YEARS
MAKINGHISTORY KET FIRST SIGNED ON THE AIR SEPTEMBER 23, 1968. BUT THE IDEA OF A STATEWIDE EDUCATIONAL TELEVISION NETWORK BEGAN MANY YEARS EARLIER. When O. Leonard Press moved from New England, along with his wife, Lillian, in 1952 to take a position in the University of Kentucky’s Radio Department, television was still a relatively fledgling technology. Still, pioneers like Len Press saw its great potential. During a trip to Eastern Kentucky, Press learned that the rural Lott’s Creek Community School in Cordia received no state funds and lacked accreditation. “Of course, I’m thinking, ‘Wow — if we could get television in there, they could have the courses they need for accreditation!’” Press recalled in a 2011 interview. He came away determined to help address the educational challenges of the area. At that time, all over the nation, people were making the connection between television and education. Here in Kentucky, Press’s idea was not only to improve basic education in the mountains but also to uplift the entire Commonwealth. “Across Kentucky, I saw the heroic struggle to provide equal education thwarted by the barrier of unequal resources,” he said. “It was essential that we harness the power of television to assure the education and enrichment of our people so they would have every possible opportunity. We could not afford to accept less.”
1962 The General Assembly establishes the Kentucky Authority for Educational Television with O. Leonard Press as first executive director.

VISION S
|
Press traveled the state marshalling support for a new television network. He plucked the ear of elected officials, he got educators on his side. In 1962, the General Assembly established the Kentucky Authority for Educational Television and named Press its first executive director. Six years later, after building a system of transmitters and constructing the network headquarters in Lexington, KET began broadcasting. “As we dedicate this network, let us dedicate ourselves to the task of equalizing and expanding learning opportunities for every student in Kentucky,” said Gov. Louie B. Nunn during KET’s dedication ceremony. “Let it stand as a monument to the people of Kentucky, to whom this challenge of greatness most directly addresses itself,” he continued.

Ginni Fox, Len Press, Shae Hopkins
Once established, KET produced and distributed instructional programming statewide. Press hired a cadre of educators to help Kentucky teachers learn how to effectively use educational programs in the classroom. Many innovative services followed: GED preparatory series, distance-learning courses, college telecourses, and more. Along the way, KET also focused on its service to the broader viewership. Coverage of the Kentucky General Assembly launched a year before C-SPAN did the same for Congress. And numerous series and documentaries have captured and celebrated the people and places that make Kentucky special. Reflecting on KET’s history of innovation, Ginni Fox, KET’s second executive director, noted that Press always evaluated projects on the amount of good each would do. “What’s the return on the investment,” Fox said he would ask, “not from the bottom line, profit status — but what is the return in human capital?” Today’s executive director, Shae Hopkins, who worked under Press in her long career at KET, echoes Fox’s sentiments: “We’ve never deviated from KET’s founding mission, and, with the continued support of those we serve, we never will.”

KET has always strived to enrich lives and build stronger communities by educating, informing and inspiring Kentuckians of every age and circumstance. Over the course of 50 years, we have much to be proud of in our pursuit of this goal. And we have many people to thank for making it all possible. So on this special occasion, let me extend my deepest gratitude and appreciation to everyone who has contributed to making KET what it is today. Thank you to the General Assembly and other officials who shared Len Press’s original vision and who have continued to support KET’s mission. Thank you to our funders and partners. Thank you to our boards, Friends and volunteers. Thank you to all the state’s educators. Thank you to the dedicated KET staff, past and present. And, of course, thank you to all the individual supporters and viewers. We have much to celebrate and even more to look forward to thanks to all those who share in KET’s commitment to the Commonwealth. Sincerely,
Shae Hopkins

