hile much, including our educational system, has changed dramatically in recent months, fourth graders at Lexington’s Meadowthorpe Elementary are keeping to their weekly tradition of watching KET’s News Quiz program, which familiarizes them with current events. “Everyone’s pretty stressed adjusting to all the changes,” said Alexandra Farhadian, their teacher. “So News Quiz is one of the things that’s kept our class feeling normal. The students look forward to it every week, and it was the first thing they asked about.” The News Quiz 2

production team recently finished its 35th season with new episodes produced from home. Across Kentucky, social distancing measures have upended the traditional classroom model of education, compelling teachers and parents to search for new ways to meet their at-home learning needs. Those searches often enough run through KET. Over the past few months, KET’s educational resources are being consumed like never before, with usage up more than 400 percent. KET’s Learn at Home toolkit, filled with high-quality educational lessons
and activities, helps parents start off on the right foot with their children’s learning at home. KET’s special daytime programming lineup, aligned with PreK through 12th grade-level learning, offers a lifeline for families that might not have internet access. And the thousands of lesson plans, videos and activities found at PBS LearningMedia, all searchable by subject and grade, give teachers and parents a powerful tool for supplementing their at-home instruction. “KET is the go-to place for educational resources,” says Dee Dee Webb, technology integration specialist with the Grayson County
school teachers from his district— the Science Squad. They go through PBS LearningMedia resources to come up with new science lessons to share with students. “Reading and math typically take priority in early grades, so we use our sessions to help everyone get more comfortable teaching STEM concepts and finding activities to round out their lesson plans. PBS LearningMedia has been great for this. It’s like a free encyclopedia, except it’s user friendly.” School District, who has been creatSarah Ladnier of Versailles has ing resource packs for her teachers been helping her three children learn and distributing them via Twitter. at home, employing the KET pro“They provide so many great digital gram Wild Kratts to lead them on materials that offer self-paced learnvirtual safaris. ing and interactive activities and “We spend a lot of our days quizzes.” pretending to be the Kratt brothers,” KET’s Ladnier said. educational “My oldest KET IS THE GO-TO PLACE materison plans FOR EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES. to become als have prompted a THEY PROVIDE SO MANY GREAT a zoolowide range DIGITAL MATERIALS THAT OFFER gist, so the of out-ofprogram has SELF-PACED LEARNING AND the-box acbeen a call tivities, from to action for INTERACTIVE ACTIVITIES AND online book him to learn QUIZZES. readings to about these virtual scav— DEE DEE WEBB animals and enger hunts. how he can “These aren’t the typical school help protect their habitats.” days, so everyone’s looking to make And when her two-year-old the most of this period by being credaughter Norah grows impatient ative,” says Sam Northern, the library from all the animal talk, Ladnier says media specialist at Simpson Elementhat’s her cue to segue to her favorite tary School in Franklin. program, Pinkalicious & Peterrific. Parents, teachers and students have all been doing a remarkable job throughout this unprecedented time, and we’ve heard so many inspiring stories about the many ways learning has continued at home. Of course, helping educators enhance instruction through innovation and engagement has been a longtime cornerstone of KET’s educational mission. Today, through our broadcast programs and a wealth of online resources, KET serves the needs of children at every age and grade level. Additionally, for adult learners, we’re pleased to be partnering with GED Testing Service to provide free national at-home access to our FastForward learning system through the end of June. We hope many of the approximately 19 million Americans and 335,000 Kentuckians without a high school diploma will be able to take advantage of this opportunity to earn their credential. As the unlikeliest of school years draws to a close, we just want to express our sincerest appreciation. Thank you to the teachers. Thank you to the parents. Thank you to the students. It’s always a privilege to be your partner in education. Sincerely,
Shae Hopkins

MORE TO EXPLORE
Downton Abbe y T W O - W E E K E N D M A R AT H O N S H O W I N G
The beloved Masterpiece series about the Crawley family and the fortunes of their English estate is back! But only for a limited time. The entire six seasons of Downton Abbey will air on KET in marathon-style over two weekends, beginning Friday, May 29, and continuing through Sunday, June 7. Fall in love all over again with the award-winning series from Julian Fellowes, with its crackling writing and stellar ensemble cast, led by Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern. The series chronicles the Granthams and their coterie of servants from the years 1912 to 1936, following them through love, scandals, heartbreak and sweeping change. The entire series also is available to stream at your own pace on KET Passport, a member benefit that provides extended access to many of your favorite PBS programs. But don’t delay! The series is available on KET Passport only until June 30. Also, find out during the marathon how you can get the entire series on DVD. And then the Downton Abbey series — much like the Crawley’s post-Edwardian way of life — will be gone.
