MAKING A DIFFERENCE
NAVIGATING CHILDHOOD
ADVENTURES W
hen unidentified paw prints were discovered in the backyard of Brittany Robinson’s Louisville home, her son, Mason, eagerly took up the case. “He grabbed a pen and pad and even carried a walkie-talkie out there,” Robinson said. “It was a big investigation. He was determined to figure out whose dog had been in our backyard.” The clues ultimately pointed to an oversized cat, but Robinson nonetheless was left impressed by her son’s industriousness. His zeal for exploration, she said, is nurtured by KET and his love of the PBS KIDS program Odd Squad. “Odd Squad is his favorite because he gets caught up in the investigations they do and it helps him use his imagination,” Robinson said. “It makes me happy because the characters use a lot of descriptive words, so I see him problem solving in a way that not many 6-year-olds do.” Robinson said she too was a child raised on KET, watching programs such as Arthur, Sesame Street and Reading Rainbow, which she credits for helping her overcome her childhood aversion to reading. And she’s

tickled to see that her son likewise gravitates to KET’s educational programming. “It’s really hard to monitor everything that kids watch,” Robinson said. “So it feels good as a parent knowing I can trust KET and PBS programs, and that he can do something he loves, like watch TV, and still be learning.” Research shows just how important the early years in a child’s life are. By age five, a child’s brain will have reached 90 percent of its development, making this a critical period for building foundational cognitive and social-emotional skills that kids will need to be lifelong learners. PBS KIDS programs such as Odd Squad and Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood continue the PBS tradition of high-quality, research-based educational content that covers the full range of a child’s development, which explains why parents repeatedly rank PBS KIDS as one of the most trusted and relied upon brand for school readiness. A 2015 study by WestEd found that first-graders who regularly watched Odd Squad and engaged with its educational activities reported a greater interest in and knowledge of mathematics than their peers and showed significant
improvement on math test scores. Mason’s kindergarten year of school, Robinson said, was passed mostly through distance learning, which she feared might stunt his social development as he wasn’t around other kids. But she took some relief that many of the PBS KIDS programs he enjoys, such as Arthur and Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, address children’s social and emotional growth, helping them understand their own feelings and learn to work together with other children and adults. “I love that KET programs are about real life and help put things like friendships and honesty into perspective,” Robinson said. “I’m so proud of how Mason has done with his peers. His teacher mentioned that he’s able to be friends with everyone. As a parent, that’s always nice to hear.”
I LOVE THAT KET PROGRAMS ARE ABOUT REAL LIFE AND HELP PUT THINGS LIKE FRIENDSHIPS AND HONESTY INTO PERSPECTIVE.

TODAY’S KET For more than 50 years, KET has been the preeminent source for programs featuring Kentucky’s extraordinary people and places, as well as our rich history and heritage. Topics have ranged from the Underground Railroad, Thoroughbred horses and the Frontier Nursing Service, to musical group The Hilltoppers and the full history of Bluegrass music – just to name a few! This month marks the return of the popular and award-winning series Kentucky Life. Join us as new episodes share more of the fascinating stories that make our state so special. Also this month, the KET series The Farmer & the Foodie kicks off a new season that takes a farm-to-table approach, featuring regional food, recipes, and the people and places that help provide the ingredients for these delicious dishes. And coming next month, The Pack Horse Librarians of Appalachia tells the story of a Great Depression project to deliver books, by horseback, to remote areas. At KET, we work every day to capture stories that celebrate our Commonwealth. We’re pleased that many times these programs are also seen by viewers on PBS stations across the country and often the content is repurposed as engaging educational material for students learning about our state’s history. We thank you for watching and supporting the many programs that help connect us all. All the very best,
Shae Hopkins KET Executive Director and CEO
COVER STORY LINDSEY FOODIE
MAGGIE FARMER
Explore Kentucky’s Food Traditions with
‘The Farmer & The Foodie’ Get to know the food grown by Kentucky farmers and celebrate the Commonwealth’s diverse food traditions with The Farmer & The Foodie. The program is hosted by Maggie Keith, owner and operator of Foxhollow Farm and a passionate advocate for Kentucky farmland, and Lindsey McClave, a food and wine writer and self-taught home cook with a knack for creating original recipes with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. The two friends travel the far reaches of the state, where they draw inspiration from the farms, ingredients and people they encounter. Then, they use what they’ve learned, bringing it into the kitchen to create delicious and approachable recipes. For this new season, Maggie and Lindsey visited more than 20 Kentucky farmers and crafted 30 original recipes. Along the way, they explore natural ways of raising chickens, visit an urban farm in South Louisville, tour the Jeptha Creed and Maker’s Mark distilleries, and drop by Kentucky State University, where they learn about the pawpaw, Kentucky’s native tropical fruit.

