Landscape design plays a unique and important role in enviromental planning and public visual interaction. The project resolves complex geotechnical, structural and heritage conditions. As a direct result, the materials of the boardwalk change from timber to a gridded fiberglass, allowing light and water through to remnant vegetation. Five Lookout points with bespoke furniture create opportunities to pause, rest and enjoy the spectacular views along the sandstone coast. The walk is strategic about the balance of ‘risk’ to ‘experience’ and as such the balustrades are limited to areas which most require safety. The project has a clear design language, using simple materials. It shifts and slides along the movement path to reveal the story of the cliff top landscape. The lightness and calibration of the structure which moves from ground to an elevation of 7m in height reinforces this experience of being on the edge. All materials selected are robust, long lasting and are selected to minimise ongoing maintenance by the Council. A combination of materials was used for the decking to achieve aesthetic, ecological and durability goals. Fibreglass mesh was used over areas of important remnant vegetation to allow some light penetration, rain permeability and for its construction ease and durability, it was decided that due to the extreme coastal exposure that fibreglass would be the only material to withstand corrosion and meet the design quality and aesthetic objectives.

Despite its importance and history, for many decades Detroit’s waterfront was a neglected remnant of the city’s industrial past. Sasaki was brought in to collaborate with Albert Kahn Associate, based in Detroit, to reimagine a thin strip – 914.4 metres long but less than 30.48 metres wide – along the Detroit River adjacent to the Detroit Civic Center. In addition to the site’s compact size, there were challenges presented by the presence of the overhead light-rail system that bisects the site as it snakes through downtown Detroit. The design strategy yielded an elegant solution that playfully engages with this massive piece of infrastructure while referencing the site’s maritime history. A stepped concrete helix resembles a coil of rope unwinding and morphing into a serpentine seta wall. Despite its jaunty presence, this nautical allusion has a practical side – as the seat wall meanders down the site, it weaves among the 7.62 metres columns supporting the people mover above, creating a usable civic environment out of what would otherwise be dark and forbidding leftover space. As an iconic image for the site, the helix is envisioned as a pedestal for future major sculptural installation. Lightand dark-grey striped paving forms a dramatic backdrop. Landscaped berms and groves of river-birch trees recall the sylvan riverfront first encountered by the French explorers more than three centuries ago. All up and down the site, a variety of commuter, tourist and personal watercraft dock along the waterfront as visitors and locals enjoy a reclaimed part of Detroit’s natural and historic legacy.

The Indianapolis Waterfront is an epic story of urban regeneration. Four decades ago, it was a decrepit riverfront and an abandoned industrial canal – residents of Indiana’s capital scarcely thought of themselves as living in a riverfront city. Today it is a vibrant mix of commercial, cultural and institutional destinations. The Capital City Landing is the principal park link between the downtown civic/commercial core and the river. The principal organizing element of the landing is the extension of the historic Central Canal. An abandoned sluice was incorporated into the waterfall feature whose walls are made of Indiana limestone. The landing site was layered with other remnants of roads, bridges, industrial and commercial buildings, utility corridors and canals, evidence of 175 years of growth and change within the city. The park design radically rethinks the topography of the site and reinterprets the found-site conditions using contemporary design forms. The planning strategy was analogous to the practice of navigation. Historic routes – waterways, roads and river bridging points were plotted on the site. These navigation lines became the organizing structure of the new park. The park was made using the operations of cutting and layering – a principal goal was the preservation of river views from as many points in the city as possible. The land was cut into a series of terraces of varied widths that step down to the river from the city, revealing the riparian landscape from the moment one enters the park. Limestone cladding, metal trelliswork and pergolas, and vine plantings create a textured, living edge to the spaces of the park.

‘Water in Historic City Centres’ is a European collaborative project between the cities of Breda,’s-Hertogenbosch, Gent, Mechelen, Chester and Limerick. The first project for the ‘Water in Historic City Centres’ project has been completed in Mechelen, Belgium. Water and Mechelen are inextricably bound up together. The water network of the Dijle river and its tributaries covers the entire city. The restoration of the Melaan stream is a substantial element of the task of bringing water back to this historic quarter. After all the work has been completed, in 2006, the Melaan stream once more flows through Mechelen in all its glory. In fact, the development of the Melaan does not only mean the opening up of a stream in the centre of the city, but also the creation of a new location with meaning. It becomes a new quayside in the heart of the city: a quay on which people can work, where small boats have their moorings, where people can take a stroll. It is also a quay that offers opportunities for long-term transformation, both in the buildings and in the public space.

This is a built-up area consisting of the Echegaray and Caballero promenade and a park running lengthwise between this avenue and the river Ebro. The possibility of creating a walkway along the right bank of the Ebro through a garden area, taking into account the future Ebro dam pedestrian link, makes this project an outstanding route for pedestrians through the city. A municipal sports centre near the mouth of the river Huerva, nestling between the river itself and the bridge, benefits and encourages the park´s future activities, more closely associated with open-air sports. The high-density population in the Fuentes district means there is sufficient traffic and that the new routes should be used, which will encourage and promote the park´s proposed activities. The project enhances the view from this area towards the Basilica, creating a link between the project area and the city centre. The mouth of the river Huerva would be enhanced by a new pedestrian walkway across its 60m span, whilst maximising communications between the riverbank roads of the Ebro and the Huerva, reinstating the river Huerva as a city thoroughfare and gateway to the Ebro.

