebrate their year-long digital projects. STLP uses project-based learning principles to empower student learning and achievement through the utilization (and creation) of technology to solve school and community needs. This student work is showcased each year at the STLP State Championship.

KET’s early childhood education resources win national award for instruction

YOUR SUPPORT HELPS MAKE KET POSSIBLE

KET’s Everyday Learning instructional media collection was recently honored with a National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA) Award. The Everyday Learning collection received a NETA Award for Teacher Resources in the Instructional Media category. To date, these resources have been viewed more than 630,000 times. Everyday Learning includes standardsbased videos, interactives, and support material for early childhood educators produced by KET and available nationally via PBS LearningMedia. The collection of more than 100 digital resources introduces basic concepts of math, science, social studies, art, and health to young learners in an engaging way. “KET’s Everyday Learning curricula and our accompanying early childhood teacher training have given educators all over Kentucky hands-on experience in using these innovative resources in their classrooms,” said Shae Hopkins, KET’s executive director and CEO.

Thank you to the following corporate partners for their generous support of excellence in television.

Coming in April: Civilizations Civilizations, a new nine-part series premiering in April, tells the story of art from the dawn of human history to the present day — for the first time on a global scale. This bold new series will reveal the role art and the creative imagination have played in the forging of humanity itself, and introduce a new generation to works of beauty, ingenuity, and illumination created across cultures and continents.

MORE TO EXPLORE

A BLAST FROM THE PAST Do you remember “Aren’t You Glad There’s KET!,” “Be More,” and other slogans that went along with our on-air fundraisers? KET has been broadcasting full-scale on-air fundraisers since 1975. That was also the year KET began broadcasting seven days a week and our first GED®preparation series was distributed nationally. Along the way, KET staff and volunteers have had a lot of fun during TeleFund, hosting guests such as Col. Harland Sanders and volunteer phone banks from businesses and organizations across the Commonwealth. With the loyal support of our members and donors, KET has been able to purchase and broadcast the programs you rely on and enjoy. Thanks for being with us for 50 years.
