Buffalo Soldiers: Fighting on Two Fronts

Established by Congress in 1867, the 14th Amendment promised African American men citizenship in exchange for military enlistment. This documentary recounts the history of these Buffalo Soldiers, who despite being denied their rights due to Jim Crow laws during the Reconstruction Era, still left a complicated legacy, aiding the United States’ westward expansion and battling against Filipinos fighting for independence during the Spanish-American War.

Students showcase their math, science and technology skills at STLP event
A record-breaking crowd of nearly 20,000 students, educators and volunteers converged on Rupp Arena to participate in the Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP) State Championship. Sponsored by the Kentucky Department of Education and livestreamed by KET, the annual event gives students a chance to showcase their STEAM skills (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics).
More than 13,000 students participated, and judges identified 70 final projects awarded state championship trophies in elementary, middle, high school and technical categories. Watch the STLP award highlights program at KET.org/STLP
Participants also had the opportunity to sit in as audience members for a taping of a special News Quiz episode, hosted by Kelsey Starks and filmed from the floor at Rupp Arena. The episode featured several technology-themed segments and brought 4th and 5th grade students from Fayette and Jessamine County elementary schools up on stage to help answer the episode’s opinion question. Free screening spotlights Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville
KET is co-hosting a free screening of an episode about Cave Hill Cemetery featured on World’s Greatest Cemeteries, a nationally-syndicated program that reveals the stories behind some of the nation’s most beautiful burial grounds.
Louisville’s Cave Hill Cemetery, built in 1848, harbors the graves of a number of famous Kentuckians, including boxer Muhammad Ali, Colonel Harland Sanders and suffragist Susan Look Avery.
The screening is scheduled for Wednesday, June 7, at 5:30 pm ET, at the Leroy Neiman Gallery in the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville.

Students explore vocational fields at Northern Kentucky career fair
Pre-K through second grade students and their families recently participated in a “World of Possibilities” Career Fair, where they could explore 14 different career fields. The event, sponsored by KET, Sixth District Elementary and the James E. Biggs Early Childhood Education Center, also featured science experiments, a virtual conversation with a NASA engineer and a safety presentation with Covington police and fire departments.