The northern quays have been given a green and softer atmosphere, which reinforces the long line of those quays.

Rotterdam’s city centre impresses with its dynamism. Rotterdam reflects, to a greater extent than other Dutch cities, a process of perpetual dynamism and change. The heart of Rotterdam needs to become an attractive place to dwell, work and spend time. The core of the task is to create an attractive public space. A vital city offers space to urban life, i.e., the phenomenon that is to a large extent generated by pedestrians, cyclists and people generally going about their business on the streets. The old, long lines of the city form valuable connections between cores and poles in the city centre. The project also includes an image upgrade for the public space. The basis for the transformation of this space is to be found in the underlying landscape, consisting of the Maas, the dikes and the old reclamations and routes. Rotterdam’s public space increases in quality through the addition of green places and a greater diversity amongst these, as well as by implementing sustainable solutions for rainwater catchments and the underground infrastructure. An external space in the centre, with improved visual and functional quality, embodying spots of tranquillity and vegetation, with an international allure, will make the city centre even more desirable than it is now as a place for dwelling, working and going out.

Located at the foot of Lower Jarvis Street adjacent to the Redpath Sugar Factory, the 8500 square metre park is the first public space visitors see as they travel along Queens Quay from the central waterfront. The park’s brightly coloured pink beach umbrellas and iconic candystriped bedrock welcome visitors to the new waterfront neighbourhood of East Bayfront. The design for Sugar Beach draws upon the industrial heritage of the area and its relationship to the neighbouring Redpath Sugar factory. The park features three distinct components - an urban beach, a plaza space, and a treelined promenade running diagonally through the park. The Sugar factory creates a surreal industrial backdrop, where gantry cranes offload mountains of sandy raw sugar from giant tankers moored in the slip. With the fragrance of sugar in the air, the park’s conceptual reference is experienced in both sight and smell. Sugar as concept was used to establish a language for many of the elements throughout the park, from the red and white bedrock candy stripes on the park’s two outcroppings, the soft confection-like pink of the umbrellas, and even the candy cane pattern on the stainless steel ventilation pipes to the fountain mechanical vault concealed under the promenade. Sugar Beach reminds us that Toronto’s waterfront is a playful destination. The beach allows visitors to while away the afternoon as they read, play in the sand or watch boats on the lake. The park’s plaza offers a dynamic space for public events. One of the park’s granite rock outcropping and three grass mounds give the public an amphitheatre for outdoor concerts on the stage of the adjacent entertainment studio.

The design brief from Grosvenor called for the creation of a major new public park to form the centrepiece of the Liverpool One development, replacing the largely underused left over 20,000sq m public green space known as Chavasse Park. The design philosophy determined that the new park created a green oasis in contrast to the surrounding hardscape of the City Centre, with the ability to accommodate a range of changing outdoor seasonal events. In addition, the Park had to be accessible on a 24 hour basis for the enjoyment and recreation of all. In response to these requirements the main amenities of the Park comprise a ‘Grand Lawn’, richly planted terraced and walled gardens, sites for beautiful pavilion buildings, sheltered seating, semi-mature coniferous and deciduous ornamental trees planting and multifunctional paving areas. To celebrate the historical maritime importance of this part of Liverpool a large water feature commemorating the ‘Old Dock’ has been incorporated into the Park consisting of a series of interlinked pools and fountains. Innovative lighting across the entire Park highlight footways and special features. A complex sculptural series of granite stairways and ‘bleachers’ link the upper levels of the Park to adjacent pedestrian squares and streets. The completed Park has already become a recognised destination for locals and visitors to the City alike. The strength of the defined space, World Heritage setting, active frontages and variety within the landscape treatment combine to create a unique public space in the heart of the City.

This site is near the vast woodland area. The landscape plan and all things on the landscape had a forest/nature motif design. Many people who come from not only distant place, but also neighboring place visit that outlet mall in weekends. The various activity invented by the design provide their great holidays. The karakusa (arabesque) is an ancient worldwide pattern of Nature motif, and which symbolize with feelings of awe and love of nature. This outlet park's design theme is the Forest and Nature, too. Architects designed the original arabesque "Iruma Karakusa", and to use that pattern everywhere in the outlet at the entrance wall, floor patterns, layout of pavement and graphic designs. The "Iruma Karakusa" is an important key design of the Outlet Park Iruma. The facility has the four parts: South, North, East, West, and each entrance have the Iruma Karakusa Graphic Wall, whose colour and pattern-design inspired four seasons. The two entrances along the National Route 16 are the main entrance of the facility. Architects set up objects formed like a flower or leaves at the main entrance area. The each four parts in the outlet mall has open space. Those open spaces are located at the four corners of the site.

