5:- Case study-1 Community kitchen of terras da costa / Projecto Warehouse, ateliermob These are the living conditions of nearly 500 people – about 100 children – who inhabit an illegal neighborhood in Costa da Caparica. Designated Terras da Costa, this neighborhood is mostly occupied by two communities: of african and romani origin.

It has since been meeting with some of their representatives, and members of the project urban boundaries – an academic project essentially focused on literacy, being developed in the neighborhood at the time –, participated in the process for the election of the first neighborhood commission, and promoted, with the municipality of Almada, the initial meetings between the municipality and the residents.

5:- Case study-1 Community kitchen of terras da costa / Projecto Warehouse, ateliermob Through a participatory process, the people decided that the construction of a community kitchen would be a priority for the improvement of their living conditions. A space that could be shared by all and managed by the dwellers. A place that could offer the basic conditions for living and cooking collectively, with some water and fire extinguishing points. With the community, the neighborhood commission, the association between the atelier mob and project warehouse, part of the wood and members of casa do vapor, with the municipality of almada, and the fundamental support of the calouste gulbenkian foundation, the project and the construction of a community kitchen in terras da costa were carried through. “REIMAGINING PRASAD” ( KITCHEN AND DINING )

6:- Case study-2 Shalom institute dining hall / lehrer architects This project is about using extremely succinct moves to radically transform and ennoble an undistinguished old building, making it into a highperforming centerpiece of a precious 180-acre camp landscape in the Malibu hills. This run-down building has served thousands of campers over its 55-year history. It has been closed off from its context, effectively disconnecting itself from the outdoors for over half a century.

With a limited budget and the virtual certainty of triggering significant environmental regulations with new construction, it was decided to try to save this underperforming, unremarkable building.

THE ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN THESIS 2022 8

6:- Case study-2 Shalom institute dining hall / lehrer architects The solution was to leverage an extraordinary site, an oak-filled riparian valley floor--that has always been disconnected from the interior denying significant access, views and natural light—by dramatically and simply opening the building up, both horizontally to the landscape, and vertically to the sky and the tree tops.

The design focused on green acts such as, taking the dark throwaway building, saving it and permitting nature-air, view, space, and light to permeate the interior, therefore creating a campus center.

Towards a more sustainable environment

congruent efforts have been planned:

Nandigram is an evolving culture. It hopes to represent the microcosm of a larger demonstrable sustainable environment.

ECAD facility is housed in an existing storage warehouse (2, 000 sq. ft.) to be renovated.

Nandigram grounds supplement its everyday food sustenance requirements, including energy requirements produced by solar energy and methane gas.

An outdoor partially covered workspace has also been planned. The warehouse space will be used as a multipurpose space for conferences, workshops, model shop, and meeting space.

Encouraged by its achievements and success over the years, as well as the needs of the society, Nandigram has plans to build an environmental centre for better practices in a liveable ecofriendly world.

Current activities ECAD is planned to promote experimental regional art and craft, research in building material envelop materials, and symbiotic relationship between art, architecture, and nature.

“REIMAGINING PRASAD” ( KITCHEN AND DINING )

Outdoor space will accommodate material research and sculpture workspace. The mission of ECAD is to understand deeprooted characteristics of regional architecture form and purpose. It will reach out to local/regional artisans to promote their craft. The total cost of renovation is estimated at Rs. 8 lakhs ($ 10, 000).

8- Architectural response in the context of Nandigram

I am re-imagining the whole Nandi gram with a new and strong vision in the sense of architecture and livelihood. The current facilities which are available for the people of Nandigram are not sufficient for them so for more amount of facilities in all terms i.e., for ( architectural development, natural resources, expanding or re-imagining the existing architecture) I have re-imagined and re-arranged all the kind Of facilities in the particular spaces for more comfort, to attract more people, and to widen the importance of Nandi gram to the visitors. The existing architecture of the Nandi gram is related to the traditional/regional architecture style so I have contributed my sense of architectural style to make it more attractive and impressive through modern regional architecture which includes the modern and traditional styles of architecture which will help Nandi gram to develop a new vision for their future architectural solutions and their future livelihood. I have done this thesis to understand the existing features of Nandi gram in every sense and to explore the new vision and style of architecture for the future growth and livelihood of Nandi gram people and visitors.

Site selection and analysis

Site photos and tress

I have selected the site where the existing kitchen and dining are located.

Why? I am getting the benefit of the location itself as it easily accessible from all the other spaces in Nandigram.

There are big foliage trees and more dense trees on my site which will help to keep the space much cooler in all the seasons. As the site is nearby the campus road and village road, it will help me to give better access on occasion and special events To keep the importance of kitchen and dining also because it was built by Makrand Dave and Kundanika ben 40 years ago over here on this site. The site is already having enough space for regulating kitchen and dining.

There are many trees in and around my site so my idea is to build the structure between the trees and to develop an interconnection between trees and the structure. I have kept all the existing trees on my site to preserve Nature with more caution and had grown more new trees to enhance the space with trees. I have faced most facades in the north direction and open spaces towards the north to get comfortable light and ventilation. I have also tried to use the sunlight inside my space to get some kind of shadow play which will give an enthusiastic nature to it.

I have made trees part of my structure so that people can experience that they are connected with nature at any point in time. I have tried to make the structure light and inter-connected

1) I started with different orientations of a simple block and tried to keep my maximum facade towards the north direction. 2)

After mapping those trees, I tried to take that inside my structure

3)

I identified the space between the spaces.

4) In this I have separated my spaces through color denotation i) BLUE is for the deck. ii) YELLOW is for dining space. iii) RED is for service space. 5) In the final stage where I have tried roof exploration (Hip roof with dormer profile and with a clear story light in the central part of the hip roof).

17- Plan •

• •

I have a metaphorical sense in my design which is called “MANDAPA”. So as you will see the whole structure represents a MANDAPA. And all the activities of the kitchen and dining area are regulated under the MANDAPA itself to make fewer walls to regulate them. The plan is in linear patterns connected with different wings because the people who will be taking their food on daily basis over there should not experience that they are in a big hall-like space and they should feel comfortable and minimal. I have also separated my service entry as like (kitchen and storage) and main entry. I have kept the service entry in the starting only so that it can be easily accessed and can save time.

16- Site plan • I have oriented the kitchen space toward the east direction because the east light is very important for it. • As you will observe I have provided an important element called “OTLA” in my design on the northern and eastern sides. • I have also provided a deck towards The kitchen side so that in the evening time they can do their activities like chopping, preparation, etc. Over there with the natural feel. • I have also provided an extra space towards the north side of the kitchen so that for any events or occasions they can use that space for preparation for more people and can have easy access from The kitchen also. • As you are sitting inside the structure you can have an open view into all the sides and can feel a direct connection with nature. Ingredients of concrete are easily available in most places. The durability of concrete is very high

Steel is a kind of material that can reduce the structure weight and can reduce the structural members also.

Stone is also a sustainable material as its lifespan is about 40 to 50 years and is in 5km radius of Nandi gram.

Quota stone is also available within a 5 km radius of Nandigram. It is a hard, non-porous, and homogeneous material that can be widely used in different areas.

Mangalore tile is local and regional material and is also available within 5km The radius of Nandigram.
