KEEPING KENTUCKY

Being an informed voter –and citizen – might seem easier today than ever before given the number of news and politics sources available. But there’s also a risk of being exposed to only a single opinion or viewpoint.

That is why two political leaders from different sides of the aisle say KET is essential for providing facts on the issues important to Kentuck ians while giving voice to a variety of perspectives.

“You can get news anywhere

nowadays, but a lot of the time there’s really no check on what’s considered news and what’s consid ered opinion,” said Colmon Elridge, chairman of the Kentucky Demo cratic Party. “What distinguishes KET is there’s an integrity to the

INFORMED

work. KET really does care about getting it right. And KET’s values don’t shift based on the political cli mate. If you’re a voter in Kentucky, you know you can come to KET and get a non-biased take on what’s going on in Frankfort and across the Commonwealth.”

J. McCauley “Mac” Brown, chairman of the Republican Party of Kentucky, agreed.

“KET programs, such as Ken tucky Tonight and Comment on Kentucky, work hard to bring out all sides of the story, which gives people better insight on the issues so they can make up their own minds,” Brown said. “That’s really important in today’s world because there’s far too much commentary and not near ly enough discussion of the facts.”

As election day draws near, the two party leaders say it’s important that Kentucky voters not only understand the issues facing the Commonwealth but also get to know their elected officials. KET’s cover age of the General Assembly pro vides a front-row seat to the activity in Frankfort, they said, and its public affairs programs, such as Kentucky Edition and Kentucky Tonight, host ed by Renee Shaw, offer important context and a variety of perspectives on the week’s top stories.

“KET has great coverage, and it really enables you to be there, seeing government in action,” said Brown, adding that he uses KET to stay on top of what’s happening in Frank fort while he travels throughout the state. “I am constantly tuning in to see what’s going on and understand how bills are being moved or what’s being said. KET’s coverage helps Kentuckians get to know their lead

ers, which is so important for us all because what happens in Frankfort affects all our lives, every day.”

Elridge, who grew up watching KET’s Al Smith and Bill Goodman and credits KET’s public affairs programs for cultivating his love of politics, said KET continues to be an indispensable part of his weekly routine.

“For staying connected on what’s going on politically in Kentucky and the country, KET is essential,” Elridge said. “And as chairman, I consider KET must-watch television because you get to see how local and world events are shaping politics and policy in Frankfort. And that access allows us all of us to make more informed decisions about who we vote for.”

Both Brown and Elridge also say they value KET’s statewide take on the issues, adding that Kentucky’s size and geographic and economic diversity sometimes makes it dif ficult for the various regions of the state to come together.

“One of the beautiful things about KET and programs like Kentucky Tonight is that it’s a public forum for the state,” Brown said. “People like to say the divide in Kentucky is between Republicans and Democrats, but it’s truly more of a rural versus urban divide. And it’s not that one side is right or wrong, but rather that they have different problems. So we need to respect the fact that these problems exist and figure out how we can work together. And KET works hard to do that, providing a tremendous public service to Kentucky.”

TODAY’S KET

One of the fundamental ways KET serves the Commonwealth is through our trusted public affairs programming.

National and international events are covered by award-winning programs including PBS NewsHour , BBC News , Frontline and others.

And as Kentucky’s only statewide media network, KET provides coverage closer to home through unparalleled access to the General Assembly, important discussions on Kentucky Tonight , timely events presented throughout the week on Kentucky Edition , and an analysis of the week’s happenings by journalists and reporters on Comment on Kentucky . Our KET Forums take a closer look at wide ranging issues, and Kentucky Health provides important information for everyone.

Additionally, you can count on KET to provide insightful candidate and election coverage. From the campaign trail to the election, from the Capitol in Frankfort to Capitol Hill, KET offers the best and most comprehensive coverage of state and national public affairs.

KET is your source for information, analysis, discussions and more – presented through a wide range of diverse perspectives.

Public Affairs constitutes a cornerstone of our mission, and KET remains dedicated to the tradition of trust that Kentuckians everywhere have come to expect. We invite you to explore KET’s public affairs coverage on-air, online and on social media. We appreciate and value the trust you place in all our services.

The Making of

This month, KET explores the story of the Black experience in America, featuring a new series from Henry Louis Gates, Jr., and a pair of documentaries from filmmaker Stanley Nelson — two of the nation’s most widely celebrated chroniclers of African American history and culture.

BUILDING A BLACK COMMUNITY

This four-part series from Henry Louis Gates, Jr., tells the story of the African American experience through the cultural and social institutions that the Black community created to support one another in the face of discrimination found elsewhere.

The documentary series chronicles the vast social networks and organizations created by and for Black people, beyond the reach of the “White gaze.” For instance, as early as 1775, free Black people in the North and South built towns, established schools and held conventions – creating robust networks to address the political, social and economic needs of the larger Black community.

The series likewise takes viewers into an extraordinary world that showcases Black people’s ability to collectively prosper, defy white supremacy and define Blackness in ways that ultimately transformed America itself: from Black political and cultural movements such as Black Power and Black Twitter to historically Black colleges and universities, creating safe spaces for a community riven by class, race and generational divisions.

“For centuries, ‘the Grapevine’ has connected Black Americans in formal and informal networks not just as a way of communicating but of building and sustaining communities large and small,” said Gates, the program’s host, writer and executive producer. “From churches to fraternal and sororal organizations to Black Twitter, this is the story of the making of Black America and how, in the making, a people did more than survive the onslaught of enslavement and segregation. They redefined America and its cultural gifts to the world.”