Namba Parks, a vibrant lifestyle center, inserts a much-needed natural amenity into Osaka’s dense city core. Namba Parks generously weaves rich landscaping and other natural elements with specialty retail, entertainment and dining, creating a new unique place that celebrates the interaction of people, culture and recreation. Located adjacent to Namba Train Station, Namba Parks is a key gateway project for Osaka that redefines the city’s identity and urban experience. In Namba Parks, Jerde conceived of nature as a form of urban intervention and designed Namba Parks as a natural amenity that offers relief from the hard, bustling city, and creates a new experience for Osaka. The project’s interior is a man-made canyon. Originally conceived by the client as a simple concrete passageway to connect the north and south parcels of the project site, Jerde proposed a canyon instead. Namba Parks forms a dramatic new identity for the city. The sloping nature of the park serves as a green and highly visible oasis in a city. By connecting to the street, the sloping park plane draws people up and into the project among groves of trees, green spaces, water features and outdoor terraces, where they can dine, read, socialize, or simply taking in views of the city.

The Deichmann square and the Negev Gallery constitute a link between Ben-Gurion University campus and the city of Be'er Sheva. The square serves as an entrance gate to the western side of the campus, surrounded by existing buildings and the future Negev Gallery. At the same time, it also offers an outdoor space for cultural and social activities for students and for the city population. The square is bordered by the elongated structure of the gallery facing both the city and the campus. Towards the city, the gallery's continuous façade (160 metre in length) unifies the heterogeneous appearance of the existing buildings behind the gallery into a cohesive urban unit. The façade is accompanied by a sculpture garden creating a green edge to the campus. The two story high monolithic body of exposed concrete emerges from lawny topography of the northern part of the campus and hovers above an entrance courtyard in the southern part, where it appears to be leaping towards the urban space. The gallery hosts exhibition spaces, museology faculty, workshops and auditorium contributing to the outdoor activities on Deichmann Square. Since the square was designated to accommodate intensive congregation of youth and students, the preferred solution was to allocate limited areas for vegetation. The design of the square with various elements of exposed concrete connects the surrounding buildings both physically and visually, accentuating their common features. The square appears as a carpet of integrated strips of concrete paving, vegetation and lighting with concrete benches and trees scattered randomly. The strips of vegetation consist of lawn, Equisetopsida and seasonal plants. 066 - 067

Developed as a key element of the “Vision for the Second Century” strategic plan, the Brochstein Pavilion has transformed the Central Quadrangle into the social center of the Rice University campus. The 557m2 pavilion offers light refreshments and features a 929 m2 covered outdoor terrace. Set in a field of decomposed granite, a grove of 48 Allee Lacebark Elms respond to the grid of the building and organize the space between the Pavilion and the adjacent Fondren Library. A generous concrete walk connecting the library and the pavilion bisects the grove into garden rooms whose perimeters are defined by plantings of African Iris. Long black concrete fountains filled with beach stone occupy the center of each space, filling the garden with the murmur of running water and reflecting the filtered light through the canopy. The Brochstein Pavilion is capped by a steel and aluminum trellis structure which protects the building and extends in all directions to cover and shade the surrounding seating terrace. The trellis, consisting of an aluminum tubes, protects the building from the harsh Texas sun. Hovering over and shading the entire structure, the trellis cuts the direct sun by an average of 70%. This extensive shade protection reduces the required mechanical cooling load by 30% and allows the structure to be open and naturally ventilated throughout much of the year.

Drawing inspiration from a typical New England landscape, the courtyard places one into a series of carefully designed spaces that share many overlapping characteristics of an aesthetically enriching and learning environment. Its geologyinfluenced framework sits within the successional plant ecologies, creating an outdoor classroom used year round by both students and faculty alike. Geology is the unifying component. A crosscourtyard paving pattern represents geologic strata and processes. Inside the courtyard, the paving turns on a diagonal “fault line” with bands of stone representing geological layering, folding, faulting, erosion and volcanism. Boulders from the surrounding region define character and scale. A collection of smaller boulders is used for seating. Smaller ones are moved around the courtyard by faculty as part of their coursework. Plants from several communities demonstrate seasonal change, plant growth, and maturity. The courtyard is linked to the school’s curriculum as an model outdoor field laboratory while providing students with opportunities to gather casually and relax. The Keene State College Science courtyard demonstrates the successful contribution landscape architecture can make— in teaching and learning, promoting social connectedness, supporting community,and providing natural habitats.

The architect’s intent for the building was to encourage an appreciation of the museum's extraordinary natural surroundings. The design team made this their unified goal. They discussed several concepts that defined a trajectory for the project. First, the landscape would need a bold physical presence in order to provoke interest and curiosity from the wide avenues, parking lots and open sky that surround it. Secondly, the landscape should avoid prescribing any particular activities on the site. In addition to it being a setting for the museum, which creates some unique programming opportunities and specific spatial demands, the park is also one of the city’s few public civic spaces. Finally, the park should express a “civilized wild” by using a balance of native plants and culturally significant horticulture. The design concept for the Museum’s civic space emerged from the expansive mudflats and deciduous birch forests that surround Anchorage. Paper birch is one of the most culturally and ecologically important and widespread native trees in the Anchorage Bowl. The paper birch forest fills the park, giving it a dynamic, living element. A low, simple understory planting accentuates the open space between the ground and the tree canopy. Rooms carved into the forest are surfaced with turf and hardscape, creating areas for gathering, sculpture, and group activity. The largest of these is the Green, which generously spills out from the new museum’s primary entrance into the heart of the site. The Green is the central open space flanked by the museum main entry and birches on three sides. Like the other three smaller rooms, it is a rectangular lawn panel cut into the forest and functions like rooms in a building – flexible and programmable.

