PRIORITIES? For the Kelly family, it’s education — and KET
W
HEN YOU TALK TO KAREN KELLY about priorities, one of the first things you’ll hear is “education.” Encouraged by a mentor at one of her earliest jobs, she returned to college as a non-traditional student and earned a bachelor’s degree, fulfilling a promise she’d made to her dad at 16. “Education comes first in our family,” said Kelly, the district director for U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers. “That’s what my husband, John, and I believe, and that’s what we want to encourage for our college-age daughters as well as our 5-year-old son, Blake. We believe that education is something worth putting your time, energy, and resources into as a family, and we make it a priority.” Today, their daughters, Destini and Anna, are set to graduate from the University of Kentucky and Tufts University, respectively — one already making plans for graduate school. Blake is an eager kindergarten student and an avid viewer of the educational programs provided by KET though PBS Kids. “We’ve always been very guarded about his time with television and the iPad — and PBS Kids is the primary choice for us to allow Blake to watch,” she said. The Kellys aren’t alone: 88 percent of parents recently surveyed said that PBS Kids is a trusted and safe place to watch television and visit digital platforms. Blake, a curious and personable child who’s conversant on both Venus Flytrap and aloe plants, is thrilled to use the one app Kelly has for him on her phone — again, PBS Kids. “It has the only games we allow him to play and is the only app on my phone for him to watch shows,” she noted. “And I really like the games!” Blake chimed in. He’s just one of 11 million who visit pbskids.org,
a leading innovator in educational media. In fact, 80 percent of those surveyed said PBS Kids is the undisputed leader in children’s programming. Initially, what propelled the Kellys toward public television for Blake was observing how he behaved after watching other TV offerings. “John and I noticed a while back that there were certain shows that immediately changed his behavior, and it wasn’t positive,” she said. “Not that they used bad language, but it wasn’t positive programming. We made the determination that if we’re serious about education, then Blake should be exposed to the things that positively affect his behavior and learning.” In addition to the safe options it offers, PBS Kids also addresses essential skills, like STEM, literacy, and social and emotional development. One of Blake’s favorites is Ready Jet Go!, which focuses on science, technology, engineering, and math. “He loves the shows that involve math,” said Kelly. He loves Wild Kratts and he’ll talk to you about conservation. He loves Ready Jet Go! — he’s fascinated with space and can name the planets, in order. It’s fun but it’s educational, and we’ve seen positive outcomes.” Kelly’s projections are spot-on. Studies show that children who engage with PBS Kids math content see great improvement on standardized math assessments. According to a recent poll, a full 92 percent of those surveyed agreed that PBS Kids helped their children learn reading, math, and social skills. “Like a lot of parents, we believe Blake is very gifted with language and memory skills. He doesn’t forget things, so when he’s exposed to something, it has a real impact on him,” she added. “We really feel PBS Kids and KET are worth our time and investment into Blake’s education.”

Broadway and history combine in a look at the making of the megahit
T
Lin-Manuel Miranda
Screening of Hamilton’s America set for Monday, Oct. 17 You’re invited to rise up! Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts Lobby & Bomhard Theater
6:30 PM • REVOLUTIONARY RECEPTION with hip-hop
choreography, an 18th century selfie booth, fight choreography, colonial currency, and more.
7:30 PM • FILM PREVIEW 8:00 PM • SING-A-LONG & DISCUSSION WITH HARRY PICKENS Hosted by KET, StageOne Family Theatre, and the Kentucky Center. Because of mature themes in “Hamilton,” this event is recommended for ages 13+.
he story of Alexander Hamilton is most remembered for its dramatic conclusion, which saw Hamilton killed by Vice President Aaron Burr in a duel. But the full story of this political genius — a poor immigrant who built himself up from nothing to become one of the nation’s most vital architects — has largely been forgotten by history … until now. Learn how history was brought to vivid life through Lin-Manuel Miranda’s pop culture Broadway phenomenon Hamilton: An American Musical. The winner of 11 Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize, the revolutionary musical is redefining how audiences learn about history. Now, Hamilton’s America on Great Performances delves deep into the creation of the show, revealing Miranda’s process of absorbing and then adapting Hamilton’s epic story into groundbreaking musical theater. Providing a unique window into the artistry and research involved in making the show, the program includes trips to historic locations, such as Mount Vernon and Valley Forge with Miranda, who portrays Hamilton in the play. Also included are interviews with prominent personalities, experts, politicians, and musicians including President Barack Obama, President George W. Bush, House Speaker Paul Ryan, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Jimmy Fallon, and Stephen Sondheim. Hamilton’s America demonstrates the timelessness of the hot-button issues in today’s America: immigration, states’ rights, debt, income inequality, and race relations. These were the same fights that defined Hamilton’s time and are the driving force of Miranda’s historic work.

