KET FOUNDER O. LEONARD PRESS FOLLOWED HIS VISION FOR A STATEWIDE EDUCATIONAL NETWORK
H
E WAS A VISIONARY and he was an inspiration. He was an outsider who made the Commonwealth his home — and, ultimately, changed it forever. With a dream of bringing quality learning resources to every community across the state, he created KET. And since its debut in 1968, KET has touched countless citizens, both young and old, transforming individuals and the state along the way. O. Leonard Press, KET’s founder and first executive director, died Wednesday, July 31, at the age of 97, leaving behind his wife, Lillian, their son, Lowell, daughter-in-law, Sasha Stoneman Press, and two grandsons, Logan, 20, and Hayden, 17. “Len Press inspired everyone who knew him, especially those who were fortunate to work with him, including myself,” said Shae Hopkins, who was hired by Press in 1986 and became KET’s executive director in 2010. “Len remained KET’s most passionate advocate.” Virginia G. Fox succeeded Press as executive director after his 1991 retirement. “Len Press loved Kentucky and its people very deeply,” said Fox. “No matter what KET project was proposed, his first question was invariably, how will it help Kentucky? What will the return on investment be in human capital? He did not just care for Kentucky, he acted upon his love of Kentucky.

And we and future generations are all better for his labors.” “Across Kentucky, I saw the heroic struggle to provide equal education thwarted by the barrier of unequal resources,” Press recalled in 2011. “It was essential that we harness the power of television to assure the education and enrichment of our people so they would have every possible opportunity. We could not afford to accept less.” The idea for KET was born one winter in the late 1950s when Press, then head of broadcast TV at the University of Kentucky, met Alice Slone, the founder and director of the rural Lott’s Creek Community School in Cordia, which received no state funds and lacked accreditation. “Of course, I’m thinking, ‘Wow — if we could get television in there, they could have the courses they need for accreditation!’” he recalled. At that time, all over the nation, people were making the connection between television and education. Here in Kentucky, Press sought not only to improve basic education in the mountains — but throughout the entire Commonwealth. For several years, Press traveled the state marshalling support for a new television network. In 1962, the General Assembly established the Kentucky Authority for Educational Television and named Press its first executive director.
Six years later, after building a system of transmitters and constructing the network headquarters in Lexington, KET began broadcasting. The network produced and aired educational programs for schools throughout the state. Press hired a cadre of educators to fan out across Kentucky, teaching the teachers how to effectively use TV in the classroom. That personal touch that Press deemed so necessary has informed KET’s education offerings ever since. Press also felt strongly that KET could be used to take aim at Kentucky’s alarming illiteracy rate, as well as its high school dropout rate. Under his leadership, KET launched its GED®-on-TV series, the predecessor of today’s KET FastForward service, which led to KET’s national reputation and eventually to it becoming the country’s largest nonprofit GED publisher. Other important programs and services followed: Comment on Kentucky, and live coverage of the Kentucky General Assembly, KET’s own college telecourses, and a bounty of professional development resources for K-12, early childhood and adulteducation instructors. “We’ve never deviated from the mission Len established for KET,” said Hopkins. “The legacy of Len Press will live on through the millions of lives that have been improved and enriched because of his vision, brilliance, tenacity and goodwill.”
“It was essential that we harness the power of television to assure the education and enrichment of our people so they would have every possible opportunity. We could not afford to accept less.”
Len Press was my friend and mentor. When he hired me as a 29-yearold, I could not imagine the path that lay ahead for me. His support and encouragement along the way are things for which I will be forever grateful. But Len’s positive influence on my life is not a unique instance. Seeing the potential in others and helping them be their best was one of his greatest qualities. This was true for his employees, colleagues around the public television system, his students at the University of Kentucky and so many more. Indeed, this was at the very core of his drive to create KET. He believed in the potential of every child, every student and every person — no matter their circumstance — and educational television was the way to bring every Kentuckian access to education, information and enlightenment to help them realize that potential. Both he and Lillian, his wife and founding director of the Kentucky Governor’s Scholars Program, shared this value. And all of us throughout the Commonwealth are so much better for their work, enthusiasm and unwavering commitment. What a privilege it was to work with and to know Len Press. Sincerely,
Shae Hopkins