Since 2005, the oldest city in Portugal, Ponte de Lima, host every year during 6 month, an international garden festival, made of ephemeral works made by architects, landscaper and artists. For the 6th edition with the theme “Kaos in the Garden”, Oglo associated with PPil were selected by the jury. The project Dark Rift – a track between natural and artificial have been selected among 77 proposals submitted from 15 country. The balance between what Nature and Artificial have created or shaped, may irreversibly be broken. Cyclones, earthquakes, seism, and burn down can suddenly crush, collapse, break or burn off their work. Linear, homogenous and fruitless chaos both tears apart and moves closer nature and craft. Oglo+Ppil's garden aims to show the superiority of the chaos in front of natural and artificial. The chaos is designed around a central track whose infinity is given back by the mirror reflecting reflection. However, as a fault, as a gap, this devastated spit of land is the disconcerting place from where one can’t make distinction between the pastiche and the genuine. On the left hand side of this chaos state depicting, will be arranged perennials herbs which adapt to poor soil and hostile environment conditions. These plantations take place on a slightly contour bowed ground. The lines are voluntary curved in contrast with the straight part of the garden. On the right side of the chaos track there is an artificial garden which symbolizes a human struggle against chaos. This part of the garden is same wise structured, it seems to be the natural part of the garden distorted reflection.

“Evolver” is an inhabitable sculpture erected for the Zermatt Festival, the renowned annual event for Chamber Music featuring musicians of the Berlin Philharmonics and many others. “Evolver” was designed by 12 second-year architecture students at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. The team of students produced all necessary construction documents, fabricated every single part themselves and finally erected the project at Stelli in a fourweek construction phase. In an effort to take full advantage of the site’s extensive and astounding views, the project sits strategically next to the lake Stelli at an altitude of 2536 m. The project is entirely built up of wood, and has been conceived to leave no waste material when recycled. Its construction was made possible by using uptodate computer software and by crossing this approach with low-tech construction methods. Its structure consists of a succession of 24 rotating frames supporting an enclosed space that visitors are encouraged to enter. As he or she progresses through the space, a concealed but uninterrupted 720 movement is unraveling along a transformed panorama: a selective string of openings only to be caught peeling off a sequence of unexpected views from the original landscape. Wobbling below and above a distant horizon, ground and sky have been reorchestrated into an orbiting panorama.

The architects’ wish for nature is that it be imitated, depicted, protected, but also that it recover its role as a departure point for new, eclectic, innovative relationships between human beings and their environment. The project is the outcome of a conceptual notion that envisages architecture as “hyper-nature.” The exterior structure reflects surrounding nature, while the interiors are covered with climbing plants. In this way the space is enclosed but its boundaries are undefined, its geometries distorted, and sun and water can enter here. Within, the floor appears as a meadow, reflecting on the walls and ceiling. Outside, the walls become extensions of the sky. Thus the artificial space is inverted: while nature invades the inner space of the psyche, which is personal and private, the conceptual and mimetic external space loses its architectural solidity and fades away into light and immaterial landscape. In some measure the project upends the traditional antagonism between the natural and the artificial, between nature and architecture. The “interior vegetation” grows and overruns the walls, while the architecture is subject to cyclical changes, as the days and seasons pass, retrieving an ancient approach for capturing living space.

建筑师对于自然的期望在于:自然是被模仿、 被描述、受到保护的,同时也恢复其角色,向 人类与环境之间崭新、折中、创新的关系出 发。 本案是概念上的结果,将建筑设想为“超自 然”状态。外部构造反应周围的自然,室内空 间被攀缘植物所覆盖。通过这种方式,该空间 是封闭的,但其界限确是不明确的。本案几何 形体歪曲,阳光、雨水可以进入。室内,地面 看上去犹如草地一般,反射在墙上和天花板 上。室外,墙体成为天空的延展。 因此,人造空间被颠倒:自然向内部空间渗 透,室内空间犹如个人及私密的心灵空间;概 念上的模拟室外空间摒弃建筑的坚固特性,消 失在光线及无形的景观之中。在一定程度上, 本案颠倒了天然与人工之间、自然与建筑之间 的传统意义上的对立。“室内植物”在墙上生 长及蔓延,随着季节及时间的流逝,建筑易受 周期变化的影响,重获捕捉生活空间的古代方 式。

The river aquarium Expo Zaragoza 2008 contains a permanent exhibition of the rivers of the world called ‘Water Landscapes’. The permanent exhibition aims to show that Creation was not a concrete act, but a long process over time in which species adapt to their environment and the environmental conditions that support them. In addition people can, with patience and the right attitude, observe this process each day, even influencing it through their own actions. The backbone of the exhibition is a huge tank of fresh water 40 metres long and 9 metres deep which simulates the original river, the ‘Great River of the World’. Fresh water fish from the five continents live together in this tank, adding weight to the idea that everything comes from common stock. To this great river, they have attached volumes that simulate the different continents or bio geographic river regions, each one represented by its most characteristic river (The Nile in Africa, The Mekong in the Indomalaya, The Amazon in the neotropical, the Murray-darling in Australasia and The Ebro in the Arctic). Each river shows the diversity of animals linked to subaquatic areas or the riverbanks (fish, amphibians, reptiles and the odd mammal) by realistically reproducing scenes from the source to the mouth of each river.

