And they conversed with Green and her sister in Thai, wanting their daughters to learn the family’s native language. Green picked up her second language — English — largely as a result of watching KET. “I credit both Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood and Sesame Street for teaching me English,” she says. “I’d watch all the time, and I really loved how those programs would visit new places. This was long before YouTube, so this was one of the few ways to see the world.” At school, as one of the lone Asian students, Green acknowledges she sometimes “felt like the odd-kid out.” But she had her favorite routines that helped her grow more comfortable with her place in the world — one of which was watching Fred Rogers on Mister Rogers’

presents World on Fire, a new seven-part series from Masterpiece, set during the opening year of World War II. The story follows the intertwining fates of ordinary people grappling with the effects of the war. It’s a gripping and emotional drama, one featuring an all-star cast that includes Academy Award®-winner Helen Hunt (Mad About You), Sean Bean (Game of Thrones) and Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread). The story begins in England, where Douglas Bennett (Bean), a WWI veteran who’s since
turned to pacifism, watches in vain as his country enters the war and his children are pulled into its vortex. Helen Hunt is an American broadcaster, reporting from Warsaw and Berlin, who’s trying to uncover the truth about the Nazi regime. She befriends Harry Chase, the love interest of Bennett’s daughter, and gives him a momentous piece of advice just as Nazi troops converge on the city, leaving no mistake that everything is about to change.
CAN’T WAIT FOR MORE? Stream the entire six-episode series of World on Fire starting the night of the premiere on KET Passport.
ALSO NEW THIS MONTH! Baptiste on Masterpiece Julien Baptiste, the French detective from The Missing, returns in this spinoff crime drama set in Amsterdam that has Baptiste once again investigating the case of a missing girl. The girl’s disappearance appears to be tied to a Romanian sex trafficking ring, but Baptiste soon realizes there’s more to the case than meets the eye. Who is the mysterious figure following his wife? And why is everyone so reluctant to even talk about the missing girl?

Learn-at-home educational materials for kids and adults
KET forum offers families advice for juggling life at home
In response to the need for at-home learning resources while schools and many workplaces are closed due to the COVID-19 outbreak, KET has created an online toolkit for families and is offering free access to its GED ® preparation and workplace instruction courses for adults learners. The kids’ toolkit provides families with educational videos, interactive games and instructional resources all tailored to specific grade levels: PreK-third grade, grades 4-8, and grades 9-12. The toolkit is available at KET.org/learnathome. Adult learners will have free access, through April 30, to KET’s FastForward and Workplace Essential Skills online courses. FastForward prepares users for the GED test and other high-school equivalency exams. And Workplace Essential Skills offers instruction on the language and math skills needed to succeed in many of Kentucky’s high-demand career fields, such as IT, construction and marketing. Learn more at KET.org/adulted.
With the onset of COVID-19, families across Kentucky are grappling with a new reality—how to balance work, childcare, and self-care needs. Extended school closures have moved academics from the classroom to the living room, leaving caregivers to adjust. Hosted by KET’s Renee Shaw, this live forum will bring experts from education and healthcare fields together to answer questions and share practical advice and resources for families.
Members of the student news team at E.P. Ward Elementary in Fleming County showed off their new media arts production kit, courtesy of KET. Schools that attend workshops in the KET Media Lab in Lexington during the 2019-2020 school year receive the production kit to help them outfit a media lab in their school. The production kits, which were provided by The Virginia Clark Hagan Charitable Foundation, Inc., include a KET Media Arts Tookit, a green screen, microphone, tripod and more.

THANKS! KET thanks you for your continued support Thanks to our donors, sponsors and volunteers, KET’s on-air fundraiser helps ensure that PBS programming — which costs $3 million annually — stays strong. Donations are still being accepted at KET.org/donate or (800) 866-0366. KET’s Michele Ripley thanks Drs. Mina and Gopal Majmundar for their matching challenge grant of $10,000 in support of TeleFund. Dr. Mina Majmundar’s daughter Dr. Mamata Majmundar serves as president of the Lexington Medical Society and together with CEO Chris Hickey volunteered on a phone bank. Kentucky Life host Doug Flynn enjoyed a spirited evening with volunteers from Alltech, a TeleFund sponsor.

MORE TO EXPLORE
Learn the remarkable story of the first black football player at UK Black in Blue, a featurelength documentary directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Paul Wagner, tells a remarkable story of racial progress. In the fall of 1967, Nate Northington was the first AfricanAmerican football player in the Southeastern Conference to break the color line, playing with the University of Kentucky team.
