or more than 25 years, Dr. Felicia Cumings Smith has helped Kentuckians harness the power of education to improve their and their families’ lives. It’s a calling she’s pursued in a variety of roles: from her early days as a Louisville elementary school teacher, to her leadership within the Kentucky Department of Education and the Jefferson County School District, and more recently as the president of the non-profit organiza-

tion National Center for Families Learning. Among the constants she’s observed throughout her career, she says, is the vital role KET plays in ensuring that everyone in the Commonwealth has equitable access to the educational resources they need to thrive and succeed. “Addressing the needs of people from all walks of life, both urban and rural, is one of the great challenges of any educational system,” Smith said. “KET has a long history
of playing an instrumental role in Kentucky, eliminating the barriers to access and opportunity and ensuring that no one is left behind.” She pointed to KET’s efforts in its early years transmitting classroom instruction over the airwaves to underserved schools across Kentucky. And she noted how, more recently, KET continues to support education in underserved regions, sponsoring family learning workshops and children’s camps in Louisville and Eastern Kentucky.
“That’s why KET is a household name in Kentucky—it’s been a trusted partner for as long as I can remember,” Smith said. In fact, Smith said she still gets recognized by educators for her participation in a KET professional development series from the mid1990s that included her work in the
programs that help parents and children learn together. “One of the things I like most about KET is its focus on improving early literacy and reading skills, which is one of the main ways in which we can change the trajectory of people’s lives, particularly those who have fallen through the cracks

One of the central ways in which families can break the poverty cycle, she said, is through reading and literacy
of the education system,” Smith said. Last year, KET led the development of a “one-stop shop” for new parents to find early childhood development resources, the Let’s Learn Kentucky online hub (LetsLearnKY. org). And other KET initiatives, such as its annual Young Writer’s Contest, which encourages children to write their own original stories and poems (see page 20 for results of this year’s contest), underscore the importance of parents and children learning together. “These are the kinds of resources that really have made a difference not only in the lives of young people but also for the adults working at home with them,” Smith said. “They’re another example of how
TODAY’S KET This month, we’re excited to premiere Evening Edition, a new weekday series dedicated to exploring the events, issues and stories happening throughout the state. Viewers often tell us how much they trust and appreciate our thoughtful approach to public affairs. And because of this, one of the most frequent requests we’ve received has been for a nightly series to cover the day’s newsworthy events. As Kentucky’s only statewide media, KET is uniquely positioned to bridge the gap between local and national news sources by producing a program that truly serves the entirety of our great state. For the past several months, we have provided brief updates through our popular Kentucky Headlines. With Evening Edition we’re able to expand on that well-received concept through a half-hour weeknight series that not only covers the top stories but goes beyond the headlines to provide a better understanding of the issues affecting us all. Support for Evening Edition is thanks in part to the KET Endowment for Kentucky Productions, the O. Leonard Press 21st Century Fund/Endowment for Public Affairs and KET’s Millennium Fund. We appreciate the members of our Commonwealth Fund for KET Board, our supporters and you for helping to make this new service possible. Sincerely,
KET is continually responsive to learners’ needs in Kentucky, creating programs that engage young children and their families to develop reading and literacy skills that they’ll carry throughout their life.”

‘Kentucky E T
his month, KET presents a new weeknight series, Kentucky Edition, that features reporting from across Kentucky examining complex regional and statewide issues in relevant, meaningful ways. From education to the economy, agriculture to healthcare, business to the arts, Kentucky Edition, hosted by Renee Shaw, will summarize the day’s major developments and explore Kentucky’s fascinating people, places and events through stories produced by KET’s award-winning public affairs team. Airing each weekday evening at 6:30/5:30 pm on KET, Kentucky Edition’s objective news coverage and interviews with those affecting public policy will help Kentuckians better understand what’s happening in the Commonwealth and the world beyond. “People continually tell me how much they appreciate that KET is fair, trusted and dependable, and that we inform viewers without telling them what to think,” Shaw said. “I’m proud of the reputation KET has built for thoughtprovoking and comprehensive coverage. And Kentucky Edition builds on that tradition in an exciting way.” As the only series of its kind with a statewide focus, Kentucky Edition will connect us with our neighbors, telling the stories of communities and people who go out of their way to make a positive difference in Kentucky. And the program will visit regions of the Commonwealth

