Thoughts on Architecture Given my vast interests within architecture... the discipline of architecture, I aimed to pen what matters is interdisciplinary most to me. I developed a list of inspirations and ideals. All is a way of thinking, an iterative these provocations respond to process one simple question: What interests me about architecture?
negotiates space mediates as well as liberates is inspired problem solving
requires optimism
is both logical and personal
listens, then reacts responsibly
demands precision
can transform lived experience
can be grand, whimsical, formal, intimate, serious, and iconic
is the design of a door handle as much as a response to epigenetic forces
expresses relationships (is the preposition of disciplines)
is layered and multi-scalar negotiates space
is intuition as much as developed thought
Outlook on Design My interest in design lies far beyond just architecture, but architecture pulls me in more consistently and forcefully. It drives inspiration, allows for multi scalar speculation, requires precision, and is a human necessity, therefore should be treated and deployed respectfully.
Interdisciplinary
Architecture cannot rely solely on its own discipline for accuracy. The complex nature of the built environment demands that architecture listen and respond to outside influences. This is what excites me. Learning from other disciplines develops At this stage of my life, I want both conceptual thought and rigorous precision. A lot to pen what matters most of this thinking generates regarding my relationship from my urban design with design. At the current background, but architecture moment, these passions can greatly benefit from this can be summarized by two type of practice. I am a firm categories: interdisciplinary and ecological consciousness. believer that wholistic design must engage other ideas, disciplines, and voices.
2
Ecologically Consciousness Architecture cannot ignore the ecological cost that habitation has on the planet, especially living in the Anthropocene. While habitation and dwelling are human necessities, providing for them should be done with the least critical harm to the environment. To me, this constraint doesn’t limit design, it rather liberates creativity to transform habitation’s relationship with ecology, a relationship dependent on material costs, labor, and energy demands. Architecture can generate new ways of living, but this creative task must be done efficiently and responsibly.

Where Data Goes, I Go
exploring the architecture of data and digital information in st. louis degree project for grad school
program | data denter & center for digital isolation location | bridgeton, st. louis county, missouri The transmission of information has evolved from physical documentation to digital signals, from ink to electrons. The global data infrastructural network provides ubiquitous access to the internet and cloudbased platforms, which creates a culture of digital dependence. Today, we are constantly immersed in digital information, peering at our smartphones, TVs, and computers for a majority of the day in order to stay connected. My thesis proposes a new typology for data centers, making them a destination for
28
people as well as data. I am denying the monofunctional program of a data center by combining it with a place to escape from the digital realm, a place for relaxation and selfreflection. The dual programs create an architecture of coexisting realities by juxtaposing the data center with a center for digital isolation. Sensory deprivation chambers, individual and communal baths, data-less workspaces, and meditation space encompass a central exterior courtyard. The excessive heat produced from the data center is collected
and used to heat the various pools and water dependent spaces within and around the building, creating a mutually beneficial relationship between programs. By transforming the programmatic responsibility of a data center, this new typology enables people to more clearly understand the physical presence data has in the urban landscape. And with our increasing dependence on interacting with data in our digital silos, this project proposes a human centered response to living in a data dependent world.

Adaptable Edges
high density development at the pedestrian scale
program | mixed-use urban design proposal for an edge city location | plano, texas
As a response to the exurban site and the various barriers - programmatic, physical, infrastructural – found on site, my project proposes a blurring of these barriers through pixilation. The pixel has both an individualized importance and a collective responsibility, and they depend on each other for full clarity. This propelled me to establish the practice of urban resolution to conceptualize the various scalar requirements across the vast site. Through scales of pixelization, infrastructural, architectural, ecological pixels can create a matrix that fosters a thriving urban development. Additionally, this project expands the possibilities for exurban sites by speculating
38
on fitting the transect of a city onto the 1300 foot long site. The condensing of urban sprawl reduces the dross in between and allows for various typologies of living and working that people desire. From high density mixed-use living to single family homes, this range of urban living in a walkable area transforms the potential for single entity models of city making. In regards to blurring the program, the previously distinct edges of residential, corporate, and commercial programs are now blurred within a formal structure, juxtaposing them efficiently in a codependent manner. This method of program aggregation allows for the continual adaptation of
interior conditions depending on future building needs. Throughout this project, conceptual and design priority is given to pedestrians. In a condensed urban transect, the car loses importance and the pedestrian regains power. Through networks of pedestrian streetscapes and ecological corridors, traversing the site is most efficient and enjoyable at the human scale.

Pottery
exploration of stoneware forms
Pottery is a craft rooted in patience as much as technique.
wedge throw trim bisque glaze fire
48
The process never changes, but the form does. Tactile, intentional, iterative. Like architecture, hand throwing pottery is an iterative formal exercise, one that relies on practice and trial-and-error to improve upon. It’s a craft rooted in tradition and collaboration, and an art form of patience and precision.
What drives me about this craft is the deliberate formal intimacy – creation occurs only when I control the clay. Formal combinations are endless, and design dictates what objects are created.
