Landscape design plays a unique and important role in enviromental planning and public visual interaction. It can build a distinguishable image or local characteristics as the landmark for a certain place, promote the value of commercial development projects, combine human being and the environment together, as well as arousing people’s mutal feeling for art and nature. However, many landscape designers are facing a rough challenge: many aspects of landscape design including materials, techniques, artistic expression, professional knowledge and skills are gradually getting similar. Fresh ideas will always be highly adored! This set of books which is full of creativity and inspiration is divided into two volumes: Art+Scape! emphasizes art installation, sculpture and artistic landscape architecture as well as the designs with creative ideas built in the nature and renovated environment, on the other hand, Nature+Scape! tends to stress on natural waterscape, vertical planting and the layout of vegetation as well as designs with natural concepts. All these highly innovative and professional projects featured in the set of books come from notable contemporary landscape designers and artists worldwide. These talented designers along with their acclaiming works make this book a practical and priceless reference for landscape designers and project developers. Furthermore, this set of books also obtains a joint recommendation from a group of world-renowned senior landscape designers and in which they have shared their newly outstanding works.

AALBORG WATERFRONT – LINKING PORT & CITY

170,000 m2

Helene Høyer Mikkelsen, Vibeke Rønnow, C. F. Møller Architects

Aalborg Municipality

The master plan for Aalborg Waterfront links the city’s medieval centre with the adjacent fjord, which has previously been difficult for citizens to access due to the industrial harbour and the associated heavy traffic. By tying in with the openings in the urban fabric, a new relationship between city and fjord is created, and what was formerly a back-side is turned into a new, highly attractive front. The qualities of the approximately one-kilometre stretch of quayside are emphasised with a tree-lined and unusually detailed boulevard to accommodate cyclists and pedestrians. The medieval Aalborg Castle once again becomes the harbour’s centrepiece through the establishment of an extensive green area to frame the historic embankments. At the same time, Aalborg receives a harbour promenade with steps and recessed terraces, allowing people to get close to the water. Various kinds of urban gardens facilitate activities such as markets, ball games and sun-bathing. The aim is to create robust and attractive spaces to benefit many different users. The central activities field was designed to accommodate various games and sports, from beach-volley in the summer to ice skating rink in winter, surrounded by dramatically angled netting and lighting masts. The adjacent gardens are a calm, slightly sunken green space with a dense planting of trees and flowers. The materials chosen are as raw as the fjord itself, including asphalt, rubber, cor-ten steel, concrete and wood, while at the same time containing subtle references to the sea through wavy pavement patterns - an architectural quote of the famous Copacabana beach promenades by Roberto Burle Marx

A spectacular meeting place near Meuse river

Cuijk, the Netherlands

Originated in Roman times, the village of Cuijk can look back at a long history on the Meuse river. Until the fifties of the twentieth century, Cuijk was located directly at the water front, merely protected against high water by a wall. In the fifties a dike was constructed which consequently forced buildings at the Meuse to give way. A main road on top of the dike further cut off the river from the centre of the village. The design concept of the river bank is inspired on the scale and atmosphere of the river. The sturdy wall of steel has become the link between village and river, not by separating the two, but instead by giving both land and water more space. The quay itself is leveled and designed as a plateau of stelcon plates with border lines of corten steel. Whereas the lines provide a subtle layout, the concrete panels show the contours of Roman archaeological finds, such as canals, a bridge pillar as well as explanatory texts. The connection between quay and village centre is first of all created by an underpass of the dike. Besides, near the church, a combination of ramps and stairs is realised, that connects both locations. Via the ramps one can slowly descend to the quay, the intermediate steps offer a quick link between the riverside and the top of the bank. Both ramps and stairs function as a viewing gallery during events, such as the Four Days Marches of Nijmegen. Along the waterfront wooden platforms with furniture are placed. Here visitors can quietly overlook the river. A surprising feature is that the existing port is integrated in the design of the quay by applying the same wooden materialization. The wide wooden arm embraces the river and offers a nice panoramic view.

The memorial park is designed as abstract three-dimensional space, where the paths lead around geometrically cut grass ridges. It is a very abstract illustration of the mountain ridges of the northern border, for which Maister's soldiers fought in the year 1918. The area constitutes of branched communications, which are arranged between the river Savinja and the main road, and enable the access to the river and the settlement. The main elements of the space articulation are the reinforced prefabricates of concrete, which are separating single triangular surfaces and framing the terrain like retaining walls. The multifunctional elevated retaining walls are also resting places view points, which include benches, litter bins and light elements. The elevated parts of walls are transformed into benches, with facade panels on the top. The litter bins are hidden in internal openings of the wall, and are covered with lids of the facade panel in the framework of the benches. The whole embankment is secured against inundation and erosion with solid stone blocks, which protect the park like a stone shield. Concrete prefabricates divide rigid surfaces of the rock embankments. The path leading to the river is because of danger of flooding additionally fortified and paved with concrete prefabricates. The grass terrain along the road ends in the retaining wall, which from the side view presents the abstract form of a mountain ridge and functions as part of the memorial place, as near by stands a sculpture which is composed of several stylized soldiers, and the statue of general Maister with a horse. The sculptures are made from welded metal rods. The abstract wire frame sculpture has the appearance of a sketch, at the same time it forms with the subtle accentuation of key lines of the torso real volume and fullness of the soldiers' bodies.

