en Malphrus was just 9 years old the night he discovered what he wanted to do with his life. His mother had traveled with him to Savannah, Ga., to take part in an amateur astronomy night. He peered through an eight-inch telescope up at the starry night sky and fell awestruck at what he saw: the rings of Saturn — magical, mysterious and millions of miles away. “I looked at that and thought, ‘They will pay you to study this for a living?’” he said. It was a moment that Malphrus, who now directs the Space Science Center at Morehead State University, said is typical for those who end up pursuing a career in the sciences. “Often students can trace their inspiration to a single event,” Malphrus said, adding that the wonder he experienced as a nineyear-old set him on a career path to study astrophysics and aerospace engineering. And life-altering moments like his, Malphrus says, illustrate why KET plays an essential role in the Commonwealth, bringing the powers of math and science to children at a young age and planting seeds that could influence the direction of their lives. “KET does so many incredible things to promote the sciences and STEM careers in Kentucky,” Malphrus said. “One, of course, is the wonderful programming that we see from KET and PBS — and so much of that programming is inspirational. But what’s extraordinary is the outreach that KET does in the school systems.”
Last year, KET’s K-12 consultants visited more than 350 schools, and KET’s early childhood consultants visited almost 75 counties. In addition, Kentucky students and teachers streamed more than two million KET digital resources. “The KET outreach programs come in and help teachers understand how to present STEM content in innovative ways,” he added. “And that can make a huge difference in children’s lives.” Malphrus says the applied space science field has exploded in size over the past 10 years. In fact, wwwthe aerospace industry has become Kentucky’s leading export manufacturer, comprising some 600 companies and employing more than 17,500 Kentuckians. “We use space for virtually everything — and most people don’t realize it,” Malphrus said. “So there are lots of opportunities for those who want to do this kind of work in Kentucky.” It’s important, Malphrus says, that students get hands-on experience early in their studies, he said, so they can start making connections between all the various fields — math, astronomy, computer coding, applied engineering — that come into play when putting a satellite into space. “Kids don’t typically have a lot of role models for scientists and engineers,” Malphrus said. “But KET, through its programming and school services, provides incredible exposure to those STEM fields for students. And I think that is an invaluable resource.”
“KET DOES SO MANY INCREDIBLE THINGS TO PROMOTE THE SCIENCES AND STEM CAREERS IN KENTUCKY.”
Correction: In last month’s Making a Difference profile of Sec. Derrick Ramsey, the article incorrectly said that he suffered a season-ending injury in 1982 when in fact he did return to play later that year.
During that hot July, I remember sitting on my family’s front porch as a child, looking up at the moon and thinking, “Wow, we did it, we’re there!” The moon landing was an accomplishment that everyone shared in. People across the world gathered around television sets and marveled as history unfolded. What followed was a sense of awe, pride and patriotism that resonates to this day whenever I think about that astonishing moment. What will be the next moment for humanity? Landing on Mars? Eradicating cancer? Something we’ve yet to dream of ? Whatever it is, there’s no doubt it will be the result of teams of people applying vast amounts of scientific knowledge and understanding toward a common goal. That’s why we’re proud to offer hundreds of resources that build on children’s natural sense of curiosity and help cultivate our next generations of scientists, engineers and researchers. (Check them out at KET.org/STEMworks.) And we’re also pleased to present the wonders of science every week on the award-winning Nova, Nature and other programs throughout the year. As we celebrate 50 years since that first giant leap, it serves as both a testament to what we’re capable of achieving and inspiration for the many leaps still to come. Sincerely,
Shae Hopkins
KET Executive Director and CEO
CHASING THE MOON SHOWS THE BEHIND-THE-SCENES DRAMA IN THE RACE TO THE MOON The Apollo 11 moon landing on July 20, 1969, stands as one of humankind’s monumental achievements. But what’s often lost in the narrative of that historic day is the story behind the scenes: the fears and motivations of those at the vanguard of the riskiest space mission in history. American Experience: Chasing the Moon, an ambitious six-hour film shown over three nights, thrillingly pulls back the curtain on the space race. It offers an unprecedented look at the decade-long odyssey to land a man on the moon, casting new light on the rivalry between the Soviet Union and United States and upending much of the conventional mythology surrounding the effort. The series recasts the Space Age for what it truly was: a fascinating stew of scientific innovation and public relations savvy as well as political calculation and personal drama.

JULY 2 019
With no narration and using only archival footage — including a visual feast of previously lost or overlooked material — the film features new interviews with a diverse cast of characters who played key roles in these historic events: Buzz Aldrin, Frank Borman, Sergei Khrushchev, the son of former Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev, and Poppy Northcutt, the 25-yearold mathematics whiz who gained worldwide attention as the first woman to serve in NASA’s Mission Control. While other documentaries have largely painted a familiar picture of the steps and obstacles overcome in the space race, Chasing the Moon tells a vastly more entertaining and surprising story of how the drive to land a man on the moon was fueled as much by politics as it was by technology. The film is directed by Robert Stone, an Oscar and Emmy Award
nominated filmmaker, who recalled the night 50 years ago when he was awoken by his mother to watch as two Americans set foot upon another world — one he could see from his home, distantly glowing through the window above his TV set. “In many ways, Chasing the Moon is the culmination of a lifetime of thoughts that have been churning through my mind about this extraordinary period in which I grew up,” Stone says. “[It’s] about the boundless ambition and promise of a brighter future that space travel

inspired, the belief that anything is possible if we join together in a common goal, and the urgency it ignited to preserve and care for our home planet.”

In the wee hours of June 14, 2017, a fire broke out on a lower floor of the 23-story Grenfell building in West London. Within minutes, the fire had raced up the building, trapping hundreds of residents. Seventy-two people died in the blaze, marking one of England’s worst modern disasters. This documentary — through eye-witness accounts and personal footage captured on the scene — tells the story of that night, from the moment the fire began until the flames were finally brought under control 24 hours later.

Actress Julie Walters (of the Harry Potter films) takes us on a beguiling travelogue around Britain. She travels by coastal railways from Scotland’s Highlands to the western reaches of Cornwall and Wales, visiting an estate where men and women were trained to be WWII secret agents and exploring the Talyllyn Railway, the inspiration for Thomas the Tank Engine. These delightful destinations offer spectacular scenery, fascinating history and an abundance of local color and charm.
The series transports viewers to the early-to-mid 1900s to learn about some of England’s most shocking and surprising murder cases. Host Nicholas Day revisits the scenes of diabolical crimes, weaving together compelling storytelling with historical re-enactments to paint a full picture of the events as they unfolded decades ago. And he guides us through the killers’ worlds, giving us a better view of how police ingenuity and early forensics helped bring them to justice.