Big Family: The Story of Bluegrass Music
Endeavour on Masterpiece
KET Friday, June 10 • 9/8 pm
KET Sunday, June 19 • 9/8 pm KET2 Wednesday, June 22 • 9/8 pm
Narrated by Ed Helms, this KET produced documentary offers a comprehensive look at the history of bluegrass music—its origins, the pioneers who shaped its sound, and the nature of its worldwide appeal. At the heart of the film is the music itself, with recordings and performance footage from dozens of the genre’s bestknown artists, many of whom share insights into why bluegrass music transcends generational, cultural and geographic boundaries.
Shaun Evans reprises his role as DS Endeavour Morse, alongside Roger Allam as DCI Fred Thursday for a new season of compelling cases, written and created by Russell Lewis. It’s 1971, and Morse and Thursday are called to investigate suspected IRA retaliations, the murder of a local cab driver, and the peculiar killing of a college fellow. As Morse shows signs of a struggle with his inner demons, the team wonders if he is beyond the point of no return.
20 Princess Diana: Who Do You Think She Was? KET Monday, June 20 • 9/8 pm Behind the modern legend that is Diana, Princess of Wales rests an assortment of stories about her childhood and family’s past. Long before she was a Royal, she was a Spencer. This four-part series examines Princess Diana’s childhood as well as her family’s history, discovering who she was and how she engaged with the world before she was a celebrated fixture in the palace and the gaze of the paparazzi.
21 Jon Stewart: The Mark Twain Prize KET Tuesday, June 21 • 9/8 pm Comedian and talk show host Jon Stewart is the 23rd recipient of the Kennedy Center’s Mark Twain Award for lifetime achievement in comedy. Joining the tribute to Stewart are Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Samantha Bee, Olivia Munn, Dave Chappelle, Pete Davidson and Jimmy Kimmel.
27 Hiding in Plain Sight KET Monday, June 27 • 9/8 pm This two-part series from executive producer Ken Burns takes a look at the experiences of more than 20 young Americans living with mental health conditions, shining a light on what life is like for them as well as for the parents, teachers, friends and healthcare providers in their lives. The series presents an unstinting look at both the seemingly insurmountable obstacles faced by those who live with mental disorders and the hope that many have found after the storm.

Kentucky chef tests his skills on new PBS cooking competition
A Kentucky chef with a knack for creating award-winning BBQ sauces and rubs puts his kitchen talents to the test this month on a new PBS cooking competition. Brian Leigh of Bowling Green is one of eight cooks from across the country facing off on The Great American Recipe, an uplifting cooking showdown celebrating the multiculturalism and diversity of flavors that have come to define American cuisine. Leigh, the founder of B.T. Leigh’s Sauces & Rubs, hails from an Ohio farming family that exposed him at an early age to spit-roasts and BBQ as well as more traditional German and Hungarian fare. His cooking career first took shape when he was still working in the IT industry: He shared a brisket he had made (and thought he had ruined) with his co-workers, who so enjoyed his handiwork that they began paying him to continue bringing smoked meats and sauces to the office. Though his seasonings now enjoy nationwide distribution, for The Great American Recipe competition, Leigh said he’s got a lot more up his chef’s sleeve than his BBQ prowess might suggest. “When I moved to Kentucky, I realized I had to step-up my biscuit game, which we didn’t see much of in Ohio,” Leigh said. “And pimento cheese as well. I’ve always loved learning about food from different regions and seeing how those recipes can evolve, borrowing flavors from Caribbean or French traditions and pulling them in to make something new.” Leigh likened his experience on The Great American Recipe to being back in a commercial kitchen in the middle of a rush. “It was certainly stressful, but also so much fun,” Leigh said. “I’ve made great, lifelong friends from the show, and we’d compare notes each night over dinner. It was such an invigorating experience just enjoying and learning from their breadth of culinary knowledge.
