“D-Day was probably the most defining day of the 20th century .... if it wasn’t for all that, we wouldn’t have the life we have today.”

or 50 years, Robert L. Williams didn’t speak much of the war. But all that changed in 1994 when, at the age of 71, he joined with other paratroopers in the skies above Normandy, France, to re-create his dramatic jump into history. A Northern Kentucky native, Williams (featured in Kentucky WWII Veterans: In Their Own Words) enlisted in the Army in 1942 at the age of 19. Sent to Georgia, he trained at Camp Toccoa, where the young recruits got into the best shape of their lives by running three miles up a mountain every day before breakfast. More training in Tennessee and Kentucky, then it was off to New York to board an English passenger liner across the Atlantic and join the now world-wide fray. At midnight on June 6, 1944, Williams and 12,000 other members of the 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions were already in the air aboard C-44 troop carriers, waiting to drop into the skies. Below, troops were hitting the beaches at Utah and Omaha. D-Day. Loaded with 100 pounds of gear, Williams parachuted behind enemy lines into a swamp created by the Nazis for the very purpose of bogging paratroopers. “It was very dark, a partly moonlit night,” Williams remembers. “You couldn’t see where you were going to land, and I had no idea I was going to land in water.”

Fifty years later, it was a very different scene on Utah Beach. “It was daylight, nobody was shooting at the airplane, and when we walked off the field, there was a huge crowd greeting the old guys.” That jump was Williams’ brainchild — something he’d been thinking about during those 50 years of silence. His vast collection of wartime memorabilia had been tucked away in the attic and basement — a war diary kept by buddy “Jokin’ Joe Jones” Slosarczyk, who never saw his Wisconsin home again; newspapers; dog tags and pinup girls, photos, booklets, memories. But the silence was broken when Williams — who persevered through Pentagon red tape to arrange the commemorative jump — saw just how much his plunge into the darkened French skies meant to people 50 years later. When he saw how a grateful France pulled out all the stops to celebrate the anniversary of D-Day. When he saw the crowds cheering the “old guys.” “It was a grand way to bring attention back to the guys who made the sacrifice. The more I thought about it, the more I wanted to do it.” There was the tribute, and of course the excitement. But what Williams didn’t expect was the visceral memories which would emerge when the former soldiers strapped on their parachutes once more. “When the pilot started up the

engines on that old C-47 transport, that’s when the guys got quiet. Fifty years disappeared. The smell of the plane, the sound of the engine. It all came back to me,” said Williams, his face betraying the emotion the memory evoked. “We were all laughing and joking beforehand, but as soon as that engine started, all their expressions changed.” And so today Williams visits schools, where children born 50 years after his first historic jump listen closely to his story. He signs his book, Return to Normandy, he displays his wartime collection. “The life we have today is the most easy, comfortable life that’s ever been invented,” he says. “It’s all possible because of the defining days of World War II. D-Day was probably the most defining day of the 20th century, because it was the turning point.” “There were 5,000 ships out there in the English Channel; there were 900 planes full of paratroopers. It was the biggest sea-air invasion the world has ever seen. And if it wasn’t for that, we wouldn’t have the life we have today.”

Remember D-Day and World War II in programs this May

t was 70 years ago, on June 6, 1944, that an airborne

assault of 24,000 British, U.S., and Canadian troops and an amphibious landing of Allied infantry and armored divisions began on the coast of Normandy, France. D-Day. Remember this anniversary, and explore the history and legacy of the Nazi rise to power in programs airing this month. In addition, veterans’ issues and the annual Memorial Day concert (see story facing page) make May a month of remembrance.

National Memorial Day Concert CELEBRATES ITS 25TH ANNIVERSARY

COMING BACK In the new three-episode series Coming Back with Wes Moore, the best-selling author and U.S. Army veteran details his search for answers to difficult questions facing returning veterans. It begins Tuesday, May 13 at 8/7 pm on KET2 and Sunday, May 18 at 3/2 pm on KET. Moore’s journey, spurred by the suicide of an old friend and fellow officer, takes him into the personal lives of different soldiers as they attempt to reintegrate into society, establish new identities and, for many, find a new mission. The first episode features a veteran who has successfully translated his experience in the military to a career as a police officer. “Fitting In,” airing May 20 and 25, focuses on the idea of fitting in at home when soldiers are fundamentally changed by war. “Moving Forward” on May 27 and June 1 examines the drive that veterans often have of finding a new mission after returning from war.