Amanali is a residential development with nearly 2,700 homes, an 18-hole golf “championship” course and aquatic sports. It is located by Lake Requena, in the State of Hidalgo, Mexico in a 300 Ha site with a 6 km waterfront. It is a privileged zone that presents multiple natural qualities like a benign weather, diverse natural vegetation and extraordinary views to the lake and its gullies. GDU office was in charge of the Urban Design for the master plan, all the Landscape Architecture and the Architectural Design for the access elements.The aim was to fully integrate the formal design of the plazas, tower-symbol and showroom with the setting of the natural semi-desert landscape, which is characteristic in the central part of the country. The main expressive element is the use of volcanic rock, which was directly extracted from the site as a product of the excavations during the construction of the road system. Similarly, the plant palette for the landscape design is based on desert plants like Sotol (Dasylirion wheeleri), Maguey (Agave salmiana), and columnar cacti (Cereus sp.), which were rescued and recovered directly from the site and then re-planted. The architectural language of the building contrasts with the retaining stonewalls, through its light roof structure and thin columns, and the surrounding transparent elements of the glass perimeter. In the garden of the principal office and sales building the loose gravel of tezontle, a volcanic red rock of pre-Hispanic tradition, also contrasts with the rectangular wood decks, while the massive stonewalls frame the spectacular views towards the lakes and surrounding mountainous landscape.Our clients asked for a clean architecture with a very local mood, mixed with a contemporary expression that would set the atmosphere for the future construction of houses in the residential development. 108 - 109

Designing golf courses is a challenge, both in formal as in conceptual sense. Especially, because we look at it from two angles, as landscape architects on one hand, and as golfers on the other hand. A golf course is a physical system, where a number of parameters are related to a complex whole. We believe that it is possible to create different, copyright courses, which are nonetheless playable, attractive and last, but not least well attended. We believe that the courses all over the world are too similar; therefore we offer two alternative golf course designs. A more reserved one, where the golf course is more consistent with the space and takes into account local characteristics and landscape patterns, and a more daring one, where the courses are conceptually based theme parks. Back to nature are examples of golf courses, where the characteristic local natural or cultural landscape is an equivalent integral part of the course design. The courses therefore are less artificial, are more natural and more embedded in the local landscape area. Typical local natural or cultural landscape is thus an integral part of the course itself, as it helps shape fairways, greens, direction of play, and of course hazards. In this case the emphasis lies in the conceptual design approach, where the creation of space plays a more important role. The course is formed on the basis of conceptual design instead of characteristics of local landscapes. The course therefore is not an artificial Arcadia, trying hard to be nature itself, as it happens with most modern courses; the course is intensely formed in a way to look and work like a designed park.

Shortly after British hotelier, Sir Rocco Forte decided to build an exclusive golf resort in Sicily on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, he appointed leading golf architect, Kyle Phillips, to masterplan what is now considered by many to be Europe’s finest golf resort. The magnificent property at Verdura encompasses over 2300000 m2 and includes: two kilometers of private beach frontage, two 18hole championship golf courses, a 9-hole short course and a world-class practice facility all designed by Phillips. The courses weave their way through the beautiful Sicilian landscape of olive and orange groves, with 5 holes playing along the shoreline and every hole enjoying views of the azure Mediterranean Sea. For special golf events, Phillips has also designed an 18 Hole “Composite” routing that incorporates all of the seaside holes. The hotel has just 203 rooms and suites, giving it a true sense of exclusivity. Italian architect, Flavio Albanese fused strong, modernist, environmentally sensitive architecture with design that is simultaneously luxurious, firmly rooted in Sicilian culture and inspired by the spectacular Mediterranean setting. Every room and suite enjoys a private terrace with uninterrupted views of sea, and surrounding mountains. Phillips’ masterplan at Verdura is notable for its achievements in environmental sustainability. The site has been painstakingly recreated, not only with fruit trees, but with over 350000 m2 devoted to wetlands, naturalized and native non-irrigated plant materials. This creation of biodiversity provides large areas ideal for wildlife habitat.

Situated along 3.5 kilometres of sandy Arabian Sea, this stunning new Kyle Phillips design is the first true links course in the Middle East. Based on his acclaimed “Links” designs at both Kingsbarns and Dundonald in Scotland, Phillips transforms the featureless site and undefined shoreline into what is now a truly magnificent links golf experience. Phillips has managed to design 18 distinctive holes across a canvas of dramatic landforms that appear to be lifted directly from the dunes of Scotland. The result is stunning. With views of the majestic Arabian Sea from every hole, 8 holes hug the shoreline. Like all great links courses, Yas Links is built from sand, which allows for fast and firm playing conditions year round. Paspalum turf, conducive to the warm Abu Dhabi climate, provides a playing equivalent to the fescues and bent grasses found along the Scottish coast where Links golf originated. The Golf Environmental Organization says the following regarding Yas Links: “A sustainable approach to the creation of new golfing landscapes. Once a flat stretch of sandy barren desert, with no vegetation or wildlife, the project was conceived from the outset to utilise reclaimed water for irrigation, resulting in the decision to limit the maintained turf area and to use Paspalum as the principal turfgrass species. There is minimal use of pesticides, and a long-term aim to enable a wholly-organic management regime. An existing mangrove and natural tidal area has been preserved adjacent to the site, and a bird sanctuary was introduced and expanded.”