Spatchcock Chicken with Asparagus
Serves 2-3 • 1 whole chicken, 3-4lbs • 6 tbs unsalted butter at room temperature • 1lb fresh asparagus, ends trimmed • kosher salt • black pepper • olive oil Instructions: Preheat cast iron skillet to 400° in oven. Pat chicken dry, trim excess skin, and set on a cutting board, breast side down. Using sharp scissors, cut along backbone to the neck, removing the backbone. Turn breast-side up and press down firmly along the center of the breasts, cracking the breastbone and flattening the chicken as much as possible. At top of each breast and thigh, use fingers to gently separate the skin from the meat, creating a little pocket. Place 1 tbsp of butter inside each pocket and massage the exterior to spread butter beneath the skin. Rub 2 tbsp of butter over exterior of the bird and season liberally with salt and pepper. Transfer chicken to preheated skillet, skin side down, ensuring as much of the skin is in contact with the skillet as possible. Season underside of bird with salt and pepper and drizzle with olive oil. Roast for 40 minutes in oven. Flip chicken, skin side up, and roast for an additional 10 minutes. Remove from oven and let rest for 10 minutes before carving. While chicken is resting, add asparagus directly to the hot skillet and toss to coat in the drippings. Return to 400° oven and roast for 10-15 minutes, until tender and beginning to brown. Find the recipes from The Farmer & The Foodie and dates for upcoming screening events at KET.org/farmer-and-foodie.
Celebrate our state with a new season of ‘Kentucky Life’ Kentucky Life returns this month with a new season of episodes. Join host Doug Flynn as he treks the Commonwealth, visiting some of Kentucky’s most interesting people and places. This season, Doug visits the soapbox derby races in Madisonville and Owensboro, marvels at a “Post-It Note Picasso” in Letcher County, meets a husband-and-wife blacksmith team in Lawrenceburg, delves into the historic story of a famous Black composer from Lexington, and grabs a table at a café for cats in Louisville.

The fan-favorite drama inspired by Jane Austen’s final, unfinished novel is back! After the first season’s finale left viewers hanging in suspense, the story continues with its high-spirited heroine, Charlotte Heywood, returning to the picturesque coastal resort of Sanditon and the companionship of her friend Georgiana Lambe. What adventures, scandals, intrigue and above all else — romance — await Miss Heywood this season?
This program offers an intimate portrait of three women, all with mothers afflicted by Alzheimer’s, who have witnessed firsthand the devastation wrought by the disease. The women participate in a groundbreaking study that seeks ways to prevent the disease. And their stories reveal how Alzheimer’s is battled on many fronts: in a laboratory, in a home, in a marriage, in a mind, and in one’s hopes and fears about the future.

Vast, wild and untouched, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) is where some of the world’s greatest wildlife spectacles unfold. Situated in the northeastern corner of Alaska, this refuge is the wildest place left in North America. For five years, photographer and cinematographer Florian Schultz has lived here, tracking the porcupine caribou herd on the longest land animal migration on Earth, and witnessing extraordinary wildlife moments along the way.
Everyone’s favorite appraisal program is back with a pair of new episodes! Join Antiques Roadshow as it visits The Grounds For Sculpture in Hamilton Township, New Jersey. Finds include a Chinese imperial celadon charger, a 1968 “Yellow Submarine” animation cel and a Harry Bertoia sonambient sculpture. Also a $30 yard sale purchase that then hung in a guest’s studio for years turns out to be a sculpture by a major contemporary artist valued at $100,000!

Merlin Holland, grandson of Oscar Wilde, tells the epic story of the famous playwright’s courtroom duel and downfall at the hands of an attorney who Wilde once called an “old friend.” In 1895, Wilde fought a spectacular duel in court with his fellow Irishman Edward Carson, marking one of the most scandalous trials of the Victorian era. Wilde, the prosecutor, was turned into the defendant by Carson’s relentless cross examination, which ultimately led to Wilde’s ruin and imprisonment for homosexuality.

Commonwealth Fund adds new member KET’s statewide Commonwealth Fund Board recently welcomed a new member: Alice Houston of Louisville. Houston and her husband, Wade, are the co-founders of HJI Supply Chain Solutions, the largest minority-owned transportation company in North America.
A bust honoring the service of KET’s founder and first executive director O. Leonard Press was recently installed in the Network Center. Pictured with the bronze sculpture, created by Edward T. Breathitt III, are Len’s son, Lowell Press, and KET CEO Shae Hopkins. Many thanks to Len’s friends who helped make the memorial possible, including Gene and Donna Moore Campbell, Marta and Lowell Ferguson, Virginia and the late Victor Fox, Betty Gabehart, Diana Taylor and Charles R. Gray, Jim and Pat Host, Charles L. and Joanne J. Owen, Lowell and Sasha Press, Martha Helen and the late Albert P. Smith, Drs. Jerry Suhl and Sylvia Cerel-Suhl & family, Leonard and Judy Tipton, Sid and Esther Webb, Sandra Welch, and Bill and Margie Wilson. KET’s 23rd annual fundraising gala in Louisville, February Fanfare, was a great success thanks to the generous contributions of honorary chairs Jim and Missy Allen, KET’s Greater Louisville Fund Board and so many others. “Roaring with KET” at The Olmsted featured flappers, fedoras and all the other stylings of the 1920s. In photo above, board member Tonja Aaron-Wells (left) joined fellow member Sherry Feldpausch (right), Sherry’s husband Joseph and daughter Elizabeth.

MORE TO EXPLORE
Traveling exhibit of musical instruments captures the horrors of the Holocaust The Violins of Hope – a collection of more than 50 restored instruments played by Jewish musicians during the Holocaust – have survived concentration camps, pogroms and many long journeys. They also traveled the world as an exhibit, giving voice to the horrors of the Holocaust and telling remarkable stories of injustice, suffering, resilience and survival. This local independent film tells the story of The Violins of Hope’s arrival in Louisville in the fall of 2019 and the impact the exhibit had on students from Floyd County High School during their visit to the Frazier History Museum.
