A NEW SEASON

PLUS The story of Kentucky’s midwives in the mountains

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Striving for a healthy Kentucky

T

he COVID-19 pandemic has upended much of the way of life in Kentucky, but it’s also served to underscore the essential role that “good health” plays in so many Kentuckians’ lives, said Ben Chandler, president and CEO of the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky. “Good health is one of those things that we usually take for granted until we don’t have it — and then we understand very quickly how utterly crucial it is,” Chandler said. “Ultimately, it’s the fulcrum of everything we do in life.” The journey to good health isn’t easy, but it’s made more manageable if you have good information, Chandler said. That’s why, over the past 15 years, the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky has regularly provided funding for a variety of KET-produced documentaries and other programs taking an in-depth look at some of the Commonwealth’s most pressing health concerns — productions such as the Emmy-winning Undiagnosed: The Diabetes Epidemic and the Emmynominated Born Too Soon, which examined the effects of premature birth in Kentucky.

“KET is the public’s premiere outlet for health information in Kentucky,” he said. “It’s non-partisan. It’s evenhanded. And it has a long track record for giving us the facts. It really is a tremendous resource for learning how Kentucky can become a healthier community.” Compared with other states, Kentucky certainly has its share of health challenges. It has the highest cancer in-

cidence and mortality rates in the nation — rates largely attributable to smoking and lung cancer. And it has some of the highest rates of heart disease, obesity and diabetes. These health problems, Chandler said, have bedeviled the Commonwealth for a long time. And they stem in some measure from what he calls the “social determinants of health” — the underlying environmental and social

conditions in which people live and work. “A lot of Kentucky’s problems have to do with education and poverty,” Chandler said. “And these are problems that can’t be solved unless you’re informed on the issues and talk about them in meaningful ways.” KET regularly “trains a spotlight” on many of these underlying issues through programs such as Kentucky Health, which addresses health care disparities, and KET Forums, which has examined such topics as youth mental health, foster care and violent crime. And the information these programs share, Chandler said, has been very helpful in improving the quality of life for Kentuckians. “There are a lot of competing discussions — so it’s hard for people to know whom to trust,” Chandler said. “But that’s the wonderful thing about KET. It presents all the arguments, and you know the information you’re getting is reliable and trustworthy. “A lot of TV networks get viewership by being controversial — telling stories that make peoples’ eyes pop — and the truth sometimes is a casualty of that process,” Chandler added. “But KET doesn’t do that. It strives to educate and improve the lives of Kentuckians by providing them with the facts they need. And in this environment, we need that more than ever.”

TODAY’S KET This month we’re proud to share our latest documentary, Angels on Horseback: Midwives in the Mountains. Not only does it examine a fascinating part of Kentucky’s history, it tells an inspiring story of perseverance to help improve health outcomes. Made possible with funding from the KET Endowment for Kentucky Productions, this special program will also be seen nationally on PBS stations throughout the country. Just as we applaud the dedication of those early brave nurses, we appreciate the commitment and hard work of today’s nurses and the many others working and serving in healthcare. In all we do, KET remains committed to providing trustworthy, reliable information. This includes our in-depth specials and weekly Kentucky Health series. Our resources for children, parents, caregivers and educators emphasizing activity and nutrition, as well as our new tools to help with social and emotional learning. And our ongoing coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic. We thank you for trusting and supporting KET. Please be well,

Shae Hopkins KET Executive Director and CEO

COVER STORY

HEALTHCARE BY HORSEBACK: MATERNAL CARE IN THE MOUNTAINS P

rior to new tales of the fictional midwives of Nonnatus House this month, discover the fascinating history of the real-life midwives who made an impact on Eastern Kentucky health nearly a century ago. In 1925, a team of spirited nurse-midwives from across the globe came to the mountains of Leslie County, Kentucky, to demonstrate the possibilities of providing healthcare to rural America. Utilizing horses as transportation over the mountainous terrain, the dedicated nurse-midwives markedly improved the area’s maternal and infant mortality rates to be among the lowest in the nation. Angels on Horseback: Midwives in the Mountains, a new film from KET, tells the story behind the founding of the Frontier Nursing Service. The one-hour documentary will be available for streaming at KET.org and on the PBS Video app after its premiere. 4

After the deaths of her first husband and two children from her second marriage, Mary Carson Breckinridge found solace in the nursing profession and became a leading voice in maternal and family healthcare. Unsuccessful in securing government funding for her pilot project, Breckinridge instead used her own inheritance money to kickstart her demonstration of the service. By 1937, the Frontier Nursing Service and its neighbors had built a thriving healthcare service and safely delivered nearly 3,000 babies. Angels on Horseback: Midwives in the Mountains is funded in part by The KET Endowment for Kentucky Productions.

NEW KET FORUM EXAMINES CHILDBIRTH AND MATERNAL HEALTH The maternal health issues confronted in the mountains of eastern Kentucky by Mary Breckinridge and her team of nurse-midwives nearly 100 years ago continue to challenge the region and state today. Join KET this month for a special forum, hosted by Renee Shaw, that examines Kentucky’s maternal health and explores what might be done to improve the childbirth process and health outcomes in both rural and urban areas. The Forum features a panel of health industry professionals — childbirth advocates, OB-GYNs, midwives and hospital officials — who will discuss how we can expand the childbirth options available to women, the importance of culturally-sensitive care and what might be done to improve the experience for all.

NEW SEASONS OF FAN FAVORITES

Midwives scramble to keep Nonnatus House financially afloat One of KET’s most watched programs is back with a new season! The year is 1966. And it’s a trying time for the midwives of Nonnatus House in London’s East end. They’re in a bit of a financial quandary, and Trixie and Sister Julienne are determined to steer the house back into solvency. There’s also the stir of protests, as the women’s rights movement intensifies. Sister Frances hopes to engage but realizes she’ll need to be a little less spiritual if she’s to connect with the local women. Meanwhile, Nonnatus House welcomes four new pupil midwives, including Nancy Corrigan (Megan Cusask), who makes quite an impression on the group.

At age 14, every child attending school in Germany is brought face to face with the nation’s past, confronting the reality of the Holocaust for the very first time. Filmed over five years, this program follows four children as they experience Holocaust education in the public school system in Germany, even as the xenophobic views of the country’s far-right have mounted a resurgence.

Five hundred years ago, Ferdinand Magellan and his crew set sail to gain control of the global spice trade. What resulted was the first circumnavigation of the earth, laying the groundwork for colonization and globalization still felt today. This program takes a fresh look at the evidence of that fateful voyage, using investigative techniques and forensic science to debunk long-held myths.

SEL learning helps students understand their emotions Children and teens experience a full range of emotions during a school day. And in challenging times, it’s important for students to understand what they’re feeling and to develop empathy for others. The study of social and emotional learning is designed to help students develop their emotional intelligence and relationship skills. KET recently created a collection of resources, found on PBS LearningMedia, to help parents and educators work with children’s emotional development and engage them in projects and exercises that build their social and emotional learning skills. For more info, visit KET.org/SEL.

New children’s series explores communication and empathy

Alma’s Way, a new animated series from Fred Rogers Productions, makes its debut on KET this month. The program follows the adventures of 6-year-old Alma Rivera, a proud Puerto Rican girl who lives in the Bronx, and is designed to give children ages 4-6 the tools to find their own answers, express what they think and feel, and recognize the unique perspective of others.