The new John E. Jaqua Academic Center at the University of Oregon is a pure manifestation of minimalist architecture and landscape architecture, but with a twist. Here, urban ecology is the functional grounds for the living landscape. In this way the yin yang relationship between site and building is clear and determined. You have the very static glass façade that reflects all the seasonal changes and atmosphere of its context while the landscape of mostly native plants, arranged in very orderly patterns, contains all the elements and diversity of a robust “natural” landscape. The setting and the building are complementary. With walls of glass, the interior rooms borrow scenery directly from landscape while the landscape uses the glass façade as a reflective backdrop. The strong geometric planes of walkways, plaza’s and reflecting pool stretch beyond themselves, to integrate interior, exterior, and natural spaces into a seamless whole. The raised granite terrace and black table of water evocatively capture the classic modernist conceit by breaking down the membrane between indoors and out, yet the Tables of Water go beyond to mediate between the land, the birches and the sky to harmonize and funnel each into the building’s interior. A black reflective plane of water surrounds the building on four sides and is edged by an elegant linear grove of white birch trees and native shrubs. The birches and associated plant community are the biofiltration system for the project. A gracious stone entry plaza flanking the south side of the building provides a sunny place for students to congregate and also establishes the strong plinth for the building.

The New York Times Building Lobby Garden led by HM White Site Architects in coordination with Cornelia Oberlander Architects, is considered the heart and soul of the headquarters building. Resting on Manhattan Schist bedrock as the building’s only unexcavated area, the courtyard is experienced by 360-degrees of uninterrupted views from a variety of surrounding public spaces and office spaces above. As a counterpoint to its dense, bustling Times Square neighborhood, the open-air garden’s central building location celebrates a serene fragment of the Hudson River Valley woodland landscape at the heart of this man-made construct. Transected by a singular path highlighting the sculpted topography, an emerald evergreen carpet of sedges and ferns stages the golden autumn display of the Birch trees and a constellation of flowering bulbs in early spring. A layered web of infrastructure knits the garden with the building and the ground while also supporting the development of healthy endemic soil biology to ensure long term sustainability in this manufactured site. Wrapped in a transparent glass veil, the 15m tall Birch trees and the undulating carpet of sedges and ferns register a contrasting sculptural relief to the level plane of the floating garden path and the lobby’s White Oak floor. No matter where one turns, the garden’s woodland sensibilities possess an omni present, drawing attention and sensual connection to changing light and seasonal qualitative.

The land reclamation of ‘s-Graveland (dating from the 17th century) sets an unique example of landscape architecture, where an abundance of parks, gardens and estates have appeared, based on a rational polder system. This rugged landscape has a great spatial diversity with high ecological qualities. At the same time, it is a typical example of style periods within the profession of landscape architecture. Over the past 350 years, there has been room for change and development within this landscape. This very landscape is the setting for the Berestein Cemetery. The commission was to design an expansion to the old cemetery and the creation of a new auditorium. The design for the expansion is based on the structural principles of the surrounding landscape, such as the alternation between open and closed spaces and the subtle use of formal lines. The old cemetery, the auditorium and the expansion zone are connected together by the extension of the main axis of the old cemetery. The old section is an open area within woodland, while the new element is a planted island in the open space. The old and new are therefore each other’s opposites, separated by a strip of transparent woodland in which the auditorium and the urn pillars stand. The design of the new area consists out of an oval form, elevated 1.50 metres from the surrounding meadow. Around the burial field a beech hedge is planted which will have a height of 1.50 metres. This grave field is planted with cherry trees and 6 metres high linden trees. Both tree species are arranged loosely in the field. The grass on the cemetery grounds is kept low, while a rough field of grasses surrounds the cemetery.

Since 1751, the Boekenbergpark designed by J.P. Van Baurscheit is changed continuously. In 1934, the serpentine pond was re-established as an open air swimming pool. Because of the strict environmental and safety standards, the municipality of Antwerp decided in 2005 to transform the ageing and leaking open air swimming pool into an ecological swimming pond. The concept of OMGEVING is to soften the original fixed concrete structure, the screaming blue of the swimming pool walls etc. The ageing buildings and unnecessary barriers were removed, and the necessary facilities were carefully planned and positioned. Three striking new park pavilions form the final touch in the conversion of the open air swimming pool into an ecological swimming pond. The original swimming section was retained because of the required depth of the swimming pond, while the other parts of the swimming pool were established as purifying filter zones.Firstly, the water ends up in a sedimentation zone, planted completely with water lilies to prevent excessive heating of the water in a natural way. Then the water runs through a filter zone. Marsh and water plants take care of the purifying bacterial balance in this area. By reutilizing the existing swimming pool walls, based on the shape of the original pond, the idea is to mimic and restore the original design again as far as possible. Parts of the swimming pool walls are demolished to introduce lightly flowing shores and banks. These are wood-clad and planted with masses of reed vegetation to again achieve a natural looking pond.

