OR 30 YEARS, NANCY THAMES ran the AmeriCorps program at Eastern Kentucky University, helping Kentucky communities with local public service projects. She worked with dozens of school districts each year, bringing in college tutors to help those struggling with their literacy skills or grappling with a drug addiction. The experience, she says, taught her a lot about Kentucky — and likewise about the role that education plays in helping people change their lives for the better. And it was working in those communities, she says, where she recognized that KET was something more than just a public television network. “Education has always been very important in my life,” Thames said. “And getting to see the big picture of how KET works closely with schools and teachers, going into communities and helping people improve their lives, that’s something that really resonated with me.” The kinship she shared for KET, she said, ultimately prompted her in the late 1990s to join the Friends of KET board, a network of community volunteers who help with KET’s local outreach and fundraising efforts. After more than 20 years on the board (and serving in every major leadership position, from secretary to president), Thames says feels honored to represent

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of The Friends of KET — a dedicated group of volunteers, spread across the Commonwealth, who provide a direct, daily connection to the many communities we serve. From Paducah to Pikeville, these dynamic individuals help in a variety of ways, including advocacy, promotion and, most importantly, friend-raising. They have volunteered during TeleFund for decades and are known for their enthusiastic calls to family and friends soliciting pledges of support. Our Friends host an annual day at the state capitol, assist at events like Super Saturday and the KET Day at the State Fair, secure auction items for Summer Celebration, and help host KET events in their communities. The Friends also serve as a continuous focus group, providing important insights and feedback on our programs and services. As one of the most active and effective such groups in public media, The Friends of KET have received national recognition for their efforts and impact. We salute and thank these outstanding ambassadors and are grateful for their endless passion, resourcefulness and, most of all, their friendship. Sincerely,
Shae Hopkins

Remembering Al Smith, who hosted ‘Comment on Kentucky’ for 33 years KET fondly remembers Al Smith, the original and long-running host of Comment on Kentucky, who died in March at age 94. In 1974, Smith was the manager of a chain of rural weekly newspapers in Russellville when KET founder O. Leonard Press selected him to host the new KET public affairs program Comment on Kentucky, which featured journalists from across the Commonwealth discussing the news of the day. Smith would go on to host the program until his retirement in 2007. “Through his more than 30 years as host of Comment on Kentucky, Al established KET as the place to be on Friday nights,” said Shae Hopkins, KET’s executive director and CEO. “Known for his many colorful stories, Al’s passion for addressing the issues facing Kentuckians fueled a remarkable career in journalism.” “His love of our Commonwealth was undeniable,” said Renee Shaw, who in 1998 came on board as a producer for Comment. “And the forum he created to debate its issues and celebrate its triumphs remains the gold standard by which the rest of us strive.”

New KIDS puppet series inspired by Fred Rogers A new puppet series inspired by the funny, quirky side of children’s television pioneer Fred Rogers premieres this month on KET. Donkey Hodie, aimed at children ages 3-5, follows the adventures of its title character – a yellow donkey with a pink mohawk who’s also the granddaughter of the original Donkey Hodie character from Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. Every episode is set in the whimsical land of Someplace Else, where Donkey Hodie and her pals empower preschoolers to dream big, overcome obstacles and be resourceful as they discover they can solve problems on their own.
