Tim Tassie said he first dis covered the value of KET in the early 1970s, when he was working as a middle school science teacher in Louis ville. KET had begun transmit ting educational programming throughout the Commonwealth, and Tassie regularly propped a TV antenna in his classroom’s third-story window to pick up the

signal for a KET science series, which was a big hit with his students and generated a lot of productive discussions.

“It was an experience that showed me the real potential of KET and instructional television,” Tassie said.

Soon after, Tassie took a job with KET, where he worked for more than 35 years before

retiring as KET’s director of education. Throughout his career, traveling and visiting with educa tors across Kentucky, Tassie said he witnessed firsthand just how important KET was to the Commonwealth. It was a view likewise shared by his wife, Carolyn, a lifelong librarian with Western Kentucky University and, later, Transylvania University.

2 MAKING A DIFFERENCE VISIONS | DECEMBER 2022

Tassie was raised in a Louis ville family that had a history of financially supporting local and statewide organizations. Tassie and his wife continued the tra dition, making a point in their estate planning to include finan cial gifts for organizations they believed in, one of which was KET.

In 2019, after Carolyn died from an unexpected bout with cancer, Tassie said he was moved to do something immediately, both to honor the memory of his wife and to experience the joy of giving while he was around to witness its impact.

“I thought why wait until I die to make these gifts?” Tassie said. “I saw organizations that had needs and I decided let’s start the giving now.”

The donation he made to KET created the Carolyn Tassie Me morial Fund, a lasting gift that helped fund on-air programming on KET through the KET/PBS Program Fund as well as new KET productions that tackled subjects his wife would have found meaningful.

The gift has already helped support the KET production: The Pack Horse Librarians of Appa lachia, a documentary about the

intrepid women of the Depression era who traveled on horseback delivering books to families liv ing in the mountains and remote parts of Eastern Kentucky.

“This project is something Carolyn truly would have loved,” Tassie said. “And it’s been won derful to see how her endowment has helped create a program that is valued by so many people in Kentucky.”

The experience of watching his gift make an impact, Tassie said, has been a rewarding one. And he said he looks forward to witness ing the other ways in which the endowment will support KET and, in turn, benefit the people of Kentucky.

“KET was founded on the idea that everyone in Kentucky de serves equal access to education and opportunity,” Tassie said. “And I’m here to tell you that the things KET does changes people’s lives. So I’m happy to give back to KET and return the favor after everything KET has done for me. That’s what being a community is all about.”

To learn more about making KET part of your estate planning, please contact Kacie Miller at 859-258-7206 or kmiller@ket.org.

TODAY’S KET

It has been another busy year at KET.

We began 2022 with a special look at lung health in the state, and throughout the year, our Kentucky Health series provided important health information on a variety of subjects.

New seasons of Kentucky Life and The Farmer & The Foodie explored the people and culture of the Commonwealth, while The Pack Horse Librarians of Appalachia provided a fascinating look at a little-known aspect of our history.

Earlier this summer we launched our new weeknight series Kentucky Edition, and the response has been tremendous.

Kentucky Edition expands upon our commitment to public affairs, including Kentucky Tonight, Comment on Kentucky and the unparalleled access we provide to the proceedings of the state legislature and Kentucky Supreme Court, as well as candidate and election coverage, and our forums on topics ranging from agritech and youth mental health to a special salute to our veterans.

And of course, education remained at the forefront of our services. Let’s Learn Kentucky is helping support kindergarten readiness by providing an easy and accessible resource hub for parents and caregivers. In classrooms, News Quiz was once again one of the top nationally utilized resources on PBS LearningMedia, and FastForward and Workplace Essential Skills continued to help adult learners across the country.

We’re honored to have served you, your family, and every Kentuckian throughout the year.

We thank you for your support and wish you a wonderful holiday season.

I’M HERE TO TELL YOU THAT THE THINGS THAT KET DOES CHANGES PEOPLE’S LIVES.
-Tim Tassie
Shae Hopkins KET Executive Director and CEO All the very best, Tim and Carolyn Tassie

‘Kentucky Life’ introduces new host Chip Polston

Kentucky Life will kick off its 28th season in January with a new host: Chip Polston. Polston may be familiar to viewers. He’s been a frequent on-air volunteer during pledge drives and was the host of KET’s Mixed Media arts series.

Polston said he’s thrilled to be hosting Kentucky Life, a program he’s enjoyed for many years.

“As a lifelong Kentuckian, the opportunity to go out and tell stories about my home is beyond exciting to me,” Polston said. “I can’t wait to get out into our beautiful Commonwealth and meet the fascinating people who make this state so special.”

Making its debut in 1995, Kentucky Life has been one of KET’s most popular weekly programs. Polston will be the program’s fourth host, following in the footsteps of Byron Crawford, Dave Shuffett, and Doug Flynn.

In anticipation of a new season of The Farmer & The Foodie returning in January, hosts Maggie Keith and Lindsey McClave have released a collection of new holiday recipes that make delicious use of fresh ingredients produced by Kentucky farmers.

SORGHUM CARAMEL CORN

Recipe from the ‘Sorghum Treasures’ cookbook, produced by the National Sweet Sorghum Producers and Processors Association

INGREDIENTS:

• 15 cups popcorn

• 2 cups brown sugar

• 2 sticks unsalted butter

• ½ cup sorghum

• ½ tsp salt

• 1 tsp vanilla

• ½ tsp baking soda

• pinch of cream of tartar

INSTRUCTIONS:

Preheat the oven to 250°. In a medium pot, melt butter over low heat and stir in brown sugar, sorghum, salt, and cream of tartar. Boil for 45 seconds, stirring occasionally, before removing from heat and stirring in vanilla and baking soda. Stir until the color lightens and the caramel begins to pull away from the sides of the pot. Pour caramel over the popped corn and use tongs to toss until evenly coated. Transfer to a rimmed baking sheet and bake for one hour, tossing every 15 minutes. Cool and enjoy! Makes approximately 15 cups
