ONTANA LEIGERS loved watching Sesame Street on KET as a child. But it wasn’t until last year, when she took part in a national research contest, that she fully appreciated what a groundbreaking force the program was for children’s television. “Sesame Street really did change history,” said Leigers, a homeschooled 17-year-old from Richmond. “It was the first children’s program to use research about how children learn and grow more comfortable with the world around them.” Arriving in 1969 at a tumultuous time in American history, Sesame Street was billed as something of an experiment. TVs could be found in almost every home, but the programs were largely devoid of educational content, prompting one former FCC chairman to call television a “vast wasteland.” Sesame Street initially sought to answer a single question, said Joan Ganz Cooney, one of its founders: Could a program take the addictive qualities of television and do something good with them to address the “educational deficit that poverty created” and help prepare less advantaged children for school? From the start, Sesame Street made clear its message of inclusion
and representation. The program summer, she was thrilled to learn she featured a diverse, multi-racial cast. placed in the top ten nationally. Sesame Street
The fondness that viewers of all ages have for Sesame Street is a testament to its enduring connection and impact. The beloved series proved the radical idea that welldesigned educational programs could help educate and prepare our youngest citizens for success. Today, programs like the popular Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood and Odd Squad carry on this tradition with high-quality educational content that covers the full range of development, from social-emotional learning to math, science and other essential skills. This contributes to a foundation of learning that study after study has shown to positively affect children’s readiness for entering school. For instance, kids who watched Super Why! scored 46% higher on standardized literacy tests than those who did not. Plus, parents repeatedly rank PBS KIDS as the most trusted and relied upon brand for school readiness. Equally important to the quality is the ability to access these programs. Across the country, PBS stations reach more Hispanic, African American, Asian American and Native American preschool-aged children than any television network, as well as more children in low-income homes. In Kentucky, this is especially important as just barely half of all pre-school children are ready to enter kindergarten. We’re committed to our belief that every child is deserving of opportunity. Through PBS KIDS programs and our vast array of early childhood and other instructional resources, KET is helping to make a positive difference in lives of our children and all Kentuckians. Sincerely,
Shae Hopkins

‘Big Family: The Story of Bluegrass Music’ receives national recognition KET’s 2019 production Big Family: The Story of Bluegrass Music recently received a Gold Telly Award. The Telly Awards are the premier award honoring video and television across all screens, and The Gold Telly Award is the organization’s highest marker for excellence (Ken Burns’ Country Music earned one, too!). “We’re so thankful for this acknowledgment from The Telly Awards,” said Shae Hopkins, KET executive director and CEO. “Big Family was an incredible project for KET to be able to produce, and we’re proud of this recognition.” In addition, Big Family was recently acknowledged by The Gabriel Awards with an honorable mention. The Gabriel Awards are presented by the Catholic Press Association of the United States and Canada. Big Family is available for streaming on KET Passport.
PBS programs receive more Peabody Awards than any other organization Among the recent winners of Peabody Awards are Molly of Denali, Frontline, Independent Lens and POV, which was honored with a total of four awards in the documentary category. Molly of Denali, the first nationally distributed children’s series with an Alaska Native lead character, won in the children’s and youth category. Frontline was awarded the prestigious Institutional Award in recognition of its robust output of films with a diversity of filmmakers as well as its efforts in digital media. Frontline also received a Peabody in the documentary category for the Academy Award-nominated For Sama, in which a young woman kept her camera rolling during a time of conflict and darkness in her home in Syria. Frontline, Independent Lens and POV are available for streaming at KET.org/programs and on the PBS video app. Molly of Denali can be streamed at KET.org/kids and on the PBS KIDS video app.
