MAKING CONNECTIONS PARTNERSHIP WITH KENTUCKY DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION HELPS TECHNOLOGY THRIVE IN THE CLASSROOM

David Couch

A

s a young cadet at West Point in the 1980s, David Couch learned a lesson about education. He was studying engineering, and despite reams of written material at his disposal, he found himself struggling to grasp the ideas behind aerodynamics. So his instructor took a different approach by showing him a visual simulation, one that illustrated the forces of lift and drag. Suddenly, the principles began to make sense. “I got it by visually seeing it,” Couch said. “That’s what a good teacher does, recognizing the different learning styles of the student.” It’s a lesson that’s served Couch well over the past 20 years in his work at the Kentucky Department of Education, where he serves as chief information officer and associate commissioner. And it’s one he likes to point to when he talks about the collaborative partnership between the KDE and KET, and their pioneering efforts to bring technology to the classroom. “KET was the very first to offer educational television to all the schools across the state,” Couch said. “And KDE was the very first to provide high-speed internet to every school across the state. And what’s been fun is to watch us both maximize those technologies.” Schools increasingly rely on that connectivity to complement students’ classroom computers—or, as Couch calls them, “contentdelivery devices”—cultivating an environment of “anytime, anywhere, always-on learning.” Teachers

can tailor their lesson plans to meet students’ individual learning styles, thanks to online resources such as PBS LearningMedia, a free repository of educational videos and materials that KET provides throughout Kentucky. KET is also among the leading national contributors to PBS LearningMedia, creating more than 3,000 digital resources, which were streamed more than two million times in 2017 alone. “KET has always been outstanding in providing great audio and video content that encourages teachers and students to not shy away from certain subjects because it’s on the screen in a format they can understand very quickly,” said Couch.

Minecraft. The program culminates each year in a state championship that is live-streamed by KET and watched by thousands of students and educators. KET also helps advise school districts in their preparation for STLP, teaching them about video production in KET’s Media Lab and connecting them with relevant PBS LearningMedia materials to get them up and running on their projects. “KET has a cadre of staff and consultants who go out and work with teachers, making them aware of the electronic content that’s out there and teaching them how to maximize that content in their instruction,” Couch said. “That saves us money because

“KET HAS A CADRE OF STAFF AND CONSULTANTS WHO GO OUT AND WORK WITH TEACHERS, MAKING THEM AWARE OF THE ELECTRONIC CONTENT THAT’S OUT THERE AND TEACHING THEM HOW TO MAXIMIZE THAT CONTENT IN THEIR INSTRUCTION.” Education runs deep in Couch’s family. His mom was a beloved teacher in Johnson County, and two of his children are teachers as well. Couch and KDE earned nationwide plaudits thanks to a series of education technology milestones: the first state to connect school districts with highspeed internet, the first to switch to cloud-based computing, and the first to implement a state-wide school information system. Those milestones helped pave the way for another statewide initiative: the Student Technology Leadership Program, known as STLP, through which Kentucky students tackle a variety of technology and engineering projects—everything from robotics to

we don’t have to hire those folks at KDE because KET is already doing it and doing it well.” That collaboration, Couch said, is an example of the state’s efforts to be good stewards of taxpayers’ dollars, using its resources efficiently and equitably serving every district in the state. “We always try to look at the things that can be done statewide and the things we can do together as organizations,” Couch said. “KET fits in with that because its focus is on the right thing—providing a good experience for students and teachers. And when you have that as your focus, you’re going to maximize your resources.”

What’s possible? That’s a question many of us ask of ourselves around this time as a new year presents the opportunity to consider new possibilities. ‘What’s possible?’ is also a question that’s at the heart of so much we do here at KET. What’s possible when young children have access to high quality early learning resources that build the foundation for success? What’s possible when students and teachers have access to innovative materials that help demonstrate complex concepts and engage through modern technologies? What’s possible when adults discover new career opportunities, whether that’s through earning a GED credential, improving essential workplace skills or discovering the pathway toward one of today’s highdemand jobs? And what’s possible for every one of us — no matter our age or circumstance — when we expand our horizons by exploring an unfamiliar subject, challenging our ideas or simply taking up a new hobby? Whether it’s through KET’s many educational services that serve early childhood, K-12 and beyond, or it’s through our programs on science, history, arts and how-to, our goal is to ensure Kentuckians never hesitate to ask the question ‘What’s possible?’ Here’s to wishing you a year full of limitless possibilities. Sincerely,

