CELEBRATES

25 YEARS DURING WINTERPLEDGE

T

imes may change, but KET remains steadfast in its mission: To enrich lives and build stronger communities by educating, informing and inspiring Kentuckians of every age and circumstance. It’s a mission that makes a difference throughout the Commonwealth — whether in a household, a classroom or a community. “Kids don’t typically have a lot of role models for scientists and engineers. But KET, through its programming and school services, provides incredible exposure to those STEM fields for students. It’s an invaluable resource.” — BEN MALPHRUS Director of the Space Science Center at Morehead State University

“From its work with early childhood education to its teacher development and resources for K-12, KET has been the bedrock of education in the Commonwealth. It’s a wonderful partnership, not just for the cabinet, but for the entire state of Kentucky.” — DERRICK RAMSEY Secretary of Education and Workforce Development

“KET is an educational resource in so many ways — and education, at least to me, is the answer to so much of life and what we can accomplish. It plays a large role in determining how far we can go.” — ISABEL YATES Former member of the Lexington City Council, and the first chair of KET’s Summer Celebration fundraiser

“If you want to know and hear about Kentucky — and to really know what’s going on in your state — there’s no better way to find out about it than from KET. There’s so much great programming that we love to watch.” — SHERRY FELDPAUSCH Trust administrator at The Glenview Trust Company and former chair of KET’s Greater Louisville Regional Fund Board

“KET has a cadre of staff and consultants who go out and work with teachers, making them aware of the electronic content that’s out there and teaching them how to maximize that content in their instruction.” — DAVID COUCH Chief information officer and associate commissioner at the Kentucky Department of Education

“KET is excellent at creating an atmosphere where all Kentuckians can come together and have a conversation about how we can create our own future.” — DAVID ADKISSON Former president and CEO of the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce

From the national debut of Big Family: The Story of Bluegrass Music that garnered such a wonderful viewer response to the celebration of Kentucky Life’s 25 years sharing the people, places and stories of our beautiful state – it’s been an especially gratifying year. In addition to Kentucky Tonight, our forum series explored topics of importance to Kentuckians, including school safety, major health risks and more. We also provided unparalleled access to your government through live streaming of the General Assembly and Kentucky Supreme Court, as well as candidate and election coverage. And it was another banner year of popular national programs that included a celebration of Fred Rogers, Country Music, and the final season of Poldark. Additionally, education remained at the forefront of our services, including the launch of the new early childhood service Bright By Text. In classrooms, News Quiz was one of the top nationally-utilized resources on PBS LearningMedia. For adult learners, an initiative to make FastForward accessible in corrections facilities launched, the remake of Workplace Essential Skills continued and a collection of highly touted career pathways videos debuted. It’s your continued support and viewership that provides the ultimate affirmation of this work. We’re honored to have served you, your family and every Kentuckian throughout the year. During this holiday season, we want to express our appreciation and to wish you and your family a wonderful new year filled with kindness and goodwill. Sincerely,

Shae Hopkins

25 YEARS of Kentucky stories Kentucky Life, one of KET’s

most beloved and celebrated programs, has served as a time capsule of life in the Commonwealth, chronicling Kentucky’s most interesting stories for 25 years. To celebrate the quarter-century milestone – and to kick off WinterPledge – KET presents a Kentucky Life anniversary special that takes a look back at some of the show’s most memorable

segments. The program includes interviews with host Doug Flynn and former hosts Byron Crawford and Dave Shuffett, who share their favorite memories and talk about their role in shaping one of KET’s longest-running series. “I still get stopped on the street by people who recognize me from my Kentucky Life days,” Byron said. “And I think it’s a great tribute to the show – it validates that we were in fact doing something good and showing Kentucky at its best.” The program also explores many of Kentucky’s wonders: its musical

legacy, its iconic covered bridges and general stores, and its natural beauties, such as the state’s network of caves and waterways. “That’s one of the cool things about Kentucky Life,” Doug said. “I love the fact that I’m learning right along with the people at home watching the program.” So come along with Doug, Dave and Byron to relive some of the series’ most fascinating stories. It’s the perfect start to WinterPledge, which offers viewers a chance to help ensure that KET is able to deliver quality programming all year long. BYRON CRAWFORD Host from 1995-1999

