CREATING
OPPORTUNITIES SECRETARY RAMSEY SAYS EDUCATION OPENS DOORS AT ANY STAGE OF LIFE
N
ot long after helping the Oakland Raiders win the Super Bowl in 1981, Derrick Ramsey, then the team’s tight end, was compelled to confront something he hadn’t previously given much thought to: his post-football career. Ramsey had suffered his first major injury, one that sidelined him for most of the 1982 season, and the time away from the gridiron made him reflective. What would he do if he no longer could play professional football? The question ultimately prompted the former University of Kentucky star to return to school and finish his college degree. “What I realized was that this thing — football — could be over at anytime,” Ramsey said. “And there were guys on the team who were always on me about getting back to school.” It’s a lesson that Ramsey, now in his post as Kentucky’s Secretary of Education and Workforce Development, is eager to share — that one’s career is often a series of reinventions, where the path from one point to the next is, in many cases, guided by education. And it’s why Ramsey says he prizes KET and the educational resources it creates, such as the FastForward program, which helps people lay the groundwork for the next chapter in their lives. FastForward, launched by KET in 2014, is a complete online educational

For more than 40 years, KET has offered instructional services for students in Kentucky and across the nation studying for the GED ® test or other high school equivalency exams. We’ve long known that dropping out of high school need not be the end of one’s education or a barrier to a successful career. This has perhaps never been more true than it is today, as a rapidly changing workplace demands a highly skilled workforce. For the 19 million-plus Americans without a high school diploma, earning a high school credential is the important first step to obtaining the additional schooling or training needed for the jobs of today and tomorrow. And adult learners can turn to KET’s FastForward to help. KET is the largest non-profit GED publisher in the nation, and our FastForward product is one of the most advanced test-preparation systems available. Nine out of 10 people who use FastForward pass the GED test. Additionally, our new Workplace Essentials Skills and In Demand resources provide information and training tailored to specific highdemand career sectors. ew things are cuter than baby animals. But cuteness doesn’t count for much in the wild, where an unforgiving landscape teems with ravenous predators and hazards at every turn. They’ll need to be tenacious and adaptable if they’re to survive their first year. In Animal Babies, a three-part series from BBC, viewers follow the first breaths, first steps and first milestones of some of the world’s most adorable baby animals.

It’s not always the warmest of welcomes for babies in the wild
With stunning photography and endearing stories, this series reveals many of the challenges these baby animals face as they fight to survive in some of the most beautiful places on the planet. It’s a steep learning curve, to be sure. But if they can adapt to their surroundings and learn from those around them, they just might beat the odds and make it to adulthood.
WATER BABIES SAFARI BABIES With some of the largest herds on the planet all competing for the same food and dangerous predators around every corner, the African savannah is a hugely competitive place. Meet the newly born elephant calf who, with her mom, has become separated from the safety of the herd. She must battle against scorching heat to find her family. Six adorable cheetah cubs are chased from a kill by vultures, and now they need to start to learn to hunt for themselves. Watch the young zebra foal, who, despite her still wobbly legs, has to cross the treacherous waters of a crocodileinfested river.
KET Monday, June 10 • 9/8 pm KET2 Thursday, June 13 • 10/9 pm
For some water babies, simply getting to water in the first place can be the biggest trial of their young lives. Others have to face up to their first swimming lesson. With pounding waves, deadly currents and hordes of hungry predators, growing up as a water baby is not for the timid. Meet the adorable baby fur seal pup who lost his mother among three million other fur seals that crowd the beaches of South Georgia. Watch how daredevil ducklings, barely a day old, take an amazing leap of faith. And meet the three boisterous giant otter pups that must learn to hunt for themselves.
KET Monday, June 17 • 9/8 pm KET2 Thursday, June 20 • 10/9 pm
MOUNTAIN BABIES It’s hard enough surviving on sheer cliffs and snowy mountainsides if you’re an experienced adult. But for babies, it’s an immense struggle. Facing extreme weather and starved predators, they have to work hard for every mouthful of food. Meet the clumsy guanaco calf who has to stand up within minutes of being born. Travel with the wild mountain goat kid crossing raging mountain rivers. And follow a young musk ox escaping from the jaws of hungry wolves.

