LIFE November 2015
‘Kentucky Life’ returns with new stories and new host
W
hether it’s the quiet, breathtaking beauty of an isolated mountain waterfall, or the busy streets of one of the Commonwealth’s largest cities, the history and heritage of Kentucky is all around us. Kentucky Life will continue to explore the artists, musicians, ordinary folks, and extraordinary stories that make our state unique as it welcomes former major leaguer Doug Flynn as host this month. “The program remains consistent to its roots — bring the best of Kentucky to our viewers’ homes,” said Brandon Wickey, the series producer. “We’re looking at what makes up life: home, family. There’s craft, there’s tradition. It’s all the things the show’s been about before, but we’re looking to emphasize that even more.”
Doug Flynn brings his love for Kentucky to KET this fall
The first program on November 14 opens with outdoors enthusiast Flynn in an enjoyable trip down the Kentucky River, where the locks have recently been reopened to river traffic. He’ll be speeding along at 70 miles per hour, a little too fast, though, for him to enjoy one of his favorite hobbies, fishing! The opener also features Kentucky military veterans and a spooky trip through the “haunted” mansions of Old Louisville, a series which will extend over several programs. And throughout the new season, viewers can expect to get to know Flynn, and see life in Kentucky through his eyes in a mix of fun and heartwarming stories. “Doug has a big heart,” Wickey noted. In the second program, airing Nov. 21, Flynn travels to Ashland to sample the fare at Suplex Taco, where three brothers give the Southern California treatment to Mexican cuisine. The episode also focuses on singer Marty Brown and the cities of Covington and Owensoboro’s bicentennials. After a break, new Kentucky Life programs will air in January. Watch for a pigeon-racing hobbyist, a special on Kentucky’s role in the War of 1812, a hike at Martin’s Fork, a trip to the Corvette assembly plant, and more.
“I’m from Kentucky, I love Kentucky and I’ve never left Kentucky,” said Doug Flynn, the new host of Kentucky Life. And it seems the name of the Bluegrass State is never far from the lips of the former MLB player who played for the Reds and the Mets — and who today thinks catching fish is much more important that catching fly balls. “I love the outdoors and I love to fish — I take it pretty seriously,” he said. He also takes his love for the state seriously, too, so much so that when out-of-staters think there’s not much more to Kentucky than the Derby, he’s quick to correct them. “I love to tell them there’s so much more that they don’t know. There’s all the wonderful history, the great statesmen that we’ve had, all the wonderful places full of natural beauty, and the greatest park system in the country.” As a lifelong Kentuckian, Doug believes that if you live in this state and say you love it, you need to know something about it. “The history here, there is so much of it!” he said. “I have been impressed, just in the short time I’ve been associated with KET, with just how much history that I don’t know. But I’m proud of my state and I want to share it.” Doug looks forward to telling the stories of extraordinary Kentuckians and meeting Kentucky Life fans while on the road. “When I’m traveling, I like to stop off at small stores, sit down and relax, and get to know people. I hope to bring just a little different twist to the show — it’ll be the same things through different eyes,” he said. KET.org

A SALUTE TO VETERANS 20
In Their Own Words: Kentucky Veterans of the Korean War KET Tuesday, Nov. 10 • 8/7 pm They were there, during the Inchon Invasion, the Battle of Chosin Resevoir, and at Heartbreak Hill. They fought valiantly in a land where 60 years later, repercussions are still felt. They are the men from the Commonwealth who fought in what has been called “the forgotten war,” who tell their stories in this KET documentary. Participants include Richard Zapata, right, a Louisville Marine, who tells the story of his beach landing; Paul Hammersley of Bowling Green, who recounts the story of “Sergeant Reckless,” a Thoroughbred mare who carried supplies alone; and Earnest West of Wurtland, the only surviving Kentucky recipient of the Medal of Honor, who recalls how he saved wounded members of his squad who’d been injured by enemy grenades on Heartbreak Ridge.
Iwo Jima: From Combat to Comrades KET Monday, Nov. 9 • 9/8 pm KET2 Sunday, Nov. 15 • 9/8 pm In an unforgettable journey back to the iconic site of one of the fiercest battles of World War II, this program tells the story of the American and Japanese servicemen who came together 70 years later for a historic reunion in March. Two film crews were used to capture the historic reunion — an American unit followed three U.S. veterans, while a Japanese crew filmed Tsuriji Akikusa, the only Japanese survivor able to make the arduous trip to Iwo Jima. Through their firsthand accounts, go back to 1945 when these men first encountered each other as four of the 90,000 combatants on an eight square mile island, a dot in the Pacific Ocean just 650 miles from Tokyo.

Kentucky at War: Desert Storm KET Monday, Nov. 9 • 10/9 pm KET2 Sunday, Nov. 15 • 10/9 pm When Saddam Hussein launched his 1990 attack on Kuwait, it shocked the world. President Bush responded to this “naked aggression” by implementing Operation Desert Shield to prevent Iraq from invading Saudi Arabia and its rich oil fields that much of the world depended upon. This program presents the personal story of the men and women of the Commonwealth who answered the president’s call to arms, including Bennie McRae of Nicholasville, for whom the military was a lifelong dream, and Glenna Gilbert of Winchester, who joined a “band of sisters” that during Operation Desert Storm were the largest deployments of military women in the history of the United States.
Debt of Honor: Disabled Veterans in American History KET2 Tuesday, Nov.10 • 9/8 pm KET Monday, Nov.16 • 10/9 pm A new documentary by six-time Emmy Award-winning director Ric Burns, Debt of Honor examines the way in which the American government and society as a whole have regarded disabled veterans throughout history. The program combines personal stories, told by distinguished disabled veterans, with deep history from leading scholars in the fields of disability studies, history, and psychology to illustrate the human cost of war and the enormous sacrifices of military service. “The goal of this film is to try to understand the realities and challenges that disabled veterans have faced throughout history and continue to face today,” said Burns.

SHORT TAKES Today’s KET: Delivering the best, thanks to you November is an exciting month on KET. Children will enjoy the new series Nature Cat, which both teaches kids about the outdoors and inspires them to get outside and explore for themselves. You can count on KET for insight and information on the gubernatorial and constitutional office elections, culminating in our live election night results and analysis. We have new seasons of two of our most popular KET productions: Kentucky Life and Kentucky Collectibles. Kentucky Life welcomes a new host, Doug Flynn — a gifted storyteller and unwavering enthusiast of all this great state has to offer. On Kentucky Collectibles, host Amy Hess reveals interesting stories, many with connections to Kentucky’s history and heritage, through objects ranging from prized heirlooms to flea market finds. This month, Nova features a sweeping biography of our homeland in “Making North America,” while the PBS Arts Fall Festival provides front-row seats for performances that take viewers from Broadway to Hollywood. And Masterpiece transports us across time and the globe as it continues the gripping saga “Indian Summers.” And finally, before the new season of Doc Martin begins in January, you can enjoy a special preview of the first episode on Thanksgiving night. Whether it’s history or science, arts or public affairs, drama or documentaries, KET is home to the broadest selection of quality programming that can be found anywhere. We thank you for helping to make it all possible. Sincerely, Shae Hopkins KET Executive Director and CEO 22
