Visions June 2024

Growing up amid the bustle of her family’s wholesale grocery business in London, Ky., Elizabeth McCoy couldn’t help but absorb the life lessons imparted by the long days and impassioned talks around the family’s dinner table: the value of hard work, the importance of

a good education and the collective benefit of doing what’s right for their community.

These were lessons that stayed with McCoy, now the CEO of Planters Bank, when she and her husband settled in Hopkinsville in 1984 and witnessed the city’s efforts to revital-

ize its downtown and build a community that residents were proud to call home.

“Part of the charm of rural Kentucky is all the small and local businesses – the restaurants, distilleries, breweries and shops,” McCoy said. “I love Kentucky, and I want it to

continue to grow and prosper. And that means it’s our responsibility to invest ourselves in our communities and to the people who live there to make it a better place.”

It’s one of the reasons, she said, that she’s a supporter of KET. The network’s around-the-clock coverage of all things Kentucky brings together the disparate regions of the Commonwealth and fosters a statewide dialogue that encourages cooperation and civic participation.

KET HIGHLIGHTS THE THINGS THAT MAKE KENTUCKY SO UNIQUE – THE BEAUTY OF OUR STATE, ITS NATURAL RESOURCES AND INDUSTRIES, AND THE STORIES ABOUT OUR PEOPLE AND PLACES THAT ARE OF INTEREST TO ALL KENTUCKIANS.

“KET does a great job of keeping our state informed about the most important issues of the day, giving us an opportunity to hear directly from state leaders so we can better understand the decisions they’re making that impact us all,” she said. “And KET highlights the things that make Kentucky so unique – the beauty of our state, its natural resources and industries, and the stories about our people and places that are of interest to all Kentuckians.”

KET’s programming — from its children’s content to its series covering science, history and the arts — give viewers both young and old a way to explore the world and embark on a path of lifelong learning. The network’s programs play a role similar to Hopkinsville’s newly refurbished Alhambra Theatre, which runs a community arts initiative that brings in Christian County students to enjoy live performances throughout the year.

“Many of the kids who attend say they’ve never had a chance to see a live theatrical production before, outside of maybe someone singing at their church, so it’s a wonderful opportunity for them to experience something new and broaden their minds,” she said. “KET’s programs like Great Performances, which is one of my favorites, offer that same opportunity for us, giving us a chance to enjoy world class productions that we wouldn’t be able to see otherwise.”

And best of all, she added, KET keeps Kentuckians connected on what’s happening in the different regions of the state, whether highlighting great stories on Kentucky Life about the Commonwealth’s most intriguing people and places or covering breaking news and state issues on programs such as Kentucky Edition and Kentucky Tonight

“In Hopkinsville, our local media is heavily oriented toward Tennessee and Illinois, so there’s a lot happening in Kentucky that we wouldn’t know about if it weren’t for KET,” McCoy said. “KET is one of the things that’s unique and special to Kentucky. It’s truly a wonderful part of the Commonwealth.”

TODAY’S KET

Just as many of us welcome the warmer months, we at KET look forward to spending more time out in the field and on location in our beautiful Commonwealth.

This month, our public affairs team will roll into Hopkinsville for an exciting threeday stop at the Alhambra Theatre where a special episode of Kentucky Tonight will be taped as well as regional stories for Kentucky Edition . Later in the summer, we’ll be bringing you these programs from Owensboro at the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum and in August, we’ll be in Northern Kentucky.

Of course, throughout the year, KET’s blue and white vans can be seen on the road in all parts of the state traveling to capture stories for Kentucky Life , The Farmer & The Foodie and other special programs. If you happen to see our crew, please say hello, snap a photo and tag us on Facebook or on Instagram at @KentuckyEducationalTV. We appreciate your support and hope to see you soon!

Shae Hopkins KET Executive Director and CEO Sincerely,

KET Forum looks at healthy aging

As part of KET's Next Chapter initiative that elevates the rewards and challenges of growing older, Dr. Wayne Tuckson and an expert panel discuss ways to promote optimal health as we age with maintenance of physical, social and mental wellness practices.

Healthy Aging: A KET Forum

KET Monday, June 3 • 8/7 pm

KET Monday, June 10 • 5/4 pm

Ask What They Want

Growing older can be a gift.

But one circumstance of aging that can alter your perspective is decision making.

“I don’t know when it happened. I used to make my own decisions. But now people talk about me, not to me,” said 86-year-old Nora Lane. “I just wish they’d ask what I want.”

It’s a no-win situation that can leave older adults angry or intimidated and their children fearful or frustrated.

Most Important? It Depends on Who You Ask

Debbie Howard, co-founder of the marketing agency Senior Living Smart, said most of us want the same four things in life: independence, choice, safety and care.

The problem? Older parents and their adult children rank them differently.

“Older adults prioritize their independence and choice,” Howard said. “Sons and daughters prioritize care and safety.”

This collision of ideologies often leads to parents digging in to remain self-reliant and adult children thinking they know what’s best.

“We want our parents to be safe, but when we try and protect them, we might also take away their voice,” said Penny Cook, president and CEO of Pioneer Network. “When we adopt that attitude, we may not honor what they want or what they think.”

What the Adult Child Can Do

The first step an adult child can take is to acknowledge the difference between caring and control.

“When we’re scared, being in control makes us feel better,” said aging expert Amy O’Rourke, author of The Fragile Years. “Learn to let go. Sometimes the adult child has to accept that they don’t have control, even if you fear a catastrophe is coming.”

Other ways to honor your parent’s choices include:

• Recognize that age doesn’t make a parent incapable of making decisions.

• Get to know your parents as people and learn their beliefs about growing older. Ask them how they feel and what they think.,

• Don’t try to reverse the roles of parent and child. Respect and accept that your parents know what is best for them, even if you disagree.

• Understand that parents know when they need help — but can struggle to accept it. Don’t bring bigger solutions than needed. Ask first.

The relationship between parents and their children is a fine dance. How can they help each other without stepping on toes? For the adult child — acknowledge that growing older isn’t easy. Express your love and gratitude for the presence your parents have had in your life, O’Rourke said.
