Portfolio Kevin Deepak Vaswani

I am an Artist, Industrial and Furniture Designer born in Jakarta, Indonesia and raised in an Indian household. The combination of these two artistically rich cultures brings about an aesthetic that is quite unique in the world’s post-modern backdrop. Achieving a BFA in Furniture Design in Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia, USA has been a worthwhile pursuit into post-modern design. Remaining compassionate towards the environment as well as fighting for ethical labor laws are at the forefront of my larger mission. I am passionate about morphing the specific cultural vernacular into a refreshing and innately spiritual light not only to reflect on the timelessness of values and resilience of the human spirit, but to create holistic spaces for connected living. A representation of modern sentience that redifines humble luxury

Welcome Selamat Datang Salaam For the minutes that you spend looking at this portfolio, i hope to extend warmth into a world yet unknown. These designs are possibilities waiting to happen and show the potential of a future that might be. Though uncertain, challenging times call for new and imaginative measures. Aesthetics are valued, but sentience and purity in concept are treasured. I hope my treasury of imagination becomes a part of your reality in the near future.

Tom Dixon: The Solo Rider

This lounge chair is a product extension for designer Tom Dixon. Specifically focused on extending their chair line, lounge seating is something that the brand has focused on. I was inspired by three of their latest chair designs. Taking inspiration from those would help me bring in a cohesive product that presents a luxurious lounge experience.

Courtesy of Jaime Hayon

The munchies stool is intended to be a high seating stool designed in reference to the Jaime Hayon aesthetic. Taking inspiration from tea culture, I learnt that oolong tea leaves are ingested by bugs first. They leave tiny little holes leaving a sweet tasting chemical on its rim. Famous oolongs like the Tie Guan Yin are commonly known by its sweet taste and aroma. The mark of a ‘munch’, very commonly known in the Apple logo is a piece of inspiration that also went into designing the chair. The first step of designing this chair went into mixing both an Asian and a Mid century Modern aesthetic. But that changed drastically when I started to learn upholstery. When I decided to revisit the design, I Looked into making a elongated stool with six legs, with nothing square or cubic in sight.

Fresh OFF the Boat As a group of three students, two interior design students and one furniture design student, we were instructed to recreate the interiors of a restaurant in the Thunderbolt area of Savannah. The restaurant serves southern American seafood as their specialty and has a beautiful backdrop of a marshland and river. The attraction of this area specifically is that of a dock that houses those that are boat makers, enthusiasts and drivers. I was interested to see the intricacies and similarities of aesthetics within so many coastal regions and how the hospitality industry has championed them. From the variety of local and sustaining materials to the patterns used to warm the space up, it truly brings a space together.

Love is blind A collection of tables for west Elm Words have a powerful way of influencing our thoughts and actions. If a space is created to harness a holistic lifestyle, the user would gain a positive relationship with the space and will be emotionally whole. The inspiration that led me to create such a design was through the longing of helping those in need and giving to those that do not have a spotlight. I brought in the use of Braille as an aesthetic design element to spell uplifting words such as Love, Dream, Peace, Joy and Magic. Using materials like wood, marble and brass creates for something that is warm and inviting. They are all natural materials which are versatile and fit into almost any space. The Idea of the collection came from a development of Ideas which started out as Inobjective and primitive that morphed into a story and purpose that is objective to the experience of the blind.

CHAA

The old spirit of hospitality CHAA is a cabinet concept that fuses the beauty of Arabic (Sindhi) lettering and global tea culture. Much too often people are not aware that just like wine, tea (when processed in a specific way) can be aged as well. This wooden cabinet, is meant to hold air-tight ceramic canisters, designed and made through the process of slip-casting. It is meant to represent the beautiful process of maturation as the patinas of the cabinet will change with the dry tea leaves. It hopes to express the age old beauty and philosophical traits of tea culture some of which are needed more than ever in today’s post pandemic world.