This series travels to the world’s most famous museums in search of weird, wonderful, amazing and fascinating stories connected with both the wellknown and the more obscure exhibits held in their collections. From new revelations on the Mona Lisa, the Sistine Chapel and the golden mask of King Tutankhamun to the mysterious ‘tank room’ of Britain’s Natural History Museum, this series combines surprising revelations about things we recognize with amazing revelations about things we’ve never seen before.
Chris Tarrant takes viewers on a tour through Germany, the Czech Republic and Poland, showing how Hitler’s regime built the planet’s most extensive rail network leading up to World War II. The trains were used to transport millions of prisoners to ghettos and death camps during the Holocaust. Tarrant visits significant stops along the way and speaks with Holocaust survivors, some of whom worked as children building the railway or witnessed first-hand the horrors of its ruthless efficiency.
14 American Masters: Terrence McNally KET Friday, June 14 • 9/8 pm KET2 Sunday, June 16 • 8/7 pm This film explores the life of the four-time Tony Award-winning playwright Terrence McNally. Over six decades, he wrote trailblazing plays, musicals, operas and screenplays about sexuality, homophobia, and faith, including Love! Valour! Compassion! (1994) and Dead Man Walking (2000). Rising above challenges, including his abusive alcoholic parents and growing up as a gay teen in a conservative Christian town, McNally overcame his own alcoholism to establish himself as one of the premiere playwrights of his era.
16 Endeavour KET Sunday, June 16 • 9/8 pm KET2 Wednesday, June 19 • 9/8 pm new season Shaun Evans sports a new mustachioed look as DS Endeavour Morse in the sixth season of this detective drama, the popular prequel to the Inspector Morse series. Set in 1969, the new season brings the detective sergeant back to Oxford, where he goes undercover at a public school to investigate the murder of a female student. The discovery of another body, however, leads Endeavour to question the main suspect’s guilt, leaving him wondering just whom he can trust.

Attention viewers in Hazard and Morehead: Plan to Rescan! Do you live in the Hazard or Morehead areas and get KET through an antenna? This info is for you! KET’s Rescan Day for Hazard and Morehead is Friday, June 21. Because of FCC-mandated changes, most television stations, including KET, are making updates. This means that on June 21, your KET channel will go black if you live in the Hazard or Morehead areas and use an antenna to watch TV. To receive KET, you’ll need to rescan your TV channels. For more information, visit KET.org/rescan or call (866) 291-8189. For KET viewers in these areas who have cable or satellite, you do not need to do anything. (The Rescan Day for all other areas of Kentucky is in October.)
KET wins broadcasting awards KET recently was recognized with two statewide awards from the Kentucky Associated Press Broadcasters Association. KET was awarded first-place for public affairs programming for its Disrupting the Opioid Epidemic: A KET Forum, a town-hall style discussion that brought together leaders across Kentucky’s law enforcement, mental health, education and labor sectors to discuss strategies for addressing the state’s opioid epidemic. Additionally, KET also won a second-place award in political coverage for its Legislative Update series, which offers daily coverage and analysis of the legislative session in Frankfort. The judges’ notes said the program was “tough but fair” and helped viewers “walk away with an understanding of an issue from multiple perspectives.” 20 VISION S

Floyd County families help pilot workshop series on playful learning KET’s early childhood education staff joined families in Floyd County to pilot a new Ready Jet Go! family community learning workshop series. The series, sponsored by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting through its Ready To Learn program, encourages playful learning through hands-on activities. KET staff meet with families once each week over a four-week period to share a meal and teach fun ways to integrate science and literacy learning in their home activities. These workshops will ultimately be available for anyone to use through PBS LearningMedia, an online repository of more than 120,000 free educational lessons and digital resources.
