SPOTLIGHTING THE ARTS

I

n 1993, Everett McCorvey, at the time an assistant professor of voice at the University of Kentucky, and a colleague seized on an idea to create a new musical revue to showcase his students’ performing talents. They called the revue It’s a Grand Night For Singing!. And the show’s opening, which had to be delayed by 20 minutes to accommodate the crowd that had swelled for tickets, proved to be a harbinger of the good things to come. For its 25th anniversary in 2017, Grand Night was produced for broadcast by KET and ultimately broadcast on PBS stations nationwide, drawing rave reviews and earning two regional Emmys in the process. McCorvey, who now serves as the director of the UK Opera Theatre, credits the KET production — and the reach of public television — for its role in helping bring nationwide attention to the UK Opera program and its performers. “For many artists, exposure is their passport,” McCorvey said. “And that’s the beauty of KET, because we’re now shown in markets all over the country, which has proven to be a tremendous boon for both the UK Opera program and our students. I receive so many letters and emails from people all across the country saying they’ve enjoyed watching It’s a Grand Night.” McCorvey and his wife, Alicia, also a professional singer, both say public television was formative to their childhoods. Growing up in an opera and theater-loving family in Brooklyn, Alicia watched musical performances on the local public television channel, which she says validated her desire to pursue a career in the arts. For Everett, who grew up in Montgomery, Ala., during the height of the Civil Rights movement, public television 2

likewise offered validation, if of a different sort. He recalled one summer when local officials, on order to desegregate public facilities, opted to pave over and close his neighborhood’s pool rather than open it to Blacks. At that time on Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, however, he watched as Fred Rogers shared his plastic wading pool with Officer Clemmons, a Black character, together cooling their bare feet in the water. “It was two people sharing a kiddie pool, and it wasn’t a big deal,” Everett said. “It was a different narrative than the one I was seeing in Montgomery, one that was welcoming and open. It was powerful, and it’s something I’ll never forget.” The McCorveys, who met in New York on the cast of the musical Porgy and Bess, moved to Lexington in 1991. As their family grew to include three children, they said they were happy to have KET to share with their kids, who adored watching Sesame Street, Arthur and Barney & Friends. “KET has been in our home ever since we arrived here,” Alicia said. “We feel our children learned a lot

from watching its programs, which offer a kindness and an educational experience that you don’t find in the same way on commercial television.” They’ve likewise lent their singing talents to numerous KET pledge drives and appeared on several KET productions, including a 2001 performance of It’s a Grand Night For Singing! on the program In Performance at the Governor’s Mansion and on American Spiritual Ensemble, a series Everett helped create to celebrate the spiritual song as an art form. The McCorveys said they’re happy to support KET however they can because they appreciate the variety of arts programming that KET routinely airs, programs such as Live From Lincoln Center, Great Performances and Kentucky Life, which frequently spotlights local artists. “KET introduces the arts to so many people in so many different ways,” Everett said. “It’s great because it opens up a world of possibilities. And people don’t have to leave the comfort of their living room — although after the year we’ve had, they’re probably ready.”

Viewers count on KET to provide frontrow seats to a wide variety of concerts, musicals and plays, as well as unprecedented access to art and artists around the globe. We’re pleased to present you and your family the opportunity to experience performances, artists and works of art that you might not otherwise be able to see. How extraordinary that anyone from Paducah to Pikeville can enjoy a play on Broadway, the masterpieces of the Louvre or an opera in Sydney, while also exploring the remarkable lives of creative geniuses like Ernest Hemingway. With an unwavering belief in the power of creativity, KET has a long tradition of showcasing talented Kentucky artists and makers as well, including Everett and Alicia McCorvey, Dale Leys, Merle Travis, Wendy Whelan, Bobbie Ann Mason, Harry Pickens and many others. An upcoming documentary will spotlight writer Walter Tevis, whose Lexington-based novel The Queen’s Gambit was made into a popular Netflix series. KET’s commitment to the arts also extends to arts education and our award-winning Arts Tool Kits, as well as other engaging classroom resources used by students across Kentucky and the nation. A year into this pandemic that has shuttered so many arts venues, KET continues to bring concerts, dramas, artists, writers and more into your home. As we all look forward to better days ahead, we thank you for watching and for your support that helps make it all possible. Sincerely,

Shae Hopkins

KET Executive Director and CEO

THE EXTRAORDINARY LIFE OF

ERNEST

HEMINGWAY Ernest Hemingway, the iconic

literary figure considered a seminal American writer, is the subject of the new documentary series Hemingway, directed by award-winning filmmakers Ken Burns and Lynn Novick.