The City of Bat-Yam

A design with a series of arches and movable furniture, forming a public space between city and sea.

Bat-Yam, Israel

On the way to the Sea” is a project located in between the city and the sea in Bat Yam, designed by Tel Aviv studio Derman Verbakel Architecture. The intervention includes a series of frames and movable furniture which encourage individual interaction and public events. "On the way to the sea" transforms the space that lies between the city and the sea to a place of its own rather than an in-between passage. The way to or from the sea passes through the site but the movement from point A to point B is not the purpose. A series of frames carefully positioned between city edge and sea shore host public activities, creating a new use for this in-between space. The installation invites inhabitants and passers-by to intervene and create opportunities for events and unexpected interactions by manipulating different elements integrated within the frames. In the gap between city and sea, the project encourages collective and individual interactions that range from urban events to beach activities. A series of fixed frames containing movable elements creates a basic infrastructure in which users have the freedom to alter the urban space and fit it to their own private uses. Within the same frame, users can make changes to create very different situations and even fulfill the desire for a private space in the public domain.

A multi-level urban landscape realm wrapped around two buildings drove the design towards a highly architectural outcome.

Melbourne, Australia

ASPECT Studios was responsible for the design to 717 Bourke Street public realm areas on ground floor, level 4 podium and connection to ground floor areas and bridge connection to Southern Cross Station, level 5 podium areas and connections to level 4 and private courtyards on level 4. The design concept looked to seamlessly integrate these podium landscapes with the imposing architectural façade and enveloping canopy form to create a topographical carpet that spreads outwards from the building, blurring the interface between public and private, active and passive, building and ‘landscape’. Wanting to remove the typical 90 degree relationship with landscape and the building ASPECT created a language of tectonic landscape forms, made of ramps, seats, garden beds and decks. The topographical carpet is shifted upwards to form occupiable plinths and platforms, and draw apart to reveal the hidden indigenous vegetation within, an acknowledgement of its location on the edge of a former swamp. The platforms conceal irrigated podium planter boxes connected into the building’s stormwater recycling system that contain copses of drought tolerant Banksia and small Eucalypts with under plantings of native grasses and strappy shrubs. The carpet itself consists of defined bands of stone paving oriented north-south - granite, bluestone, and two colour variations of splitstone – which are broken down into a geometric mosaic pattern to enhance the architectural façade articulation. External lighting and custom drainage strips were also able to be hidden within this build-up at interfaces of paving bands to eliminate the need for drainage grates / pits.

Award-winning architectural landscape studio TROP got the commission to do this project from Central Pattana Group, Thailand's biggest Shopping & Retails Developers. The site is in Chonburi, which means the City of Water. Therefore, without any doubt, water is the designers’ main theme of the design. Central Plaza Chonburi will be the city's biggest shopping mall. The design scope includes the plaza design and the overall streetscape. The first move of the design team is to sculpt the shape of the plaza to be a corner-less space, inspired by the shape of a water drop. Then they lower the street down, ramping it underneath a pedestrian bridge in order to prevent a cross-circulation traffic. The result is quite interesting as the entering cars are descending down, while the people walking on the bridge into the plaza. Along the plaza edge, the design team proposed a water edge. This is to get rid of the guard rail, making the plaza appearance "lighter and floating in the space". Since it is a shopping mall, the designers also have to add some gimmick as a symbol of the project. For Central Chonburi, they arranged a series of giant fish swimming all over the plaza area to attract kids. The Mall is originally targeted at the C+ Group, however, with the high quality of the plaza design, the Mall ends up attract the upper leveled crowd from the nearby cities as well.

Rios Clementi Hale Studios’ design integrates the Metro Portal and Plaza into the fabric of Hollywood Boulevard, creates an environment to satisfy the diverse groups converging there, and links Hollywood’s iconic past to its revitalized present. The program realizes the plaza as an extension of a series of thematic courtyards lining Hollywood Boulevard (such as the ones fronting the landmark Egyptian and Grauman’s Chinese theaters). The design also utilizes the dramatic presence of the Pantages Theater directly across the street as a visual benchmark. The Rios Clementi Hale Studios team incorporates a rich spectrum of colors and patinas into the design—and a boldly differentiated hardscape palette—to contrast and connect project areas. At the east perimeter, a ruby-hued glass-aggregate concrete “red carpet”—suggesting archetypal Hollywood glamour—stretches from the sidewalk’s Walk of Fame through the hotel lobby. On the exterior of the Metro Portal canopy, black granite and concrete walls extend up to wrap a granite slab over the top, making the roof a handsome focal point for W Hotel guests looking down from their rooms. The luminous underside of the canopy is composed of varying tones and translucencies of gold, honey, and amber glass, a patchwork of color and texture inspired by “the yellow brick road.” The gold jewel tones are repeated with terrazzo inset into the concrete plaza pattern. Other details throughout the portal and plaza echo the design’s black and gold motifs—including gold leaf, foil, and crenellation—as well as the black and gold ornamentation on the Pantages’ Art Deco façade.