3 Independent Lens: The Best of Enemies KET Monday, Oct. 3 • 9/8 pm KET2 Sunday, Oct. 9 • 9/8 pm In the summer of 1968, television news changed forever. Dead last in the ratings, ABC News hired two towering public intellectuals to debate each other during the Democratic and Republican national conventions: William F. Buckley Jr. of the new conservative movement and Democrat Gore Vidal, a cousin to Jackie Onassis and leftist novelist. They pummeled out policy and personal insult, their explosive exchanges devolving into vitriolic name-calling. They kept viewers riveted and a new era in contentious public discourse was born.

12 Nature: Super Hummingbirds KET Wednesday, Oct. 12 • 8/7 pm KET2 Saturday, Oct. 15 • 6/5 pm Hummingbirds are amazing creatures; the tiniest of birds, yet they possess super powers that enable them to fly backwards and upside-down, and to float mid-air. Their wings beat faster than the eye can see, and they also are only found in the Americas. These attributes have both intrigued scientists and made it challenging to study the species, but, with the latest high-speed cameras and other technologies, this program reveals new breakthroughs about these magical birds.
16 Masterpiece: The Durrells in Corfu KET Begins Sunday, Oct. 16 • 8/7 pm KET2 Begins Wednesday, Oct. 19 • 10/9 pm Based on the book trilogy by Gerald Durrell, this charming miniseries stars Keeley Hawes as an intrepid widow who decamps from dreary 1930s England to a sun-dappled Greek island with her four recalcitrant children. There’s Gerry, who’s enchanted with the marvelous animals that populate the island; Margo and Leslie, who seek to cast a spell on members of the opposite sex; Larry, who struggles to produce a novel that someone will publish; and Louisa, who valiantly tries to force her children to get jobs.
18 Tesla: American Experience KET Tuesday, Oct. 18 • 9/8 pm KET2 Sunday, Oct. 23 • 9/8 pm Recently dubbed the “patron saint of geeks,” Nikola Tesla has had electric cars, rock bands, a unit of measurement, a minor planet, and a lunar crater named after him. But eclipsed by contemporaries such as Edison and Marconi, the visionary scientist died impoverished and largely forgotten. During his lifetime, he gained international fame for his invention of a system of alternating current that made possible the distribution of electricity over vast distances and is the basis for the electrical grid that powers 21st century life.
25 Norman Lear: American Masters KET Tuesday, Oct. 25 • 9/8 pm KET2 Sunday, Oct. 30 • 9/8 pm Largely responsible for the explosion of bold American television in the 1970s, the writer/producer’s name is synonymous with the sitcom. This first documentary about the 94-yearold television legend combines stories from his turbulent childhood and early career with his groundbreaking TV successes — All in the Family, The Jeffersons, Good Times, Maude — and social activism. There are also plenty of colorful stories from family, friends, and collaborators, including John Amos, George Clooney, Rob Reiner, Phil Rosenthal, Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, Jon Stewart, and Amy Poehler.
29 Kentucky Collectibles KET Begins Sat., Oct. 29 • 4:30/3:30 pm KET2 Begins Mon., Oct. 31 • 7:30/6:30 pm A priceless piece of American history — a telegram from Martin Luther King Jr. — is featured in the opening program in the new season of KET’s popular series with host Amy Hess. This season, tune in to find out the value of a beautiful ukulele and of a first-edition copy of Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn — purchased at a yard sale for only $4!