The park at the Town Hall in Lørenskog has become the new cultural venue. The park was completed in time to celebrate the municipality's 100th anniversary in August 2008 with 10,000 visitors on the first day. The park at the Town Hall is located in a wellestablished recreational area that has commonly been used for concerts, performances and as a recreational area for the city's inhabitants. Particularly in winter the sloping grassy site has been an attractive toboggan run. The landscape architects have carried out a significant expansion of the park and extensive work has been carried out on the terrain including dams and embankments of up to 7 metres. A double row of 170 cherry trees have been planted along the main walkway and these frame the park in a curve, from which pathways link it to schools and the downtown area. The granite amphitheater is built into the basin of the terrain, facing towards a small stage with wooden decking and framed by granite edging. The stage is for smaller productions, whereas for larger performances, assumed to take place a couple of times a year, a free standing stage can be mounted either over or beside the existing smaller stage. The surrounding grass surface has reinforcement underneath to allow semitrailers to drive over it to supply equipment for larger productions. In wetland area around Lake Langevann a winding wooden adventure path has been built with three wooden and granite piers. One hundred and thirty 4 – 8m long wooden poles have been used to mount a pontoon of oiled pinewood in the wetlands masses creating an attraction during the summer months. This provides close contact with the water and the opportunity to see the water plants of cat’s tail, sedge and water lily as they change through the seasons. 154 - 155

Through a public-private partnership, Tampa has assembled this 24000m2 site as its most critical development area. The long-awaited emergence of residential and Arts District downtown presents a fresh opportunity for an active downtown and a park in which to host civil and cultural events. Imagining a vibrant civic space that would have instant and sustained success, the city selected Thomas Balsley Associates in an open competition. The designers’ initial work involved a carefully-conceived urban design analysis and plan for the site that includes museums, retail, and residential as well as the city’s attendant parking needs. To ensure that the park take its place in the downtown cultural fabric, Thomas Balsley Associates first prepared a cultural district master plan from which the park, riverwalk and two museums derived their locations and relationships to each other, the city and the river. The major challenge was to create a crown jewel in downtown’s riverwalk; a venue of civic pride. The park’s organizing strategy was to frame the great lawn descending to the river by museums and smaller precincts for play, dog runs, restaurants and promenades – all within sight of each other. As such, one can gravitate to places that offer a variety of experiences, leaving the great lawn and its two distinctive fountains to host a multitude of movies and celebrations. Sustainability was a driving force of the design. The park itself replaces acres of concrete and asphalt. Native plantings are irrigated with reclaimed water. Cyclists enjoy a new bike path. And of course, as in all of Thomas Balsley Associates’ work, the programming – event areas, tot lots, and urban dog runs – fosters social sustainability.

De Nieuwe Ooster cemetery and crematorium in Amsterdam is by far the largest cemetery in the Netherlands. Containing over 28,000 graves, it was built in three phases, in 1889, 1915 and 1928. Cemeteries have always been mirrors of society, representing social relations, burial practices and the relationship between the collective and the individual, not to mention prevailing ideas on nature and developments in design and landscape architecture. For all these reasons, the design for the new cineraria in De Nieuwe Ooster cemetery was not an isolated exercise: it required a clear spatial intervention, linked to a vision of how people currently approach bereavement, burial and reminiscence. Rather than connecting the three different zones spatially, Karres en Brands Landscape Architects believe each zone should be given its own identity. Enhancing the contrasts will create a clear partition into three areas, thereby emphasizing the qualities of each individual part. The second extension lacks unifying quality. Therefore it needs an intervention that is bold but relatively easy to implement. The new spatial structure of this zone shall accommodate the existing burial areas as well as create a framework for the necessary extension. People have more divergent opinions, ideas and wishes. De Nieuwe Ooster cemetery intends to meet such demands. The vision for this zone represents new developments within a new linear structure. Some strips contain hedges that divide the zone into spatial compartments. The columbarium and the pond are special zones in this area. The existing burial areas and the garden of remembrance, are incorporated within the zone as compartments with green edges. Silver birches are spread loosely throughout the zone.

The urban environment is highly compacted. Large green areas are becoming a rarity in the city. The urban density involves parks being used more intensively. Sports parks are relocated into the outskirts of the city. A limited number of parks are left within the periphery, even though there is a growing need for green areas in the city (partly due to the changing demographics, green areas play an increasingly important role as day-recreation). A new vision on these areas is requested to keep them as multifunctional park within the cities. Sportpark Middenmeer voorland is a green area in the eastern district of Amsterdam. This precious green area within the city was hardly used by non-athletes. The city council of Oost took the challenge to transform this sportspark into a community park. The sportpark consists of 10 fields, all spread around a central area. This central area is one of Amsterdam's main axes and includes paths which are part of the cities main biking routes. Because of its central position, it was chosen to be redeveloped as a connecting area between the fields. Initially, Carve was only requested tot redesign part of this central area, but Carve showed the importance of redesigning the full area. By restructuring the pathways and merging pedestrian and bike paths, the fragmentation of the area was abolished. The sportfields are opened 24 hours a day since the redesign. Everybody is allowed to exercise at any time, but the sportsmen have priority during training or matches. The surprising mix of functions makes this park one of the most visited parks of the surrounding neighborhoods. The division between playing, education, recreation and sport disappears in this modern city park.

