FAMILIES & CAREGIVERS

NAVIGATING

EXTRAORDINARY TIMES TOGETHER

With the urgent need for at-home learning resources to help parents and caregivers while schools are closed, KET developed a free toolkit filled with high-quality educational resources for students of all ages at KET.org/learnathome. And beginning in March, KET’s weekday daytime lineup on our main channel began broadcasting educational programs for all grade levels. Featuring trusted PBS KIDS favorites and PBS programs, the lineup aligns with subject- and grade-level learning for PreK through 12th grade. For our littlest learners, the 24/7 KET PBS KIDS channel — always free on air and online — provides programs from the #1 most-trusted network for children’s content. And for our adult learners, through June 1, KET is providing free access to the high-school equivalency study system FastForward and the professional preparation resource Workplace Essential Skills at KET.org/adulted.

I hope that we’ve been a source of comfort, information and a sense of connection that we all need right now. COVID-19 is a public health crisis that has impacted us all. As we each do our part to help make things better, it reminds me of Fred Rogers when he said, “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping. ‘” There are certainly no greater helpers than those on the frontlines: the healthcare providers, first responders, delivery drivers, grocery store workers and others, as well as the teachers, caring neighbors and all those doing what they can to provide aid and support. And those of you who are at home — you too are doing your part. Please continue to take good care of yourself. We’re here for you and wish you well. Sincerely,

MAY 2 020

Head into the unknown with adventurer Steve Backshall as he journeys to the world’s last unexplored places. Backshall pursues incredible journeys and world firsts — unclimbed peaks, unexplored cave systems and uncharted landscapes — setting foot where no human has been before. Whether free-diving in underground river systems or descending deep into the caves of the Maya underworld, these expeditions push Backshall and his expert crew to the limit.

Expedition with Steve Backshall KET Wednesdays, beginning May 6 • 10/9 pm KET2 Sundays, beginning May 10 • 10/9 pm

ANIMALS UNDERCOVER DISGUISED CAMERAS REVEAL THE SECRET LIVES OF WILDLIFE In this funny, four-part series from Nature, more than 50 animatronic spy cameras — all disguised as animals — are deployed to secretly record behavior in the wild. The footage recorded by these robotic look-alikes reveals that animals have emotions similar to humans, with the capacity to

love, grieve, deceive and invent. Meet the elephant aunts who act as midwives, the bowerbirds gathering trinkets to impress the ladies, the hippos having pedicures, the monkeys getting drunk and disorderly, and the chimp policemen laying down the law.

4 American Experience: George W. Bush KET Begins Monday, May 4 • 9/8 pm KET2 Begins Monday, May 11 • 7/6 pm This two-part biography explores the fascinating life and tumultuous presidency of George W. Bush. Part One chronicles Bush’s unorthodox road to the White House, emerging after one of the most contested election races in American history. Part Two focuses on the ensuing war in Iraq and Bush’s second term, as he confronted the devastating impact of Hurricane Katrina and the most serious financial crisis since the Great Depression.

MAY 2020

11 Asian Americans KET Begins Monday, May 11 • 9/8 pm KET2 Begins Monday, May 18 • 9/8 pm Asian Americans are the fastest-growing ethnic group in the United States. This five-part series examines the significant role Asian Americans played in shaping American history and identity, from the first wave of Asian immigrants in the 1850s, to the identity politics during the social and cultural turmoil of the twentieth century, to the refugee crises in the modern era.

15 Great Performances: Leonard Bernstein Mass KET Friday, May 15 • 9:30/8:30 pm KET2 Sunday, May 17 • 8/7 pm Enjoy Ravinia Festival’s production of Leonard Bernstein’s theater piece, starring Tony Award-winning baritone Paulo Szot (Lincoln Center Theater’s South Pacific) and conductor Marin Alsop, who once again leads the hundreds of artists onstage, from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra to the Highland Park High School Marching Band.

18 Created Equal: Clarence Thomas In His Own Words KET Monday, May 18 • 9/8 pm Clarence Thomas remains a controversial figure — loved by some, reviled by others. In this film, Justice Thomas tells his life story, looking directly at the camera, speaking frankly to the audience. Unscripted and without narration, the documentary takes the viewer through this complex and often painful life, dealing with race, faith, power, jurisprudence, and personal resilience.

24 National Memorial Day Concert KET Sunday, May 24 • 8/7 pm KET2 Monday, May 25 • 9/8 pm Tune in for the 31st annual broadcast of America’s national night of remembrance, honoring the service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform. The concert features uplifting musical performances, documentary footage and dramatic readings that honor the real-life stories of service members, veterans and their families from across the services, spanning the broad history of the nation’s military conflicts.

31 Royal House of Windsor KET Sunday, May 31 • 8/7 pm This six-part series investigates how the British royal family was able to survive four generations of crisis. The story begins in 1917, when King George V takes on the British name Windsor to sound more British (and less German), and traces the family lineage through Queen Victoria to Kate Middleton. It’s an improbable tale of triumph, one marked by ruthlessness, pragmatism, and sometimes sheer good luck.

M AY 2020

PBS’ American Portrait project encourages Americans from all walks of life to tell their stories in their own unique way, contributing to an ever-changing patchwork exploring our shared ideals and challenges, our hopes and fears, and our evolving sense of community. Using prompts such as “I never expected ...,” “I was raised to believe ...,” ‘I took a risk when ...” and many more, dozens of Kentuckians have already shared their stories through videos and images. Visit PBS.org/american-portrait for more details and to share your story.

The nation’s favorite books from ‘The Great American Read’ In another national initiative, PBS unveiled a list of America’s 100 best-loved novels as part of its Great American Read initiative. The project was designed to celebrate the joys of reading and to explore what our favorite novels say about us as a nation and why these stories continue to resonate today. In these times, with much of the globe practicing social distancing, there are still worlds to explore and characters to befriend through the pages of your favorite book. Here’s the top ten as voted on by America: To Kill a Mockingbird — Harper Lee Outlander (series) — Diana Gabaldon Harry Potter (series) — J.K. Rowling Pride and Prejudice — Jane Austen The Lord of the Rings (series) — J.R.R. Tolkien Gone with the Wind — Margaret Mitchell Charlotte’s Web — E.B. White Little Women — Louisa May Alcott The Chronicles of Narnia (series) — C.S. Lewis Jane Eyre — Charlotte Bronte

In 1945, Kentucky soldier Garlin M. Conner offered the ultimate sacrifice. Finding himself behind enemy lines in the French province of Alsace, he called in artillery on his forward position, hoping to save his battalion. Conner somehow survived that day. He would ultimately become one of the most decorated American soldiers of World War II, but his story of heroism went undocumented — that is until his Kentucky community refused to let his sacrifice be forgotten. After Conner's death in 1998, his community rallied to bring his story to light. And in 2019, President Trump presented the Medal of Honor to Conner’s widow, who still lived on their Clinton County farm.
