ON PARRISH HAS ALWAYS BEEN ABLE TO TALK about his Vietnam experiences. Not that it isn’t difficult. His losses — and they were great — affect him more and more as the years pass. Emotions rise more readily to the surface. “As time moves on, my emotions get worse,” said Parrish, who deployed to Vietnam in October 1968 with “C” Battery of the Kentucky Army National Guard, an artillery unit of men from Bardstown and the surrounding area. “We went to Washington last fall to help our daughter and her husband move into a new apartment. While we were there, we went to the wall,” he said, his voice breaking as he remembered visiting the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. “It was tough. I’ve been there many times, and the crazy thing about it is that it gets tougher every time.”

efficient,” he said with pride. “Why? Because we went to school together and we knew each other. So when it came time to do our job, we did it well.” An attack by the Viet Cong on a rainy night at the difficult-to-defend Firebase Tomahawk, however, was too much for even the best of the best. In that summer of 1969, four Bardstown boys were killed plus another, from “A” Battery of nearby Carrollton. The story of that loss, one of the worst suffered from any town during the war, has brought news outlets, television documentarians, and authors to Parrish’s door, and he has been interviewed by CNN, CBS Sunday Morning, and more about the fatal attack. He also shares his experience with KET in Kentucky Veterans of the Vietnam War: In their Own Words. (Read more on pages 4-5.) “There are a lot of guys who don’t talk about it — except to me,” said Parrish, who returned to Vietnam and

HOMETOWNHERO Parrish served, suffered loss in Vietnam War

Parrish, a member of KET’s Friends Board, a volunteer organization which promotes KET in counties statewide, was born and raised in Bardstown, where he still lives. He operated his family business manufacturing concrete blocks for many years, and later opened a bookstore he and his wife, Judy, operated for nearly two decades. Parrish’s National Guard battery was “infused” with soldiers from New Hampshire. Infusion was a military policy designed to prevent too many men from the same hometown from dying in a single incident from the same unit. In Bardstown’s case, however, the policy wasn’t enough to thwart fate. During their training and tour, the soldiers from Nelson County worked together seamlessly as perhaps only men who had once been boys together can. In fact, the unit not only contained boyhood friends, but seven sets of brothers and many cousins as well. “We were declared to be the top firing battery in all of Southeast Asia because we were so effective and

Firebase Tomahawk in 1995, accompanied by other vets and WHAS-TV, which produced a program on the trip. “War is really difficult to win when you are on the enemy’s turf. That war could have been won had restraints been removed,” he said. “In fact, it is said by many, and I agree with them, that the war was won — because its purpose was to stop the spread of Communism among the Far Eastern nations. And to that end, we won the war.” When Parrish talks about Vietnam, he also remembers the good times, the camaraderie, and fond memories, like the two guys from Bloomfield, Ky., who raced one another with 95-pound Howitzer rounds in each hand. He has photographs, now fading, of the people he met — like the Catholic priest who still served at the same church when Parrish returned in 1995. The stray dogs they adopted. The bunkers where they slept at night. These memories became a part of who he is. “I’m proud of my service,” Parrish reflected. “I think we did well, and I’m sorry to lose friends, but that’s a part of war — a terrible part of war.”

KENTUCKY VETERANS SHARE THEIR VIETNAM WAR EXPERIENCES

T

he Vietnam War is one of the most complicated and divisive events in our nation’s history. KET shines a light on the experiences of veterans of that conflict in the new production Kentucky Veterans of the Vietnam War: In Their Own Words, premiering this month. More than 65 veterans were interviewed for the program, said KET producer/director Tom Bickel, who has previously produced programs about Kentucky veterans of the Korean War and World War II. Each was proud of their service, he said, but many noted they felt

that the Vietnam War wasn’t being fought to win and their efforts were hampered from above. Additionally, some Americans back home protested the war effort, and some turned their dissatisfaction with the nation’s war policy upon the returning veterans. “These soldiers were proud of what they did, but they often felt that they were not appreciated for putting on the uniform of their country,” Bickel said. Many of the veterans’

fathers fought in World War II, he said, and they were raised to believe it was a man’s responsibility to do what his country asked of him. Recounting their war experiences was difficult for many of the veterans, yet each vividly illustrates the horrors of war through their own experiences. “It wasn’t easy for them to tell these stories,” Bickel said. “Each soldier had several stories to tell. It was difficult to choose which were best to illustrate their experiences.”