4

VISION S

|

A P R I L 2021

The six-hour film, told in two-hour segments over three consecutive evenings, paints an intimate picture of the writer who captured the complexities of the human condition with signature style and spare, profound prose. The film also explores the Hemingway mystique, revealing a deeply troubled and ultimately tragic figure whose story orbits the precarious intersection of art, fame and celebrity.

The documentary follows Hemingway’s rise and weaves together biographical events, excerpts from his work and interviews with celebrated writers and scholars as well as Hemingway’s son Patrick. The film also details the painstaking process through which Hemingway created some of the most important works of fiction in American letters including the novels The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms, For Whom the Bell Tolls and The Old Man and the Sea. Narrated by long-time Burns collaborator Peter Coyote, the film features an all-star cast of actors bringing Hemingway (voiced by Jeff Daniels), his friends and family to life. Through letters to and from his four wives—voiced by Meryl Streep, Keri Russell, Mary-Louise Parker and Patricia Clarkson—the film reveals Hemingway at his most romantic and his most vulnerable, grappling at times with insecurity, anxiety and existential loneliness. “Our intent,” Burns said, “is to offer viewers an honest portrayal of a complex and conflicted writer who left an indelible mark on literature.” On the night of its premiere, Hemingway also will be available for viewing in its entirety on KET Passport. A few weeks after receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis, Sacks sat for a series of interviews, talking about his life’s work and his sense of wonder about the human brain. Skills on Demand offers real-world instructional lessons for students Most teachers have heard from students some version of the question: “When am I ever going to use this?” KET’s free resource Skills on Demand, aimed primarily at students in grades 6-12, is designed to help answer it by using real-world examples. This collection of more than 30 math and language arts resources offers high-quality instructional videos and lessons, touching on math subjects such as geometry, averages, fractions and formulas as well as language arts topics such as rhetorical devices, paragraph structure and editing. Workers from a variety of career pathways explain how they use the relevant skills in their jobs. For example, a realtor explains how she calculates the square footage of a home in order to price it and a chef details how he works with fractions to make recipes larger. Teachers say it’s proving to be a popular approach, amassing more than 20,000 views in just a few months. For more info, visit KET.org/SkillsOnDemand.

A PR I L 2021

Parents and children participate in a 2019 RTL event hosted by KET in Louisville.

KET selected for new Ready To Learn initiative KET was among 12 PBS stations recently selected to participate in a new federal education project that aims to help young children build the vital skills they need to succeed in school and life. The Learn Together: Connecting Children’s Media and Learning Environments to Build Key Skills for Success initiative will help create new educational content and hold local community engagement events that foster children’s literacy, critical thinking and collaboration skills. Stations participating in the initial phase of the five-year plan will work with community partners to develop educational content on a variety of platforms to meet the early learning needs of children, particularly those in low-income communities. One of the key components will include real-life examples of career pathways, with adult role models offering examples of how they turned their childhood interests into their life’s work. Given the rapidly evolving global economy, the initiative seeks to introduce children to the mindsets, knowledge and skills that will help them successfully find their way, even in the face of an uncertain future. The project is spearheaded by PBS and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) and funded through a Ready To Learn grant from the U.S. Department of Education. KET has participated in previous cycles of the Ready To Learn initiative, resulting in the development of a variety of engaging early learning resources as well as numerous community events, primarily focused in Louisville and Eastern Kentucky.

TeleFund might have looked different this year, but our celebration of community continued to inspire. As a pioneer of crowdfunding, we thank the following organizations for virtually supporting KET with sponsorships, fun selfies, social media posts and team fundraising. Donations are still possible at KET.org/donate or (800) 866-0366. Dr. Mark Lyons (center) and Deirdre Lyons (right) of Alltech, a TeleFund sponsor, are joined by Debbie Spinney, widow of the late Caroll Spinney, the original Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch actor.

Volunteers with TeleFund sponsor Kentucky American Water and their families celebrated all the ways KET encourages our littlest learners. Shane Crow and his children — Ziah, Malcolm, Mekhi and Auri — show their virtual support for KET.

Sam Mitchell, CEO of Valvoline, joined KET’s Michele Ripley to celebrate the founding partnership between Valvoline’s prior parent company, Ashland Inc., and KET. One of our longest-serving volunteer groups, Valvoline has participated in Telefund for 41 years.
