MA H 2021 MARC CH
s a young high school math teacher in Owensboro, Martha Clark witnessed how a few students struggled with their classwork and how a little extra attention often went a long way toward helping them regain their footing. Later, after Clark founded a successful accounting firm, her teaching experiences stayed with her, guiding her as she got involved in local charities and leading her to support those that focused on educational causes. “I was blessed to have had a good education, and it opened a lot of doors for me,” Clark said. “I’d like for others to enjoy similar opportunities because it’s hard to measure what a huge difference a little education can make in people’s lives.” Her love of all things education also explains her support of KET, which she said plays a pivotal statewide role, helping young learners get off to a strong start. “KET is so important, particularly at an early age, because it helps young minds grow,” Clark said. “And no matter where you live, whether in a rural area or inner city, there will be children in need. So I consider my support
KET IS SO IMPORTANT, PARTICULARLY AT AN EARLY AGE, BECAUSE IT HELPS YOUNG MINDS GROW. SO I CONSIDER MY SUPPORT OF KET TO BE A LIFELONG INVESTMENT INTO THE EDUCATION OF OUR COMMONWEALTH. of KET to be a lifelong investment into the education of our Commonwealth.” Clark points to KET’s efforts during the pandemic, furnishing educational tools such as News Quiz and other online resources found on PBS LearningMedia to teachers to help with distance learning lesson plans. And KET’s move to augment its daytime lineup with children’s educational programs offered a measure of relief for parents struggling to juggle their work and home responsibilities, she said. “During the COVID lockdown, KET really made a special contribution to our state,” Clark said. “With so much going on at the time, it would be easy for a lot of kids to fall through the cracks. So just by offering parents a positive and educational outlet for children, I’m sure it made a huge difference in so many households.” Clark, who retired from her accounting firm Martha F. Clark & Associates in 2005, continues to stay busy in her hometown of Owensboro, thanks to her devotion to so many philanthropic organizations. She only recently stepped aside from Impact 100 Owensboro, a
group she co-founded 15 years ago that encourages women in her area to pool their donations in support of local causes. She also serves as the administrator for the John B. & Brownie Young Memorial Scholarship. “I get involved because I’d like to make the world a better place,” Clark said. “And so much of that is just caring about the less fortunate and helping them find opportunities to get them started. And I think education is key to doing that.” She adds that she’s grateful for KET’s many educational tools that likewise help people make a fresh start — resources such as FastForward, which helps people prepare for the GED® test, and educational programs such as Workplace Essential Skills, which offers career skills training for those entering a new work field. “I don’t think KET gets enough credit for its educational outreach and resources,” Clark said. “But KET does so much to provide educational opportunities for the young people of Kentucky. And we all know that a little bit of education can go a long way.”
March is usually a particularly exciting time at KET, when our supporters and volunteers from around the state come together for our premier annual membership drive, TeleFund. However, this March is certainly not the same, as it marks a year since the world changed for us all. As we continue to take precautions against COVID-19, and our volunteers are unable to be in the studio, we want you to know that, although TeleFund may look a little different this year, your support is more important than ever. Thanks to generous friends like Martha Clark and many others who’ve recognized the additional needs created by this pandemic, our commitment to the many communities we serve has never been stronger — from helping teachers and parents with at-home learning to providing critical health information, as well as the many engaging programs that have been enjoyed by viewers spending more time at home. Your contributions directly support the purchase of programs from PBS, including favorites like Masterpiece, PBS NewsHour, Antiques Roadshow, Nature and Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood – and enable KET to purchase additional programs from other sources, like Rick Steves, America’s Test Kitchen, Doc Martin, and our popular Movie Classics series. As we invite you to contribute during TeleFund, we thank you, and everyone, who supports the quality, trusted educational programs and services provided by KET… it’s made possible by viewers like you! Sincerely,
Shae Hopkins
KET Executive Director and CEO

Double the Impact of your donation Did you know that your KET membership contribution could be doubled — or even tripled? Many companies sponsor matching gift programs to encourage employees, retirees and/or spouses to contribute to charitable organizations. KET now offers a search engine to quickly check whether your employer offers a matching gift program. The results link to your employer’s gift form so you can submit your matching gift request within minutes. To learn more and find your employer’s matching gift program, visit KET.org/MatchingGifts.
Virtual field trips to Kentucky State Capitol now available In a typical year, hundreds of Kentucky students make the trek to Frankfort to visit the Kentucky State Capitol. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the Capitol has been closed to in-person tours since March 2020. However, students can now take a virtual trip there, thanks to new video tours from KET. Our cameras were allowed in parts of the Capitol late last year — with safe social distancing — to create a new Electronic Field Trip to the Capitol. The three short videos cover the history of state government, the art and sculptures found in the Capitol, and the Capitol’s architecture. Built in 1910, the Capitol houses the General Assembly, Kentucky Supreme Court and the governor’s office. Students will get a closeup look at the Rotunda, the State Reception Room, the legislative chambers, the First Ladies in Miniature doll collection and more. For more information, visit KET.org/education.
New Virtual Learning Webinars help engage students KET’s education consultants, as well as an assortment of all-star Kentucky educators, have put together a series of virtual learning webinars designed to help teachers engage students and discover ways to incorporate new resources for students all grade levels. The webinars address topics such as using tech to achieve one’s teaching goals, teaching students how government works, monitoring virtual classroom participation and incorporating educational games into one’s curriculum. The live sessions are approved for professional development and ECE-TRIS credit. For more info, visit KET.org/virtual-learning. 20 VISION S
