S AN ARCHITECT for Gray Construction, specializing in industrial and manufacturing facility design, Randall Vaughn frequently travels the globe to meet with corporate clients, such as Michelin, Siemens Energy, and Hyundai Motor Manufacturing. But last fall, Vaughn found himself quietly blocking off a two-week period on his schedule, taking pains to ensure he wouldn’t be away on travel. The reason?
knowledge and give me a chance to explore new things.” Vaughn said he gravitates to KET programs such as Kentucky Life and Kentucky Afield because they teach him about the Commonwealth’s singular history, culture, resources and wildlife. And the knowledge he gleans from those programs often comes in handy when he’s traveling, he added. “People ask me all the time about Kentucky and what it’s like,” Vaughn said. “So it’s exciting to be able to speak with conviction about
“That’s what I love about KET’s programming — it takes you to another place, whether it’s in Kentucky or some other period of history. You discover something you didn’t know.” Ken Burns’ eight-part documentary Country Music was scheduled to air on KET — and Vaughn didn’t want to miss a minute of it. “Having grown up in a household where one parent loved country music and the other couldn’t stand it, I knew I didn’t want to miss an episode,” Vaughn said. “It was well worth the effort, too, because the film was so well done. It helped me understand my dad’s appreciation for country music — and for Hank Williams in particular, who was his favorite artist.” It’s that instinct to want to understand the world around him, Vaughn said, that keeps him coming back to KET. “I like to use the term ‘lifelong learning,’” Vaughn said. “And it’s such a key part of what KET is all about. The programs are enlightening. And they help me expand my
my home state — because it’s such a great place, and I love to share what I’ve learned.” KET’s programs, Vaughn said, also give him a lot to talk about even when he’s back home in Lexington. Whenever he’s about to pay a visit to his barber, who shares Vaughn’s love of history and stories about “the Black experience,” the two will exchange texts, pointing out recent KET programs they’ve enjoyed that they can discuss together. “It’s a great way to share that experience with someone else,” Vaughn said. “And that’s what I love about KET’s programming—it takes you to another place, whether it’s in Kentucky or some other period of history. You discover something you didn’t know. And that’s why the older I get, the more I find myself circling back to KET.”
The enormity of the challenges being faced by everyone this year cannot be overstated. During this time, we have responded by providing essential COVID -19 information and by offering instructional resources to help teachers and parents as learning moved from the classroom to the kitchen table. KET has also continued to provide the vast array of quality, educational programs for the entire family that has been so important to everyone who is spending more time at home. We hear every day from viewers who tell us how much they appreciate the opportunity to escape through classic movies and series like Masterpiece and Doc Martin. Some are honing their cooking and gardening skills with P. Allen Smith and Lidia, while others are traveling the Commonwealth, nation and world with Kentucky Life and Rick Steves. And many are relying on trusted programs like Kentucky Tonight and PBS NewsHour to stay abreast of the rapidly changing current events. It is with this in mind that we want to give a special thank-you to all those whose investments in KET help make these programs and resources possible. At this uniquely challenging time, we want you to know how much we appreciate your watching and supporting KET. Thank you. Sincerely,
Shae Hopkins

KET Wednesday, Oct. 14 • 9/8 pm
For animals in Mozambique’s Gorongosa National Park, the normal balance of competition was upended when a war wiped out the top predators. The remaining animals didn’t simply grow in numbers — they began behaving in unusual ways, veering outside their typical territories and feeding patterns. Nova joins a team of scientists as they reintroduce wild dogs to Gorongosa to find out if restoring the park’s “landscape of fear” can restore balance to an entire ecosystem. Nova: Touching the Asteroid
KET Wednesday, Oct. 21 • 9/8 pm
In the fall of 2020, a NASA spacecraft called OSIRIS-REx will attempt to reach out and grab a piece of an asteroid named Bennu and bring it back to Earth. Nova takes you inside the mission as the team plans its risky maneuver, hoping to gain insight into Earth’s own origins — and to learn to defend against rogue asteroids that may one day threaten our planet.

Learning kits encourage kids to continue their summer reading Thousands of Kentucky kids got a mid-summer educational boost when they received KET Summer Learning Kits, featuring a packet of activities as well as two children’s books. Some 5,000 learning kits, designed for children ages 3-8, were distributed to families through Family Resource and Youth Service Centers across Kentucky. The kits, funded by a generous donor, offer families a variety of fun, hands-on learning resources. The activity booklet can be downloaded at KET.org/learnathomebooklet.
New interactive lessons show students how math and writing skills apply to real life KET has created a new collection of interactive lessons that allow students to explore the age-old question “When will I ever use this?” while reviewing essential skills in math and language arts. Aimed at students in grades 6-12, Skills on Demand helps students brush up on their math and writing skills while also showing how the principles apply in real life scenarios. The lessons, which are housed at PBS LearningMedia, tackle subjects such as finding the volume of geometric shapes to employing proper sentence and paragraph structure. The collection may be found at KET.pbslearningmedia.org.