‘Kentucky Tonight’ features candidate programs, primary election coverage KET continues its in-depth political coverage with Kentucky Tonight programs featuring candidates for U.S. Congress in the May primaries. Hosted by Bill Goodman, the Kentucky Tonight programs with candidates air Mondays at 8/7 pm on KET. The programs will also stream live at KET.org/live and are archived online. On May 5, 5th and 6th District Democratic Primary candidates will be featured, and on May 12, Democratic candidates from the 1st and 3rd districts will appear. In addition, Primary 2014, hosted by Goodman and Renee Shaw, presents comprehensive statewide coverage of the 2014 primary election returns in Kentucky. They are joined in the studio by political observers Ellen Williams, Jennifer Moore, and Al Cross. It begins at 8/7 pm May 20 on KET. Additional election coverage and analysis continues on Comment on Kentucky Fridays at 8/7 pm on KET, and the topic of the May 19 Kentucky Tonight program will be the election.

Meet five people making the world a better place

The five recipients of a prestigious award bestowed by the University of Louisville in the fields of music, political science, psychology, education, and religion are interviewed in The Power of Ideas: Louisville’s Grawemeyer Awards, airing Monday, May 12 at 5/4 pm on KET KY. The recipients, who receive $100,000 prizes, are interviewed by Allan Dittmer, the awards program director. They’re psychological anthropologist Tanya Luhrmann, education historian Diane Ravitch, neuroscience professor Antonio Damasio, international relations professor Jacques Hymans, and composer Djuro Zivkovic. Their work includes a Bach-inspired piece for chamber orchestra and books offering new insight on evangelical Christians, nuclear weapons, education reform, and decision-making. The awards were created in 1984 by Charles Grawemeyer, a UofL alumnus and philanthropist. The Power of Ideas: Louisville’s Grawemeyer Awards also airs Thursday, May 15 at 7/6 pm on the Kentucky Channel.

SHORT TAKES Today’s KET: Honoring those who served As Memorial Day approaches, we are featuring programs that explore the many facets of U.S. military service and combat, from remembering the epic WWII D-Day operation on its 70th anniversary to delving into some of the most difficult questions facing veterans returning from war today. The popular National Memorial Day Concert, presenting its 25th anniversary broadcast this year, is sure to provide another wonderfully uplifting mix of tribute and performance. I’m proud that KET offers these programs because they honor the service and sacrifice of the brave men and women in uniform who, along with their families, have given so much for our country. Like many of you, I have a family history rich in military service. We still have my father’s Marine Corps uniform, and we’re proud of my uncle’s service in Vietnam. Stories of my grandfather fighting in WWII at the Battle of the Bulge, as well as of my great aunt, who was one of the first women to enlist in the WAVES, will always fill me with gratitude. I’m similarly touched by remarkable stories like that of Robert Williams, featured again in this issue of Visions from his interview in the 2007 KET documentary Kentucky WWII Veterans: In Their Own Words. These are only a handful of the countless acts of service to our country and stories of heroism and valor that deserve to be shared and never forgotten. So join us in remembering all those who have served, especially those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, and sharing our appreciation for the many courageous men and women who continue to serve our country. KET educators lend expertise to teachers in Kentucky KET provides vital instruction to students and teachers alike in a wealth of conferences and training sessions all year long. The first part of 2014 was no exception. In March, KET was the site of the Adult Educator Multimedia Day, a daylong professional development event designed to help Kentucky adult education teachers learn how to incorporate technology into instruction. KET education consultants were on hand at the Kentucky Society for Technology Education (KySTE) conference, also held in March, in Louisville to talk about the many high-quality teaching and learning resources available from KET.