It may be the first mall remodel project that actually transforms an existing mall into an urban place. The Santa Monica Place changes an obsolete, enclosed, multi-level mall into a dynamic urban heart that celebrates the cultural and geographic openness that makes Santa Monica a great place to live, work, play and visit. Commissioned by Macerich to renovate the outdated mall, The Jerde Partnership set out to create a vibrant and intimate public setting. Blending timeless urban principles that predate conventional malls with its organic approach to retail design, Jerde carefully and intricately wove the project into the existing city fabric. By incorporating forms, materials, and landscaping that are found throughout the city, Jerde enhanced the project’s natural fit, both aesthetically and functionally. The new Santa Monica Place replaces a dead mall with a vibrant, open-air district within thriving downtown Santa Monica. By seamlessly connecting its popular and diverse surrounding uses, creating new public spaces, and attracting a new caliber of retail tenants, it will become the hub of Santa Monica.

ASPECT studios have been selected from 68 entries to design and install a public artwork as a part of the Sydney City Council’s “by George!” Festival. Designed in collaboration with Herbert & Mason and Derlot, the artwork entitled “The Meeting Place” had been in place for 3 months over summer in Little Hunter Street in Sydney’s CBD. THE MEETING PLACE is part architectural installation/ sculpture and social experiment. It is a playful installation which encourages participation and interaction whilst heightening the experience of moving through the urban space of Little Hunter Street. The concept is to create a space within the existing the lane way - two 4m high curtain walls of elastic fabric are fixed to a structural frame and erected along the length of the lane in compressing arcs. The width of the path moves from 0.9m at the entries to 0.7m at the centre. The material adopted has an opacity to it which allows for views through and when lit at night becomes a canvas for revealing movement of people through the space. People have to negotiate their way through the laneway by communication and contact with other people like themselves that are moving in the opposite direction. This social aspect of watching, communicating and negotiating with people will increase positive human contact with a sense of play.

Wind wands - a landmark feature of the newly redeveloped Bull Ring Centre Birmingham - the largest retail-led urban regeneration project in Europe. The wind wands are constructed out of carbon fibre and stainless steel and their design is a response to both the strong urban axis between the St. Martins Square and the newly created Rotunda Square. The 30m, 25m and 20m high wands emphasise the principle connective vista as well as visually terminate the new square. The wands animate the new square and its surroundings with an almost constant wind induced movement emulating the behavior of trees and plants. The mirror polished stainless steel leaves when still form a helical pattern and when swaying move into the direction of the masts movement. The wind wands are internally illuminated at their base whilst the top section of each mast has an illuminated tip and a matrix of LED light points. The night time presence of the light wands is further emphasised LED illumination of the “tramline strips” of black granite.

Carve

municipality The Haque, district Ypenburg-Leidschenveen.

Carve was asked by the municipality of the Hague to design two 'integrated play facilities', playgrounds suitable for children with and without disabilities. How does one design a playground where the difference in play between children with and without disabilities is eliminated? A playground that offers challenges and appeals to children with and without disabilities? In Carve's vision 'playing together' doesn't mean playing next to each other. Van Campenvaart is one of the two playgrounds designed with the capacities of children with a disability in mind, and not their limitations. Every child wants to explore its possibilities and wants to be able to extend its boundaries. Importantly, the playgrounds do not directly show that possible limitations (visual, auditory, physical and mental) have been taken into account. They offer increasing challenges for all children and thereby contribute to play without limitations. With a completely authentic language of form and choice of colour they stimulate curiosity and allow children to discover the extensive playing facilities by and with each other. This new playground is located on an existing lawn and shaped as a folded red blanket with a strong graphic character. By constructing creases between a ramp, several angles are created. The undefined possibilities of the field challenges the boundaries of both (partially)disabled and non-disabled children. Intersecting routes allow children with different abilities to meet and help each other. In the playing-field, different climbing grips and tactile elements have been added, as well as a moving rubber mat. Whisper tubes, a wide slide, a 'concave' turntable and a hammock create additional play elements.

Columbusplein is an urban square typical for the 1920 to 1940’s layout of the city of Amsterdam. Today this part of Amsterdam is given an extensive financial injection to renew and vitalize the public space. Carve was asked to renovate the existing playground, a commission soon to be extended to a redesign of the entire square. This way we were given the opportunity to create an attractive public space for people of all ages and a meeting place for the neighborhood. The elongated square seems to be divided in two parts by the 1980’s building in the middle, on the south side characterized by it’s green appearance and on the north by a already existing playground. By giving up the road in front of the primary school and integrating it into the square, the Columbusplein can now also function as an extension for the adjacent schoolyard, which was already too small. Asphalt surfacing is the binding component connecting the two sides of the square and is a perfect material to skate, roll and bike on. The five-meter wide sidewalks around the asphalt form a recognizable barrier for children. Providing more than enough space and at the same time preventing the children from running on the surrounding streets, without the use of fencing. All street furniture, playground equipment and also the integrated building for the “squaremanager”, were specially designed for this situation. On a formal level, everything had to answer prescriptions concerning the historical urban background of the square. And, moreover the children’s needs and wishes.