Shae Hopkins

KET Executive Director and CEO

JA NUA RY 2019

THE DOCTOR IS IN AGAIN A new season of Doc Martin returns and life in the quaint seaside village of Portwenn couldn’t be more abnormal. Dr. Martin Ellingham, a surgeon who fled his London practice after developing a fear of blood, begins life anew in a sleepy coastal town, where he’s the lone country doctor. Never one for pleasantries or tact, Martin offends virtually everyone with whom he comes into contact — only to begrudgingly win them over with his medical prowess. The show’s eighth season finds Martin and his wife, Louisa, fresh off a round of couples therapy, facing new domestic challenges, as their toddler son, James, utters his first cryptic words. Louisa frets she’s missing pivotal moments of her son’s development, while Martin goes about his business as stolidly as ever. The village’s police constable, Joe Penhale, having proposed to Martin’s nanny, Janice, after a whirlwind courtship, sweats the details of his upcoming wedding. Bert Large struggles to get his fledgling whisky business off the ground. And Martin’s receptionist, Morwenna, receives some startling news when her parents arrive unexpectedly in Portwenn.

THE QUEEN BRACES FOR THE STORM The story of the world’s most powerful woman, Queen Victoria, returns this month in “Victoria,” the lush historical drama from Masterpiece. As season 3 gets underway, the year is 1848 and Victoria is pregnant yet again. She and Prince Albert — parents now of six children — find themselves increasingly at odds over their offspring and each other. Looming in the background, revolution is breaking out across Europe, as the downtrodden agitate for the overthrow of aristocratic rule. The discontent bleeds into England, where radical notions — universal male suffrage, equal representation and the secret ballot — take root and threaten to boil over into violence. Jenna Coleman, of Doctor Who, returns as the young but fearless monarch. She’s joined by her devoted, if slightly obsessive husband, Prince Albert, played by Tom Hughes. The new season brings with it a host of new characters, such as the vainglorious Lord Palmerston, who crosses swords with the queen over British foreign policy. Also new is Princess Feodora, Victoria’s devoted but troubled half-sister, who seeks refuge at Buckingham Palace after unrest roils her German homeland.

Hold the Sunset

The Wrong Mans

MEET THE NEW BRITISH COMEDIES Fancy some of that dark and distinctive British wit? You’re in luck this January, when two BBC comedy imports make their debut on KET2. Hold the Sunset marks John Cleese’s first return to a BBC sitcom since Fawlty Towers. Cleese plays Phil, a retiree who plans to marry his love interest, Edith (played by Alison Steadman), and move abroad to start a new life. Their plans are dashed, however, when Edith’s immature, 50-year-old son moves back home after leaving his wife and children. The Wrong Mans is an action-comedy series developed by James Corden (The Late Late Show) and Mathew Baynton. The two play government employees who get sucked into an underground crime ring after stumbling upon a discarded mobile phone at the scene of a car accident.

Friends of KET Board welcomes new members

Kentucky early childhood educators collaborate at PBS KIDS Edcamp

Friends of KET, whose members serve as local ambassadors in their communities, welcomed seven new volunteers to serve on its board. The board includes representatives for 35 districts, encompassing all 120 Kentucky counties. Board members help promote programs and services in their communities, raise funds and host special events. The new members are (from left) Lora Suttles of Paintsville, Jeanie Dorton of Lexington, Ben Talley of Hopkinsville, Michelle Johnson of Taylorsville, Judy Carter of Flatwoods, Carla Jaenicke of Ashland, and Elizabeth Griffith of Owensboro (not pictured).

In November, early childhood professionals from around Kentucky visited KET in Lexington for the state’s first ever PBS KIDS Edcamp. The Edcamp provided educators who work with young children a space to share, collaborate and learn from one another. Attendees were also introduced to PBS KIDS resources that support social and emotional development, math, and literacy skills.

Ashley Judd, a first grade teacher at Tyner Elementary School in Jackson County, talked to Edcamp participants about her use of technology in the classroom. Judd was chosen as Kentucky’s 2017 PBS Digital Innovator.

Three cheers for new season of our favorite grumpy doc Hundreds of KET viewers turned out in December for preview screenings of Doc Martin, offering participants an early glimpse of the storylines shaping up for the popular British comedy’s eighth season which premieres this month. Fans attended screenings of the first episode in Louisville at the Kentucky Center and in Lexington at the Kentucky Theater and posed for pictures wirh a life-size Martin cutout.

The new award program, sponsored by PBS KIDS, recognizes passionate educators from across the country who work with young children, from infants to second graders. Haynes is one of 17 honorees from across the country named in this year’s inaugural class of Early Learning Champions. “The mountains naturally isolate us from our neighbors, and it can be more difficult for the kids who live here to interact with other kids,” Haynes said. “Little School gives them that chance – and that makes all the difference when they head into kindergarten.”

College students trek through western Kentucky in ‘Transformative Travels’ Transformative Travels features 10 University of Kentucky students exploring communities, cultures and characters in western Kentucky while learning how to think critically about the world around them. The program, hosted by Dr. Jason Swanson, a tourism professor at UK, is produced and directed by journalist Doug High.
