Your Kentucky Network KET’s transmission towers help connect and protect
In our unpredictable world, first responders depend on reliable, robust communication. All day, every day, KET’s 16 broadcast transmitters and towers provide a public safety backbone to support first responders and law enforcement on the local, state, and federal levels. The KET network uses a vast array of microwave radio links and “over-the air” broadcast transmitters to deliver KET’s four channels – KET, KET2, the Kentucky Channel, and KET PBS KIDS – to the entire state of Kentucky and into parts of the seven surrounding states. If you receive TV service from a cable or satellite company, your TV provider is receiving the KET signal from this broadcast transmission network and delivering it to your home. If you receive TV over-the-air, you’re connected directly to the KET broadcast network. The same transmission network infrastructure that delivers the latest Masterpiece drama, Nature documentary, and Sesame Street to your home, also helps first responders, state agencies, and the federal government communicate. KET maintains and oversees 15 towers. On these towers are 100 non-broadcast communications systems (antennas and associated equipment). KET’s microwave network and broadcast transmission sites provide secure locations for the installation of emergency communications equipment and towers to place antennas. Each site is backed up with an emergency generator and can run for up to 72 hours after loss of commercial power. Fuel can be delivered to those sites in the event of an emergency. This infrastructure helps KET partner with and support a wide variety of state and federal agencies. “Kentucky Emergency Management, the Kentucky National Guard, police mobile data, the Kentucky Department 2

of Transportation, the Department of Fish and Wildlife — all have their antennas on many of our towers,” said Curtis Harper, KET’s director of transmission systems. “We also supply, in many cases, building space for their equipment and the power,” Harper continued, “saving these agencies a great deal of operating expense. In the case of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), KET engineers also maintain the equipment which provides 24/7 weather-radio transmissions to the public. The KET network supports NOAA’s National Weather Service with 13 NOAA weather transmitters on KET towers. These 100- to 1,000-foot towers — much taller than regional radio or cell-phone towers — serve as a welldistributed statewide communications framework benefitting each of these entities. That’s because back when KET went on the air in 1968, transmitter towers were constructed in strategic locations all over the state in order to reach every Kentucky public school. Those tall towers help provide an unobstructed transmission path to
viewers. Today, that wide disbursement continues to provide an efficient use of taxpayer dollars, often eliminating the need for other agencies to construct their own towers. KET transmission sites host equipment used by the FBI, the U.S. Secret Service and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. And many sites are used by local agencies for communications, including sheriff departments and local emergency management. The federal government’s Emergency Alert System also takes advantage of KET’s towers. In the event of a national emergency, a special receiver in KET’s network center would override KET’s broadcast and communicate vital information. It’s tested weekly, and the federal government conducts nationwide tests periodically, Harper noted. KET’s public safety infrastructure — towers, transmitters, interconnection equipment and more — are the result of more than 50 years of state and federal government investments. KET’s network is your Kentucky network.
T
he recent spate of devastating natural disasters — including hurricanes, earthquakes, and forest fires — provide a good reminder that emergencies can and will strike at any moment. And when they do strike, reliable communications are critical for the brave men and women who run to and not from disaster. KET transmitters form a vital link in the Commonwealth’s emergency communications system. The national weather service, fire, police, emergency medical services, and others rely on KET’s network to help keep us all safe. We appreciate the responsibility. And we offer our heartfelt thanks to all of Kentucky’s dedicated first responders and emergency professionals. Sincerely,
Shae Hopkins

1 Nova: Killer Hurricanes KET Wednesday, Nov. 1 • 9/8 pm KET2 Sunday, Nov. 5 • 7/6 pm As we experience one of the worst hurricane seasons on record, Nova experts reconstruct the Great Hurricane of 1780 to help predict the risk of future mega-storms. That massive tempest took nine days to blast its way across the Caribbean, killing at least 20,000 — the highest known death toll of any single weather event in history. Historians and storm sleuths track down clues in eyewitness chronicles, old ruins, and computer simulations, discovering that this truly terrifying, 300-mile-wide storm — with wind speeds probably exceeding 230 miles an hour and 25-feet storm surges — demolished everything in its path.

Take an intimate journey into the personal life of the prolific actor and director who is best known for playing Spock in the Star Trek franchise. The program provides a glimpse into the last years of Nimoy’s life, including his battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Though he had stopped smoking decades before, he was not diagnosed early enough to make a difference in the disease and it ended his life. Like his iconic alter ego, “Mr. Spock,” he endured the disease in stoic silence but broke it to passionately warn others of the dangers of smoking.

Watch as the cubs explore the world around them and discover their place on the savannah. Over time, they develop into brave and successful predators ensuring their species will survive another generation.

Kids and families enjoy ‘Be My Neighbor’ days Families enjoyed special “Be My Neighbor” days at Broad Run Park in Louisville and at the Russell School Community Services Center in Lexington. The events were based on the Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood episode “Neighbor Day,” which introduced a whole new generation of kids and families to the power of one small, good deed creating a ripple effect of kindness throughout the neighborhood. Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood is built on the iconic PBS KIDS program Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood. In Lexington, families made fleece blankets for One Parent Scholar House and Chrysalis House, made cards for senior citizens, and enjoyed storytelling. In Louisville, the focus was on the environment, and more than 1,400 people turned out for nature walks and treeplanting to help replace the more than 50,000 trees Louisville loses each year. 20 VISION S

MORE TO EXPLORE
KET town hall program explores workforce needs in the state What are the jobs and needs of Kentucky employers? And what programs are doing innovative work to increase participation in today’s competitive labor force that requires highly-skilled workers? Find out in Filling Kentucky Jobs Gap:A KET Forum. The hour-long program, hosted by KET’s Renee Shaw, aims to shed light on Kentucky’s workforce participation gaps, the reasons behind these gaps, and how the state compares to the national average. It will also bring together those involved in workforce and education striving to provide opportunities and solutions. “The program is in response to several recent studies on Kentucky’s workforce,” said Shaw, KET’s public affairs managing producer. “For example, the Kentucky Chamber May 2017 study on Workforce Participation in Kentucky found the need for 165,000 more jobs to be competitive with the national average participation rate of 62.7 percent.”

A tale of two astronauts
Programs follow twin NASA astronauts on Earth and in space Catch an encore of A Year in Space —recent winner of the 2017 Outstanding Science and Technology Emmy — and then follow up with the all-new Beyond a Year in Space.
Mark and Scott Kelly
First, follow astronaut Scott Kelly in space on the International Space Station, where he lived for 12 months. Despite the technological “comforts” of the ISS, a year in space — the longest space mission in American history — has been described as the epitome of extreme, with extraordinarily high physical stakes. 22 VISION S

NO V EM B ER 2017
Following Scott in space and his identical twin and fellow astronaut Mark Kelly at home on Earth, the program outlines what it takes, mentally and physically, to spend a year in space and then, using what NASA has learned from the Kelly brothers, what it means for humanity as we journey to Mars and beyond. Scott Kelly Then, Beyond a Year in Space chronicles Scott’s return and adjustment to life on Earth, and tracks the extensive medical testing undergone by the brothers. Although Scott maintained a rigorous exercise program in space, the physical toll of the voyage is evident upon his return as he suffers from sore muscles, stiff joints, flu-like symptoms, skin sensitivity, and inflammation. “Gravity definitely gives you a beat-down when you get back,” he said. “My feet still bother me some — I didn’t walk on them for a year!” The program also introduces two new astronauts preparing to venture farther than humankind has ever gone and provides a behind-the-scenes look at how they are training to go the distance.