The open space concept is an essential issue in the overall project for the new kindergarten in Berlin-Schöneweide. The architecture and the exterior synergetically create a place that literally stands for its name. The Kinder-Garten’s indoor and outdoor relationship goes beyond simple apertures. As a start point a small town square creates a connection between the kindergarten and the surrounding quarter. Here, the painted asphalt gives a greeting welcome into the building. Optimizing the originally small garden part, an almost sculptural ramp doubles outdoor space, as it leads from the upper storey into the garden. It frames the site, dividing it from the street, and assembles all play-equipment in one place—on two levels. The ramp, which structurally connects the outside to the inside of the building, grants easy access into the building and to the play elements, which seem to emerge from out of it. They all reach out into the garden space: a bridge under which there are two swings and a seesaw, a broad slide, a climbing pole, and a play fountain. All of the objects are kept in black and white, in order to have the colours of play be created by the children themselves. While the playful elements are all integrated in the ramp along the site’s edge, the centre of the garden features a set of venerable old trees. Jump, play, hide and seek!

Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas have designed the facility for the dramatic 2009 season of the National Institute of Ancient Drama. An extraordinary debut for the two architects in the sign of the classic scenes have created for the 45th Cycle Classic Performances, scheduled at the Greek Theater in Siracusa from May 9 to June 21 2009. Reality is what we see in the mirror or what is reflected? The design team did not want or thought ever to resolve the dilemma. They thought there is always time to acquire the necessary alchemy to understand the origins and the heart of the emotions. For the architects, the element of reflection and inspiration for the set design was the horizon. "A very simple horizon can speak of what is the landscape, place, and action, for the conscience of the spectators, not today but yesterday." As the landscape and the scenery have changed over time, the intention contained in the set design is the reconstruction of a lost horizon, staged by a "concave blade" that reflects what is going around, which involves the public, which reflects and invites reflection.

Sct Nicolai School Centre from the 1850s is a continuous reincarnation of everything from the traditional Danish school with gyms and schoolyards. With five art houses as the new function the possibility of a new typology of creative and dynamic culture centre emerges. The project evolves with the idea of the schoolyard as the centre, joining the different functions together, an active free space in a more cheerful schoolyard, than the historical version. A yard, creating a base of the different house programs, movies, literature, house of children, craftsmanship and music. Along the west side a continuous wall of corten steel is built along two terraces and a stage/ tribune also made in corten steel. Furthermore different outdoor activity spaces are added to the schoolyard: The Garden of Tales, The City Garden, The Market Square and the Plaza, opening up towards Katrinegade. The tilting terrain in the schoolyard is prevailed and a new enclosing surface of black asphalt is laid out, on which patterns are drawn with thermo plastic and street paint. The schoolyard is designed with a big white drawing on a new layer of black asphalt- as a new drawing board. The project development has been theme based and five groups of users have during the design process participated in concretizing the programming and the future schedule of utilization and maintenance.

PAUL-BRUCHÉSI SCHOOL

Montreal, Canada

This project involved the complete redesign and redevelopment of Montreal’s Paul-Bruchési Elementary School yard. Originally entitled “Blue Yard”, the project is located in the trendy Plateau-Mont-Royal neighbourhood, but was built with very a limited budget. For economic reasons, the school decided to keep the existing asphalt paving and build a new project on top. NIPpaysage decided to work within this requirement by exploring large patches of painted colors and softer surfaces to give the site a well-deserved landscape makeover. The result was achieved by implementing a strong coloured scheme to organise and structure different uses and programmed activities. Using circulation patterns and building volumes, a grid of white lines was established, defining and organizing play and other leisure spaces. The white lines become the site’s mains structure. The oblique outlines of this “white frame” are determined by the architectural elements of the school’s heritage building, such as the entrances or general built volume. Within the white grid, bright blue areas provide various programs. This net of white lines and blue surfaces becomes the texture of play for the entire project. Furthermore, the blue asphalt surface comes alive by the introduction of vegetation (native trees, shrubs, perennial groundcovers, etc.) and the addition of an odd-shaped sculptural earthwork covered with diversely coloured recycled rubber surfaces. This project was built within a neighborhood-scale pilot project to reduce the heat island effects in the downtown area.

'Pulic School, Municipal Library and Reading Park in Torre Pacheco' by Spanish architect Martin Lejarraga has received the first prize in the built category at the 2010 Urban Intervention Award Berlin. By creating a new topography from the architecture itself and incorporating an open air park within the built program, the complex is an integrative urban space with social, cultural and design elements. The U-shaped library carves out a central public access which features a skate park, green space and bike park. The outward facing perimeter of the library seemingly pulls up the surrounding landscape to create a new terrain which accommodates new public zones including a gallery, flora gardens, numerous sporting facilities and a school. Housed in a building shape similar to that of the library, the school lines the west end of the site and bends around to meet the raised topography. The courtyard features a covered hall with 330 seats and is capable of hosting performances and lectures. To continue the facade language between the school and the library, both buildings share a paneled look with colour-blocking.

ST-PAUL-DE-LA-CROIX SCHOOL

Montreal, Canada

The landscape project was for the complete renovation and revitalization of major exterior spaces for the St-Paul-de-la-Croix primary school, in the northern neighborhood of Montreal called Ahuntsic. By using the existing topography as a dynamic activity anchor, destination and viewing point, NIPpaysage created diverse opportunities for school activities, including relaxation, informal and structured play. To emphasize the importance of sports and student movement through the site, the schoolyard landscape is circumscribed by a zigzagging contemporary running track that follows and unifies the two main levels of the schoolyard space. Colorful pictograms and thick lines painted on the pavement animate the dark asphalt surfaces and create a dialog with the children running around the space. Slopes are used to a maximum as a design tool, half of which is sculpted into a comfortable berm of synthetic grass and half of which is built into a wooden seating area. Densely framed with native planting zones at both extremities of the site, the relationship to the urban fabric beyond is improved and the impact of street traffic and noise are reduced. The addition of a cool and shaded green classroom area near mature street trees allows students and teachers to also use the site in spring and autumn for academic purposes. The overall project combines students’ ever-present energy with a playful design intent.