One such story is recounted in the program by Marj Graves of Louisville, who served as a nurse in Vietnam. With only two weeks left on her tour, she was called to a scene of a helicopter explosion and crash, where her task was to identify 35 charred bodies. “She left nursing after that,” Bickel noted. The program also includes the experiences of Don Parrish of Bardstown, whose National Guard artillery unit was attacked one night and suffered the loss of five hometown boys — one of the highest

casualties from any one town in the war. (Read more about Parrish on pages 2-3.) Another veteran, John Outlaw of Owensboro, remembered the first time he was forced to kill the enemy — it was a woman, armed with an AK-47. “I was raised not to harm women,” he said. “But in this case it was ‘kill or be killed.’ This is not what we were raised to do.” For more programs related to veterans and war, turn to page 22.

MISTLETOE

T

KET Executive Director Shae Hopkins and Maynard Crossland, Shaker Village’s executive director, attended the September screening of the Live from Lincoln Center production “Simple Gifts: Chamber Music Society at Shaker Village” at Transylvania University. The chamber concert was recorded at the Harrodsburg historic village.

Creative Learning Workshops teach kids coding Throughout October, KET invited families with children ages 5-8 to participate in a series of four Family Creative Learning workshops featuring the PBS Kids Scratch Jr app. The families were able to create their own interactive stories and games starring PBS Kids characters. The storytelling possibilities are endless with this creative coding app. By snapping together colorful programming blocks, children make characters move, jump, dance, and sing. In the process, kids learn to solve problems, design projects, and express themselves creatively on a tablet. Learn more about the PBS Kids Scratch Jr app at pbskids.org/apps.

MORE TO EXPLORE

Examine war, battle experiences this month On Thanksgiving Day 1950, American-led United Nations troops were on the march in North Korea, and hopes were high that everyone would be home by Christmas. But soon, American military leaders were caught off guard by the entrance of the People’s Republic of China, led by Mao Zedong, into the five-month-old Korean War. More than 12,000 men suddenly found themselves surrounded, outnumbered, and at risk of annihilation at the Chosin Reservoir, high in the mountains of North Korea. The two-week battle that followed, fought in brutally cold temperatures, is one of the most celebrated in Marine Corps annals and helped set the course of American foreign policy in the Cold War and beyond.

But the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany lives on, at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico, becoming “The Great Carrier Reef,” the first authorized artificial reef. See how a Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal demolition team goes through tight tunnels throughout the ship, making sure everything is removed that could be harmful to the environment, meeting all safety codes before detonating C-4 explosive charges. The ship sank stern-first 37 minutes after detonation in 210 feet of water. Today, the site is one of the top-10 wreck-diving sites in the world. 22 VISION S

Saying Thank You

V

eterans Day provides an opportunity for us to recognize the many brave men and women who have served our country through the armed forces. However, it’s through the personal stories of these veterans that we can really begin to appreciate their intense experiences and sacrifices. This month, KET premieres Kentucky Veterans of the Vietnam War: In Their Own Words. During the production of this program, more than 65 Vietnam veterans shared stories both harrowing and inspirational. As with our previous programs featuring Kentucky’s WWII and Korean War veterans, respectively, we gain a better understanding of our history and connect on a deeper level as a community by way of these profound individual accounts. We’re honored to have had the opportunity to document these veterans’ experiences and to share them with you. To all veterans, current military personnel, and their families, we thank you. And to everyone, we encourage you to join us in showing appreciation, not just on Veterans Day, but every day of the year.

Sincerely,