‘The McLaughlin Group’ ceases production with death of host
Events planned for Vietnam War documentary
John McLaughlin, host of the public television political roundtable The McLaughlin Group for 34 years, died in August at his home in Virginia. With his death, the program will no longer be produced. Premiering in 1982, the program is widely credited for being the first raucous, fast-paced public affairs discussion roundtable — a genre now commonplace across networks and channels. The program soon became routine viewing not only for public TV viewers but for the power elite in Washington, D.C., as well. In 1985, President Ronald Reagan quipped, “John took a simple Sunday morning discussion format out of the issues of our day and — using the insight, skill, and great humility that have become his trademarks — managed to turn it into a political version of Animal House.”
You are invited to attend events for KET’s new documentary on the Vietnam conflict and its veterans, set to premiere Thursday, Nov. 10 on KET. Kentucky Vietnam Veterans: In their Own Words features interviews with veterans from the Commonwealth, detailing the stories of their experiences, triumphs, and tragedies. The Friends of KET Board and the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs are hosting free screenings to honor the service of Kentucky’s Vietnam War veterans and their families. • Thursday, Nov. 3 — Aviation Museum of Kentucky, Lexington • Monday, Nov. 7 — Kentucky Science Center, Louisville The preview events are free. Make reservations at KET.org/events or call (502) 589-3538. For additional screening dates and locations, check KET.org/events.
Kentucky Collectibles Appraisal Fair
KET School Video Project asks students to focus on Election 2016
In August, KET fans gathered at the 2016 Kentucky Collectibles Appraisal Fair at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center, where hundreds of items were evaluated by experts. Watch for some of these amazing items in the series’ new season beginning later this month. (See story, page 7.)

Each year, as part of the School Video Project, KET challenges students throughout the state to create videos related to a single topic. This fall, our Election 2016 challenge invites students to submit relevant videos, including mock debates; student interviews; and videos about election history, candidate biographies, and important election issues. The KET School Video Project allows Kentucky students to share videos, including student-produced news programs, PSAs, classroom projects, and more. The challenge runs through Nov. 18. Learn more and check out the videos at KET.org/svp.
MORE TO EXPLORE
Spirits, Sparkles & Spurs event raises funds for KET
Spirits, Sparkles & Spurs, the KET Louisville Regional Board’s 19th annual gala, was held in August at Turkey Run Park in Louisville. Honorary chair Marlene Grissom, second from left, was greeted by board chair Sherry Feldpausch, board vice chair Valerie Scott, and Michele Ripley, of KET.
KET Day at the Kentucky State Fair
KET’s Amy Hess, host of Kentucky Collectibles, and Kentucky Life host Doug Flynn were on hand to greet fans in August at the Kentucky State Fair. Daniel Tiger also had plenty of high-fives for young fans throughout the day.