Beat.Wave is an entry gate to PULSE Miami with an undulating arch that is about 11 feet high. Cantilevering, split and sliced, this ambivalent structure offers seating areas as a meeting point and a place for contemplation. The architect, designer and artist Jürgen Mayer H. focuses on works at the intersection of architecture, communication and new technology. From urban planning schemes and buildings to installation work and objects with new materials, the relationship between the human body, technology and nature form the background for a new production of space. Inhis art work, Mayer strategically chooses to bypass architecture and to use art as an operative platform. In close interaction with our built environment his work highlights the relationship between the human body and the architectural space.

The question of scale and sustainability does not define the architecture itself rather that stimulates different facets.

Béziers, France

An installation does not necessarily involve building new volumes or making a largescale construction. It can include the notion of modifying a point of view, which has an impact on the way the architects perceive a given area; a simple gesture which does not modify the landscape itself but rather the way the architects see it. This is exactly the approach taken by Impression of Infinity : that of organizing an installation through which dreams and fantasies can emerge. Impression of Infinity approaches the concept of abstraction, purity and the immaterial, transparence and reflection, rigidity and fluidity. The installation takes on the appearance of a cloud of particles, a sort of mist floating just above the floor. It seems to undulate within its space tracing the contours of an artificial cloud. Positioned like morning dew on artificial blades of grass, each drop’s mirrored surface returns a deformed image of its environment. By representing the environment in this way, a 360 degrees mirror which also reflects the images reflected by the other globes, generates infinite reflections in a series of multiple, yet concomitant worlds. At twilight, the mirrors dim and small phosphorescent balls light up in quick succession, getting gradually brighter as the atmosphere becomes progressively darker.

Impression of

FIGMENT Festival, New York

New York, USA

INTENSIFIED REFLECTIONS is a nine-hole miniature golf course constructed and installed as part of the FIGMENT Festival during the summer of 2008. If there is any ‘sport’ that is emblematic of the spirit of democracy it is Miniature Golf. In 1867, when it was considered ‘unacceptable’ for women to swing golf clubs back past their shoulders, the Ladies Putting Club was formed in Scotland. During the period of the Great Depression, when American Society looked toward inexpensive forms of leisure, Miniature Golf took on the status as a form of entertainment for the masses, with the first corporate miniature golf franchise established in 1929. By the early 1930s, over 25,000 miniature golf courses were in existence in the United States. Today miniature golf is conceived of as a form of entertainment for the masses; inclusive of all, regardless of age, gender, or socio-economic status; equally enjoyed by jocks and nerds alike. This project addresses ideas of how mass entertainment can reflect the ideals of inclusivity today. The staging of temporal installations and events on Governors Island -- a former military base that is transitioning into a place for public leisure -- also speculates on productive ways of activating “unprogrammed” public spaces. Responding to the course’s theme, “City of Dreams,” Intensified Reflections posits that a dream is often a reflection of reality, intensified to such an extent that it becomes a distortion of reality.

Temporary garden presented by NIPpaysage, a Montréal landscape architects in collaboration with Hydro-Québec for the Métis International Garden Festival. “le bon arbre au bon endroit” (The right tree at the right place) reminds us that planting the right tree in the right place makes good sense. Above, thousands of birds perched on dozens of cables surround the garden. On the ground, the project has evolved over a three year period: 2008-wire reel garden, 2009-hammock garden and 2010-giant picnic table garden. In the garden “le bon arbre au bon endroit”, NIPpaysage has created an electrifying garden. Thousands of birds congregate on lines help to illustrate the many uses of hydro wires in the landscape. And by planting the right tree in the right place, wires and gardens can happily cohabit the same space. The table is an ideal meeting space, a festive place like no other. To exchange bites or speeches, nothing else matters than the diner evolving around the altar of greed. Here, it is an iconic oversized table, crossing a landscape dominated by a large chandelier, which invites visitors to the feast. Surrounded by wired walls and full of birds, that are fully guests, the installation enhances the earth’s pleasures making them the best paradise of all.

The lighthouse - a point of orientation, to be seen from far, was long time used for shipping throughout day and night. Nowadays the lighthouse is used as a symbol for holidays, for the sea, for adventures and water. Light sails are used as guiding symbols for the state exhibition around the Millstaetter Lake, Austria. The idea to design the seven light sails comes out of that old and very well known lighthouses. For the project, the light sails are used to guide the visitors around the different exhibitions. The objects are abstract sails and are orientated to the lake. The Millstaetter Lake is getting a tribune out of water, because the energy of the lake is trapped, converted and reflected as light. Therefore, the sails are working as a transmitter and receiver at the same time. The illumination of the light sails itself is reacting to the surrounding - the more people approaching the sails the more vibrate light. The illumination is also reacting to the temperature they are constantly changing their colours. The colder the temperature the warmer the colour of light is getting. This project is designed by Söhne & Partner Architekten in association with Karl Sodek.