THREE CHORDS and the
TRUTH
Starting on September 15, KET is pleased to bring you the next documentary opus from Ken Burns: Country Music. The film follows the evolution of country music over the course of the 20th century, weaving together influences that formed “America’s music.” The story wends its way through Appalachia’s songs of struggle, Texas’ rollicking Western swing, California’s honky-tonks and Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry. It also tells the stories of the fascinating trailblazers who created and shaped its sound, including Bill Monroe, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn, Charley Pride, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Garth Brooks and many more. The 16-hour film, told in two-hour episodes each night, is directed and produced by Burns and his long-time
collaborators, Dayton Duncan and Julie Dunfey. Burns and Duncan are the Emmy-award winning creators of PBS’ most-acclaimed and most-watched documentaries, including The Civil War, Lewis & Clark, Baseball, Jazz, The War, The National Parks: America’s Best Idea and many more. Their new film, much like the music itself, tells the unforgettable tales of hardships and joys shared by everyday people. “At the heart of every great country music song is a story,” Burns said, “As the songwriter Harlan Howard said, ‘It’s three chords and the truth.’” Country Music guides viewers on a journey through history that educates and entertains, providing an intimate look into the creative lives of the women and men who came together to develop an authentic American art form.
“We discovered that country music isn’t –– and never was –– one type of music; it actually is many styles,” Duncan said. “It sprang from diverse roots, and it sprouted many branches. What unites them all is the way the music connects personal stories and elemental experiences with universal themes that every person can relate to.” Duncan, Burns and Dunfey spent eight years researching and producing the film, conducting interviews with more than 100 people, including 40 members of the Country Music Hall of Fame. The film uses more than 3,200 photographs and hours of archival footage, including rare and neverbefore-seen photos and footage of Jimmie Rodgers, Johnny Cash and others.

Australia is a land of diverse beauty with animal characters so enigmatic that most residents don’t know they share their island continent — and their suburban backyard — with them. Using cutting-edge camera technology, this three-part series reveals the challenges these animals must navigate in a land of extremes. The result fills the screen with color, dance, acrobatics, music, mating and murder — all performed by the animals that make Australia a fantastic place.
KET Monday, Sept. 9 • 9/8 pm KET2 Sunday, Sept. 1 • 8/7 pm Narrated by Ed Helms, this KET produced documentary offers a comprehensive look at the history of bluegrass music—its origins, the pioneers who shaped its sound, and the nature of its worldwide appeal. The Durrells in Corfu Season 4 on Masterpiece
The feud between the Hatfields and McCoys is perhaps the most famous family conflict in American history. As legend has it, two neighboring families in the backwoods of Appalachia waged a bloody war against each other over a stolen hog, an illicit romance and longstanding grudges. Once it started, there was nothing to stop the spiral of murder: no social mores against violence, no legal or political institutions in control, no personal religious values holding people back.
KET Friday, Sept. 13 • 9/8 pm KET2 Sunday, Sept. 15 • 8/7 pm
KET Sunday, Sept. 29 • 8/7 pm
Discover the life and career of Rául Juliá in this warm and revealing portrait of the charismatic, groundbreaking actor’s journey — from his native Puerto Rico to the creative hotbed of 1960s New York City, to prominence on Broadway and in Hollywood. Filled with passion, determination and joy, Juliá’s brilliant and daring career was tragically cut short by his untimely death 25 years ago, at age 54.
The Durrells return for a fourth and final season, tracing the eccentric family’s adventures on a Greek isle in the 1930s. The light and lively program takes an uncharacteristically dark turn as the family’s idyllic life on Corfu is interrupted by the outbreak of World War Two. Louisa seeks to salvage her friendship with taxi driver Spiro after their budding romance was cut short by the return of his estranged wife and family.

Educators learn about KET resources at early childhood institute Early childhood professionals from around the state came together in June for three days of professional development at the Early Childhood Institute in Louisville. KET’s Early Childhood Education team, through the Ready to Learn Initiative, brings educational television and digital media resources to children ages 2-8. Their goal is to promote early learning and school readiness, with an emphasis on supporting children from underserved communities. Educators at the institute had the opportunity to learn more about KET’s Early Childhood resources and services by attending four KET-led sessions where the team piloted a new Ready To Learn series. To learn more about KET’s work in early childhood, visit KET.org/education.
KET teaches sciences to Louisville children at day camp
Workplace essential skills courses offered in construction and IT
KET welcomed a group of Louisville children to a five-day summer camp in July filled with learning about STEM-based sciences. The group participated in KET’s Ready Jet Go camp, which was organized in partnership with Neighborhood House, a Louisville-based community center. The week-long event introduced the children to earth and space sciences.
KET is pleased to offer two new Workplace Essentials Skills courses — on construction and IT services. The courses are part of a mobile-friendly study system, offering instruction on the language and math skills needed to be successful in highdemand careers. The courses are contextualized to the specific occupation, showing how and why the skills apply to the field. For more information, visit KET.org/adulted.
Media arts toolkit offers resource for video production Teachers have a new classroom resource for video production training: the KET Media Arts Toolkit. KET traveled the state documenting teachers who are using media arts in their classrooms to engage and inspire their students — and compiled the best lessons into a media arts toolkit. These range from helping students create their own podcasts to tips on flying video drones and using augmented reality. Visit KET.org/mediaarts for more information.
