PLORING PBS DIGITAL INNOVATOR USES TECHNOLOGY TO FOSTER CURIOSITY

S

helby County science teacher James Wampler has one wish for his eighth-grade students. “I want my students to explore,” he said. “I want them to ask questions, I want them to chase those answers. I want them to be wise.” Wampler’s exploring nature was fostered early, when as a kid he ventured into the woods near his family’s home, set up a bird blind, and wrote his questions about birds into a little notebook, complete with drawings. “When I was a kid, I was very into science. ‘Let’s go exploring’ is kind of my mantra,” said Wampler, who, in his second year of teaching, now keeps that mantra on the wall of his classroom for his students to emulate. After earning a Master’s in Teaching, he began devoting himself to communicating to students that sense of wonder and exploration he treasures. This year, Wampler’s use of technology to enhance his classroom led him to be chosen as a PBS Digital Innovator, which he explains involves appropriate use of technology so that it augments learning. When deciding on a classroom innovation, Wampler evaluates it in terms of its value as a communication tool and its ability to deliver content in an authentic way. He also judges its affect on organization and its ability to encourage student engagement. Educators, he notes, sometimes fall into the trap of applying a technology that may be really cool, but for no real purpose. “My district is doing a lot of really exciting things and I love it here,” he said, noting that every student has access to a Chromebook and that he himself runs a paperless classroom. “Shelby County encourages us to be bold, and I love how it builds on itself and creates more excitement. And that leads to more ideas. It’s a very positive environment. And that trickles down to the students, and it has a big payoff, if you let it.”

PBS LearningMedia “starts the fire for learning.”

“So I break down technology in those terms,” he continued. “I ask the question: does this technology augment what I’m trying to do in this area or does it distract?” Digital resources provided by PBS and KET provide that positive effect on learning, Wampler adds. “KET resources are definitely in my bag of tricks. I just attended the PBS Digital Innovator conference in Denver. If I have an ‘I need inspiration moment,’ what I’ll do is pull a list of resources and decide what will be helpful.” One of those lessons, he said, is when he and his students study human biology. “When we do our unit of DNA, chromosomes, and alleles, I am able to pull up a lesson on PBS LearningMedia. They do a good job of mixing content with the questions and inquiry. “It’s not overwhelming, it’s not an hour of video,” he added. “It’s quick and it starts the fire for learning.” 3

Documentary recounts life and tragic death of Lexington golfer Marion Miley

S

he was called the “Flower of the Fairway,” the daughter of a golf pro who, from 1936 through 1941, was the best female golfer in America. A household name in her day, her popularity was enhanced in the absence of professional male golfers in those Depression years. Lexington’s Marion Miley was an international celebrity whose youthfulness, athleticism, good looks, and prowess on the links propelled her to numerous amateur regional championships in the years preceding the formation of the LPGA. But it all came to a tragic end in September 1941 when burglars killed Miley and mortally wounded her mother in a robbery at the Lexington Country Club on the eve of America’s involvement in World War II. The nation’s immediate preoccupation with the war caused memories of Miley to quickly fade. Forgotten Fame: The Marion Miley Story traces her 4

childhood as a golf prodigy under the tutelage of her father, her move to Lexington, her success in golf — and her murder at the age of 27, which shocked both her hometown supporters and fans nationwide. “What this gave us the opportunity to do is to really celebrate Marion Miley’s life which, because of her untimely death, was never really acknowledged or recognized,” said Shae Hopkins, KET executive director. “Her achievements got lost in the sensational crime and in the wounded civic pride of a city that lost its hero.” Replete with archival photos and newspaper accounts, Forgotten Fame also contains interviews with Lexingtonians who knew Miley and remember not only her talent, but her kindness and intelligence firsthand. Perspective is also offered by the author of a forthcoming book on Miley as well as a PGA historian, a police historian, and a local history professor.

COVER STORY Forgotten Fame: The Marion Miley Story KET Thursday, Sept. 29 • 8/7 pm KET2 Sunday Oct. 2 • 9/8 pm

“People knew her name from the golf tournament named for her at the Lexington County Club, and many older people remembered her, but that generation is passing away,” said Craig Cornwell, KET’s senior director of programming and executive producer of the film. “This was a way to resurrect her name and importance.” The documentary brings Miley’s story to life with compelling re-enactment segments featuring Transylvania University golfer Lindsay Bloom as Miley. “I found her photo searching through golf teams all over the state,” said producer Beth Kirchner. “We were all on the lookout for someone who looked like Marion. She was great — she had no acting experience whatsoever — and we felt like we needed to represent the quality of golfing first, and she did a really nice job.” Produced utilizing the resources of the Professional Golf Association Museum, Forgotten Fame is able to document

Miley’s extensive match victories in key tournaments in the United States, Canada, and Great Britain, as well as her participation as a member of the 1938 U.S. Curtis Cup team, which plays a British team biennially. Attention is also given to the burglars convicted of killing Miley and her mother, including a reenactment of the crime itself, their trials, and the pre-execution religious conversion of one of the convicted trio. “At its heart, the documentary is the story of a pioneer in women’s sport whose life was cut short before she was able to fulfill her potential,” said Cornwell. “By telling her story we are restoring what was stolen in the crime,” Kirchner added. “Hers is a legacy of courage and achievement and accomplishment that paved the way for future generations.” Forgotten Fame is funded in part by the KET Endowment for Kentucky Productions. Over two dangerous years, they helped to save hundreds of political dissidents and Jewish refugees fleeing the Nazi occupation. Nearly three years before America became involved in World War II, these two unassuming, ordinary Americans gave up everything they knew and loved, and risked their lives to become involved in a war 4,000 miles away because they knew there were people in grave danger who needed help.