In this year of jubilee, the gardens of Métis are overflowing. The waters of the Saint Lawrence River flow insuppressibly, whether along the shores of Métis-sur-Mer, where the far bank of the river can hardly be seen, or along the piers of Old Montreal where the port once gave birth to the city - the waters are one and the same. With that in mind, a sea creature (the sea urchin) was the inspiration when the International Gardens Festival decided to celebrate its 10th anniversary further upstream. Curious beast and hybrid, the sea urchin has an extraordinary form that translates into an intricate sculpture within the gardens. Far from its original context, the sea urchins’ explosive silhouettes dominate the public plaza like a group of strangers on the grass. Designed to be built of wood, the Place de la Dauversière’s new colony would freely spread just like they simply landed there and decided to stay for a while. Simple in the layout on the public plaza, the design searches to preserve flexibility and better space efficiency as well as to allow the budget to be adapted according the client’s needs. The project preserves the space’s multi-functionality while also joyfully inhabiting it. The form of the urchin also invokes images of fireworks - in effect, these objects whose arms point in all directions like so many sparks lend themselves quite well to night lighting making the space all the more festive.

Central Pattana (CPN)

The scope of Hilton Pattaya includes the hotel drop off area (ground floor) and the hotel garden (16th floor). Three important elements were noticed when the TROP first visited the site: 1, There is a gigantic skylight in the middle of the roof and this skylight is to bring Sunlight down to the Mall. It can't bear any load on it, so it can't be used as part of the garden. To make it worse, the client didn't have budget to decorate this skylight at all, so it is half glass and half concrete . 2, The left-over areas: because the skylight is right in the middle of the roof, what left for the design team are only small and narrow areas around it for the garden. Within the alreadylimited areas, the design team must locate gym and toilets somewhere as well. 3, The irregular edge of the roof: the mall has an interesting in and out facade. However, the edge made it so hard for TROP to design the clean and simple garden they want. Their first move is to deal with the area around the skylight and used the resort design principle to divide and organize the roof into three main garden parts: Arrival court: once the guests get out of the elevators, this arrival court will be the first thing they see. This area is closed since no one walking around in Bikinis wants to see others here. Sun deck: there is no much space left around the skylight for gym and toilets, so idea of adding another layer of garden on top came out. What the designers got is the reasonable-size deck with a direct access from 18th floor. Ocean pool: because of the irregular edge of the mall and the limited space, so the designers only use one simple curve to define the pool in order to avoid adding another complicate design here. 130 - 131

Freycinet, Australia

The site is located at Coles Bay on the east coast of Tasmania, and overlooks Great Oyster Bay and the Freycinet Peninsula. The architects’ brief was for an intimate luxury resort, of 20 private suites that was intended to be a destination mainly cater to interstate or international guests. It also provides and possibly creates a new high-end tourist market in the state. What was important to the client was that the project had an iconic, highly recognizable form that also related to the natural landscape. Although the resort is located within what is extensively a natural coastal landscape, the project site was scarred from its previous use as a disused caravan park. The project became as much about repairing the site and interpreting its unique qualities as it was about creating a space from which it could be experienced. One of the main challenges of the design was to reconcile the client’s perception of luxury and still capture elements of the unique Tasmanian context. The view is important, however, materials, colours, scale and form also contribute strongly.

The new wellness centre is suited in the densely built-up area of the health resort and hotel complex Olimia. The colossal facility is entirely built below ground; therefore the whole area of the new complex is arranged as an urban park. The luxuriant facility efficiently defines the space, as it is through slopes, stairs and terraces linked to the surrounding area of other hotels and baths. The main elements of the arrangement are the paved entrance squares, the lush pathway that leads across the roof of the underground building, the wooden terraces that sweep gently to the open-air pools and the green areas of the roof complex. The arrangement is simple and functional, as with the unified vegetation and the selection of materials and equipments it incorporates the architectural design. Main goal while designing the building was to diminish as much as possible its presence in the surroundings. Since the demanded program of wellness center is very extensive and in parts it demands overcoming great spans and big heights of inner spaces, putting up classically conceived building on central green plot would fill up last remaining open area in thermal complex and largely degraded its spatial quality. New wellness center is consecutively designed rather like a landscape arrangement than a building. Folded elevations appear like supporting walls dividing different levels of landscape surfaces. Central walking path is now stretched over the roof and enables visitors completely new, different experience of the site. On both ends, where strolling path connects with passing inner roads, it forms two smaller public squares to control the speed of vehicles and ultimately gives advantage to pedestrians over the traffic.

City Lounge is an outdoor (living) space in the center of St. Gallen, Switzerland. It is designed by Carlos Martinez in collaboration with Pipilotti Rist as a result of a design competition to create a public living room. The project features a red carpet that flows all around the buildings. The spaces are good for relaxing, conversing and playing. Visitors can find sofas and dining areas there which are good for family bonding. Parking places are provided to those who will bring along their cars and bikes. There are also fake cars on red ground where both children and adults can climb on. The red surface is covering everything in its path, creating a red landscape in the centre of the city. With its soft, pleasing material haptics, the amorphous silhouettes of the furniture present a deliberate contrast to the hard precision of the built surroundings. The relation between interior and exterior seems to be inverted since the external fronts of the buildings may at the same time be understood as internal façades or wallpapers of the lounge. At this point at the latest, the concept breaks with common notions of public space – which are all too often limited to graspable categories such as ‘street’, ‘square’ and ‘park’ - by blurring them with a homogeneous covering.