An old cultivated landscape with much variation and beauty was levelled into Oslo’s international airport in the 1940 - 60’s. In 1998, the airport was moved and left behind it a peninsula in the Oslo fjord, of almost 1000 acres in need of transformation. The moving of the Oslo International Airport at Fornebu resulted in the largest industrial reclamation project in the country. The new park was to form a functional focus and an identifying centrepiece of a new community some 10 000 metres from downtown Oslo. In order to respond to its dramatic history, the park has been designed as a dynamic dialogue between the uncompromising linearity of the airport and the softer, more organic forms of the original landscape. The former terminal building and control tower is the starting point for the water feature that stretches north-south through the park. The design of the waterway reflects the playful variations between straight and organic, still reflecting pool surfaces, streaming or falling water. The plaza, a multipurpose floor with large slabs of stone, and moveable water elements that invite children to manipulate the water streams. A large amphitheatre endorses different kinds of performances, as well as quiet reflection. The seven green “arms”, widths varying from 30 to 100 metres, enable people to move easily in the green throughout Fornebu. The “arms” consist of meeting-places and activity areas. A strong ecological profile forms the foundation of the whole transformation process. Polluted grounds and materials have been cleaned, retrieved and reused in order to transform the flat airport area into a landscape with different spatial qualities.

A harmonious park as well as Europe’s largest example of land-art.

Northala Fields located in Ealing is the first new large park in London for decades. The word that best defines the new park, Northala Fields is ‘monumental.’ Four great mounds dominate the skyline, one with a distinctive spiral path, forms the centrepiece of the site rising up out of what was once a barren, windswept, inaccessible tract of land adjacent to the A40, besieged by the constant rumble of traffic and exhaust from millions of vehicles flowing into and out of London’s central core. The mounds are at the heart of a dynamic design developed by FoRM Associates to create a park for the 21st century at no cost to the tax payer. Northala Fields inspires movement. Unlike many of the royal parks dotted across Greater London that seem to lull visitors into repose with their ubiquitous deck chairs, the design of this park and its topology seems to propel visitors into motion. Perhaps there is something buried deep within the human psyche that drives us to climb, to reach the top, knowing that we will just have to come down again. Whatever that something is, it has permeated the grounds of Northala and on any given day you can see countless people – seniors, mothers, young couples, lone joggers, groups of school children, and fathers and sons leading the charge up the mounds. What many Ealing residents may not realise, is that not only do they now have a new park in their community, they also have a piece of land-art. The result is a park that incorporates fully accessible fishing ponds, two children’s playgrounds, a marsh-land reserve, a model boating pond, cycle paths, open playing fields, and the four giant mounds. Yet, despite all these areas of different activity the site design flows together and creates the sense of being one harmonious park as well as Europe’s largest example of land-art. 188 - 189

The Quirijn Park is situated on a narrow strip of land that was once intended for the main traffic access to North Tilburg. The new urban development plan and the design of the park involved the need to rethink and correct earlier development. The existing neighbourhood is characterised by a wide variety of lifestyles, tastes, demands and recreation types. For this reason, a conventional and uniform design would be inappropriate. Quirijn Park had to offer something new. Rather than being treated as separate elements, the traditional park-like features – paths, squares, facilities, planting and buildings – are given equal treatment. The area is neither park nor building, square nor garden, but all of them together. A great diversity of usage opportunities and experiences is created with a limited number of ingredients. The network of paths forms the nerve system of the park. This matrix is not only made up out of paths and open areas; it also incorporates new variations in ground levels. Unlike the surrounding areas, the landscape will undulate slightly. As well as providing the necessary infiltration to surface runoff from the surrounding streets, the undulations will add to the spatial and functional diversity provided by the trees. As a result, the park’s framework will consist of more than just the network and the square: the undulation will include the construction of the bridges, steps, play equipment and furniture.

The Park at Lakeshore East is a 21 448m2 urban park that is the central amenity of the 113 311 m2 Lakeshore East development in Chicago’s Inner Loop. Overlooking the confluence of the Chicago River and Lake Michigan, Lakeshore East is a $4 billion redevelopment that at completion will include 4,950 residential units, 1,500 hotel rooms, 204 386m2 gross of commercial space, 71 535 m2 of retail space and an elementary school. The landscape architect was engaged early in the project by the master plan architects and helped to produce the open space guidelines that would later guide the design and development of the park. Two sweeping promenades serve as the primary circulation across the site and each features a series of fountain basins, seating areas and ornamental gardens. An extension of Field Street’s axis, the Grand Stair offers a commanding view of the park and accommodates the 25’ grade differential created by Chicago’s 3-tiered transit system. Additional amenities include a children’s garden, dog park and event lawn. Occupying the interstitial space created by the intersection of the promenades and the North Grant axis, the children’s garden is organized by a circular plaza with an interactive water feature and safety play surfacing. Located along the transitioning slope near the south side of the park, the dog park offers a safe, secure area for owners to play with their dog.