Hometown Lincoln County farm outside Stanford Favorite Kentucky Life segment “The one that comes back to me was about kudzu in eastern Kentucky and how it couldn’t be contained, gobbling up everything around.” Favorite quote “The older I get the easier it is to say, ‘I don’t know.’” Idea of a perfect day “My idea of a perfect day in Kentucky would have me sitting beside a peaceful stream or walking through a nice meadow off a wooded trail. There also are a number of roads in Kentucky that I love to traverse, such as U.S. Route 68.”

DAVE SHUFFETT Host from 1999-2015

Hometown Greensburg in Green County Favorite Kentucky Life segment “We did a piece on Mrs. Lera Williams from Campbellsville, who was the oldest living Kentuckian. She was 110 years old – she lived to 111 – and, at that time, she was the 66th oldest living person in the world. And she was as sharp as a tack.” Favorite quote “Always look up to the audience, not down.” Idea of a perfect day “A trip to one of Kentucky’s wilderness preserves, such as Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area or the Cumberland Gap National Historic Park.”

DOUG FLYNN Host from 2016-present

Hometown Lexington Favorite Kentucky Life segment “I visited with a Mennonite knifemaker who lived near Glasgow, who did everything by hand. He had horses outside pushing a mill to generate electricity. And I thought that was really cool.” Favorite quote “Be a person of integrity, 24/7.” Idea of a perfect day “Get up, have a nice cup of coffee, my fishing stuff already loaded in the car. Then go down to a lake for some fishing and then back home for a nice dinner.”

Ken Burns: Country Music KET Monday, Dec. 2 • 10/9 pm KET2 Saturday, Nov. 30 • 9/8 pm This special highlights the most revealing moments from Ken Burns’ epic film Country Music, which explores how country music evolved over the course of the 20th century. 6 Aretha Franklin Remembered (My Music) KET Friday, Dec. 6 • 9/8 pm Celebrate the legendary Queen of Soul with the greatest hits from her television appearances, spanning the 1960s-2000s, many of which have never been seen in the United States. Beginning with her youthful gospel singing in a Detroit church with her sisters and pastor father, Aretha Franklin was destined for a life-long legacy of song. Hits include “Respect,” “Chain of Fools” and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.”

18 Outback Rabbis KET Wednesday, Dec. 18 • 10/9 pm KET2 Thursday, Dec. 19 • 10/9 pm Hitch a ride on a road trip like no other, as two Orthodox Hasidic Rabbis head off the beaten path, deep into the Aussie bush, to find Jewish life down under. In this documentary, which is as insightful as it is hilarious, the duo journey thousands of miles to some of Australia’s most remote and sparsely populated parts in a quest to reconnect Jews to their faith, no matter their location. It’s a picturesque travelogue that’s both a colorful and humorous look at two men fulfilling their slogan: “No Jew gets left behind.”

19 The PBS NewsHour & Politico Democratic Debate KET Thursday, Dec. 19 TBD •

PBS is partnering with Politico to host the sixth Democratic primary debate of the 2020 election cycle, held at the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs in Los Angeles. The slate of candidates scheduled to participate is still being determined. The Democratic National Committee signaled it intends to raise the threshold to qualify for the debate, a move that is expected to winnow the still-sprawling Democratic field.

31 Live from Lincoln Center: New York Philharmonic New Year’s Eve 2019 KET Tuesday, Dec. 31 • 8/7 pm Continuing a 15-year holiday tradition, the New York Philharmonic performs its annual New Year’s Eve concert, this year honoring the musical contributions of one of the greatest living composers in American musical theater: Stephen Sondheim.