Fogo Island lies outside of Newfoundland, Canada and is home to a gentle, independent people who have lived for centuries between wind and waves in pursuit of fish. Fogo Islanders live in the untamed landscape of the North Atlantic. The people are subtle and unpretentious yet have seen their traditional way of life by threatened by forces largely beyond their control. The concept of the long studio responds to the transition of the seasons. The studio is organized in a linear from that consists of three different spaces. An open but covered area representing the spring marks the entrance to the studio and the beginning of the seasonal activity. The central portion is left open and mostly exposed to be fully immersed in all that is offered by the long summer days on Fogo Island. The end and main body of the studio is fully enclosed to provide an area of protection and solitude from the outside environment while still providing a connection to the landscape through a strategically framed view of the dramatic surrounding. The long linear structure of this artist studio maximizes the amount of open wall and floor space. Large windows at either end and a skylight on the roof of the studio allows the maximum amount of natural light to flood the space. The studios are placed on pillars at the end towards the sea, while the entrance area has a small concrete foundation for anchoring the construction to the landscape. With this type of construction, the studios can be placed in almost any place on the island. In addition, this allows the studios to be pre-fabricated in a local workshop during the winter months, and then placed in the landscape in the spring.

The proposal of the building is to generate a construction that will be used for conventions, seminars and banquets supporting up to a thousand people. The program is solved in three levels. The main floor holds the assembly halls and the kitchen, on the second floor are the offices and a restaurant with its private kitchen for daily service. The garage is at the underground level with the store rooms. The organic geometry plan lay out the exterior in three areas, two main areas with porches which will hold outside celebrations and one for the service activities. The exterior is also planned, setting a connection with the nature, designing a particular vegetal environment. The garden works like a green edge with trees, grass, white flowers... The circular fountains add calmness to the whole. The natural light is an important feature of the project. The light shines through the big vertical holes in the edge of the building and covers the central area filtered through big glass lamps of the skylights. At nightfall the lighting becomes subtle and suggestive enhancing the atmosphere. The building is a recreational space where, despite its size, the right combination of its elements makes it kind and evocative. Features that belong to the architecture, like geometry, landscape, light, sound, texture... are mixed to form a suggestive group.

Noble Cube is one of the first projects for TROP. The client asked them to design their sales office first. The site is quite small and the design team had a very limited budget for the Landscape. However, Noble Group is quite an interesting client. They really encourage design and love to try new things as long as it is good and fun. Because of the limited budget, there are not many choices for the materials for the designers. For this reason, they gathered a list of affordable materials and tried to figure out a way to make them more interesting. The concept of this project is inspired by paper collage paintings. Instead of color paper, TROP use different materials with different colors. Concrete, shipped rocks, lawn, some shrubs and other materials are chosen as "Colors". At the first beginning, the designers arranged the materials into a nicer 2D composition, like a painting, and then they started to transform the design into 3D by raising some pieces of materials here and there. Some of those become the main steps into the sales office, while others become garden elements. As the result, they managed to build the garden, with a very little budget, as an interesting piece of green area. Since the location is right at the main traffic junction of the district, local people and the passerby also love the project. Its green landscape helps them reducing stresses from the congested traffic around the area. And for the customers of the project, mostly young professionals, they love the distinguished look of the garden.

The Tecnoparque High Tech Office Campus, located in Azcapotzalco, in the northern area of Mexico City, is a 15.5 hectare complex geared to satisfy new office space requirements in the city. In conjunction with authorities, the objective is to improve the area, creating new jobs in the tertiary sector, integrating energy saving systems, rain water collection and infiltration and recycling of vital resources such as water. The intention is to reactivate a post- industrial area in continuing transformation with existing infrastructure, roads, public transportation (metro); housing and near-by higher education institutions in order to establish a new hightech office complex (call centers, service center and data centers) with international standards. The complex incorporates landscape architecture through contemporary green open spaces, plazas, gardens and water features which help provide areas for workers to relax and communicate in a high quality working environment. The ecological concepts which were adopted incorporate through technology: rain water collection from roofs and plazas, on-site water harvesting cells, re-infiltration of storm water into the aquifer by a system of deep wells and the treatment of gray and toilet waters onsite incorporating the effluent into a series of landscape pools and into the irrigation of planted and forested areas. Tecnoparque represents an interesting participation of private enterprise in conjunction with urban strategies to reactivate Mexico City in its post-industrial role, within an ecological vision and ethic.

