BIOLOGIST KESSLER SAYS KET BRINGS BIODIVERSITY HOME TO KENTUCKIANS

Dr. Richie Kessler

December 2013

I

n late fall in Kentucky, there’s an almost otherworldly quality to the light as it slants across the landscape, vividly illuminating all it touches. The dying leaves set trees aflame in red and gold color, and the diversity of plant and animal life in the Commonwealth is on spectacular display. This world, in any season, is one that Dr. Richie Kessler, a biology professor at Campbellsville University, knows intimately. His passion for conservation biology began early, growing up in Greensburg, as he drank in the abundance of life in the Green River area. “I grew up surrounded by nature, probably taking that childhood for granted,” said Kessler, who also serves as chair of the Kentucky Heritage Land Conservation Fund, which provides funding for preserving and conserving important natural areas around the state. For a time, Kessler served as a conservation program director for the Green River — what he calls his “home river” — with the Nature Conservancy. And today, as he trains new student biologists at the university level, he also assists KET in its mission to explain the state’s biodiversity to a much wider audience via programs such as Kentucky Life. “Myself, and other biologists and conservationists, we feel like we’re somewhat familiar with what makes

Kentucky such a special place,” he said. “But to have a show that can go from east to west, north to south, and put on display all the wonderful natural treasures that our state has to offer just made me proud as a citizen of Kentucky.” Kessler has worked with Kentucky Life producers on a number of programs, most notably the special Kentucky’s Last Great Places. In it, Kessler and fellow Greensburg native and Kentucky Life host Dave Shuffett explored the unique geography of the Green River area, bringing their enthusiasm for the richness of the place to others.

many reasons, as it has done in several Kentucky Life segments on Heritage Land Conservation Fund project sites. “These sites are so varied, and they do cross the breadth of our state’s diversity of places. But they’re also important … not just because they’re neat natural areas, but because they seem to form a nexus where culture, history, and nature intersect.” One such area is Tebb’s Bend, Kessler said, which features aquatic life found nowhere else in the world, in addition to an abundance of blue heron, eagles, wood ducks, and songbirds. It was also, he notes, an important Civil War site.

“To have a show that can go from east to west, north to south, and put on display all the wonderful natural treasures that our state has to offer just made me proud as a citizen of Kentucky.” “Kentucky is the land of rivers — more miles of navigable streams than any state besides Alaska. We’re also a land of caves. That Last Great Places segment, I felt like, represented this landscape of south-central Kentucky in a way that I don’t care where you’re from, you’d have to step back and say, ‘Wow, what a special region,’” he said. It’s particularly gratifying, Kessler said, when KET can showcase a place in Kentucky that is important for

“Where else but KET can you turn on the TV and see a program about something so unique to Kentucky that so few people yet know about — and have that information communicated by experts in the field yet be so accessible?” he asked. “It comes across in such a way,” he added, “that the average citizen can develop a new appreciation for these amazing natural treasures of Kentucky.”

PAT CONROY DISCUSSES REAL ‘GREAT SANTINI’ IN NEW MEMOIR AT KENTUCKY CENTER

S

outh Carolina author Pat Conroy has plumbed the depths of family dysfunction in numerous novels, including The Prince of Tides and The Great Santini. Conroy discusses his powerful new memoir, The Death of Santini, the further story of his father who inspired the acclaimed novel, with NPR’s Maureen Corrigan in the next Great Conversations airing Monday, Dec. 16 at 10/9 pm on KET. The memoir details Conroy’s father’s efforts to make amends for the early abuse which has haunted most of Conroy’s novels. “I’ve been writing the story of my own life for over 40 years,” the memoir begins. With great but often poignant humor, Conroy talks about his life and work, including his parents’ and brothers and sisters’ sometimes angry, often sardonic reaction to his making their family life the lightly veiled subject of his fictional works. His father, for example, claimed he “made” Robert Duvall’s career; Duvall played him in the movie The Great Santini.

KET (24/7) KET’s primary broadcast service in HD KET2 (24/7) Expanded offerings of popular programming KET KY (24/7) Kentucky programming

In the program, Conroy explores his relationship with his parents, particularly his father, who never once told his son he loved him; caring for his parents as they died; and perhaps being able to put his obsession with them and his troubled upbringing to rest with the writing of his current book. Great Conversations: Pat Conroy and Maureen Corrigan also airs Sunday, Dec. 15 at 10/9 am on the Kentucky Channel and Thursday, Dec. 19 at 3/2 pm on KET2.

Alice Sparks’ philanthropy a model for today and for the future As a leader in business, education, and politics, Alice Sparks of Ft. Mitchell has left her mark on Kentucky. “I want to make my community a better place by giving back,” said Sparks, the widow of D. Joseph Sparks, a mother of two, and a grandmother of three. A gift to KET at year-end can provide you, like Sparks, with a feeling of personal satisfaction and demonstrates your belief in offering opportunities for all people to keep learning throughout their lives. It may also result in desirable tax benefits. Most of us want to be in a financial position to do more for those who need our support. Our government’s tax laws offer incentives that encourage support of the works and dreams of organizations and institutions that are making a difference in the world. Through careful planning, a year-end gift can allow you to do more for others than you may have anticipated and still improve your own position, both today and tomorrow. Sparks has also included KET in her will to help ensure this vital part of her life and community is continued for generations to come. As 2013 draws to a close, we invite you to explore KET.org to learn more about how our work benefits more than 1 million Kentuckians daily. Then consider a year-end gift as well as making KET part of your lasting legacy.