A Never-Ending
EDUCATIONAL MISSION E
ducation has been at the heart of KET’s mission since its inaugural broadcast 50 years ago. Beyond the programming that viewers see, there is another side of KET that is committed to creating and delivering innovative instructional content. Looking ahead to the next 50 years and beyond, KET will continue focusing its efforts on being an essential resource to Kentuckians, both in homes and in schools, by providing informative and enlightening content across a variety of platforms. We will continue finding new and innovative ways to address the educational needs of the state. We will continue being the place where learning comes to life.
HELPING OUR YOUNGEST CITIZENS
From isolated areas of Eastern Kentucky to pockets of Jefferson County and across the state, the number of Kentucky children who aren’t ready to enter kindergarten can be as high as 90 percent. Overall in Kentucky, about half of the children who enter our schools aren’t ready to begin learning. KET’s early childhood education consultants are in these places, leading families and caregivers in fun, educationally rich workshops that not only help preschoolers get ready for kindergarten, but also provide help for parents to support learning at home. Additionally, KET is providing certified training for preschool teachers and childcare workers.

Kentucky teachers turn to KET resources to engage learners. In fact, KET resources are used in every public school in the state. And face-to-face workshops offered by KET reach thousands more teachers and their students: last year, these workshops reached almost 12,000 teachers and students in 85 percent of Kentucky’s school districts. KET is a leading national partner in PBS LearningMedia, a free resource for teachers. KET has produced more than 3,000 digital resources and is among the top national contributors along with WGBH in Boston and WNET in New York City. Last year, KET resources were streamed more than two million times. This includes KET’s popular and longrunning News Quiz, one of the most-viewed resources in PBS LearningMedia.
TRAINING WORKERS
At KET, we’re addressing workforce issues by providing resources that teach job, academic and life skills. Our successful FastForward adult learning system will continue to be expanded and updated. Currently, 90 percent of students studying with FastForward pass the test and earn a GED® credential. Using the success of the all-online FastForward model, KET is updating Workplace Essential Skills, which teaches necessary skills workers need to become good employees. Molly of Denali

WHERE DO YOU WANT TO BE?
Be in demand. Also, in partnership with the Kentucky Department of Workforce Investment, KET is developing In Demand, a new video series focusing on Kentucky’s high-demand job sectors and careers, in which there are currently thousands of job vacancies. Intended for young adults entering the workforce, adults in career transition and returning veterans, In Demand will create awareness of the career opportunities available in advanced manufacturing, business and IT, construction, healthcare, and transportation and logistics.
NEW PROGRAMS ON THE HORIZON
Of course, viewers will be excited to know that several fascinating new series and specials, from both KET and PBS, will also continue bringing learning to life for everyone. New kid’s programs Let’s Go Luna and Molly of Denali add to the most-trusted lineup in children’s programming. New seasons of fan-favorites Victoria and Finding Your Roots will be coming in 2019, as will the three episodes of Antiques Roadshow that were recorded this year in Louisville. And two forms of uniquely American music are explored in 2019 when KET tells the story of Bluegrass music and Ken Burns chronicles the history of country music.

AN AMAZING FALL SEASON What do books, super cats and Facebook have in common? They’re all part of KET’s exciting new fall season! We’ve been talking about this moment all year: The Great American Read, hosted by Meredith Vieira, culminates in October with the results of the first-ever national vote for America’s best-loved novel. We began with 100 books – tune in to see which book is voted America’s favorite. Also, fan-favorite Doug Flynn Kentucky Life, hosted by Doug Flynn, kicks off season 23 of sharing stories about Kentucky’s people, places and ideas. A new KET documentary, Robert Penn Warren: A Vision, features the Kentucky author and poet most famously known for his novel All the King’s Men. Another season of Frontline starts with “The Facebook Dilemma,” a yearlong investigation revealing how several high-profile problems have led some to wonder whether Facebook creates more harm than good. In a colorful new American Experience, “The Circus” explores the history of this popular American form of entertainment, in an era when its stars were among the most famous people in the world. If you’re looking for spooky, the new fall lineup has that, too. In the new five-part series The Woman in White, a young man encounters a ghostly woman and is drawn into a web of intrigue that will transform his life forever.