27 Frontline The Choice 2016 KET Tuesday, Sept. 27 • 9/8 pm Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are two of the most polarizing presidential candidates in modern history. Frontline investigates what shaped these two candidates, where they came from, how they lead, and why they want to take on one of the most difficult jobs imaginable. This deeply reported narrative arc of both candidates’ lives, side by side, provides powerful new insights at a moment when voters are being bombarded with conflicting partisan stories about each candidate.

You’re invited! Preview events of exciting new programs

KET welcomes teachers to the annual Multimedia Day

Make plans now to attend one of our preview events of upcoming new programs on KET. In partnership with Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill, Frazier History Museum, and Transylvania University, two preview events of the Live From Lincoln Center program “Simple Gifts: The Chamber Music Society at Shaker Village” are scheduled. (See description, page 6.) The events are Tuesday, Sept. 6 at 6 pm at Transylvania University, Lexington, and Thursday, Sept. 8, at 6 pm at the Frazier History Museum, Louisville.

A total of 151 enthusiastic Kentucky educators received expert KET training on the latest teaching technology at the 11th annual KET Multimedia Professional Development Day in July. Among the workshops were hands-on sessions on recording video with digital cameras; the day’s most popular offering, “Going Googly Over Google Education;” the role of small drones in classroom projects; and using Minecraft at the primary level. These last two sessions were streamed as live webcasts — the first time this innovation has been offered at the event. It allowed teachers throughout the state to earn one hour of free professional development credit from home or school.

A screening of Class of ’27: America Reframed, which features Owsley County students and educators and Kentucky author Silas House, will be held at the Berea College Appalachian Center on Wednesday, Sept. 14. Read about the program on page 22. Forgotten Fame: The Marion Miley Story will be presented Wednesday, September 28, 7:30 pm at the Kentucky Theater, Lexington. Read about the documentary in the cover story on page 4. All preview events are free and open to the public, but registration is required at KET.org/events

Join us in Old Louisville for St. James Court Art Show Fine art lovers and KET fans, stop by the welcome tent at St. James Court and Hill Street during the 60th annual Art Show, where KET staff and volunteers will be on hand with information, giveaways, and more. The show is Friday, Sept. 30 through Sunday, Oct. 2. Show hours are 10 am to 6 pm and Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm. 20 VISION S

KET also hosted a booth where educators learned more about PBS Kids and KET’s Everyday Learning project for childcare workers, preschool teachers, parents, and children. The conference, held in July in Louisville, was sponsored by the Governor’s Office of Early Childhood. MORE TO EXPLORE

PBS Spotlights Kentucky Educators striving to make a difference in Owsley County featured nationally

Filmed in the hollows of Appalachia, on native lands of the Upper Midwest and in West Coast migrant camps, Class of ’27: America Reframed, airing Monday, Sept. 19 at 9/8 pm on KET, presents three short films profiling early childhood educators and children, beginning with Owsley County. In Booneville, local employment is largely limited to the school system, and children there have caring and committed adults preparing them for better futures. “I’m getting them ready for kindergarten,” says Betsy Coomer, a tireless early-education teacher with decades of experience. The program also travels to Minnesota and California, demonstrating that children from distressed communities, despite their circumstances, are more likely to grow into productive and civically engaged adults if they receive support in their earliest years. Committed to supporting the children’s potential, each community is a place of hope, inspiration and resilience.

A Partner in Education

F

reshly sharpened pencils, neatly organized notebooks, and smiling faces have arrived in school buildings throughout our Commonwealth. Students and teachers are back to school in Kentucky! With that same energy and excitement, KET is back to school, too, bringing learning to life for educators and learners. KET’s digital learning tools, including innovative STEM resources in physics, middle-school mathematics, and early childhood science, are utilized in all Kentucky school districts. We’re a leading producer and provider of quality educational content — from childcare worker training to online classes in world languages. Our Fast Forward system for GED® test preparation ensures that even those who dropped out have the best opportunity for future success. All of these resources and more can be found at the new KET.org/education. A special week of programs examining today’s education system, Spotlight Education, begins Monday, Sept. 12 at 9/8 pm on KET with our annual College Financial Aid call-in, where a panel of experts explain the options and answer viewer questions. Throughout the week, POV, Frontline, and Nova, among others, examine the challenges and opportunities affecting learning in Kentucky and across our nation. Spotlight Education culminates by shining a light on Kentucky, celebrating early childhood educators in Owsley County striving to make a difference, in Class of ’27: America Reframed, a nationally broadcast film airing Monday, Sept. 19 at 9/8 pm on KET. We’re here to help learners of all ages be successful in school and life — and further opportunities for their families and our communities. Sincerely,