MORE TO EXPLORE
LEARNING
COMES TO LIFE
W
hether it’s online courses for high-school students, help for adults who want to pass their high-school equivalency — or preschoolers making fresh discoveries about the world — KET’s education division supports and helps learners reach their goals. KET strives every day to boost student achievement and support teachers. With technology used in appropriate and innovative ways, we provide effective resources for today’s homes and classrooms. Learn more about how we educate Kentuckians each and every day!
Early childhood We know from research that early childhood development is extremely important. A child’s level of preparedness to enter kindergarten can dramatically impact how well that child does throughout the rest of their formal school years and beyond. While the terrific programs from PBS Kids support whole-child development, KET takes this even further with our Everyday Learning Early Childhood Initiative. Working with our partners, we offer hands-on workshops for educators and child-care providers, along with curriculum toolkits and resources in pre-literacy science, math, the arts, health, and social studies.
In schools PBS LearningMedia is a comprehensive online multimedia learning service for classrooms which is provided free in partnership with the Kentucky Department of Education. As a leading national content producer, KET has developed more than 3,000 PBS LearningMedia resources in science, mathematics, arts, early childhood, and more. Total Kentucky users
topped 454,000 with 2.2 million resources viewed. We also offer rich online courses through our KET Distance Learning service. These courses include Spanish, German, Latin, Mandarin Chinese, and the arts – all available for dual high school/college credit through Morehead State University. And through both the KET Media Lab and our network of education consultants who travel the state, KET provides training and workshops in all of our resources as well as the effective use of technology in the classroom.
For adults Among our resources is KET Fast Forward, an online test-prep system for the GED®, HiSET ®, and TASC tests. The courses include streaming video, interactive activities, practice questions, and assessments. A recent independent evaluation revealed that Fast Forward is highly effective: learners who take all four sections of the GED® test have a pass rate of 90 percent.
What’s next for KET’s educational services? Through CPB/PBS Ready-to-Learn grants, KET will continue working with a wide range of partners in Louisville/Jefferson County and soon expand into Eastern Kentucky to help prepare young children for kindergarten. Activities include parent workshops at community centers and events for at-risk children. We also have several more exciting resources in development for PBS Learning Media. And our commitment to adult learning and workforce development will continue to evolve and expand. |

Kentucky’s Fab Four
H
ere in Kentucky, we often like to say that history is all around us. From Lincoln to Louisville Slugger; from Boone to the birth of bluegrass music. And sometimes that history is even closer than we realize. Growing up, I spent a lot of fun times with my neighbors the McGuire family. I remember the first time I saw the gold records hanging in their home — and later asking my parents if they’d ever heard of The Hilltoppers (of course they had!). As it turned out, Don McGuire had been a member of the quartet from Western Kentucky University that scored 21 top-40 hits in the 1950s, appeared on numerous TV programs, and became nationally and internationally known. However, his celebrity was lost on me at that young age. Don was simply a neighbor and good friend who had nicknames for many of us kids, including me (Shae Diggies!). It wasn’t until a few years ago, when Don’s son, Kreis, ran across and shared a clip of The Hilltoppers performing on The Ed Sullivan Show, that I realized what a unique story this was and how much fun it would be to capture that time in our nation’s musical heritage. Today, The Hilltoppers are not the household name they once were; and Don McGuire, the only surviving member of the band, is celebrating his 85th birthday this month. Nevertheless, they represent an important era in the evolution of what came to be rock ‘n’ roll music, and, as Kentucky author Ed McClanahan says in the new KET documentary premiering this month, “they were The Beatles of their day.” I hope you’ll tune in to enjoy the music and learn more when The Hilltoppers debuts Monday, October 24 at 9/8 pm on KET — and join us on October 10 for the public premiere screening where it all began, on the campus of Western Kentucky University. See page 31 for details. Sincerely,

THEY’RE THE TOPS! Learn story of 1950s Western Kentucky group that topped the charts
In the 1950s, The Hilltoppers was one of America’s most popular singing groups. Their romantic love songs, beautiful harmonies, and youthful enthusiasm captured the hearts of fans around the world. Made up of four men who met at WKU, the group’s first recording, “Trying,” was a smash hit. Over the course of their career, they had 21 songs in the Top 40, musically and culturally bridging a time between the Big Band sound and the arrival of rock ’n’ roll. The KET documentary The Hilltoppers tells their remarkable story, through interviews with the group’s only surviving member and other family members. Also interviewed are Kentucky author Bobbie Ann Mason, who founded The Hilltoppers fan club, and more.
