PROTECTING KENTUCKY KET’s transmission towers carry more than television programs

hen disaster strikes, emergency management officials say they’re thankful to have a statewide transmission network that keeps working even when other forms of communication go dark. And KET’s network — the same system of transmitters and towers that deliver the latest Masterpiece drama, Nature documentary and Daniel Tiger episode to your home — plays an important role ensuring that weather officials, first responders and law enforcement agencies can maintain communications in tornadoes, floods, forest fires and other critical situa2

tions. “The best warning system is one that works in multiple ways—and KET’s transmission network is part of the backbone of our communications with the general public,” says Joe Sullivan, a meteorologist with the Kentucky Emergency Management. “If power is lost to the cell towers, for instance, our information still gets to where it needs to go because of this backup system. And it saves lives.”
Always-on communication network The KET network uses a vast array of microwave radio links and broad-
cast transmitters to deliver KET’s four channels to the entire Commonwealth and into parts of the seven surrounding states. If you have TV service from a cable or satellite company, your provider receives KET’s signal from this broadcast transmission network, and then delivers it to your home. If you receive TV over-theair through an antenna, your KET channels come directly from the KET broadcast network.
KET’s network of towers and transmitters, located across the commonwealth, also house local, state and federal agencies’ communications systems. Each site is backed up with emergency generators and can run for up to 72 hours after loss of
other agencies to construct their own towers. “The cost to build out a backup system for emergency communications from scratch would be astronomical,” says Dana Golub, vice president and director of PBS

commercial power. With fuel deliveries, KET’s transmission sites can remain powered indefinitely, providing critical communication support in the event of an emergency.
KET aids emergency agencies This infrastructure helps KET partner with and support the emergency communications of a wide variety of agencies, including Kentucky Emergency Warning System, Kentucky National Guard, Kentucky State Police, Kentucky Department of Transportation, Kentucky Division of Forestry, and Kentucky Emergency Management and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The KET network also supports NOAA’s National Weather Service with 12 NOAA weather transmitters on KET towers. These 100- to 1,000-foot towers — much taller than regional radio or cell-phone towers — serve as a well-distributed statewide communications system to alert the public of weather and other emergencies. KET’s statewide transmissions network offers efficiencies, often eliminating the expense for
WARN, the backup network for nationwide wireless emergency alerting, which is broadcast throughout Kentucky by KET’s transmission system. “The federal government’s investments to leverage the existing infrastructure of public television was a no brainer because our network already reaches 95 percent of the country.”
Our growing role in public safety KET transmission sites also host equipment used by the FBI, the U.S. Secret Service, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. And many KET sites are used by local agencies for communications, including sheriffs’ departments and local emergency management. As part of the federal government’s Emergency Alert System, KET is ready to serve. And with changing technologies forthcoming, we’re uniquely positioned to further expand our public safety role. Working with the state’s emergency management team and network of Kentucky broadcasters, enhanced services are on the horizon.
TODAY’S KET Through KET’s 16-transmitter network, we broadcast the programs you enjoy and rely on all day, every day. What may not be obvious, however, is that KET’s statewide communications system also plays a vital role in public safety. The unfortunate recent weather disasters are a reminder of how quickly thousands of people can be impacted by an emergency situation. Our hearts go out to those continuing to recover from the tragic loss of lives, homes and businesses following the tornadoes that struck multiple communities in Western Kentucky this past December. And we are grateful for the many first responders and volunteers whose efforts made, and continue to make, such a difference. Reliable communications and swift actions are essential to help keep people safe and mitigate loss. We’re proud to serve as part of and to support Kentucky’s public safety systems through our highly reliable infrastructure available 24/7/365 – and the dedicated men and women who work to protect us all every day. All the very best,

This innovative new adaptation from Masterpiece of Jules Verne’s classic novel features David Tennant starring as Phileas Fogg, an Englishman who bets a fortune he can circumnavigate the planet in a mere eighty days — quite a feat, considering it’s 1872. But to do so, he’ll need to assemble a travel party and utilize virtually every mode of transportation available: from ships and trains to camels, stagecoaches and even balloons.
Marian Anderson overcame humiliation, prejudice and financial hardship to become a voice for justice, a renowned master of her craft and the first Black person to sing a leading role at the Metropolitan Opera in 1955. Balancing her public triumphs with her personal struggles, this film charts the impact of one of the world’s greatest singers, whose career offers a window into a time of seismic change.

It is one of the most iconic images of our time: two African American medal winners standing on the awards podium in silent protest with heads bowed and fists raised as “The Star Spangled Banner” is played.

Popular kids news series holds live Q&A Having already made KET’s News Quiz one of the most viewed resources nationally on PBS LearningMedia, teachers and their students connected on a more personal level recently when they were invited to participate in one of two live Zoom Q&A sessions with host Kelsey Starks. Nearly 1,000 students chatted with Kelsey, learning how the program is made and the importance of news literacy. Photo above: Fourth and fifth-grade students from Murray Middle School, who are regular News Quiz viewers, were especially excited to get a behind-the-scenes tour of the program, said Sheri Muehleman, their teacher.
Martinis & Mistletoe honorees Past honorees joined 2021 honorees Garren and Susan Colvin in December to celebrate KET’s impact in Northern Kentucky at the annual Martinis & Mistletoe event. Bottom left: Susan Colvin, Oakley Farris, Elaine Groneck and Ken Harper; KET’s Michele Ripley, Garren Colvin, Dan Groneck, Phyllis Moreland and Jack Moreland.

Exploring social and emotional learning through the theatrical arts KET’s Education team recently collaborated with the Commonwealth Theatre in Louisville to create a new series of videos that teach social and emotional learning (SEL) techniques to help young audiences manage their emotions and empathize with others. The videos, taped on location at the theater with students from its drama program, demonstrate several SEL activities to learn how to express and understand one’s emotions. These videos and many more KET resources addressing social and emotional learned are available at KET.org/SELcollection.
Editor’s Note Due to circumstances beyond our control arising from COVID-19, the manufacturing and delivery of the January issue of Visions was unexpectedly delayed. While we do our best to ensure timely delivery, you may also access the electronic version of the magazine any time at KET.org/Visions.

MORE TO EXPLORE
CLEARING THE AIR ON LUNG HEALTH Kentucky has some of the nation’s highest rates of lung cancer, asthma and respiratory disease, but Dr. Chaitayna Mandapakala, a pulmonologist with St. Elizabeth’s Healthcare in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, says he hopes those statistics can change as people learn more about the dangers posed to their lungs and take the necessary steps to improve their health. “It’s very sad when you see someone who’s past the point where we can do anything to help,” Dr. Mandapakala said. “Which is why it’s so important for people to learn about lung health. Because once they take ownership of their health, that’s when you see them begin to get better.” Dr. Mandapakala is one of the many health professionals appearing in KET’s new three-part series, Fighting to Breathe: Lung Disease in Kentucky, which begins Monday, Feb. 21. The series examines one of Kentucky’s biggest health challenges — respiratory health — and furnishes the latest research on best practices for treatment and prevention. The series concludes with a one-hour KET forum, hosted by Renee Shaw and Dr. Wayne Tuckson, that examines what’s next in the fight against lung disease. For more info, visit KET.org/respiratory or scan the QR code.