BAT TOWER is the first built prototype in the “Pest Architecture” project series, exploring strategies for increasing public awareness of bats as a critical component of our ecosystem. Bats are effective as natural pesticides, pollinators, and mosquito abatement. Yet they are often considered as a kind of urban pest, and are frequently exterminated by human-run 'pest control' services. Their very survival is also being challenged by White Nose Syndrome, a disease which has inexplicably been wiping out large bat populations in northeastern United States. In order to bring visibility to bats, BAT TOWER challenges notions of the typical off-the-shelf bat house. Rather than innocuously fading into the background, the tower stands as a prominently visible outdoor sculpture. Drawing from the idea of a vertical cave, the installation has a heavy and intense presence, contrasting the lightness and invisibility associated with do-it-yourself bat house constructions. BAT TOWER is sited and designed to attract and facilitate bat inhabitation. Located adjacent to a pond, the site boasts an abundance of mosquitoes and other bat-attracting insects. Chives, oregano and other bat-attracting herbs are planted within the base of the tower. To help facilitate entry, the project's ribbed construction includes a series of 'landing pads' near the top of the tower. A pattern of grooves on both vertical and horizontal surfaces allows bats to more easily climb into the tower and cling to its 'ceilings.' To provide a suitably warm interior for bat roosting, dark wood panels cover the tower's inhabitation zone in order to absorb sunlight.

Dunepark consists of three appealing play objects: the skate-stage, dune-towers and concrete pedestal.

Velsen, the Netherlands

Dunepark is part of a foothill of the Northsea dunes, running deep into a 1960’s social-housing area. Recently parts of the park had been redeveloped as building sites for urban-villas. Due to damage done to the natural landscape by this development, and a long lasting lack of maintenance, the park needed complete renovation. The landscaping was done by the city of Velsen. Carve was asked to create three appealing play objects, attracting a wide age range and offering a sculptural contribution to the park. Our proposal consisted of three interventions. By adding steel benches to an intimate area surrounded with old typical dune vegetation we introduced the skate-stage. Meant as a meeting-place for the neighborhood’s youth, the oval and raised stage (with edges and banks) can also function as a small skate park. It also gives place to open air performances as asked for by the primary schools close to the site. Three big twisted towers, Dune-towers, are mutually connected with bridges, and cladded with diagonal beams of inland oak. As they are lowered into the surface, their immense size is easily overlooked. The banked sides provide an intimate place to sit and watch. Almost twenty aluminum masts are placed on an inclined concrete pedestal, twelve meters in diameter. Engraved with a circular equivalent of sand ripples as found on the beach and formed by the wind, the pedestals guide the water back to the recollection basin. Altogether the masts and pedestal provide for water play with surprising effects.

A Place to Watch Over the City

Fukuoka, Japan

EARTHSCAPE has planned this project for a long time in a central location, in front of Fukuoka Castle. Although the location is in the middle of a particularly diverse environment, it belongs to no other entity; it is neutral, with the personality of a mid-region. An ambient environment that enjoys its proximity to the healthy green environment of Ohori Park, one of the city's largest parks, it also serves as the junction between the city center and the new urban area. EARTHSCAPE felt that one of the most prominent features of this location was how it maintained a relationship with its surroundings where it provides surveillance of the city, and how it watches over the city. In this project, the design team combined landscape design with architecture, landscape and art to invoke both the city of Fukuoka, and Fukuoka Bank, which has contributed so much to the development of the city. The basis of the landscape, which draws from the word "weave," is a floor embellished like a weave with fine designs inspired by hakataori, a traditional textile of Fukuoka City. The designers created five axis lines using the geography and environment of Fukuoka, the five presentation colors of hakataori, as well as the management principles of Fukuoka Bank, and wove them together as special threads into the piece of cloth (the landscape), in order to construct the identity of this location. This landscape is a space of rich greenery designed to beckon the neighboring Ohori Park into the city, through the entrance plaza that, through various programs, serves as a point of communication with the region. At the same time, it has become an index for Fukuoka, stored with information to help visitors learn a little more about Fukuoka. 190 - 191

Montreal City

Interactive urban adventure through improvised play

Montreal, Canada

The design of a new play area in one of Montreal’s larger public parks was an interesting experience. In the case of Jarry Park, many people coming from the diverse surrounding communities and neighborhoods use the green space for a wide range of recreation activities throughout the year. To design the playground, a contemporary and experiential approach was used to create a modern urban adventure path, preserving existing trees and keeping all excavated materials on site to create topography. An interactive timber footpath, inspired by the space’s topography, vegetation and materials, meanders through a grove of maple trees, allowing seating for parents, lounging for teenagers and a diversity of improvised play opportunities for younger adventurers. This project also proposes an ecological approach to surface runoff and water management through the ornamental grasses, native shrubs and hardy perennials. To add colour and interest, bird houses were carefully placed close to the play area for the enjoyment of parents and children alike. The birdhouses emphasize the richness of the local bird community and overall biodiversity within this large park.

The Palacegarden in The Hague is a historical royal garden, situated behind the royal stables of “Paleis Noordeinde”.The garden with its wide lawns, water features and majestic old trees was once owned by the royal Dutch family. Today it functions as a public park, in the green lacking city centre of The Hague. Carve was asked by the city council to design a playground especially for the youngest of age (children between 1-6 years old). A sculptural character and the preservation of the authenticity of the garden were specific requirements for this design to meet. The design involves a simple play structure of several white spheres, which are connected by curved tubes. Swinging, sliding, rocking. Together with the sloping safety surface the pearls form an adventurous play area, providing various play functions and an atmosphere where children might find their imagination stimulated. Meant as an appeal to the sense of touch, the different materials give a different tactile sensation. The stainless steel tubes change temperature easily and have a hard, shiny polished surface, while the rubber coating of the pearls feels warm and has a softer surface. Placed in a corner of the park, the structure keeps clear of the broad lawns of the old garden.
